I used to believe that in ODIs (not T20s), there is always a place for batsmen like Babar and Saud who prefer to play along the ground, manipulate the field and play risk free cricket. My rationale was that if you are 160-2/3 after 30 overs, you can most likely double it next 20 to reach 320-330 easily. That is why I thought its fine to have Babar and Saud at the top order alongside Fakhar in this CT. After today's performance, I realized that such a strategy cannot succeed against tight bowling and intelligent field setting. NZ in first 10 overs completely strangled our batsmen. Saud and Babar were middling the bowl but straight to fielders at most occasions. Both of these batters cannot play lofted shots and opposition knows this. Only way for them to score in power play is to wait for lose deliveries which may not come against top bowling. In middle overs, they can at best rotate strike and have to wait for Salman or Rizwan to increase strike rate.

Now What ?
Now before mentioning players like Imam, Tayyab, Kamran or Abdullah, remember that they are all accumulators with minimal ability to hit boundaries against good quality spin and pace. Abdullah may have some ability but mentally he is even worse than Imam.
So what are your suggestions ? What should we do with our top and middle order both in this CT and WC27 ? Is waiting for Fakhar and Saim pair is only option and are we doomed until they both get fit ?

What to do now?

Let’s sack Aqib and his staff,

And give Babar+Rizwan an iron clad Category A contract plus assurance of interchanging leadership for the next 10 years

Just wait till 23 to complete the humiliation, else what you want to lose 4 times against NZ in 25 days :bravo

After our first loss in CT17, Fakhar made his debut. Should we do the same with Usman Khan against India ?

For 2027 worldcup preparations if I was the manager of Pak cricket then I would have selected the following lineup.

Saim Ayub
Shamyl Hussain
Babar Azam
Azan Awais
Saad Baig (WK)
Saad Khan
Maaz Sadaqat
Shaheen
Ahmed Danyal
Abrar
Saqib Khan

With players like Awais Zafar , Shahzeb Khan , Salman Mirza , Usman Tariq , Abdullah Fazal ,Ali Raza , Arafat Minhas being part of the squad.

The pace bowling looks below average and we have no upcoming pacers but the spin attack , allrounders and batters are there.

How the hell is Rizwan ok for you in T20 middle order but not in ODI middle order???

The names I have mentioned are definitely quality youngsters who have proven themselves at U19 level and now dominating domestic circuit and so no harm in giving them chances even if 2/3 turns out to be good players then it will be a win win situation.
