Heres hoping for a more sporting pitch in the 2nd test, and some exciting cricket.

What changes, if any would you like to see in the Pakistan team?

With Hassan Ali back... Pak bowling will be stronger.

The road they prepared for first match should be banned!

Yes - can we have the same formula we used for the South Africa series please. That test in Karachi against South Africa - 33 wickets fell, 13 to seamers and 20 to spinners. Also saw wickets falling with the new ball in all innings. That's a good balance.

Keeping an eye on ticket sales.

Day 1 - about 8500 online tickets left
Day 2 - about 6500 online tickets left

More available for days 3, 4 and 5.

Pakistan team I recon will be,

1. Imam
2. Abdullah
3. Azhar
4. Babar
5. Fawad
6. Rizwan
7. Faheem
8. Hassan
9. Nauman
10. Sajid
11. Shaheen

Ideally I would prefer Yasir Shah but I think Sajid should get another go. There will be more spin on offer, plus Australia have a couple of dangerous left handers

A hint of grass and you bring Australians in the game a bit of Dust and cracks who's the best spinner among both teams, So a catch 22 it is

Australia team most likely,

1. Warner
2. Khwaja
3. Labushange
4. Smith
5. Head
6. Carey
7. Cummins
8. Starc
9. Lyon
10. Swepson
11. Hazlewood

Wasim Jnr has been released from Test squad and will join his team for the ongoing Pakistan Cup

Australia team most likely,

1. Warner
2. Khwaja
3. Labushange
4. Smith
5. Head
6. Carey
7. Cummins
8. Starc
9. Lyon
10. Swepson
11. Hazlewood

Aussies need to bring in Boland in place of starc.

Karachi evening breeze assists swing. There is no need for a 2nd regular spinner - a part-timer will do it if needed. I hope that some sanity prevails when preparing a track and choosing a squad to keep the game entertaining.

10. Sajid
11. Shaheen

That looks like a decent team to me but I would not surprised if Yasir Shah does replace Sajid. Babar's pre match comments before the Pindi test seems to indicate he wants Yasir back in the team and I can't blame him. He has far more wicket taking chances than Sajid in home conditions.

Imam
Shafique
Shaan Masood(yes,Azhar should make way)
Babar
Fawad
Rizwan
Nauman
Hassan Ali
Sajid
Afridi
Rouf

Chachu got lucky with six wickets after bowling a negative line. He should be replaced by Nawaz if he's fit. And Yasir comes back for Sajid.

Nawaz, Yasir, Hassan, Haris, Shaheen is an attacking bowling line.

I'd imagine Hasan & Faheem will replace Naseem & Iftikhar and rest will be the same. Should be a much more potent attack for the next match.

Mitchell Swepson is the frontrunner to be handed an emotional Test debut just a week after the death of mentor Shane Warne, as Australia lean towards two spinners for Karachi.

Australia's preparations for Saturday's second Test began even before the dour first contest in Rawalpindi was complete, with Pat Cummins resting quicks in Pakistan's second innings.

Cummins then admitted the team was already strongly considering playing two frontline spinners in the final two Tests of the series, after calling on part-timers to assist Nathan Lyon in the opener.

Realistically selections would not have changed the outcome of the first Test, after Pakistan finished the match 0-252 in their second innings on a wicket that offered nothing for quicks.

But Australian officials are expecting Karachi to be different, with Rawalpindi previously identified as the one pace-friendly pitch.

"From our intel in Karachi and Lahore a second spinner is probably the way to go, but we'll have a look," Cummins said.

"It may have been may have been helpful here (in Rawalpindi) but I don't think it would have made too much of a difference.

"We were expecting more up-and-down bounce and reverse swing (that didn't come)."

When asked if Australia would likely opt for a wrist spinner in the form of Swepson to partner Nathan Lyon, rather than another finger spinner in Ashton Agar, Cummins indicated it would be the case.

"It is an asset for sure having a wrist spinner, it's something a bit different. And Sweppo has been bowling beautifully," Cummins said.

"We'll get to Karachi and have a look. But absolutely Sweppo as a wrist spinner is a huge chance if we play two."

If Australia were to go with Swepson, it would grant Warne a wish he called for over several seasons for his protege.

The pair worked together on regular occasions in the last three years before the 52-year-old's sudden death last week.

The Queenslander has previously recalled the impact Warne had on his approach to the crease, with the Spin King slowing down his run up within six balls of working with him in 2019.

The change helped Swepson become the country's most consistent red-ball wrist spinner, cutting his economy rate drastically while still picking up wickets.

Warne first called for Swepson to be picked for the Sydney Test in 2020, and made similar suggestions in this summer's Ashes to help prepare for him the tour of Pakistan.

Neither selection came to fruition, but making Swepson Australia's first frontline legspinner since Steve Smith a decade ago would come at the end of an already emotional week for the team.

"It's been a really tough week," Cummins said after the draw in Rawalpindi.

"A few members were closer to Rod (Marsh) or Shane than others, and everyone deals differently.

"Everyone's still in a bit of disbelief. Especially with Shane's passing happening so suddenly.

"It's certainly been a big point of conversation."

Swepson's selection would likely be at the expense of Josh Hazlewood or Mitchell Starc, with Cameron Green to act as a third quick.

Meanwhile Pakistan will be able to recall quicks Harris Rauf Haris and Hasan Ali for the second Test, after both recovered from COVID-19.

Yes they will go with this attack.

He gives balance to the team he has improved his batting in tests lately.

Him and Shadab have been key in some crucial test matches in the past... Together they give you 2 extra bowling options as well as two extra batters...

After the first test match i would actually play shadab instead of faheem who would take iftis place

What are Karachis pitches like normally? Are they as flat as Rawalpindi? Does anyone actually know

Him and Shadab have been key in some crucial test matches in the past... Together they give you 2 extra bowling options as well as two extra batters...

Yes I agree but Shadab doesn't warrant a spot in asain conditions but does in SENA conditions.

They played a coward's game before the game ever began.
Was this the most boring, unwatchable test ever? I stopped watching large chunks of it, and didn't care to watch the final day at all.
They lost nerve once they knew Hassan Ali and Faheem Ashraf weren't available and prepared a dead pitch.
It was an insult to the Rawalpindi crowd.
To test cricket.
Are test championship points that important? And even if they are, they would do best to fight in the right spirit than the coward's game they played, which takes you nowhere, and doesn't even earn goodwill.
Aside from the local crowd, what about broadcast in Australia and around the cricketing world?
Who would want to watch test cricket in Pakistan if this is the quality?
And if bringing top international teams to Pakistan is the biggest motivation, why would they do this?
The cowardice instilled in the team in recent years was there for all the world to see.
Babar is too timid, meek, and unimaginative a character, and he's not likely to change his nature. Witness his cluelessness during the T20 World Cup when he actually stated that he couldn't imagine playing a game without Hassan Ali, which was part of the reason they lost the semifinal. He sticks to the script provided to him, and cannot deviate from it. They said let's have a dead pitch, and he's the last person to raise his voice. Or maybe it was his idea in part.
And Saqlain seems just as unimaginative. What was the point of Iftikhar? Why bring back Naseem?
They make the selections as if this were a turning UAE pitch in the latter days, and it is NOT. The visiting team apparently read the pitch better.
Or maybe they understood how dead the pitch was and that a result was impossible, in which case the selections don't even matter.
It was attritional cricket minus the UAE spinning pitch. How does that make sense?
Is the idea to grind the Australian bowlers to dust? Who does that benefit?
I refuse to grant the management the imagination to have pursued the strategy of trying out such a strategy. Tire the Australians for the next two tests. They are not that brilliant, they just go along with whatever happens. Azhar is playing a certain way, and Imam is trying to secure his place, and nobody has the guts, neither captain nor coach, to raise a fuss. Azhar needs to play his 100 tests, and Imam is just coming back, and that's that.
If they'd scored 600 in two days, which they could have, even on this dead pitch, although there wouldn't have been a result, at least they could have made it interesting.
But they play at a leisurely place, without any urgency. In Bangladesh, playing this way, they can pull out a win, but not against this side.
And then the final day of nonsense, scoring careful meaningless centuries. Imam again. Who even cares? They could have piled up a bunch of runs in 30 overs, then given the other side a fair chance to chase it. That's the right spirit of the game.
I cannot believe the persistent across-the-board cowardice I see from this team, except for the rare occasion or the rare character.
And they will not learn. If Hassan Ali and Faheem come back, expect a better pitch. Got to avoid losing at all costs, even against Zimbabwe, let alone Australia. If the bowlers come back, they'll prepare a better pitch.
They don't care about how they are perceived in the cricketing world. It doesn't matter if Ramiz brings Australia to Pakistan. They'll go about it their own way.
So disappointing. You'd have to be a die-hard fan to stick with them.

I'd be shocked if his terrible LO form doesn't translate over to the longer format.

He was horrible in PSL and is only getting into the team now because we have zero other options.

I agree , his days of international cricket are numbered, younger players like Naseem and Dahani will replace him soon.

Hassan Ali is the MVP in test cricket. People here keep confusing one format against another

loads fans crying about hasan Ali returning to test team, its the one format he does well in and is a match winner.. He shudnt be playing odis or T20s and how hes not performed in those has no relevance to test form.

Oof. Another Batter will play in his place again. Probably Iftikhar

we will see in second test

I guess you clearly havent watched any pakistans test matches hes recently played in? Are you another so called expert judging someones form on a completely different format?

He is nothing special does well sometimes but i dont expect anything from him in karachi

Please enlighten us mr expert what other world class seamer should we pick instead?

I do not understand why Pakistan is so unlucky against Australia in virtually all big matches.
Everytime some major player misses out before big match, starting with Injury of Mudassar Nazar a night before 1987 world cup semi final. Muhammad yusuf injured just before 1999 world cup final, Rizwan and Malik going to hospital before T20 world cup semi final last year, covid positive of Rauf and injuries to hasab ali/faheem before 1st test and now out of nowhere Covid positive of Faheem before highly crucial karachi Test.
Jinxed. Pak had to break this jinx against Aussies which mysteriously started in 1987.

Saud Shakeel should play instead of Iftikhar Ahmed..

you mean against Bangladesh?

Taking into account 2 factors:

1. Hassan Ali's recent lack of match fitness, his ability to bowl wicket taking deliveries against QUALITY batsmen
2. He if facing Australian batsmen not bangladeshi batsmen or out of form 2nd string SA batsmen

we will see if he truly better in Tests

Why PCB is failing to protect these guys!! Look at Australia team, they have not seen any COVID cases...

This is the team i really want to see:

Abdullah
Imam
Azhar
Babar
Fawad
Shadab
Rizwan
Hasan Ali
Nauman
Sajid
Shaheen

Give them a dry pitch which starts breaking up on day 3. Australia surely have no match for Pakistan's triple pronged spin attack in those conditions.

All our players have been playing PSL, so in regards to 4 day cricket no one would have had any match practice. Not just Hasan. So the point you have tried to make is comical. Schedules these days are such most test players dont get warm up games now.

You can only bowl against the scheduled teams you are playing and hes done well. Why dont you tell me all about the next waqars, wasims and shoaib akthars we have domestically that we have that should be playing instead.

In the domestic 4 day game played late last year he played 9 games taking 43 wickets at average of 20.

His test record is excellent aswell, so i dont get exactly what your crying about?

oh wait your judging it based on T20 performances i bet?

Enlighten me please, rather then just making random statements with zero facts.

Exactly people are mixing the formats I hope the ball starts to reverse.

Yes second string team that just beat New Zealand in the first test.

This is a 3 match series, so yes lets see how he fairs. I bet ul be 1st one to start whinging if he doesnt take 5 wickets in his 1st over.

Hoping that Hasan comes back fit and firing. If Faheem also clears covid barrier, then Pak team looking man to man better outfit with excellent batting depth.

These next 2 tests critical for Pak. World test championship final will become very very high probability if Pak can play 2 good matches here.

Shadab or Nawaz if fit are much better options for Faheem being out. We definitely shouldn't be playing 6 batsmen plus Rizwan on home batting tracks.

Fawad played a rare test of 0 bowling catching field and no one beside openers were needed in second inn.

I would rather they play 5 bowlers with atacking mindset then 6 batsmen. So ideal 4 bowlers and one all rounder , second choice 5 bowlers last resort 6 batsmen.

An outlandish option would be to play Qasim akram.

Yes, 5 batter + Rizwan then Shadab ( or even Nawaz if not Shadab ) and 4 bowlers would be a better option .

Lets see how Hasan Ali does against a quality bowling , I don;t have much hope from him. Australian play bowlers of his pace in their grade cricket. Hope he does well but that if he does , should not be rewarded by including him in T20 squad for the WC. In T20 batters are more aggressive and love to play shots against trundlers.

Yes, 5 batter + Rizwan then Shadab ( or even Nawaz if not Shadab ) and 4 bowlers would be a better option .
Problem is I believe is not fully fit and Shadab is not in bubble, maybe if he is called right away even then only 2 days I think you need 3 days for joining bubble. Pcb has messed up big time as soon as Nawaz was unfit they should have called shadab to bubble.

Now I think we have no good alternate to Faheem. For anyone who says it's Wasim Jr., that is not an option at all this is not a league t20 match its a test match against world number 1 side.

So given current resources and confidence our batsmen gained in last innings who are playing on home surface I would recommend we just drop a batsman. Can be ifti or Fawad. Likely has to be Ifti as Fawad hasn't done anything wrong to be dropped and is sole leftie in middle order. Rest I would go with Rizwan plus 5 bowlers.

Go with this lineup make the track a bit sporting eith spin on day 4 5 and so long as we post decent totals we can all out attack with 3 pacers and 2 spinners.

Also Australia may make some changes and drop one of their good pacers for an average spinner which probably works in our favor as ultimately our batsman shouldn't mind facing an average intl spinner over top pacer on our own tracks.

Tickets

Yesterday there were only 5k or so tickets left for Day 1 and about 4k left for day 2. It seems they have now released another 10k or so tickets for Day 1.

Whoever runs the ticketing system has this irritating thing where they only release 50% of tickets and then release the rest in batches. I know some ticketing companies do this but it is for events which are months, even a year in advance. Not when the event is literally days away.

Pitch

Had a lot of grass on it yesterday but that will be shaved off. Still no reports on how it looks like it will play.

Weather

Clear for all five days

Very risky, the tail will start with Hassan at number 7.

More likely to be Hassan instead of Naseem or Sajid.

No.

They need 3 seamers as Iftikhar is useless as an all-rounder/enforcer

Also dropping Sajid would be a dangerous thing to do as he will be a key bowler against Warner, Khawaja, Carey and Head (maybe Starc too). Aid have 5 left handers in their XI and Sajid will be vital.

I admit Naseem isnt the ideal bowler, but he will only look as bad as the wickets column for the team and not him as an individual. It seems that Pakistan has struggled or toiled every time he has played in the last year or so. I think with Hassan pairing up with Shaheen could provide vital breakthroughs for Naseem to work on as first change

Hasan Ali for Naseem and Kamran Ghulam for Iftikhar. Kamran could bowl better than Iftikhar and obviously much better as a batsman, and I have no idea why Fawad is not usedforhis bowling at all.

Update on Fahim Ashraf: Fahim Ashraf has tested negative in his repeat RAT and has rejoined the squad.

Update on Fahim Ashraf: Fahim Ashraf has tested negative in his repeat RAT and has rejoined the squad.
That's excellent news. Faheem for ifti, Hasan for Naseem. That is enough for second test. Third test if Nawaz is fit and available or Shadab fit and available I would strongly consider going with a spin all rounder, one specialist spinner, and then Hasan, Shaheen and Haris.

Just over 13k tickets still available for Day 1. About 9k available for Day 2. With a capacity of 34k that means about 21k tickets have been sold for day 1 and 25k for day 2. Better than I expected, I must say, after the bore fest first test and Karachiites not really coming out even for T20 cricket any more. Still a day to do to sell some more.

Pakistan should be at full strength now no excuses not to win the series now.

Swepson earns Test debut for second Pakistan match as Hazlewood dropped

Karachi: Australian captain Pat Cummins has confirmed leg-spinner Mitch Swepson will make a long-awaited debut in the second Test in Karachi at the expense of Josh Hazlewood.

Speaking on Friday, Cummins confirmed Australia would go into the fixture with two spinners, with Swepson becoming the first Australian specialist leg-spinner since Bryce McGain in 2009 to make a Test debut.

Swepson, who has been waiting years for a baggy green, will partner Nathan Lyon on a Karachi pitch that is expected to offer plenty of turn for the slow bowlers.

The unlucky man is Hazlewood, who has been squeezed out. Cummins, Mitch Starc and Cameron Green will be Australia’s pace bowlers.

Australian XI: Usman Khawaja, David Warner, Marnus Labuschagne, Steve Smith, Travis Head, Cameron Green, Alex Carey, Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins, Nathan Lyon, Mitch Swepson.

https://www.smh.com.au/sport/cricke...tch-as-hazlewood-dropped-20220311-p5a3w8.html

surprised they are keeping faith with Starc, but it maybe because they think he will create rough for the spinners.

If you asked the Pak batsmen, they would much rather prefer facing Starc to Hazlewood

Babar Azam on Mitch Swepson

"I haven't seen much of Mitch Swepson, I believe he will be debuting for Australia in the 2nd Test at Karachi, we will watch his videos and then plan accordingly"

Are Pakistan afraid of Australia? (regarding preparation of pitch in 'Pindi)

"This is not the case at all, conditions are same for both countries; Test Championship points are crucial for all sides, so our plan was always to win the match; Our team dominated that match with our batters scoring hundreds, and we took wickets too; Unfortunately the result did not go our way and that is not in our control - we did put in a good effort; The result may well have been different if time had not been lost due to rain"

Karachi pitch

"The pitch as far as we can see looks like a sporting one; Now I hear a lot of talk about how a pitch should be etc but the fact is that we have to make an effort to score runs and take wickets on whichever pitch is presented to us"

"The number one ranked Test side, Australia, is here and to perform well against such a team is difficult as they will give you a tough time on the pitch; The way our team has shown patience in both bowling and batting has been outstanding and hopefully we will continue in that way"

Slow run rates of Pakistan batters

"I don't think that this true; This was Abdullah Shafique's 4th Test and this was Imam-ul-Haq's comeback and we aren't appreciating how well they played but talking about how slow they played; If you look at Australia's bowlers, they have come with high confidence after winning The Ashes then you can appreciate how well our batters played; They initially observed the nature of the pitch and then did raise their average to over 4 runs per over also at times

Does Pakistan have an advantage going into the Karachi Test

"Yes definitely so; We dominated them in the 1st Test and took 10 wickets, we had hundreds in this game with Imam scoring back-to-back centuries, the way Abdullah Shafique played a mature innings and is improving day by day, and the way Azhar Ali scored runs has all given us a lot of confidence and momentum which we will take into the next Test"

On possible changes to XI

"We will finalise our final XI today. Our two main players are back and we will surely consider them"

Leg-spinner Mitchell Swepson will make his long-awaited Test debut against Pakistan on Saturday, with skipper Pat Cummins confirming Australia's XI for the second Test of the three-match series.

With the surface in Karachi expected to aid spin, Cummins announced that Swepson will play his first Test match, with fast bowler Josh Hazlewood the man to miss out.

Swepson first toured with Australia's Test side five years ago and has consistently been Nathan Lyon's spin deputy in the past few years, but has not been able to make the final XI.

The Queenslander will be the first frontline leg-spinner to debut in Tests for Australia's men's team since Bryce McGain in 2009.

"He's pumped and to be honest, we're all pumped for 'Swepo'," Cummins said.

"It's been a long time running drinks over the last couple of years, but he's absolutely ready.

"He's been a huge part of the squad, even though he hasn't been playing. So we're really excited to see him get a chance.

"The wicket here is a little bit drier and historically a bit friendlier for the spinners."

The drought-breaking inclusion of a leg-spinner comes less than a week after the man many consider the greatest slow bowler of all time, Shane Warne, died suddenly in Thailand.

The spin legend mentored Swepson at various points through his career, passing on tactical and technical tips, perhaps most notably during the 2017-18 summer when Warne advised him to slow his approach to the crease.

"Never got to properly thank this man for his influence on my cricket career," Swepson posted in a social media tribute following Warne's death on Friday. "He has made me push myself day in and day out without ever knowing it. Truly the greatest cricketer I've ever seen play the game."

Australia trialled a handful of wrist-spinners in the aftermath of Warne's Test retirement in 2007 but, until off-spinner Lyon's emergence, struggled to come to terms with the gaping hole left by arguably cricket's greatest bowler.

Stuart MacGill played just four of his 44 Tests after Warne hung up the boots before injuries curtailed his career, while Brad Hogg (three post-Warne Tests) Beau Casson (one Test in 2008 against West Indies) and McGain (one in 2009) were all tried and discarded.

Cameron White (four Tests on Australia's 2008 tour of India) and Steve Smith (who batted at eight and nine when he played his first two Tests in 2010) were even trialled as nominal 'bowling allrounders'.

But Australia have not fielded a specialist wrist-spinner in a Test since McGain's debut against South Africa 13 years ago that saw him taken apart for 0-149 in 18 overs.

More than half the wickets in last year's Karachi Test between Pakistan and South Africa were taken by spin with another Warne favourite, leggie Yasir Shah, claiming seven for the match.

Cummins indicated he expects reverse swing to play a role over the five days of the Test, which may explain to decision to pick Mitchell Starc ahead of Hazlewood.

Both off and leg spin bases covered by Aus and they're looking confident. Pakistan is leaving their XI as a mystery despite being the home side, in their own backyard.

A fresh angle of Alex Carey's accidental pool plunge in Karachi... which captain Pat Cummins found simply hilarious
