I think, Kiwis will have one change - CDG dropped and a specialist batsman picked. I don't see any one in squad, therefore Tom Blundell might make the XI, despite being WK. Ideally, there are 5 days time and there is daily direct Eremites flight between Auckland & Dubai - I would have flown that Will Young guy and open with him & Raval, dropping Latham at 5.

Raval, Young, Will, Ross, Latham, Nicholls, Watling, Sodhi, Wagner, Patel, Boult.

For PAK, I am not sure - previously, in Misbah's time, it was "never change a winning combination"; Sarfraz's time might has come down to, "never change a losing combination, until they win". PAK haven't taken any back-up spinner, therefore Bilal stays, while other 3 flops are Captain, Nephew & national treasure - won't be surprised if PAK goes with same XI.

Bilal is garbage. Want him replaced but no back up spinner means he will keep his place. Hafeez should be dropped. Azhar to open and Saad comes into the middle order.

Why can't we fly left arm spinner replacing Bilal. Rashid Latif said we can replace as this is not world cup squad where ICC permission is required.

Azhar should open and Bilal should be replaced with either Shadab, Irfan jnr or Zafar Gohar and Saad Ali should debut at no 6.

Say alvida to Hafeez and Asif - that's the bare minimum they could do.

Why are there 5 pacers in a squad when we're likely to play just 2. Seems crazy lol. Also makes it so we don't have any replacements for the other positions.

Same team but Saad ali for Hafeez, Azhar opens. Asad keeps his place I guess as a result of few squad options, though it's crazy someone can have a middle order place for 9 years uninterrupted and still average less than 40.

Obsession with pacers of micky sarfraz inzi destroyed our uae fort why we not developed new spinners or spin allrounders.

Sarfaraz himself is past prime.

Bilal and yasir both should not be there.

Hafeez should be dropped.

Azhar
Imam
Haris
Babar
Shafiq
Shadab
Sarfraz
Yasir
Hasan Ali
Shaheen - needs a couple of games under his belt before he is tasked to bowl in SA.
Abbas

3 spinners in Yasir, Shadab and Haris. Hafeez's bowling isn't required as he doesn't bowl much and Asif is struggling due to the lack of bounce.

Use Shaheen for 4-5 over bursts.

Abbas should bat ahead of brainless guys like Yasir and Hasan

We really need to add another proper batsman in this feeble lineup, Saad Ali should debut. Drop Hafeez & open with Azhar. Irfan (left arm spinner) is playing with A squad, he should be drafted in for Bilal.

1. Imam
2. Azhar
3. Haris
4. Shafiq
5. Babar
6. Saad
7. Sarfaraz
8. Irfan
9. Yasir

It will be interesting to see what happens if NZ wins the toss in 2nd test.

Inzamam has made sure that Imam cannot be dropped.

Kiwis come with three spinners , pakistan playing past the prime Yasir , and useless Bilal.

Inzamam has made sure that Imam cannot be dropped.

Imam played bad shot in first inning but he was ok in second inning. Why would I drop a new batsman without giving him plenty of matches. He has already shown good temperament in many matches.

I think we should draft in players from A squad playing england lions.

Haffeez, azhar, asad, sarfraz, asif all need to go.

Ozzie hacks threw their wickets away to Bilal and now we are stuck with him

Hasan will be useless if there is no reverse swing

Nothing matters anyway as long as we have this scatter brain as captain.

I predict a 0-3 loss coming for us as the Kiwis will only get stronger now.

What would be your starting XI for the 2nd Test against New Zealand?

Any changes?

Who to drop?

Who to bring in?

I still feel it will be tough without a second genuine spinner + genuine openers.

Pak making this mistake since 2017 and paying for it. It cost us the SL series and now probably the NZ series.

Bilal Asif has most likely played his last test for Pakistan. Expect the inclusion of a left arm spinner in the squad.

Hafeez will get another game. If he doesn’t perform, Fakhar will get the chance in third test.

Likely drop Hafeez and hopefully Bilal Asif. Draft in Zafar or Irfan Jr for Bilal. As for Hafeez either bring in Fakhar or move Azhar to open and bring in Saad Ali at No.6

Hafeez will be surely be dropped for Saad Ali with Azhar opening, Haris @ 3, Asad @ 4, Barbar @ 5 & Saad @ 6.

They can draft in Irfan the spinner from the A team for Saturday's game to replace Bilal.

Fakhar
Imam
Haris sohail
Babar Azam
Fawad Alam (c)
Saad Ali
Rizwan
Irfan jr
Yasir shah
Hasah Ali
Abbas

Kick all senior losers out of team for good.

Unfortunately this will not happen. Azhar Ali isn't considered an opener anymore.

I think we should draft in players from A squad playing england lions.

Haffeez, azhar, asad, sarfraz, asif all need to go.

For now only Hafeez and Bilal needs to go if Azhar does not score big in the series then he should not be selected for S A. Series. Sarfraz is going nowhere and he is doing fine with his primary role as wicket keeper. You cannot blame captain for lack of batting talent in Pakistan.

Pak are the home team, meaning they can make changes at any time to the squad.

I would call up Salahudin from the A team and Zafar or bring in whoever does well tomorrow against Eng A between Asghar and Irfan.

Definitely need to open with Azhar and need to play both Saad and Usman, meaning shafiq and hafeez benched.

However, I don't see any of that happening - most likely same line up, but faheem in for bilal.

Stick with the same 11, evaluate performances, and make permanent changes with regards to non performers at the end of the series. That’s the only way of getting rid of non-performers. Otherwise they’ll just keep moaning about their lack of chances for the rest of their lives.

No other specialist spinner in the squad so Bilal will have to stay. I would drop Hafeez for Saad . Azhar to open. Babar or Haris at 3.

In his last 20 innings at 3/4/5 position he is averaging 42. His career average is below 40 because he has batted mostly at #6/7.

I did this on Cricinfo. Last 3 (16,17 & 18) years, Shafiq is averaging 35.6 at batting positions 3-6. If you change the positions to 3-5 instead, the average goes up to 42.1.

Same criteria for Azhar, last 3 years, averaging 52 as an opener. At #3, his average goes down to 37. I really don't know he was moved back to #3...

Who do we blame for his pathetic batting then ? We are losing games and this guy isn't performing yet he still has supporters who defend him to the hill. :))

Asad keeps his place I guess as a result of few squad options, though it's crazy someone can have a middle order place for 9 years uninterrupted and still average less than 40.

As a neutral it seems crazy to me that you don't want Asad Shafiq in your side. He seems to be the only dependable batsman in the XI, at least in Asia.

We need to accept we are not blessed with batsman and making drastic changes is not going to fix the problem.

Batting order needs to change and Hafeez out for Fakhar.

Azhar
Imam
Fakhar
Haris (only just gets in for his bowling)
Baber
Asad

Also side note to everyone that is slating our batsmens, it’s not only us with this issue. Cricket as a whole isn’t blessed with that many world class batsman atm probably because of T20 but that’s a whole other conversation.

Look at Australia without smith, New Zealand with Williamson this test, England batting down to 9 to compensate for the average top order and how many runs would India have made without Kholi in there last 2 series?

Imagine the difference kholi, Smith, Williamson or root would make! We are a world class batsman away from being a top 4 team.

I'd say it's about time saad plays... although I wouldn't be surprised if they retain the same 11. Seniors zindabad.

Even Shadab can do a better job than Bilal.
Hafeez can be replaced by anyone.

Captain sahab brought in Hafeez to make good use of his 'domestic' form. 18 saal me na hua hafeez se.

It was a mistake not to play Fakhar Zaman after he scored 160 runs in his first test. Hafeez is good for Limited overs cricket not for the Tests. Bilal Can also be changed, Shahdab can be tried as the 2nd spinner / Allrounder.
However both these players are not even in the squad.
so Changes need to happen in the squad now.
However Mickey might give a last chance to Hafeez?

Pakistan have to bring a slow left arm spinner as soon as possible otherwise they will struggle in every series.

01. Azhar Ali
02. Imam ul Haq
03. Haris Sohail
04. Asad Shafiq
05. Saad Ali
06. Babar Azam
07. Sarfaraz Ahmad (C & wk)
08. Hasan Ali
09. Yasir Shah
10. Zafar gowhar or Irfan jnr or Asgar
11. Mohammad Abas

Fly in a proper spinner like Zafar.

Drop Hafeez, Open with Azhar. Move everyone up one slot and put Saad Ali in at 6.

Even before the debacle yesterday two things were blindingly obvious
- (not for the first time and I don't think it will be the last time) Hafeez's selection in the team as a genuine opener is not just questionable but appalling. Yes he scored a century two games ago but we all know what follows such high scores. The only way his selection could be justified is if he bowls more than 10 overs every innings but it seems as if Sarfaraz doesn't want to make him bowl, which in my opinion is rather unfortunate as Hafeez is certainly a better bowler than most of the specialist offspinners we have presently. I personally feel that Hafeez could be a much better player down the order at 6 but I don't think that option is under consideration. So imo, IF sarfaraz is prepared to use Hafeez as a second spinner then he could be retained else he must go.
- Bilal Asif MUST go. Have always maintained that he is a hack. What he did against Aus was just pure luck and the way he has batted clearly shows that he doesn't have the temperament or patience to effectively utilize the limited talent that he has. If it was up to me I would replace him with Shaheen given the ordinary spin options that we have. We already have Haris (and Hafeez if selected) to assist Yasir. But I think the team management will more likely go for another spinner.

I would go with this team.

1. Imam
2. Azhar
3. Harris S.
4. Asad S.
5. Babar A.
6. M. Hafeez ( Needs to play as an off spinning all rounder)
7. Sarfraz A.
8. Faheem A. (A hard hitting left hander will be ideal to counter the leg spinner and
left arm spinner)
9. Yasir S.
10. M. Abbas
11. Hassan A. ( Cant drop him after his 5fer but surely demote him to 11 after that
ugly shot)

We really have short memories and forget the guy played 2 good innings which lead to victories one in Ireland and another contribution in Lords test match victory. Dubai wicket normally has something in it for pacers and can surely play a part to hold one end. Moreover, we will need Faheem to be ready come South Africa so its better that we start working towards that. Bilal Asif is anyways not adding anything to the team. For spin you already have Yasir Shah, Harris Sohail and Hafeez.

Hard to believe Pakistan is struggling to find new spinners.. in UAE you should have atleast 3 proper full time spinners selected in 15...

Fluke innings so much edges and drop catches we need amir yamin as fast bowler allrounder in tests and odi faheem only t20i if he improve hitting

Fakhar will return for Hafeez if he has recovered from his injury.

Bilal Asif will be dropped for an all rounder.

Bilal Asif deserves to be dropped for that shot he played.

Unforgivable. Hassan Ali too but we need his bowling.

I think they'll play the same XI. and for the 1st time I wish that pak may lose this series 3-0. This might bring some positive changes.

Same XI from my pov but players need to think carefully about what their roles are in the batting atleast.

Please bowl Hafeez against their left-handers, Sarfaraz. That is partly the reason he is in the team.

This should be the last chance for Mohammad Hafeez. If he does not have a good game, he might as well retire from test cricket.

Lets not forget that there is a series happening also! So how can Pakistan defeat NZ?

Fakhar
Baba
Haris
Shah
Hasan
Abbas

The only guys who warrant a place in the team.

If they don't change the initial squad for first 2 Tests, then I actually would go with 3 pacers - Abbas, Hasan, Afridi & Yasir makes a better attack than Bilal in it. Afridi has pace and height, he can't be worse than Bilal on any wicket. Also, Hasan has shown that there is reverse swing available - if Afridi can put some of his yorkers on spot, he'll trouble Kiwis. I think, he took 7 wickets against Pom Lions, and that batting line up is no where a pushover.

Batsmen picks themselves :(, Usman could have replaced MoHa, but that "hole" is covered as well - Azhar won't open to keep both slots fixed for "specialist" openers. If he wasn't Captain, Sarfraz could have got "injured", but I guess that's too much to ask for.

Speaking to PakPassion.net, the Pakistan Head Coach has stated that there are no plans to include any players from the Pakistan A side which defeated England Lions in the 4-Day game in Abu Dhabi for the 2nd Test against New Zealand as the squad was valid for 2 Tests. He also said that if fit, Fakhar Zaman and Shadab Khan will be coming back for the 3rd test. In a query about Shaheen Shah Afridi, the Pakistan Head Coach stated that he is still with the team and that they were getting his loads up in anticipation of the upcoming tour of South Africa.

May be another thrashing defeat and they will drop hafeez to select him for Sa tour again:farhat.I have been laughing at some of your posts regarding Mr.Blessed and Mr.Specialist captain but you have proved me wrong.I had neevr imagined that he will be playing tests in UAE and i am now even accepting that he will play 2023 WCas well as 2020 T20 WC to add some experience.

01. Imam ul Haq..........not a merit based selection
02. Azhar Ali......should be dropped
03. Haris Sohail.....lets see
04. Asad Shafiq.....should be dropped
05. Saad Ali......Usman S or Saud S deserve this spot
06. Babar Azam......should be dropped, needs to score in domesitc
07. Sarfaraz Ahmad (C & wk)....worse form of his life
08. Hasan Ali
09. Yasir Shah

You see the problem with this team?

New Blackcaps spin hero Ajaz Patel's three-years toiling in domestic cricket paid dividends with his match-winning performance against Pakistan in Abu Dhabi.

The Central Districts left-arm orthodox bowler took 5/59 in the second innings as New Zealand bowled Pakistan out for 171 to win the first test.

Cricketing world applauds instant-classic test win
Williamson celebrates one of best career wins
Patel made his first-class debut for the Stags in 2015 and has been the leading wicket-taker in four-day cricket since, taking 194 wickets at 29.82.

That form earned the 30-year-old a deserved national call for the three-test series, a selection rewarded with a man-of-the-match outing.

Blackcaps coach Gary Stead has been impressed with Patel's professionalism, noting how unnerved he was despite the occasion.

"This is my first tour away with Ajaz, he's got some experience on his side and I think that has really helped him," Stead said.

"He is very calm under pressure and that isn't easy during your first test match but he has that maturity that has really helped him."

Stead was also in awe of the typically gutsy effort from Neil Wagner who bowled 13-overs on the bounce, in tandem with Patel, taking 2/27 including the match-turning scalp of Asad Shafiq.

The 46-year-old Cantabrian described the duo's efforts as 'phenomenal'.

"Neil's lion-hearted effort, he is just renowned for that and he did again for us in this test," Stead noted.

"The bowling partnership there was phenomenal, bowling 22-23 overs in a row was a sterling effort and I am really proud of the way they went."

Stead said he always felt his side were a chance of getting a positive result, even after being rolled for 153 on the first day.

The nature of the wicket caused difficulties for batsmen establishing themselves, leading to wickets falling in clusters.

Stead asserted any lead over 150 was defendable as long as the Blackcaps competed for every single ball.

"I always believed we were in with a chance with the way the match had played out with wickets falling regularly," he said.

"To be in that position to give ourselves a sniff to win the match in the final session of play was all we could really do and I guess you just let the cricketing gods decide which way it will go and we were fortunate it went ours.

"You're not going to win too many test matches scoring 153 in the first innings so we always had to keep fighting and fighting

"My message centred around if we can lose all those wickets in clumps then so can they, as long as we sustained pressure.

"The game could have gone either way but it was nice to come out on the right side of it. It's only part of the job done - we have two more test matches ahead and I'm pretty sure they will both have results."

The second test starts on Saturday night in Dubai.

Dubai - Two days after one of the most sensational wins in Test cricket, New Zealand are preparing in Dubai for the second Test against Pakistan with coach Gary Stead expecting an even tougher contest.

New Zealand pulled off an extraordinary four-run win in Abu Dhabi on Monday as they defended a modest target of 176. Debutant left-arm spinner Ajaz Patel took 5-59 as Pakistan's last seven wickets fell for just 41 runs.

It was the fifth tightest win in terms of runs in the 141-year history of Test cricket.

The win was Stead's first as head coach since he replaced Mike Hesson in August and he believes it will change Pakistan's mind-set ahead of the second Test which starts on Saturday.

England's cricket captain Joe Root spoke about Moeen Ali after his side beat India by 60 runs to clinch the Test Match series 3-1 on Sunday (2nd September) - Ali took nine wickets across the two innings.

"Pakistan are a good team, hard to beat over here," said Stead. "That's what makes this really, really pleasing. But they'll be better for it, and if they were taking us lightly, they won't be now.

"I expect them to be better and I expect us to be better as well."

New Zealand have not beaten Pakistan in an away series since 1969 and Stead thinks they need further improvement in order to change that.

"I don't think we've won too many Tests when we've scored 153 in the first innings," said Stead of New Zealand's first innings total.

"It was always going to be that we need to keep fighting and fighting, and my message to the boys was that if you can lose wickets in clumps, then why can't we do that back to them through sustained pressure," said Stead.

Fast bowler Neil Wagner, who became the eighth New Zealand bowler to complete 150 Test wickets in Abu Dhabi, praised the team's spirit.

"It was an amazing fightback," said Wagner. "We knew we'd be in with a chance if we kept fighting. That last hour (on day four) was quite freakish."

Wagner broke the dangerous stand of 82 between Azhar Ali (65) and Asad Shafiq (45) and then claimed Yasir Shah's wicket to play his role.

"We know that even if we are a little bit behind we can keep fighting, we know what we can achieve. It was bloody tough, hard work, a big fight and it will just get harder. (Pakistan) will come back hard.

"Hopefully we can do something similar and pretty special."

Wagner's two wickets in the final innings were put in the shade by Patel whose five-wicket haul landed him the man of the match award in his first Test.

"It was pretty awesome to see a guy like Patel come in in his first Test," said Wagner of the 30-year-old India-born spinner.

"It took me about eight Tests to have my first win, so to play a special part in a win, see a smile on his face, was a cool moment."

The second Test starts in Dubai from Saturday while the third and final, again in Abu Dhabi from December 3.

This should be the last chance for Mohammad Hafeez. If he does not have a good game, he might as well retire from test cricket.

He won't retire from test cricket. He's playing well past 2019 WC. That T20 series performance against NZ and Australia will haunt us for a long time.

Babar at no.3 as that is the way forward. Lets debut Saad Ali and see what he is made up of. Shafiq at no.6 as he does not know how to bat elsewhere.

Cricket: Kane Williamson demands more improvement from Black Caps

Black Caps captain Kane Williamson has stressed improvement if his side are to build upon their famous test victory over Pakistan this week.

The dramatic four-run victory gave New Zealand their first test win away from home since 2014, but the fact they needed a Pakistan batting collapse to accomplish it has left Williamson pushing for more in the second test which starts in Dubai tomorrow night.

"It is important we look to build on a number of parts going into the next game for sure.

"We've got a lot more tough cricket to come and it's important we learn from some parts of this game that we will need to build on."

While ecstatic with the fight of his side in the fourth innings, and the match-winning performances of bowlers Ajaz Patel and Neil Wagner, Williamson is aware the game could have gone either way.

"I suppose if they were on the right side of the result, a number of questions would have a slightly different line of thinking.

"We would certainly have wanted a few more in our first innings. It wasn't easy and both teams would want to reflect and improve going into the next match."

Black Caps coach Gary Stead is expecting his side to improve upon their batting performances — mustering just 153 and 249 — but warns that Pakistan should also be better in the second test.

"I don't think you'll win too many test matches when you only score 153 in the first innings, so it was always going to be that we had to keep fighting and fighting," Stead said.

"[Pakistan will] be better for it and if they've taken us lightly, well they certainly won't be now. I expect them to be better and I expect we can better as well."

Stead is predicting both of the remaining two tests to have results, with conditions in Dubai expected to be even lower and slower than in Abu Dhabi, and Williamson says it'll require some tweaks to their strategy if they want to claim a rare away series victory.

"We'll need to put our heads down and adapt, and be a little bit better as well."

Dubai: The man who spun New Zealand to a stunning victory in the first Test against Pakistan has vowed to keep the pressure on the home team when the two sides meet again in the second Test in Dubai on Saturday. Left-arm spinner Ajaz Patel had a dream start to his Test career, claiming a memorable 5-59 in Abu Dhabi to help New Zealand pull off a sensational four-run win after setting Pakistan a modest 176-run target. The 30-year-old, who collected the man of the match award in Abu Dhabi, said keeping up the pressure is the key in a Test.

"I think it will be pretty much the same plan, to keep the pressure for a longer period of time and keep bowling good balls in good areas," Patel told AFP. "A good ball is a good ball in Test cricket and batters respect that. Likewise they will put pressure back on us so it's a bit of a cat and mouse game, backward and forward, so we will do our best." Pakistan have been stung by the criticism of their self-destructive batting which saw them throw away their last seven wickets for just 41 runs. The Black Caps are preparing for the backlash.

"Pakistan batsmen are good players of spin and after that defeat they will go hard on us so we will be ready for that," said Patel. Another win would give New Zealand their first series triumph away to Pakistan since Graham Dowling led them to a 1-0 success in 1969.

- Kiwi resilience -
Patel praised New Zealand's never-say-die approach. "To be honest we had the belief that it can happen on this wicket which wasn't easy to bat on and we kept that belief that we can pull that off," said Patel. Patel said New Zealand have a tradition of fighting hard. "I think it's a very much a New Zealand environment thing, that is that everything is possible at any point of time and we always go out and fight regardless of chasing or defending a small total or a large total.

"Cricket is a funny game and one ball can change things very quickly so it's one of those things. If you keep fighting every ball you walk off satisfied and we take this approach in every game."Patel, born in Mumbai before migrating to New Zealand as a six-year-old kid, was selected on the tour after his stellar performance for Central Stags during which he took 48 wickets last year. And he looks forward to playing against the country of his birth next year when India tour New Zealand.

"I will be fortunate if I am able to play in that series," said Patel. "As a growing Indian you are always passionate about cricket and you watch a lot of great Indian players just like I have watched New Zealand players." Patel hopes he can test his skills against Virat Kohli. "Kohli will be a great challenge," said Patel of the Indian maestro. "You always want to challenge yourself against the best and he is the best in the world.

"So if that comes I will cherish it and give it the best crack." The second Test between Pakistan and New Zealand starts in Dubai on Saturday.

Looks like a series loss on the way will dent the confidence massively for tour to SA
Hope not

I will be in the stadium tomorrow ( from 2nd session) and i am confident that Pakistan will bounce back.
Last time i was in the dubai stadium was to see 3rd day of Pak v Aus 1st Test. With 280 lead i felt that follow on should have been imposed.
So pakistsn have 2 jobs tomorrow to bury the demons of abu dhabi test and dubai test.
Prediction: pakistan to level the series up 1-1.
