PCB invites Bandula Warnapura and Javed Miandad as special guests at Rawalpindi Test

Lahore, 8 December 2019:

In a show of gratitude, respect and appreciation for their services to cricket, the Pakistan Cricket Board has invited Sri Lanka’s Bandula Warnapura and Javed Miandad of Pakistan as special guests for the historic Rawalpindi Test, which will be played from 11-15 December.

Warnapura and Miandad were opposite captains in the first-ever Test between the two countries at Karachi’s National Stadium in March 1982. Pakistan had won that Test by 204 runs after scoring 396 and 301-4d. Sri Lanka scored 344 and 149.

The two celebrated and respected cricketers will take part in the captains’ photo-shoot with the series trophy on 10 December, while special presentations will be made to them during lunch interval on day one of the Test.

PCB Chairman Ehsan Mani said: “I am most grateful to the two distinguished cricketers for accepting our invitation to attend the historic occasion despite their busy schedules. This means a lot to Pakistan and its cricket followers across the globe.

“11 December will be a very special day in Pakistan cricket history and it is appropriate that it is celebrated with Bandula Warnapura and Javed Miandad on our side. They are icons of cricket, whose services to the game are unmatched.

“The PCB respects and values all its international cricketers and this is a small token of our love, appreciation and respect for them. The PCB will continue to acknowledge and hold similar events for others cricketer as we are now road to hosting regular international cricket at home.”

Easy win for Pakistan

Predicting a century in both innings by Babar

Sri lanka look stronger in all departments, this should be last series for some of pakistans TTFs who have been poor for last two years.

How's the marketing been? Hoping for sell out crowds.

How's the marketing been? Hoping for sell out crowds.

Marketing has been very poor.

My cousin in Pindi who is a huge cricket fan was not even aware that the match is going ahead. He says the marketing/promotion has been terrible.

Also the ticket prices are starting at 50 rupees but it’s with no seating I believe.

PCB really should invite colleges, schools for free as part of a school trip to the test matches and let them engage with players as part of a developing programme ie communication etc. Should also distribute leaflets/brochures of the game and free entry for specific times.

I hope I am wrong but I expect empty stadium.

Looks like some stands have seats while some don't.

That is appalling. What are the PCB doing? This is a very significant series for us.

One fan looking to buy tickets stated:

Why are tickets only being sold for Shoaib Akhtar enclosure for Rawalpindi test match? Is PCB welcoming return of test cricket after 10 years by opening just one enclosure which doesn't even have seats?! Why are other enclosures unavailable (closed)?

After nearly 11 years of exile, the thought of an empty stadium in Pakistan's first home Test fills me with dread.

However Pakistan has never been a great Test venue. Even before the exile, empty stands were the norm even for India series, marketing or not.

Test cricket is dead in the subcontinent. I doubt people even watch it on tv there.

Test cricket returning after a decade to empty seats would be such a shame and will make future tours more difficult.

Lots of school childeen will be expected.

Asia almost always has empty stands. Stop kidding yourselves guys.

My 11:
Abid Ali
Masood
Azhar Ali
Babar Azam
Fawad Alam
Asad Shafiq
Rizwan
Yasir Shah
Shaheen Afridi
Usman Shinwari
Naseem Shah

Shinwari is flying under the radar, my prediction is he will be the best bowler this series. His wicket-taking ability is massively underrated.
I hope he gets both games

Should have held test in faisalabad atleast people would have turned up to watch

I have not seen any pictures of srilankans landing yet its nly 4 days left surely they would have arrived by now

My XI

1. Imam ul-Haq
2. Shan Masood
3. Azhar Ali
4. Fawad Alam
5. Babar Azam (can be switched with Fawad)
6. Asad Shafiq
7. Mohammad Rizwan
8. Yasir Shah
9. Shaheen Shah Afridi
10. Mohammad Abbas
11. Usman Shinwari

News are out that Imam is likely to play ahead of Abid. If that happens, I will literally not watch the match.

Why do you want Abid to play?
The guy is not a long term option.

I fully support Imam. He's just getting his career started and needs just one big knock to really start scoring test runs

Pakistani's aren't going to turn up. In the last 11 years all of the superstars they're used to watching have well and truly disappeared to be replaced by duds who nobody could care less about. Then add to that the calibre of the opposition. I bet most casual fans inside Pak couldn't name more than a couple of Sri Lankan players, none of whom excite in the slightest.

There is nothing to go and watch.

Several key questions here for the Impeachment of Misbah-ul-Haq.

Charge 1: That Kashif Bhatti is not the second best spinner in the country. Or even the spinner who bats the best. And at 33, most of his peers overseas have already retired.

Charge 2: Does Misbah know whom his best pace bowlers are? What are the numbers to justify selecting Imran Khan (domestic bowling average 49) or Usman Shinwari (15 wickets in 6 matches)?

Charge 3: The Chief Selector has recalled a 34 year old batsman with 781 domestic runs at an average of 71 instead of a 24 year old who scored 864 runs at an average of 79.

Other than couple of batsman, Sri Lanka team is weak. Is Herath playing?

If it came down to it I’d probably play the SL basher Shinwari ahead of Abbas.

Naseem if fit should start.

The PCB have gone completely mad.

Bandula Warnapura as Guest of Honour?

This man led a Rebel Tour to Apartheid South Africa.

For that he was banned from all cricket for 25 years.

I wouldn’t let a person who has done that into the stadium for anything.

Seriously, I don’t know how any self-respecting human being can meet such a person. Let alone make him the Guest of Honour.

Yet Ehsan Mani calls such a creature “distinguished”!

I would have loved to see Pakistan bring in an all rounder at number 7 , but they will not.

He should be selected too.....No need of imam but...

Imam deserves.a go. He has played 7 of his 10 11 tests in SENA,
Not an easy way to start a test career. He has to start delivering now. We have invested in him on the tough tours, and he has shown a few glimpses, but now he must push on.

I'm cool with picking imam

I agree.

You can play a top three of Imam and Sami Aslam opening with Shan Masood at 3.

The problem is that Misbah ignores the data, which tells us that Azhar Ali is now a liability outside Asia. So you are stuck with a geriatric passenger in the top three, who is blocking the development of more deserving batsmen.

We may have to move this way, depending on what has happened with haris. Pre that test in Aus he was our 2nd best test bat since the start of 2018, so ideally I would like him to bat 3.

Imam
Shan
Haris

I would invest in Sami as the back up opener tho rather than abid

Pakistan’s stars can’t want for the Rawalpindi Test

• Rashid Latif: “Ten years is a long wait and this wait is about to end, I can’t wait for the first ball to be bowled”

• Moin Khan: “This series will not only mark the return of Test cricket in the country, but also initiate the process of Pakistan’s ascendency in the pinnacle format of the game”

• Shahid Afridi: “It’s due to the PCB’s untiring efforts that Test cricket is being restored in the country”

• Mohammad Yousuf: “Sri Lanka team coming to Pakistan for Test matches is a big achievement and fantastic news for cricket fans”

• Shoaib Malik: “Test cricket coming back to Pakistan is quite an emotional moment for me”

• Umar Gul: “I request all cricket fans to support both teams since cricket will be the eventual winner”

Rawalpindi, 9 December 2019:

Wednesday, December 11 will be a historic day in Pakistan cricket. When the first ball is bowled at Pindi Cricket Stadium it will mark the return of Test cricket in the country for over ten years.

While the whole nation is waiting for the momentous occasion, former players are elated at Pakistan’s return to the Test map and have expressed their joy.

Rashid Latif, who played three Tests against Sri Lanka in 1994 and 2002, said: “I was not born when Pakistan played their first-ever Test at home, but I have no doubts the fans and followers of that era must have felt the same as I am feeling today. It is a great feeling.

“Ten years is a long wait and it is about to end, I can’t wait for the first ball to be bowled.

“I am especially happy for the next generation of cricketers as they will now be able to see their Test cricketers in action at their home grounds and understand why Test cricket is so critical to the global reputation and standing of the team and the players.

“Likewise, the present day cricketers will also get the real feel of Test cricket when they will play in front of their fans, families and media, which will give them that extra motivation they have been missing while playing offshore.”

Moin Khan, who captained Pakistan in the March 2000 Test against Sri Lanka in Karachi which Pakistan won by 222 runs, said: “This series will not only mark the return of Test cricket in the country, but will also initiate the process of Pakistan’s ascendency in the pinnacle format of the game. You have to play regularly at your home grounds to become a force to be reckoned with which was something Pakistan missed for over 10 years.

“We all fell in love with this game after watching the greats of ours times before our own eyes. Lot of us used to miss schools, colleges or universities to watch Test cricket and catch a glimpse of stars like Imran Khan, Zaheer Abbas, Javed Miandad, Wasim Akram and so many others.

“Though I don’t condone bunking schools now, but that culture will be back when younger kids and teenagers will fill in the stands to watch top-class players like Babar Azam, Asad Shafiq and Yasir Shah.

“While I thank Sri Lanka for breaking the ice, I will not shy away from appreciating the hard work of the PCB who made this happen. A lot must have happened behind the scenes, which we are not aware of, but the results do indicate that their efforts have come to fruition.”

Former captain Shahid Afridi, who played a Test against Sri Lanka in Colombo in March 2006, said: “I would like to thank the Sri Lanka cricket board for sending their team for the Test series, and I also want to thank the PCB for their efforts in ensuring the series takes place in Pakistan. It’s due to the PCB’s untiring efforts and resolve that Test cricket is being restored in the country.

“Countries and boards must always support each other. In the past we have stood firm with Sri Lanka in all our cricket commitments and I am happy they have reciprocated our support.

“Fans want to see Test cricket since it is the ultimate and most historic format of the game. I am sure all stakeholders have made adequate arrangements to make the occasion successful. I hope the fans have an easy passage to the stadium and can get to enjoy the game.

“I wish the very best to both teams and also wish the best to PCB and hope they make this a memorable event and occasion for all cricket fans.”

Mohammad Yousuf, who featured in seven home Tests against Sri Lanka said: “It is indeed a great occasion, Pakistan is a sporting nation and we love cricket. Sri Lanka team coming to Pakistan for Test matches is a big achievement and fantastic news for cricket fans who can see their heroes play in front of them.

“I have some wonderful memories of playing cricket in Pakistan, I really hope this series will turnout well and we will see some good quality Test cricket which will be enjoyed by all.”

Shoaib Malik, who featured in the last completed Test in Pakistan in March 2009, said: “Test cricket coming back to Pakistan is quite an emotional moment for me. When I retired from red-ball cricket, I knew I was letting go, at a certain level, the essence of cricket.

“I knew Test cricket will return to Pakistan Inshallah but now that it’s here, I’m feeling very emotional.

“I wish I was there in person to witness this but also see our stadiums filled with fans and enjoy a long form of cricket in this era of fast life.

“I must thank the Sri Lankan team and the Sri Lankan Board for taking this step and playing an instrumental role in bringing international cricket back to our country and to our people. We will never forget, may that time never come, but Inshallah you will find us hand in hand with Sri Lanka and their people in times of need.”

Umar Gul, who played alongside Shoaib Malik in the Test remembered for Younis Khan’s triple-century in Karachi in 2009, said: “I am extremely excited to see Test cricket returning to Pakistan. I welcome the Sri Lankan team in Pakistan. I want to thank them for their help in the revival of Test cricket in our beloved country.

“It was always an honour for me to play international cricket in Pakistan and I can’t wait to see this Test series. I request all cricket fans to support both teams since cricket will be the eventual winner.”

Can't Want ???:misbah

guys I had a look at the squads. I am shocked. I have to say Sri Lanka looks stronger overall. I predict 1- 1 for this series.

Pakistan batting has been a huge let down.

Imam deserves.a go. He has played 7 of his 10 11 tests in SENA,

no i think he is done for tests
Good odi player but not suited for tests.
You think he will be effective in Pakistan? his first class record isn't exactly Impressive. Sami aslam would be a better option.

If Babar can get 15-20 matches to prove himself, just because he's a good ODI player then why can't Imam?
Babar used to average 30 in FIRST class cricket too now look at him.

The level of hypocrisy in that post is unbelievable

Seriously don't know why Warnapura deserves to "clean toilets with his tongue" for touring SA when Boycott was "within his rights to do so"

He will never answer your post!!
Haven't seen a biggest hypocrite than this guy

Well, I work in the hospital literally 10 min(would be 5 min if not for the crazy traffic) drive from the stadium. Would love to go to see the match but there is forecast of heavy rain on thursday and friday. so it will probably be a draw sadly. But I might go see it on saturday or sunday just for watching it live or if we have get a low scoring encounter.

I don't think anybody comes into test cricket and starts AVG 50. They take 5 to 10 games to get going, and build up from there.

Is it a fast-bowling pitch? Why is everyone picking 3 fast bowlers and 1 spinner and 1-2 part time spinners?

Not an easy way to start a test career. He has to start delivering now. We have invested in him on the tough tours, and he has shown a few glimpses, but now he must push on.

I'm cool with picking imam

Who can forget Imam nicking off to the Mighty De Grandhomme and being struck in the head by Boult in the UAE...

Babar was averaging 24 after the same number of test matches and we persisted with him even though we had better options. Why can't we persist with Imam?

I didn't support Babar staying in the team for as long as he did. He should've been dropped for a bit.

Even then, sticking with a player doesn't mean they'll become a good player. Imam is not good enough as of yet, and he should be sent to domestic cricket.

Apparently the selectors (asides from Misbah) wanted to pick the spinner Nauman Ali for this Test series since he has been very good in QeA, but Misbah overruled all of them and retained 33 year old Kashif Bhatti in the squad.

What is Misbah's fetish for older men; I'll never get that!

Rawalpindi wickets has been good for pace bowling historically (Though we will have to see if its nature has changed after a decade or so) and also there is forecast of rain and cloud cover on 2-3 of the days.

Nauman Ali is also 33. Should Kashif Bhatti have been picked for Aus or not is arguable but he had outstanding stats in last year's QAE trophy however, as he was selected so dropping him without even giving him chance in a single match would have been pretty unfair.

That’s sort of the point.

Even the possible replacement was old whereas we do have people like Zafar Gohar etc doing well.

yea no. imam is not babar. He doesnt have the skills to be as good as babar. Babar already showed better application when he was younger hence the board kept persisting with him.

Would’ve genuinely loved to have seen this side line up for our comeback test match in Pakistan. Alas with Misbah in charge there’s no chance of getting anywhere near this in a million years unfortunately.

1) abid Ali
2) sami aslam
3) babar azam
4) Haris sohail
5) Fawad alam
6) Muhammad Rizwan
7) Aamir yamin
8) yasir shah
9) Zafar gohar
10) shaheen shah
11) naseem shah/Mohammad abbas

12th man) zeeshan Malik

What a refreshing and promising selection this would’ve been. Moving on from failures and has beens like shan, imam, azhar, shafiq, Kashif bhatti etc.
anyone who’s watched even a glimpse of bhatti in FC cricket can see he’s absolutely dire. He has no place lining up for Pakistan. It’s a travesty Zafar gohar, the best spinner in Pakistan continues to get overlooked at senior level, he truly is the Fawad alam of bowlers in Pakistan.

We also need to invest time in Aamir yamin as the need for a seam bowling all rounder in test cricket is a must, especially overseas. Yamin imo is a quality batsman who has the temperament to stick around and value his wicket. His bowling isn’t the most penetrative but with the new ball especially he has potential.

Also, zeeshan Malik is THE future of Pakistani batting alongside babar. He needs to be brought in ASAP and given time and backing to succeed. I haven’t seen such a technically correct batsman with a hunger to make runs on the domestic circuit for a long long time. We need to invest properly in him and other promising batsmen like saif badar, saud Shakeel, Abdullah shafique and ahsan ali ASAP and integrate them into national team colours.

I genuinely think I could do a better job then Misbah as a chief selector of Pakistani cricket. The guy is horribly out his depth and terribly misinformed with his judgement calls and decision making. He is doing serious damage to Pakistani cricket and needs to retire or risk ruining even his playing career legacy as one of our more successful captains. Sad times, I hope he does the right thing for the betterment and benefit of his country.

In regards to charge 3 Fawad has been consistent for years and i think if Fawad wasn't selected Misbah would've felt a lot of wrath for the favouritism policy that the selection process has been marred with along with the abysmal tour of Australia.

Sami Aslam is an opener and as the brother below mentioned Fawad was the best middle/lower middle order batsman that performed.

I would have been satisfied with either Imran Butt or Sami Aslam's selection more so Imran Butt as his run scoring was more consistent throughout the tournament. However, i think Sami Aslam's selection got hampered due to his controversial decision to draw a match during this QeA season when he was captain, which required his team to get 83 runs in 10 overs in which he declared after 2-3 overs. This made his coach mad and as such Sami lost the captaincy.

To be honest there is no honesty in Pakistan's selection and as such i would say you need someone who will be neutral which i think would be either Younis Khan or Muhammad Yousaf.

It would be inexcusable to play two terrible openers and leave out Haris or Fawad from the playing XI.

It needs to be one of those terrible openers along with Azhar since he is a walking weight regardless.

Shan/Imam/Abid
Azhar
Haris
Babar
Shafiq
Fawad
Rizwan
Yasir
Shaheen
Abbas
Naseem

Never understand the Pakistani's hype for the Sri lankan team. Sure maybe when Sl made it to like 7 icc tournaments semi-finals in a row or something understandable. But this team has barely done anything.

He will never answer your post!!
Haven't seen a biggest hypocrite than this guy

Of course he won't. He will affect indifference or even ignorance about his post. The level of hypocrisy and hubris of some of the so-called luminaries of this forum is quite repulsive at times. And the greatest irony in this case is that he has probably internalized the same phenomenon that he is criticizing. Can't really see any reason other than racial discrimination for Warnapura to not have the same rights as Boycott.

Anyways, to positive things. Finally test cricket back in Pakistan. Really looking forward to it. Hopefully rain won't spoil the fun and Fawad will finally get a chance to shut up his critics. Although I have a suspicion he might be benched in favor of Haris.

Anyways,

they beat SA in SA

The level of hypocrisy in that post is unbelievable

Will direct readers to the thread below where Boycott who was also a part of an apartheid tour was eulogized at the time of his knighthood
http://www.pakpassion.net/ppforum/showthread.php?288527-Arise-Sir-Geoffrey-Boycott
and especially post #31 where the same poster has declared that Boycott was within his rights to visit SA

Seriously don't know why Warnapura deserves to "clean toilets with his tongue" for touring SA when Boycott was "within his rights to do so"
Very good post.

I am a hypocrite.

My admiration and affection for Boycott as a child prior to his participation in a Rebel Tour blinds new to how despicable his behaviour was.

You’re right, and I apologise. I should be as harsh on Boycott as I am on Warnapura.
