Fed up with constant selection rejections, a young cricketer in Pakistan tried to immolate himself during a first-class match at a stadium in Lahore, accusing selectors of demanding bribe to give him a chance.

Ghulam Haider Abbas, a right-arm fast bowler, barged into the Lahore City Cricket Association (LCCA) ground while a match was in progress and tried to pour petrol on himself.

Some alert onlookers watching the match of the Quaid-e- Azam Trophy rushed and stopped the budding cricketer and raised an alarm after which some LCCA officials pacified him.

Abbas, who belongs to the east zone in the Lahore association, said that he was fed up with false promises by officials that he would get a chance to play in first-class cricket matches for the Lahore team.

“I have been performing well at the club and zonal level but they keep on ignoring me because I am from a poor background,” the pacer claimed.

“At the end, they finally told me that if I want to play for the Lahore team, I should pay them money. Today I came here totally fed up and wanted to end my life,” he said.

Abbas warned that if his plea is not heard by the Pakistan Cricket Board, then he would set himself on fire at the main entrance of the Gaddafi stadium.

“If I die, the east zone officials and the LCCA head should be held responsible for it because they are not selecting players on merit,” Abbas added.

Just what the need was for one to do. Fawad Alam next.....

Shameful the way the whole system is being run and abused daily.

This is the system we have in place.
carry on praising the PCB and it's cronies....

One of the most bizarre headlines you will ever see.
We have no idea how good he is, he may be not picked fairly as he lacks ability but it wouldn't surprise me if injustice was being done to him as this is the PCB we are talking about. It's a good thing he was stopped

PCB is still an immensely corrupt board and cricket in Pakistan is still in a poor state. No one is selected on merit, it's all biased. It's so sad how fans have become delusional after the miraculous champions trophy win that domestic cricket is all good. Its awful to say the least. Awful pitches, awful match fee, awful selections, and worst of all FAVOURITISM CULTURE. This country will never progress until we get rid of this favouritism culture!

Shouldn't ever be selected for a FC team after this idiotic behaviour.

I had no idea what the title meant till I clicked the thread, which is ironic.

What are his stats?

Obviously startling behavior and unacceptable.

BUT it's clear corruption is rampant as it's always been. You'd expect them to investigate his claims but indeed it'll be brushed aside.

There are other professions in life too. May be he's not good enough for them too like Cricket.

Goes to show these guys have nothing else but cricket to fall back on. It's shameful and disgusting what we've become, not just as a cricketing board but a country, with unethical practices.

Feel for the kid, and those like him.

This is why I keep saying that a big country with a large population does not necessarily equate to more talent. Significant number of talented players simply don't bother to risk their livelyhood pursuing cricket as a profession because of corruption at lower levels and lets face it the odds of getting to play Intl Cricket are quite literally 1 in hundreds of millions in a country like India.

Exactly. Can't believe few shallow folks are calling out the kid. Obviously he was driven so far beyond the edge that he was ready to kill himself.

So.... When a professional cricketer goes through depression, most people sympathies but when a kid, who is clearly severely depressed, excluding one or two, people calls him a nutter.... Sad state of humanity as represented here.

Why the change of standard? I think I can guess the answer.

Very sad to hear such things happen. All knew nepotism and corruption exists in the entire country not just PCB. But this kid need some counselling.

The kid needs help obviously.

However theres a massive difference between someone struggling with depression, hiding it and then letting it build and build until he snaps and some kid running onto a field mid match and pouring freaking petrol on himself over non selection for a cricket team.

The first case is a legitimate illness seen all too commonly unfortunately, the second is exhibiting signs of legitimate madness. Both require vastly differing treatments.

Both need serious help, this guy more so.

The more cynical individual would look at the last two lines and almost think hes doing it to get himself into the team....

On absolutely no planet is "Select me or I'll light myself on fire and then the selectors may be charged with my death" sane, guy is nuts hence my use of the term "nutter", thats a massive difference from a professional cricketer going through depression.

Who in his rational thought thinks this is the way to get selected for the team?

Now, if he ever had a chance at selection he will be ostracized because of these antics.

No one wants a zulqurnain haider type person in their team.

Hopefully he gets the help he needs.

No offense, but you have no idea how cricket (at club level) is run and administered in Pakistan mate.

Why does that matter? Next this guy will threaten to jump off a cliff if he isn't selected for the test team and then warn the management that he'll shoot himself if he's not given the captaincy.

No need for such characters in the cricketing set-up of Pakistan. He clearly needs help and his cricket should be the least of anyone's worries.

I doubt this guy should be selected after this stupid act. However there must be an inquisition about which officials asked for a bribe so that he can be selected
