Pakistan's MQM 'received Indian funding' [BBC Report]

Step one. The next time elections are held, don't go along with the whole cityfolk to vote for this party.

Sounds simple, doesn't it? But there appears to be a lot of slip between the cup and the lip in this game.

I am not sure Sloggy bro is a big believer in democracy tbh and is more adept at pointing at external causes/agents for the faults and civil wars at home. That is strange but I guess different people have different coping mechanisms.

There's some theory going on which actually has me convinced for the first time that mqm are raw/Indian agents atleast as far as the very top cadre is concerned

It's just too convenient that when the entire country's attention is focussed on the Indian atrocities in Kashmir and when the entire country is more or less on same page regarding it, this mqm drama comes up and now takes away all attention from the issue

Apparently same thing used to happen in 90s. Whenever there was some media coverage and talks regarding Kashmir the MQM mafia would conveniently be involved in unrest in Karachi taking away the spotlight from Kashmir

Absolutely! I don't think even top leadership in Pakistan is involved, many genuinely support Altaf because they believe everything against him is conspiracy by establishment (not that there are none). Farooq Sattar was presented with evidences of MQM guys getting training in India and after denying for months, he finally admitted some people went for training but they didn't seek MQM approval before going (save face statement). I am one of those who hate such labels like ghaddar or RAW/American agent but i have absolutely no doubt Altaf is a RAW agent but not everyone in MQM is aware.

Don't know why these people are behaving like stupid Indians who blames ISI for playing key role behind indigenous kashmir struggle.

I think in his case the evidence only matters if it's in india's favor and some times it doesn't even matters because GOI words are not questionable.

Yet we get called conspiracy theorists if we ever reject Western narratives.

India is a terrorist state, nothing more nothing less.

So what happened here? Why did the Scotland Yard not do anything to any Indian?

The BBC article pretty much mentioned in its first line that this is according to a Pakistani source.

Yet we get called conspiracy theorists if we ever reject Western narratives.

India is a terrorist state, nothing more nothing less.

If only anyone in the world would agree to it.

Yet the likes of OBL,Taliban Chief,UN designated terrorists are all found in Pakistan.Yet it is Pakistan's President who accepts that Pakistan used terrorism againist India. :)

Sad to see few people cling on to the facade of their country being the most angelic and righteous one on the face of the earth.

So, at least we didn't vote a butcher as head of state.

The butcher of Gujarat might have got away with his crimes there or his crimes against Kashmiri civilians but he knows he can't against Pakistan.

Modi was a tea seller of Gujrat. If at all, I am proud to be citizen of a country where a person from modest background can rise to the topmost post.
Most of the butchers in India are Muslims. In fact in Gujrat, Hindus are predominantly vegetarians. So when you say a butcher of Gujrat, it refers to mostly Muslims of Gujrat. Still, if a butcher raises to the top spot, that would only be a victory of the democracy.

Lol this is pretty funny

Dunno whether it matters to anyone but you certainly care

Because every time over the past couple years someone has called him a butcher of Gujarat or sth similar you appear jumping and say 'doesn't matter, doesn't matter.' Like you do it without fail

Pretty hilarious :))

Urdu speakers have made a massive contribution to PK, and if the country is to develop, then they have to be at the front. But why have so many been hijacked by the treacherous MQM? If these criminals want to go back to Ind, then go. No-one is stopping you.

Muhammad Anwar says MQM received funding from India

LONDON: The Muttahida Qaumi Movement’s former head of diplomatic wing and Coordination Committee member Muhammad Anwar alleged that the MQM has been receiving funds from the Indian government and he was asked by the party leadership to coordinate with Indian contacts to receive the funding.

In an exclusive interview with The News and Geo at his home in Edgware, the MQM stalwart denied having anything to do with the murder of Dr Imran Farooq and said that it was Nadeem Nusrat who introduced him to an Indian diplomat in early 90’s. Nusrat, MQM’s former Coordination Committee member, now lives in Washington and runs his own organization.

Speculations have also existed that the MQM received monies from India’s spy agency RAW but this is for the first time that a former senior office-bearer like Anwar has officially accused MQM of being involved with India’s spy agency over a period of time.

Anwar revealed: “It was sometime in the early 90’s when Nadeem Nusrat came to me and told me that he would like me to meet an Indian diplomat. He asked me to meet the Indian diplomat alone but I refused and told him that he should accompany too. It was at 7 o clock in the evening and it was raining heavily that day. Nadeem Nusrat, on my insistence, went with me to the meeting but stood outside the venue.”

Anwar said he told the Indian diplomat that he will discuss issues with him only in the presence of his senior, Nusrat. The Indian diplomat told Anwar he had instructions only to speak to him and not to anyone else. “I told him that I will not speak to him on my own. After making a call to someone and after about half an hour’s argument, he received permission and then Nadeem Nusrat joined us too. This is how I got connected.”

Anwar said that it was never his decision to meet Indian diplomats and deal with them. “I confirm that I was obeying orders of the party. I was asked to do what I did and I was connected by MQM with the Indian contacts. I never had any vested interests. We were towing the party line on India.”'

Anwar lashes out at MQM-Pakistan and UK leaders

Anwar said that his own colleagues in MQM – Pakistan and UK created a bad impression about him, projected him as the only bad person whereas the reality is that each and every person in the leadership position shared responsibilities and all decisions were taken in consultations with each other.

He said that the MQM-Pakistan leaders were projecting themselves today as holier than thou but he said that the Karachi based leadership was responsible for large-scale killings and destructions in the city. “The so-called civilized leaders that you see on TV these days were the ones who were always offering to Altaf Hussain to inform them who to maim, kill and burn. I am ready to share details with authorities about their deeds. Over the years, they have blamed me only to launder themselves as clean guys. That’s not the case.”

Last week, Anwar was named as absconder, with Altaf Hussain and Iftikhar Hussain, in the Dr Imran Farooq murder case by Islamabad’s Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC).

He told this correspondent that the judgment quotes Khalid Shamim as saying that in 2005 he called Dr Imran Farooq from Dublin and spoke to them both over the speaker and in the same conversation, Anwar allegedly asked him to kill the slain MQM leader.

“It’s ridiculous to say that I was planning Doctor Farooq’s killing on his face during a conversation Doctor Farooq was listening to, standing with me. Is this believable? This is a Romeo and Juliet story. This is totally baseless, without any substance.”

Anwar said he has never met Shamim in is life and never had any relation with him of any kind. "How is it possible that I planned the assassination of my senior in his presence, with a stranger on the phone thousands of miles away," he asked.

Anwar asks Ishratul Ibad to be included in Dr Imran Farooq murder investigation

Anwar blamed Governor Ishratul Ibad, the former governor of Sindh, for spinning theories about his role in the killing. Anwar shared that Ibad told him that Britain’s spy agency, MI6, has shared with him two pictures showing Anwar with the two assassins of Dr Farooq.

Anwar said: “I asked Ibad many times to send me pictures but he never did and then I had to take a tough stance. Altaf Hussain asked Tariq Mir to visit Karachi, meet the governor and bring the two pictures. Tariq Mir came back with two tiny photo-shopped pictures made in a studio. I laughed seeing at those pictures.”

Anwar said he had fully cooperated with Scotland Yard in their investigation and the police had never shared with him anything suggesting his link of any kind with the killing. “If there was anything the police would have presented that before me as incriminating evidence but I have seen nothing and the police have mentioned nothing.”

He said that the former Sindh governor should also be made part of the investigation and questions should be asked of him as well about who was providing him false information. He also said that the former Sindh governor should be asked to share what information he had regarding the murder. Anwar said that police had raided his house and took all his belongings including laptops of his college-going children but found nothing. "I am saying unequivocally and vociferously that I am not involved,” he said.

Anwar said that Altaf had suspended Dr Imran Farooq to embarrass and humiliate him. “I respected him a lot. We had disagreements over policy matters and I always stood by merit in the party.”

He said Dr Imran Farooq was consistent in his political beliefs and didn’t like U-turns and policy somersaults made by the party founder.

We are not against Pakistan: Anwar

Anwar said that MQM has never been against Pakistan. Anwar recalled that Field Marshal Ayub Khan gave his father Tamgha-e-Khidmat in 1967 for his services to the state of Pakistan. In 1971, Anwar said, his father in 1971 did food provision work in North Bengal on General Niazi’s request because all provisions were cut off.

He said: “My father was the only person who supplied food without even billing. He was arrested as a war collaborator and languished in jail and suffered inhumane torture. My father-in-law Syed Ahmed Ashraf was campaigning for Pakistan in 1937 with Muhammad Ali Jinnah. He was Secretary General of All India Muslim League. He is buried in Islamia College. We are not and were not against Pakistan. We were not Indian agents. Whatever our relations with India were, we were towing MQM’s party line.”

Anwar said the late Asma Jahangir called MQM’s office on 12 May 2007 and told the London office that MQM people were involved in killing innocent people and pleaded to the party leadership to stop the carnage in Karachi during Pervez Musharraf’s government.

“I, Anees Advocate, Imran Farooq and Tariq Mir were opposed to the violence. I told leadership what would happen to us in international and local opinion but in the end, Karachi leaders prevailed and Altaf didn’t agree with us."

Anwar offered that he would cooperate with the authorities in the UK and Pakistan if needed to establish facts. Anwar has warned that he will be spilling more beans on MQM if anyone tried to malign him.

An individual’s statement is not a proof of anything. People say all sort of things all the time to suit their interest.

Pak army has been horse trading for a long time. Altaf Bhai’s biggest mistake was to get surrounded by these opportunists, selfish individuals and drinking a bit too much. Time for fresh faces and new leadership of MQM

No his biggest problem was that he could not give up the leadership position to someone else. There is no reason MQM could not have internal democracy with term limits for leaders. There could have been a new Bhai or Baji, who hopefully would not have done his antics and embarrassed the party.

As for Altaf Hussain, this is the pic of his house.

Now compare this (and all of his other properties, if there are any) with: Imran Khan’s Bani Galla Mansion, Nawaz Sharif’s Raiwind palace and Zardari’s multiple Bilawal House and the Surrey Palace. Even the 3rd rate Fawad Chaidhry and Sharjeel Memon type ministers live in more luxurious abodes.

Agree but may be there wasnt a proper candidate either or Pak army tried to Out fox him everytime.
I thought he was preparing Mustafa Kamal but he turned out to be a rotten egg. Farooq sattar was bogged down by his greed and Tessori. Ali Raza Abidi was good but he was also killed by the establishment. Amir khan and other are just chumchageer type.

As there is no other party to represent the issues Urdu speaking community and the city of Karachi, i am sure sooner or later some new leadership will emerge amongst the ranks of MQM.

Sad that the traitorous goon on the payroll of RAW still has supporters on the net. This guy deserve to not be in a home but in prison awaiting his execution date.

https://tribune.com.pk/story/2340541/several-injured-arrested-as-police-baton-charge-mqm-p-rally-in-karachi

Several people were injured and many taken into custody on Wednesday after police resorted to baton-charge and shelling on the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) workers protesting against the recently passed amendments to the Sindh Local Government Act of 2013 in Karachi.

According to the MQM-P media cell, the police baton-charged the protesters and fired tear gas to disperse the demonstrators outside the CM House.

It said that many women workers, as well as members of provincial and national assemblies, got injured due to the baton-charge, adding that some members were arrested despite being seriously injured.

Senior leader of MQM-P MNA Kishwar Zahra was also injured in the clash with police and was taken to hospital for treatment, according to the party’s media cell.

Federal Minister for Information, Technology, and Telecommunication and MQM-P spokesperson Syed Aminul Haq said that Commissioner Karachi had contacted them.

He said that many women and children got injured due to the shelling by police on participants of the peaceful sit-in.

Police later cleared the area outside CM House and arrested many protesters including MQM-P workers.

Zahid Mansoori, a member of MQM-Pakistan’s Rabita (coordination) Committee, said that their sit-in was peaceful. “The people have suffered due to traffic jams but we are protesting for them. We will continue our peaceful struggle,” he said.

Earlier, thousands of commuters were stuck on the city's main thoroughfare – Sharae Faisal – after the party activists blocked both sides of the road while protesting against the PPP-led Sindh government.

An hours-long gridlock was reported on the port city's main artery and surrounding areas, with ambulances, commuters and other vehicles at a standstill as protestors marched towards the Karachi Press Club from FTC.

However, the destination was changed by party leaders and the protesters reached Chief Minister House, where a sit-in is now being staged.

Other areas affected by the protest are Saddar, Hotel Metropole, I.I Chundrigar, Press Club road, Kala Pul and airport road.

The logjam also severely disrupted the route taken to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Center (JPMC) by patients and attendees.

Traffic police were unable to resolve the traffic situation and some vehicle owners reportedly ran out of fuel while waiting for the traffic to start moving.

Frustrated citizens said political parties should not protest on the main thoroughfares of the city and urged Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah to take action against such activities.

Citizens asked if the issue of the local body law will be resolved by blocking the city's traffic and said such acts only cause helplessness among the people of the port city.

‘Protest a bid to divert attention from real issues’

Sindh Information Minister Saeed Ghani, while talking to The Express Tribune, the opposition parties, including MQM-P, who are protesting against the local government bill, wanted to divert attention from the real public issues.

"The biggest problems at the moment are the gas crisis, the monthly rise in electricity tariffs, the sharp rise in medicine prices and inflation," he added.

Ghani questioned why the MQM-P did not protest against the federal government on public issues, adding that the issue of the local government bill will be resolved in the provincial assembly, not on the streets.

"It is not right to harass people on the streets... PPP believes in solving problems in a democratic manner."

Ghani said that PPP is not against demonstrations but Pakistan Super League (PSL) is about to begin and there are "security concerns".

"We had asked MQM-P to protest in front of Karachi Press Club but they did not listen... due to security concerns, the administration took action," he added.

Meanwhile, PTI's Parliamentary Leader in Sindh Assembly Khurram Sher Zaman, while condemning the Sindh government, has said that “pro-democratic forces” were being punished for protesting against the local government bill.

He questioned why the police did not use such tactics on criminal elements, adding that the PPP government was using the force for "political hooliganism".

Khurram said “Governor's rule” was the only option left against the behaviour of Sindh government.

Opposition parties in Sindh have been protesting against the new amendments to the local body law for weeks now. Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) has been holding a sit-in in front of the Sindh Assembly for more than 27 days.

In December, the provincial assembly had passed the contentious Sindh Local Government (Amendment) Bill 2021 again, with a few amendments to the original draft. The bill was passed amidst the opposition parties' protest as their members tore apart copies of the agenda and created pandemonium during the assembly session, chaired by Speaker Agha Siraj Durrani.

Federal Planning Minister Asad Umar also took an exception to the use of brute force by the provincial government, saying, “The dictatorial style of government of the PPP in the guise of democracy is highly reprehensible”.

The Constitution of Pakistan, he maintained, gives citizens the right to peaceful protest, adding that the PPP's approach to suppressing dissent through the use of force is shameful.

Later, while addressing an urgently-called press conference, MQM-P Convener Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui announced that the party would observe Thursday as "black day" over the brutal treatment meted out to his party workers today.

He also demanded Prime Minister Imran Khan to get the Sindh IG removed via the provincial government.

Khalid also threatened PPP co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari to tighten " the noose around his chief minister otherwise Bilawal House is also located in this city".

"We do not want to fight, but you know very well that we do know how to fight... it is shameful not to fight if you're honour is at stake," he added.

Khalid said that former Nazim of New Karachi Town lost his eye as a result of police shelling. "The racist chief minister should pray that the city doesn't rise or there could be severe consequences," he warned.

He said that if MQM-P's party workers are not released immediately then "they will be free to make their decisions".

The MQM-P convener also asked the prime minister to visit the city at the earliest. "The IG you have sent is more like a commissioner of Sindhu Desh."

Khalid also demanded Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah’s resignation, “otherwise the city’s doors will be shut for him”. Khalid also urged the students, industrialists and businessmen to raise their voices against the oppression by the provincial government.

Prime Minister Imran Khan on Thursday threatened of action against officials responsible for the 'violence' meted out to Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P)'s protestors outside the Chief Minister House in Karachi.

The premier's statement came a day after several people, including women and children, were injured and many taken into custody after police resorted to baton-charge and shelling on MQM-P workers protesting against the recently passed amendments to the Sindh Local Government Act of 2013.

Taking notice of the incident, Imran added that a report had been sought from the interior ministry, Sindh chief secretary and Sindh inspector general.

Hours after the clash between the protestors and the police, MQM-P Convener Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui had announced that the party will be observing a Black Day on Thursday (today) over the brutal treatment meted out to his party workers.

A senior member of MQM-P North Karachi UC-5 joint organizer Aslam Bhai, who was injured in Wednesday’s protest, succumbed to his injuries during treatment at Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre late on Wednesday evening, the MQM-P spokesman said.

Addressing the media outside the Karachi Press Cub, Siddiqui said there were reports that a year-old baby who was in his mother’s lap, died from being hit by a tear gas shell, “we pray that this news is wrong,” he said, adding that “a white double-cabin SUV was seen hauling away three of our workers Rana Ansar, Zahida and Rabia; if they are not released by night, the police station concerned will be held responsible.”

He also demanded Prime Minister Imran Khan to get the Sindh IG removed via the provincial government, “or we will surround the CM House.”

Last month, provincial lawmakers of PTI and MQM-P, led by leader of the opposition in Sindh Assembly Haleem Adil Sheikh, marched in a rally from the assembly building to the Supreme Court Karachi registry. The aim was to hold a peaceful demonstration to draw the attention of the apex court towards the alleged violation of fundamental human rights and the contravention to constitutional provisions.

They requested the chief justice of Pakistan to take up constitutional petitions against the Sindh Local government Act 2013. The petitions were filed separately by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf and Muttehda Qaumi Movement-Pakistan.

PTI Parliamentary leader in Sindh Assembly Bilal Abdul Gaffar, MQM-P parliamentary leader Kunwar Naveed Jamil, Muhammad Hussain and other members of the provincial assembly were holding banners and placards with slogans against the SLGA 2013.

Sindh Information Minister Saeed Ghani on Thursday contested Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan's (MQM-P) claim that its party worker's death in Karachi a day earlier was due to police violence, saying that the actual cause of death "seems to be a heart attack".

Several MQM-P workers, including women, were injured when police fired tear gas and resorted to baton-charge on their sit-in outside Chief Minister House against the recently passed controversial local government law on Wednesday evening.

Three persons, including MQM-P MPA Sadaqat Husain and a policeman, were brought to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) for treatment. The MQM-P had said that Aslam died during treatment at the hospital — a claim Ghani appeared to reject in a press conference today.

"From the information apparently in front of us and the documents with us, it seems he (Aslam) died due to a heart attack and not violence. He was taken to Karachi Institute of Heart Disease and then he was brought here to National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases," the provincial information minister said recalling yesterday's events.

"We got it investigated [and] no person came in an injured state in Jinnah hospital or any other big government hospital ... no patient by the name of Aslam sahab came to Jinnah hospital and no death occurred."

Ghani said further investigation found that Aslam had arrived at KIHD at 8:30pm, where he was treated and subsequently referred to NICVD. Aslam was brought to NICVD at 10:30pm, by which time he had already passed away, the minister added.

Ghani said that had police violence been the cause of the worker's death, he would have been rushed to the myriad of hospitals nearby and not KIHD, which he said was 15 to 16km away from the site of sit-in.

"We are sad that a person died due to any reason — be it illness or any reason — but there is no evidence according to the information that we have till now that he died due to violence," the PPP official said.

Ghani said that pinning the blame of the death on the police was a "very serious allegation" and requested the deceased's family to allow a post-mortem investigation to bring the facts to light.

"If he really lost his life due to violence in yesterday's incident then we can take action against those responsible," he offered.

It is pertinent to mention here that MQM-P Senator Faisal Subzwari had on Wednesday night said that Aslam was injured by police shelling and baton charge, adding that he passed away at JPMC.

Responding to him, Karachi Administrator Murtaza Wahab said he was saddened to hear of the loss but no one by the deceased's name was brought to JPMC.

Subzwari hit back at the administrator and shared hospital receipts and a report. He acknowledged that the hospital in question was NICVD and not JPMC but reiterated that the worker was indeed "killed".

'These things shouldn't have happened'
Ghani acknowledged that yesterday's events "shouldn't have happened", adding that the city administration did not want to take any action but was forced to do so due to Pakistan Super League teams staying at a hotel nearby and the prevailing security situation.

"Despite not wanting to, the administration took this action and tried that no loss was incurred and the people were dispersed."

Ghani laid into the MQM-P's leadership and claimed that the party's MPA Sadaqat Husain, who was injured in the protest, was involved in committing violence against on-duty police officers.

"This perception is wrong that an MPA was beaten and dragged."

He also rubbished reports of a minor being killed and said that contrary to reports of "many workers and women" being arrested, around six to eight people were taken in police custody but were later released on the chief minister's instructions.

Ghani said the statements from the MQM-P leaders were attempting to instigate ethnic violence and called upon them to discuss their reservations on the local government law as well as the issue of the death of their activist in Tando Allahyar.

He also criticised the response from federal ministers over the incident, claiming the steps taken by the administration were to "protect Pakistan's name and better Pakistan's image in the world" so the PSL could continue.

Shortly after Ghani's presser, Prime Minister Imran Khan said he had taken note of the violence used by the Sindh police against MQM-P's "peaceful protest" and has called for a report about the matter.

"Will take necessary action against those responsible after receiving these reports," he tweeted.

CM Shah calls Aminul Haque
Meanwhile, Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah called MQM-P leader and Federal Minister for IT and Telecommunication Syed Aminul Haque today to express his sadness over Wednesday's events.

"Such incidents should not happen under any circumstances," he said and the two agreed that political differences should be resolved through talks.

They also agreed to not give the incident an ethnic colour and condemned statements uttered along those lines. The two also consulted on carrying out a post-mortem investigation if anyone was killed in the violence and agreed to not create such a situation in the future.

CM Shah assured that he would get an inquiry carried out and action would be taken against those found responsible. He also offered to discuss the local government law.

Haque expressed confidence in the steps taken by the government on the Tando Allahyar incident with the chief minister.

The chief minister also called MPA Husain and inquired about his health.

FM Qureshi condemns incident
Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi, in a phone call today with Haque and MQM-P MNAs Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui and Kishwar Zehra, strongly condemned Wednesday's events.

He said dispersing the peaceful protest through the use of force was a "denial of democratic rights". FM Qureshi also condoled Aslam's death and injury received by another MQM-P worker.

The foreign minister criticised the alleged thrashings meted out to women and MPA Husain. He added that the events had exposed the "real face" of those who gave lectures every day on democracy.

He said Sindh's local government law had been rejected by all parties and reduced to a "joke" among the people. Qureshi called for an immediate change in the local government law.
