Pakistan's President Asif Ali Zardari was admitted to a private hospital in Karachi late Monday night after his health took a turn for the worse, local sources reported.

The 69-year-old leader, a prominent figure in the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), is currently under medical care, with doctors performing tests to determine the nature of his condition. No official update on his health has been provided as of yet.

PPP officials confirmed the hospitalization but offered few details, leaving the public awaiting further clarification. In response, authorities have ramped up security around the facility, deploying law enforcement to safeguard the president and restricting access to authorized personnel only.

The incident follows Zardari's public appearance on Sunday, when he joined Eid-ul-Fitr prayers at Zardari House in Nawabshah. He was seen alongside key figures, including Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly Ghulam Mustafa Shah, Provincial Minister Ali Hassan, and Zia Lanjar, amid a large gathering of supporters.

Zardari's health has been a recurring concern in recent years. In 2024, he fractured his foot while exiting a plane in Dubai during a private trip, requiring immediate medical attention and a four-week recovery period that forced the postponement of a planned state visit to China.

As news of his hospitalization spreads, the nation watches closely for updates on the president's condition, with official statements expected to shed light on the situation in the coming hours. (ILKHA)

PPP’s Sharjeel Inam refutes reports of President Zardari being shifted to Dubai for medical treatment

Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon on Wednesday said President Asif Ali Zardari’s health was improving and refuted reports of him being shifted to Dubai for medical treatment.

The clarification comes after media outlets, quoting sources, had reported yesterday that President Zardari had been hospitalised in Karachi after being brought over from Nawabshah, where he had offered Eidul Fitr prayers.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had also contacted the president to enquire about his health and wish him a speedy recovery.

“The reports about President Asif Ali Zardari being shifted to Dubai for treatment is inaccurate,” Memon wrote on X in the wee hours of Wednesday, sharing a collage of sources-based media reports.

The minister, a key leader of Zardari’s PPP, said the president’s health was “improving and Inshallah (God-willingly), he will be fine very soon”.

PPP Senator Sehar Kamran, in a post on X, also wished the president “good health and a swift recovery”.

“May Allah Almighty grant him a long, happy, and fulfilling life. President Zardari is an icon of national unity, his resilience continues to inspire us all,” she wrote.

When reached out for a comment, a source close to the party had told Dawn.com that he was “undergoing some tests and would be discharged soon”.

A statement from the office of Sindh Governor Kamran Tessori said he called the president’s physician Dr Asim Hussain and asked about Zardari’s health while expressing his well wishes.

At 69 years of age, President Zardari has had multiple health issues in recent years.

The president had fractured his foot while deboarding an airplane in October 2024. Following the fall, he was immediately taken to a hospital for treatment. After a check-up, the doctor placed his foot in a cast.

In March 2023, he underwent an eye surgery in the United Arab Emirates.

He tested positive for Covid-19 in July 2022 but only experienced “mild symptoms”, according to his son and PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari.

Later that year, he was admitted to Karachi’s Dr Ziauddin Hospital for one week for treatment of a chest infection. Amid rumours of ill health, his personal physician and close aide Dr Asim had confirmed that he was “in good health”.

A year prior to that, Zardari was admitted to a private hospital in Karachi due to “exertion and exhaustion” caused by his frequent travelling.

Zardari is one of the most important members of the establishment. He is able to control and keep peace in Sindh and the upper and lower house is also controlled by him aswell.

If he dies and there is no one to control sindh and the houses, there is gonna be a new chaos.

President Asif Ali Zardari has tested positive for Covid-19, according to a statement issued by the President House on Wednesday

The statement confirmed that President Zardari's personal physician, Dr Asim Hussain, conducted a series of tests, which confirmed the diagnosis. Dr Hussain added that President Zardari has been advised to remain in isolation.

“The medical team is ensuring round-the-clock observation to manage his condition effectively,” Zardari's physician was quoted as saying. Zardari had been shifted from Nawabshah to a private hospital in Karachi after reporting health issues.

Moreover, President Asif Ali Zardari will not be attending the rally scheduled for April 4, according to sources. The sources also revealed that the president has been advised to take continuous rest due to health reasons

In a separate statement today, Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Memon dismissed reports claiming the president was being flown to Dubai for treatment. Memon said the president’s health was improving and that he would soon recover completely.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also spoke to Zardari via phone, enquiring about his health and extending prayers for his recovery. Sindh Governor Kamran Tessori contacted Dr Hussain as well, expressing concern and offering best wishes for the president’s health.

Sindh Minister Sharjeel Memon has claimed that President Zardari's health is improving, and that the news of him being shifted to Dubai for treatment is baseless.

"The reports about President Asif Ali Zardari being shifted to Dubai for treatment is inaccurate. His health is improving and Inshallah he will be fine very soon," the provincial minister posted on his official X account.

Early on Tuesday morning, President Asif Ali Zardari's health deteriorated suddenly, which prompted his admission to a private hospital in Clifton, Karachi.

Karachi police have filed a First Information Report (FIR) against one of their officers, Station Investigation Officer (SIO) Abrar Shah, after he allegedly posted an obscene comment about President Asif Ali Zardari on social media

The incident occurred on April 2, 2025, when Shah shared derogatory remarks regarding the ailing president, which led to a complaint filed by duty officer Yaqoob from the Sukkun police station.

The FIR was registered under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act 2016 (PECA), which addresses cybercrimes.

The complainant has provided the police with screenshots of the offensive post.

As a result, SIO Abrar Shah was arrested by the Sukkun police, and the case has been transferred to the Investigation Officer (IO) for further action.

Earlier, Authorities have registered three additional cases under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) 2025 for allegedly spreading propaganda against Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz and state institutions on social media.

The cases were filed at Shahdara, Shahdara Town, and Kot Lakhpat police stations, involving serious charges related to digital offences under PECA 2025.

The First Information Reports (FIRs) allege that artificial intelligence (AI) was used to create manipulated videos targeting the Punjab CM.

Police claim these videos were part of a coordinated effort by a political group to promote an anti-state narrative and incite unrest on online platforms.
