Tests
1. Best bowler - James Anderson (Pace) and Nathan Lyon (Spin)

This is a very tricky choice. I am going to name the best Spin bowler and Best pace bowler in tests. Nathan Lyon deserves to be called the best spin bowler of the year. Kagiso Rabada has 57 wickets at 23 and James Anderson has 54 wickets at 17. For me the veteran slightly edges out Rabada based on his performance this year and also his performances in the ongoing Ashes.

2. Best batsman - Steven Smith

No doubts about this choice. Pujara, Dean Elgar and Virat Kohli have also scored 1000+ runs at a good average but Smith stands head and shoulders about all for me.

ODI

1. Best bowler - Hasan Ali

Again no doubt about this choice. Hasan Ali has been brilliant this year with the ball in ODI's. Rashid Khan, J Bumrah, Plunkett all have had a great year but Hasan has been brilliant.

2. Best batsman - V Kohli

3 batsmen crossed 1000 runs this year but none of them scored higher than the Indian captain. Rohit Sharma has been brilliant with the bat in 2017. He also had his 3rd double hundred this year. Upul Tharanga has been good for Sri Lanka as well. Ross Taylor, Joe Root have all done brilliantly but you cannot ignore an average of 76.8 with a SR of 99 and over 1400 runs. So Virat for me is the best ODI player.

T20I

1. Best bowler - Rashid Khan

Here there were only two choices for me. One for YS Chahal from India who took the highest number of wickets in this format and the other was Rashid Khan. I chose Rashid because the young spinner has been brilliant this year. Watching him bowl in BBL is such a joy and the young spinner just trumps the Indian as the best T20 bowler.

2. Best batsman - E Lewis

Here again there were only two choices for me. AB De Villiers and E Lewis. I have gone for the west Indian. An average of 44 with the bat and a SR of 154, I feel we will hear more about this youngster in the next few years. ABD has had a brilliant year in the T20I and gets a honourable mention.

Best Captain

1. Test - V Kohli

There aren't many contenders for this spot. India have had a great year in tests. Granted that they have played mostly at home but Virat's team has just lost 1 test this year.

2. ODI - Sarfaraz Ahmed

Even though India and England have better W/L records this year ahead of Pakistan, I am going for Sarfaraz for rallying his team team through the tough Champions Trophy.

3. T20I - Sarfaraz Ahmed

V Kohli has had a good year in this format as well but again, I will go with Sarafraz as Pakistan has better W/L ratio in this format. It is hard to judge T20I as it is largely inconclusive. Afghanistan has a 2.33 W/L ratio this year.

For your ODI captain, I know you have selected Sarfraz but he rightfully deserves it any way, as you are comparing the whole year win/lose records of every team it has brought 4 losses against Australia in the records (Sarfraz was not part of this tour). He first captained against West Indies in April and since then has lost only 2 matches with a Win/Loss ratio of 6.00 better than any other team.

Overall, you have selected everyone that I would choose too.

You know what, Morne Morkel arguably deserves Test bowler of the year; his numbers don't do his impact justice.

Superb post!!

How about innings of the year?

Most people will agree on who the best players are. Smith, Kohli and Rabada are well ahead of their kind in different formats.

I'd be surprised if anyone thinks Smith isn't the batsman of the year.

The best innings imo was played by Shai Hope. Smith in this Ashes is still playing at home. Hope was playing Anderson and co in home conditions.

Obviously, Smith is in orbit to all time greatness and no one has come close.

Tests
1. Best bowler - Nathan Lyon
He took 63 wickets. His 8-50 Vs India to skittle them for 189 all out on the first day of the test match, in their home territory was his best performance of the the year.

2. Best batsman - SPD SMith
Virat Kohli and SMith have similar averages, Kohli has a better strike rate, but Smith becomes the undisputed champion bat of the year by virtue of his 3 hundreds in India (away conditions).

ODI
1. Best bowler - Hasan Ali.
Rashid Khan had a phenomenal year. Statistically he was the best bowler of the year, but Hasan Ali wins it comfortably as his 45 wickets came at the highest stages against quality opposition. A very good prospect for pakistan and a potential ATG if he continues in the same manner.

2. Best batsman : Rohit Sharma
It finally comes down to Rohit Sharma Vs Virat Kohli. I would normally choose Virat, But scoring a 3rd double hundred is a phenomenal achievement, and scoring it as a captain gives him one bonus point, which pips him just ahead of Virat in my opinion.

T20I
1. Best bowler Y.S.Chahal
Statistically the best bowler of the year.

2. Best batsman E Lewis.
Statistically the best of the year.

Best Captain
1. Test - Virat Kohli (statistically)
2. ODI - Sarfaraz Ahmed (Won champions trophy, which no one thought possible)
3. T20I - Sarfaraz Ahmed (Just lost 2 games ll year)

What about Smith's innings in India?

Smith's innings is probably the best I saw by an Australian [highlights] since Ricky Ponting's hundred on a minefield in Fatullah '06 [not highlights].

However, I just love the WI, and I think it was the unlikeliest win by any team since Calcutta. There have been some others, but those teams weren't second-tier Test teams like the WI.

The Best of 2017

I did a search and found PP did not have a thread on the best cricket teams and players of 2017. So I thought, let's start a thread on that. People can post their best players across categories and best teams across formats, but the difference is that it should be an annual list, rather than based on the odd time frame of the ICC awards. Cricket does not have an established season, so I've never liked the arbitrary time frame for the ICC.

Here goes:

Best Test Batsman - Steven Smith Aus

Best Test Bowler - Nathan Lyon Aus

Best Test All Rounder - Shakib Al Hasan Bang

Runners up would be Pujara, Rabada and Ali (had to give it to Shakib because he batted better, although missing the SA series was a cowardly move).

Test XI -
1. Warner Aus
2. Elgar SA
3. Pujara Ind
4. Kohli Ind
5. Smith c Aus
6. Bairstow wk Eng
7. Al Hasan Bang
8. Lyon Aus
9. Rabada SA
10. Hazlewood Aus
11. Anderson Eng

Best ODI Batsman - Joe Root

Best ODI Bowler - Hasan Ali

Best ODI All Rounder - Hardik Pandya

Runners up are Kohli, Hazlewood and Stokes, with Kohli and Stokes missing out on slight margins, largely due to looking terrified in crunch matches. Kohli in the CT final and Stokes in the semi, who looked like he was batting in a test match from 1902.

ODI XI-
1. Sharma Ind
2. QDK wk SA
3. Williamson c NZ
4. Root Eng
5. Kohli Ind
6. Azam Pak
7. Pandya Ind
8. Stokes Eng
9. Rashid Eng
10. Hasan Pak
11. Hazlewood Aus

This side needs a 12th man and that would be Boult, could even have Plunkett.
