Didn't have the pleasure of watching either of them bowl, but will go with Joel Garner due to the devastating reputation his yorkers had. Has a 5-fer in a World Cup final against England, of which 4 were bowled (including Gooch and Gower).

Garner. Irfan despite being a little taller and despite being hyped so much for his height couldn't do half of what Garner did. Had he some of the skills Garner had, height aside, he could've been lethal.

Will refrain from voting on this one. Haven't seen either of them at length to come to an apt conclusion.

Pretty sure Garner is one of the greatest in ODIs and Holding is better in tests, from whatever I have read..

Michael Holding aka 'whispering death'

Holding instilled fear in batsmen (genuine fear of getting hurt). He was devastating and lethal, he wins this one for me.

Garner. He is arguably the GOAT ODI bowler. His economy is insane, even considering his era.

Garner was very hard to score runs off. His height meant he always generated real bounce off a good length. Developed a killer yorker. One of the best ODI bowlers.

A lot of the people here haven't seen any of them bowl (not much on YouTube either me thinks), so not sure how people can be so 'certain' that one is better than the other.

What I've read is both were great. Holding instilled much more fear in the batsmen, he was faster, intimidating and effective.

Though Garner wasn't behind either, so I won't be choosing the 'better' one here as I'm not sure.

Greg Chappell knows what happens when you make Garner angry!

Wow...what a way to work out a batsmen.

Many of the balls weren't bouncers too. Just back of length deliveries rising sharply and hitting rib cage.

It really saddens me to see the current state of fast bowling. The bowlers from 80s and 90s would have still done better in this batting friendly era because they were just too good.

Yes but they would also be pounded badly barring a few.

Pattas can make anyone look like lulloos.

Starc was incredible on even pattas in 2015 WC. He is the only bowler right now who reminds me of bowlers from the past.

Starc was having the best form of his life in the 2015 WC. He is still bowling 150km/hr+ nowadays but getting tonked every other match. Today's batsmen have become far too good on flat pitches, they will take risk from ball 1 and succeed more often than not. You could have respectable bowling average for sure, but economy rate would be destroyed if 80s quicks played today.

Saw both. Michael Holding was superior (all round) for me. He was the Rolls Royce of fast bowlers.
