A man has died and two others, including a British man, have been injured in a knife and hammer attack on a street in central Paris.

The attack occurred near the Eiffel Tower shortly before 21:00 local time (20:00 GMT) on Saturday.

A 26-year-old French national known to security services has been arrested and anti-terrorism prosecutors have opened an investigation.

The man killed was a German tourist who worked as a nurse.

France's Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin said the victim was with his wife when he was attacked and fatally stabbed on Quai de Grenelle.

He said the wife's life was saved by the intervention of a taxi driver and that the suspect fled across a nearby bridge spanning the River Seine.

After crossing to the north side of the river he attacked two more people, hitting the 66-year-old British victim in the eye with a hammer.

The suspect was then Tasered by police and arrested on suspicion of assassination - defined in French law as premeditated murder - and "attempted assassination in relation to a terrorist enterprise".

Video published online appeared to show the moment the suspect was apprehended by armed police not far from where the attack happened.

He has been named in French media as Armand R, a 26-year-old French national with Iranian parents.

The two people injured - a Frenchman aged around 60 and a British tourist - were treated by emergency services, with neither found to be in a life-threatening condition.

On Sunday, Health Minister Aurélien Rousseau told French media the pair are "in good health".

A police operation was initiated around the Bir-Hakeim metro station on Saturday night, and authorities urged people to avoid the area.

Mr Darmanin said the alleged attacker was heard shouting "Allahu Akbar", Arabic for "God is greatest", and told police he was upset because "so many Muslims are dying in Afghanistan and in Palestine".

The suspect is also understood to have suggested France was complicit in the deaths of Palestinians in Gaza.

Police said the man was released from prison in 2020 after serving four years for planning an attack, and was supposed to be following treatment for psychiatric problems.

On Saturday, a video was posted on social media in which the suspect criticised the French government and discussed what he described as the murder of innocent Muslims, AFP news agency reports.

Writing on X, formerly Twitter, French President Emmanuel Macron sent his thoughts to all those affected by the "terrorist attack" and thanked the emergency services for their response.

"The national anti-terrorist prosecutor's office will now be responsible for shedding light on this affair so that justice can be done in the name of the French people," he said.

It comes less than two months after a teacher was killed in a knife attack at a high school in the northern city of Arras, prompting the French government to put the country on its highest level of national security alert.

Alleged killer of tourist in Paris attack had pledged allegiance to Islamic State
Suspect detained after German-Filipino man killed and two – one British and one French – injured near Eiffel Tower

A 26-year-old man suspected of killing a German-Filipino tourist and wounding two others near the Eiffel Tower in Paris on Saturday night had pledged allegiance to the Islamic State in a video released online.

The French anti-terrorism prosecutor, Jean-François Ricard, said the French suspect, named as Armand Rajabpour-Miyandoab, “had recorded a video before committing the act”, in which he spoke in Arabic, swore allegiance to Islamic State and supported its jihadists in different areas from Africa to Iraq, Syria and Pakistan.

The video was posted online on his account on the social network X, which also showed numerous posts on Hamas, Gaza and Palestine. The account was started at the beginning of October.

The suspect was still being questioned by police on Sunday night after he is alleged to have stabbed the German-Filipino tourist to death and wounded two others – one British, one French.

Rajabpour-Miyandoab, who had served four years in prison for planning a radical Islamist attack before being released in 2020, had been monitored by the intelligence services for “persistent radicalisation”, Ricard said, and had undergone psychiatric treatment.

Born in 1997 in the affluent town of Neuilly-sur-Seine, west of Paris, Rajabpour-Miyandoab was born to parents of Iranian origin, in a family described by the prosecutor as having “no religious engagement”. He converted to Islam aged 18 in 2015 and very quickly fell into “jihadist ideology, consulting videos and propaganda and making links to jihadists active in Iraq and Syria”, the prosecutor said.

At the end of October this year, his mother had said she was concerned by his behaviour as he was “closed in on himself”.

The attack took place about 9.30pm near the Bir Hakeim bridge in an area popular with tourists. France is on its highest alert for attacks against the background of the war between Israel and Hamas.

Paris attack: Mother of suspect had 'reported concerns', prosecutor says

The mother of a man suspected of stabbing a German tourist to death near the Eiffel Tower in Paris reported concerns about her son weeks before the attack, a prosecutor has said.

Two others, including a British man, were injured in the attack on Saturday.

A 26-year-old French man was later arrested, and anti-terrorism prosecutors opened an investigation.

France's interior minister said there was a "failure" in the alleged attacker's psychiatric treatment.

Gérald Darmanin told BFM TV that the attacker had an "acute mental illness", adding that "doctors said on several occasions that he was doing better, was more normal and could be free".

Prosecutor Jean-François Ricard said the suspect had pledged allegiance to the Islamic State group (IS).

Armand R, a French national born in France to Iranian parents, converted to Islam aged 18, the prosecutor said. He was imprisoned in 2016 for four years after making plans to travel to Syria to join IS.

Mr Ricard said that the suspect had been under surveillance for suspected extremism and that three people, including members of his family, had been detained for questioning.

He told reporters that the alleged attacker's mother "reported concerns about her son's behaviour" in late October "as he had turned in on himself".

However, there was not enough information to allow for a new prosecution, he added.

Police said the suspect was supposed to be following treatment for psychiatric problems.

The guy had psychiatric issues. The question is why wasn't he locked up.

We know for decades now, western intelligence agencies often set up such people with mental issues in order to carry out attacks, as this helps their propaganda.

Sadly you will see many more of these while Israel is massacring people and losing support. This helps Israel the most, always has.

So according to you Mossad, CIA has set this guy up to attack Westerners in Paris.

There should be a limit for delusions.
