I believe this guy has some influence in the board otherwise why'd he be in the current eleven opening the innings ?

The guy can't field/run for his life, throws lollipops, an avg batter/keeper !

If this isn't a true reflection of quota system then what is ?

There are better WK in IND like Uthappa who need a chance to prove their worth !

I dont understand why ur selectors don't consider Robin Uthapa and giving chances to this joker parthiv again n again...

Seriously this clown is indian version of Imran Farhat

Agree for an Indian batsmen/keeper he is extremely poor. I am so sure India has more options than this. This guy hasn't got a list-a century never mind a ODI century.

Pathetic keeper. Average batsmen.

Uthappa or DK should have been chosen instead of PP.

PP never makes use of his starts. Looks good for a bit then lets it go, a bit like Hafeez but Hafeez is MUUUUUCH better :)

Look at the options we have
1.Dinesh Kartik
2.Naman Ojha
3.Sreevats Goswami
4.Wriddhiman Saha
All are good batsmen(well atleast on indian pitches). What the heck does selectors see in baby face patel

Till dhoni captain of india and has some power in board, no keeper batsman will be selected who will be danger for his spot in future in case thing goes bad for him in future. so the moral of story is only avg wicket keeper batsman will be selected.

either robin uttappa or ambati rayudu should have been selected instead of this joker! but he gets unbelievable support from the selection panel. which I never understand...

Parthiv is better than Saha as a batsman. Not sure about keeping skills.

Why not select Rishab Panth if Saha is injured?

How is his form in the domestics?

Would you believe it, he made his debut in 2002 against England when none of the players in the present English team were playing. And he's still only 31:))

I know it's highly unrealistic, but would have liked Pant to make his debut.:srini

Experience perhaps, though if anyone remembers the 2004 Aus tour to India PP is definitely not the one you'd want when an important series is on the line.

Wow, what a silly decision with the series on the line.

Below average batsman who cannot even keep properly. It was the perfect moment to blood Pant.

Both Parthiv and Karthik are terrible keepers. They are supposedly better batsmen than Saha but the Test and First Class records of all 3 are virtually identical. Would have preferred Naman Ojha but he seems to be coming back from injury. Too early to blood Pant. The guy has only played a handful of 4-day matches and may not be able to withstand the rigors of a high-pressure, closely fought Test series like this. All the posters gunning for Pant will summarily dismiss him if he drops a couple of catches and gets cleaned up by Anderson. A dead-rubber against Australia would be a good time to get him in.

Parthiv use to be a terrible keeper. Don't know much he has improved now. Pant should have selected instead.
Saha should return in Fourth Test.
BCCI said: "As a precautionary measure, Saha has been advised rest and will not play in the next Test match of the series. Parthiv Patel will replace Saha in the Indian team for the third Test." The match is set to be played from November 26 in Mohali.

Saha has a far better List A record and has proven to be a tough nut to crack i many a difficult situations, he can surely improve more, ATM Saha is ages ahead of the two and also Ojha. However Saha has potential to average 40+ in tests and he hasn't done justice except those match saving contributions in few tests

If Pathiv is that terrible as a keeper, then just have Rahul keep the wickets and have Nair open with Vijay. This will improve our batting without dropping any bowler. A win - win situation for India.

Rahul is already uncertain with his batting, asking to keep (that too in tests) is too much! Openers are already struggling/inconsistent (including Vijay) that too on Indian Pitches, then you want to ask one more newcomer to open? I think selectors/management have done a fair job! Parthiv cannot do worse than Saha (let's only hope that he keeps properly). And he is the only other left-hander in the lineup apart from Jadeja.

Panth has to be seen till 2017 IPL. Probably better to groom his with international T20s and ODIs before putting him straight into tests! (If Dhoni is blocking, let him play the odd series when Dhoni rests. At least 2 such series after that he can be tried in Tests)

Rahul is struggling. Just have him come at No.6 position against the old ball.

So you want Pant to wait until 2018? Amazing.

Dhoni will play until 2019 or 2020. He is not going to leave. So having Pant play LOI first before Tests is a pipe dream. MSD will not want Pant anywhere close to ODI team.

India should persist with Pant even if he fails in the first few Tests. He is the future.

I am not against Parthiv. But as posters are saying he is a terrible keeper, then why not have Pant? Pant is a superior batsman than Parthiv any day. Keeping skills wise, both Pant and Parthiv may be at the same level.

PS - Dhoni will play every friggin LOI series. He is very fit and has quit Tests. He will not give up his place for a guy like Pant.

2012 to 2014 I wasn't following cricket much at all

So I'm kinda confused as to how this situation came up where Parthia Patel was the keeper resulting in this thread?

If I have my timing right India were touring Aus and wasn't Dhoni captaining?

Parthiv made debut prior to Dhoni I guess (very young age like Sachin!)

Who is the alternate opener then? Dhawan? Rahul should be persisted at opener spot (if ever you want him to be part of the team). Also it is time the same thing is done in LOIs (We don't want two rabbits - Rohit & Dhawan opening in LOIs. There should be some solidity. I felt Dhawan will be that solid player. But he didn't go either Sehwag or Ganguly/Gambhir ways!) If Rahul is needed to keep wickets then he should be consulted & discussed personally by proper specialists (if he has that in him & if he can be made out that way!) I have no objections of Rahul keeping the wickets provided it doesn't cost India the runs & wickets and eventually that disturbing his batting (not fitness & concentration wise but the guilt of not doing well in the fielding department) But more than anything we need Rahul as a solid opener.

And Pant getting into Test Side first may well disturb his batting. But if he takes it positively, shows maturity & makes it big, it can eventually knock the doors in LOIs as well. Let's hope! Dhoni cannot rest back and take it for granted if his performance comes down and somebody else is making noise. Even if selectors and management are biased, media & fans are not going to keep quite! But just that I felt Test Matches are too demanding (especially if he is put into play overseas in tough conditions with the pressure of international cricket! Because usually new players will be selected for overseas tours when there is room for selecting more number of players with many substitutes)

Rested.... Hmm. Saha s time is running out.

On the contrary, picking Parthiv shows that they want Saha long term. If they wanted to replace Saha they had much better options

no. i know that

if im not wrong he was india's first choice keeper in 2004 tour to Pak

but how come he made a return to the team in 2011/12

I don't know what selectors see in Saha.

Saha is another Mongia. Average with bat and above average with gloves. Against good bowling units, Saha is a walking wicket. He was lucky that since Dhoni retired, he got to play against 2 mediocre Test teams in Lanka, West Indies where he scored runs against pathetic bowling units. SA series was a low scoring one. NZ was another struggling team.
Just wait to see how terrible he is with the bat when we your SA/Aus next time. He will not last more than 5 balls against the likes of Starc and Haze and philander and Steyn.

Kumble confirms that Parthiv got selected ahead of Pant and Karthik because of his glovework despite the latter two in better form with the bat this season.

Good to hear that Pant is among the plans for the selectors and coaches.

At this rate Pant will not see Indian colors for another 2 years if Glove Work was the reason.

Saha will be in Test team for another 2 years and MSd in LOI team for another 2 years.

Well he and Kaif was the most consistent player that series I guess. (Sehwag also). Have some crucial partnership down the order. Scored two three fifties too.

Seems he made a comeback in 2011, playing some matches as a specialist batsman and some as a WK.

The last time I remember him playing was back in 2010-11 against SA in SA. That was in the final and deciding ODI of the series, which we lost because of top order collapse. If my memory is right, he scored 38 at a good rate. Later on, Yusuf played a blinder, but couldn't get the team to victory as it was too much to expect from one guy.

dhoni was playign as specialist batsman?

No, Pathriv played as a specialist batsman. He was there as backup for Dhoni. I think he played in only the final ODI; replaced Sachin, who was injured.

A decent comeback for Patel with the bat. His glove work is still questionable though.

So many headaches about Wicket-keeping! So many discussions that somebody is good with bat, some is average with gloves, drop chances, inconsistent, etc, etc!

Do we seriously have Dhoni in mind (or Kiran more? Nayan Mongia?) If Pant is given the chance and if he is found not up there, then what is the solution?

I guess similar crisis will occur if Dhoni opts out of LOIs as well! Parthiv or Pant or anybody may act like flash in the pan (score some fast 30s/40s in some matches and get out cheaply in most occasions! And more importantly they will be way-way below par compared to Dhoni's glove-work in ODIs! You will miss those sharp stumpings, sharp catches and of course some sensible batting even though it has become rare now! Still wonder Dhoni is considered selfish and shielding someone's spot!)

Moral of the story: Blood Pant or any other promising guy in the fill-in matches! Those Zimbabwe, Bangladesh kind of tours or some inconsequential tours where people like Dhoni opts out! Still this is a good chance of testing your talent as you are playing against good international crickets even though they are lesser teams and also you get that chance to share the dressing room with some seniors! IPL or other domestic cricket is not at all the yard-stick no matter however competitive it is, there is no such seriousness there!

Build out from there... Then your place will be cemented! I am sure this is how Kohli, Dhoni, Sachin, etc, built their career! They straight away didn't get that magical spot reserved in the team as soon as they had that potential and made their debut! So blooding Pant or someone in a high-voltage India vs England test series is not the right way (Indians are under the pressure of restoring their previous loss against England at home! So there is no place for complacency) Moreover there is a chance of demoralizing a young talent! So Indian management took the safer option of bringing back Parthiv Patel and we saw it paid off a bit of its purpose! Everyone agrees that Parthiv is not the long term option, but we have to live for the moment and start and build a process...

I am sure Dhoni will happily quit all forms of international cricket if he sees a proper talent in the wings! IPL is enough to maintain his name, fame & money! I am sure Dhoni has one spot reserved in IPL at least! I don't think Indian Wicket-keeping/batting pool is so rich to keep him out!

Hopefully Parthiv plays in next Test even if Saha is fit. Saha is a walking wicket against Rashid.

I like Parhiv's attitude, he might look short and timid but he is a fighter. Likes scoring runs in boundaries (at a fast rate) and his technique is not bad either unlike Dhawan. And because of his good technique he can also play normally. A much better batsman than one dimensional Saha.
IDK much about his keeping but even a brick can do a better job than Saha behind the wickets.

Excellent bat but a scary WK to have.

This guy has the ability to singlehandedly lose games for us.

Wasn't he the one who cost us a series win in Aus in 2004?

Patel will definitely play the next match. He made most of one chance he got. More than 100 run average and some good catches and stumping behind the stumps. He dropped some catches too ...... but who hasn't ?? Was fun to see him go after the English bowlers in the 2nd Innings. So Dhoni might relax now.

Parthiv dropped only one catch. Not that bad.

I saw Parthiv dive and save runs on Day-1 when Shami and Yadav were bowling some leg side tripe.

Partiv also had some good stumpings and catches. His keeping is decent like Bairstow's keeping.

I will take Parthiv any day over that overrated Saha.

Considering Vijay is struggling ,Parthiv can be tried as batsman alone. Saha can keep if fit.

Parthiv is not a reliable batsman. But he can be relied if he is keeping wickets. As a batsman alone, he may not merit a place in the team.

Playing Saha is like playing one batsman less. With Rahane out of form, we only have Kohli and Pujara as pure batsmen. That will be a scary scenario.

Rahul should come in for Vijay if he is fit. Parthiv should be our WK batsman and Nair should get another chance.

I know he is not a long term prospect. But he looks in good touch , also being a Left hander at the top helps.

Huh?

That's why you are rating him so high.

He dropped Bairstow when he was on 54 and Eng was on 150 odd in first innings. It was a missed stumping too.
He again dropped Bairstow on 89 but Yadav got him lbw the next ball.
He dropped Hameed on 6 2nd innings and he went on to score 58.
He didn't collect a simple catch of Moeen from Jaddu which was super close and any other day, could have easily been another drop.

And I may have missed any of his other mistakes.

Now tell....he had decent match with the ball?

What if Bairstow didn't get out on 89 and went on to take Eng to 350? Would India have recovered from 150-5 when they knew they were 200 runs behind?

A bad WK will change the complexion of a game far more than a good WK who is a bad batsman. Maybe Parthiv may not make a mistake next game but he has a reputation of being a shoddy WK. Saha may be weak with the bat and may have fluffed some too but he has a reputation of being a solid WK.

Parthiv's fluent inning reminded me of Dhawan against Australia. Really pleased with his batting, but what we need right now is a wicket-keeper.

Missed Gillespie stumping and Martyn catch which costs us the Chennai test match.

troodon....see this.

The only saving grace for Parthiv is that Dinesk Karthik is an EVEN WORSE keeper.

I was talking about series in Aus in 2003. I think he screwed up in the Sydney test too.

Just goes to show the genius in Dhoni! At his prime he could play as a batsman alone, a keeper alone and his leadership skills was an added bonus! Indians should relax and carefully build this one up. More than finding the "best" keeper for the test team, it is better to fix the balance in the team somehow even if its makeshift arrangement.

India are facing trouble in both "opening" department and "keeping" (besides other issues also). After Dhoni no one is really reliable with both gloves and bat! And after Sehwag no one is giving that assurance as test opener! So if somebody like Parthiv Patel is serving a "makeshift" purpose of temporarily solving both these problems to some extent, why not? He is not going to do any worse than our specialist openers at the moment and he is not going to do that bad behind wickets compared to others! On the other hand he is opening an option of including extra batsman in the middle order No.6 (Nair) and of course retaining extra bowler! So he is "gold" at the moment (suddenly!)

This patch-up can continue till we discover one day that Pant is a superior wicketkeeper-batsman after Dhoni, and we find back that solid test-opening pair like Sehwag-Gambhir (At the most Rahul has that potential even he is struggling at the moment with injuries and consistency) So patience is the key!

And replying to a poster above, sorry Parthiv cannot play as a batsman alone! He is already a fragile option.

If he can pile on big centuries in international cricket, he can even try to make the team as a pure bat.

Its all fun and games till a WK loses you a match/series.

The psychological impact a keeper has on team goes beyond stats.

Parthiv may do well next game but we are playing with fire if we gonna select a keeper who could drop catches. Unless of course, he has improved by leaps and bounds in domestic and last game was just a case of nerves.

:)) Suddenly India has become a confused team with bowlers batting like specialists, wicket-keeper coming to open! Probably its not a bad idea to ask a batsman to bowl he may to better than a specialist bowler and ask Kohli to keep wickets!

Why think negatively? Some of our so called specialist, veteran batsman and bowlers have lost matches for us! Just see practically without being emotional. Just look at the current moment. It is not that we should stick to this ploy forever. We need to keep building. (I am sure Kumble-Kohli is planning about it)

Its not thinking negatively.

WK is a very very crucial spot in a test team. Why do you think test teams invest in proper WK? Why not go for great batsmen/dodgy keepers by thinking positively?

Just cos a batsmen/bowler/fielder can lose you a game doesn't mean we can say "it happens" to a keeper. Why? Cos a keeper will be put under spotlight way way more times during a test than anyone else.

I get your point about makeshift keeper but I was responding to your point about doing what is good for the balance of the team. Just cos something is good on paper need not necessarily be good for us in reality.

I desperately want Parthiv as a bat in my team but I realize the threat that it comes with when he is made to keep.

Personally speaking, if Saha is fit, I would take him and let Parthiv compete with others for a pure bat slot. Our 3 spinners (and pacers) will feel more at ease and they will win us games like they always have.

If he can pile on big centuries in international cricket, he can even try to make the team as a pure bat.

That is not even a remote possibility, no fool will expect that!

This thing has to be just treated for the "present" scenario! No problem if he is dropped for next series if there is other better option available! Just think about the next match (Rahul is injured/out of form, Saha is injured/out of form, Vijay not in touch) Parthiv is looking hot for the team at this "moment".

Indian Cricket management is thinking in a very professional manner right now (something like how South Africa and Australia were thinking in the past) Fans are misreading and misinterpreting these!

Yes he missed catches and stumping at 5day when India needed wickets , at last India manged to get out their specialist batsman and only tailenders were batting , but biggest culprit was that bucknor , he kept on giving not out on plumb nearly in front of off- middle.

I have not watched these games fully and not able to comprehend on who is keeping better! But I know with reputation Saha is a better keeper. But I have heard he is not doing that well with the gloves. And he is too inferior with bat (bowlers are doing better than him). Also it is not that Saha keeps well always, and Parthiv doesn't always! Its also based on current form, current physical condition, momentum, temperament!

Ok. Parthiv is pathetic with his glove work..

Saha is better than him. But Saha is not going to do anything with the bat against good bowling units.

You pick your choice. Until we find the right keeper, I will take my chances and pick Pathiv over Saha.

If Ashwin stops contriuting with the bat (bad form), our batting looks ultra thin with Saha as a Keeper batsman.

Saha can be masked as long as Ashwin/Jaddu/Jayant can score 150 runs between them. Trouble comes when the trio of our spinners get into a bad rut.

It is unfair to compare his keeping in 2003 with that in 2016 (Where he had hardly played any first class matches!) The guy has been dropped from international cricket and I am sure he has taken first class cricket seriously after that. Let's see how he goes until we find a proper replacement.

And that is what tempts teams and they get burnt.

A good keeper increases your odds unless he is woefully out of form. A bad keeper will have a few good games before going back to his usual level (unless he has improved big time and is no longer like his older self).

The Parthiv I see now is the same Parthiv I always saw. Scary keeper.

That is not even a remote possibility, no fool will expect that!

No one said Indian management has been unprofessional. Parthiv was the only choice.

DK hasn't kept in recent times (injury) and even if he did, I would NEVER EVER select him. An absolute garbage keeper. Pant isn't really good at keeping I heard. So Parthiv is the logical choice.

With Parthiv too, India needed 200 runs from Ash-Jaddu-Jayant to win this game. ;-)

As long as our regular test bats (barring Kohli and Pujara) flop, we will have this issue.

Its a tough call no doubt.

When you see the same 2003 version now, you kinda remain skeptical...won't you.

Anyways, if he keeps well, its actually great for India. Will solve so many problems. But that's a wild hope only.

You did not get my point bro.

We can have Parthiv Patel open the batting and play an extra batsman to fortify our batting. So its not just Patel scoring runs at the top. The extra batsman will allow us to score more runs while not weakening our batting.

If we are gonna to that, why can't we do it by keeping Saha and playing an extra bat? Would make our bowlers relax.

Its not like Parthiv is gonna score daddy hundreds in international cricket. But the batsmen he drops may. Last test, England made around 87 runs extra due to his drops (and I am excluding effect of partnerships which would make the tally go to 120 easily).

When can we expect to see rishabh pant in the test team?

He cannot get into ODI and T20 teams as long as MSD is there. Unless he is picked as a specialist batsman (will be hard).

In Tests, looks like his keeping is not good. Might be a long wait unless selectors take a chance.

im so surprised he ia still around when i saw his name on the scorecard i was like this Parthiv Patel it cant be the one from when i was a kid but then i saw him and it was him albeit with an impressive beard to cover that babyface. I remember him as a young fresh faced keeper in Indias 2002 tour of England when i was just a kid whats he been doing the last 14 years ?

Partiv can't play as a pure batsman, he always throw his wicket after making cute 30, you need to convert this innings at least as a half century if not century, if he wants to play as a pure batsman.

Surprising, he is a great player of short balls. Did quite well and should be kept in the 15 member team as extra opener/keeper. There were too many pacers selected when its the openers who have been playing musical chairs with injuries.

So what did he do here in the second innings?

He's the best player of pace I've seen, among keepers, from the last 30+ years & even opened against the likes of Lee, Akhtar that too away from India. His frailties were mainly against spin, particularly Warne, Murali et al.

As for anyone advocating Saha over Parthiv for the remainder of this series, as a specialist keeper, I guess you must've miseed at least half a dozen chances he fluffed n the first two tests. Saha was always a very limited batter, but when a keeper doesn't bat properly these days his form spills over into his keeping skills. You'll see that with modern keepers, this isn't the 90's & we can't afford to take punts on a below avg keeper/bat right now especially keeping an eye on the future.

Pant could be tried sometime during our home test run but Saha is at best a dodgy batter, since his debut vs SA in 2010, but I can't see him adding any value to the team atm with the form he's in.

Fair enough! I am sure Parthiv would have got re-looked at some point if Dhoni was not around! Monster Dhoni blocked all the above-averages, below-averages keepers from getting into the team! It is unfortunate that we still are not able to find proper keepers even after Dhoni has vacated a spot for them!

If Saha is also dropping catches and leaking runs then he is utter waste, because he is not adding any value to the batting line-up and future hopes (his age) either.

Yes he can be in the squad (especially the long squads we select for overseas. We can avoid the process of interim-replacement of an injured player in the middle of the tour). But definitely he cannot play as pure batsman. Our batting talent is not really that scarce! In such case I would play Rohit who can at least assure a surprise huge score on flat tracks!
