Found a very good distinction. Thought I should share:

Patriotism

Noun: The root of the word patriotism is patriot, or a person who is loyal to their country. In general, this is a very positive feeling. Patriotism is support for one’s country because you feel pride in it, and a belief in the values of that country.

Examples

Patriotism is needed in a country after war to help revive the country’s economy and society.

Nationalism

Noun: For nationalism, the meaning is quite different. Instead of just a positive feeling of pride in your country, nationalism is a feeling of superiority.

You will think that your country is better than other countries, to the point that you reject other countries – their people, products, culture, language, etc. – simply because they are from other countries. Even if things from your own country are inferior, you defend them unconditionally because you believe you country is better.

Examples

I originally thought that the driving force behind that organization was patriotism, but after they started taking more extreme measures and stances I realized it had turned into nationalism.

While a pride (sic) in your own country is certainly encouraged, ... excessive pride or outright rejection of other cultures is not! Nationalism can lead a country to become closed off and inhibit its growth and cooperation with other nations. In the globalized world of today, cooperation is certainly preferable to conflict.

My conclusion:

Nowhere is nationalism and distrust more prevalent than between neighbors with shared history - Singapore-Malaysia, Palestine-Israel, North-South Korea, Pakistan-India, US-Russia (maritime), North-South Sudan etc.

This leads to maintaining large armies, rabid skepticism of each other, meddling in each other's affairs and rampant belief in each population that their side is correct.

Until they die hating and the next generation takes over.

For me: Patriotism is loving your country but also knowing when to criticize. Whereas Nationalism is loving your country no matter what and believing that your country is superior.

Today, Nationalism has a bad rep but it wasn’t always this way, plus there is a misconception about Nationalism being a conservative idea.
Nationalism was actually a liberal idea inspired by the French Revolution and the ideas from the enlightenment era.
Originally, Nationalism meant that a group of people who shared the same history, culture, language and heritage should be able to create their own nation and break free from their imperial masters. This was especially true for the Germans who lived under French occupation during the reign of Napoleon or the Greeks who lived under Ottoman Turkish rule.

You mean nationalism is equivalent to being religious?

Where did I say that?

The equivalency of “Nationalism is loving your country no matter what and believing that your country is superior”

Change it with Religion.. isn’t that how it is?

I am not a nationalist. If my country does something wrong, I am vocal about it. I am loyal to my country as long as my country makes right choices.

I think nationalism is cancer.

Fine? Do you think patriotic people are looking for approval of a uber religious person?

Religion is off-limit. Religion has nothing to do with nationalism or patriotism.

Agnostics and atheists have the same feeing about religion, so congratulations.

Yeah, I guess so. Religious people tend to believe that their religion is superior, but so do atheists/agonstic. They also believe that they’re superior and frequently treat religious people in a very condescending way. I guess that’s true for most ideologies.

I agree on that.. guess balance is the key and absolute of anything is troublesome..

Patriotism is loving your country. Nationalism is hating other countries.
