The philosophy of professionalism and its connection with performance, which, in turn, provides big rewards and incentives to the best-performing cricketers, is the essence of the 2020-21 domestic cricket season, which commences on 30 September.

Once the lowly paid top domestic cricket performers now have the opportunity to earn as high as PKR3.2million, which is 83 per cent more than 2019-20, and as low as PKR1.8million, still a seven per cent increase from what the players in the highest category received last year.

These player earnings can been calculated following the announcement of the 2020-21 domestic cricket schedule, that provides the best of the best cricketers the opportunity to feature in all 10 National T20 Cup, 10 Quaid-e-Azam Trophy and 10 Pakistan Cup matches.

With each of the 10 A+ category players to receive PKR150,000 as monthly retainer for 12 months and a match fee of PKR40,000 for National T20 Cup and Pakistan Cup each, and PKR60,000 for Quaid-e-Azam Trophy, players maintaining and displaying high levels of professionalism throughout the season will earn PKR3.2million.

And, this doesn’t stop here. Players can increase their earnings if they reach the finals, which will guarantee them additional match fee as well as share in the prize moneys.

Similarly, monthly retainer of D category domestic players is PKR40,000 but they will get the same match fee as the highest category player. This, in turn, means any D category player who features in all the 30 First XI league matches will earn PKR1.8million. These numbers will increase if a player’s side reaches the finals as this will mean more matches and share in prize moneys.

This earning is more than seven per cent of what domestic contracted players received in the 2019-20 season. Last year, all the domestic contracted First XI players had received a flat monthly retainer of PKR50,000 and match fee of PKR40,000 for white-ball cricket and PKR75,000 for red-ball cricket.

Director - High Performance, Nadeem Khan: “While finalising the 2020-21 domestic calendar, we not only had an eye on the three global white-ball events, we were also mindful that we had to improve our contracts that must benefit the players financially and encourage them to further raise the levels of their fitness and form so they can also stake claims in the franchise and national sides.

“The PCB is aware that Pakistan cricketers are not the highest-paid in the world, but it is our endeavour to slowly and gradually improve their contracts so that they can get best returns for their talent and also plan their futures.

3.2m rupees is the upper limit which is around £14.8k maximum which really is not good enough.

English County cricket has a minimum salary of £27.5k for any professional over 21. English players playing at international level are earning anywhere between £300,000 to over £1m. Add in IPL contracts and they can double their annual earnings.

Overall, I feel it is a positive move for the players and the sport in the country. It will help to attract more people to the sport but they really need to bridge the gap.

I also think the poor salaries are a key contributing factor as to why players find themselves involved in spot fixing etc.

Comparison will be better suited to Srl or BD. India has lot of money including corporate money involved in cricket which again isnt comparable at this time.

You need to keep in mind the financial situation of other countries as well , PCB isnt a very rich board and per capita income of pakistan is 8 times less than that of uk. For a change its a very good step and should be appreciated.

75k is not bad for someone in Pakistan. I think many first class cricketers from humble backgrounds would gladly take this 75K amount.

I think if you are a starter in a bank in Pakistan you usually start with around 30k per month. So in comparison to that 75K isn't that bad in Pakistan.

Cricketers not selected by their respective regions those are the ones truly suffering with no penny at all.

There are 10 FC matches in the season, there are also other domestic competitions [National T20 Cup (40k per match, 10 matches), Pakistan Cup (60k per match, 10 matches)] on top of the monthly contract they are already getting which goes up to 150k per month. 75k for a single match is a boatload.

Yes it is less than $500, but that is irrelevant. Last time I checked these Pakistani players are spending money in Pakistan, where Rupees are the currency. PCB generates money in Rupees, the players will spend money in Rupees, who cares what it ends up being in USD?

Lahore, 13 September 2020:

The Pakistan Cricket Board has reiterated that the domestic players are not required to resign from their parent departments to obtain contracts for the 2020-21 domestic season, which commences on 30 September with the National T20 Cup.

“The PCB is neither asking the players to resign nor to cancel existing contracts with their departments if they are interested in securing player contracts for the 2020-21 domestic season.

“All the PCB is asking from the employed and contracted cricketers, in accordance with applicable policies and SOPs, is for them to provide No Objective Certificates (NOC) from their departments so that they can be offered contracts for the 2020-21 domestic season. The issuance of such NOCs is part of the normal course of business; is not only a PCB requirement but that of the departments as well; and is, in fact, an established past practice.

“Once the relevant NOC has been issued by the player’s parent organisation and submitted to the PCB, the PCB will make payments in accordance with the terms of the contract it has executed with the player,” the PCB said in a statement.

The PCB has already explained that an employed cricketer is eligible for the 2020-21 domestic contract and the PCB will have no objection if the player’s parent organisation also pays him during the term of the 2020-21 domestic player contract.

“An employed cricketer can be offered 2020-21 domestic contract provided that the player has submitted the relevant NOC issued by his employer to the PCB in accordance with the rules and regulations applicable to such players.

“Whether or not the player will be paid by the employer is a matter between the two entities.

The PCB has further explained that two types of contracts will be offered to the high-performing domestic players.

“A maximum of 32 players in each Cricket Association will be offered domestic central contracts, while the remaining players will be offered a seasonal contract.

“Under the domestic contract, a player will be bound by the obligations of the domestic central contract and will receive a monthly retainer along with match fee, daily allowances, other related benefits etc. wherever applicable.

Rest is good but this part is pretty surprising in the article.

Mr Ramiz Raja announced 192 cricketers with domestic contracts will see an increase of PKR100,000 in monthly retainers across all rungs. This means that domestic men’s cricketers in the 2021-22 season, which begins with the Cricket Associations T20, the Second XI competition, from 15 September at the Quetta’s Bugti Stadium, will now earn between PKR140,000 to PKR250,000 per month, which is an increase of 250 per cent for the players in the D category, the lowest category.

“It is our duty to care for our cricketers and continue to take measures which strengthen our system,” Ramiz said. “This will also play a role in ending any uncertainty surrounding the current cricket structure; the welfare of present and former cricketers is paramount to me.”

Unless and until our educated youth get into this sport, we aren't going to become an elite team of today's time. Our players from such humble backgrounds will always remain meek, lack confidence, communication skills and never make friends from other teams.

They can't even sledge. They can't communicate with them.

At a minimum, the salary needs to be 400,000 rs per month for the lowest class of contracted players.

A class needs to be paid around a million per month minimum.

These are elite athletes of the highest earning sports body in the country.

Simply can't compare with a salary of say a regional manager in an MNC or even top executives.

The question has to be asked about whether they would get the same salaries from anyone else. The PCB is a gravy train. The biggest salaries should go to the players, umpires and groundsman. The marketing guys should be paid per results.

ISLAMABAD: A parliamentary panel on Wednesday was informed that former chief executive officer (CEO) Wasim Khan was the highest paid employee of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) drawing a monthly salary of Rs2.6 million.

The new PCB management for the first time shared complete details of the salaries of all its employees with the National Assembly Standing Committee on Inter-provincial Coordination (IPC), which met here at the Parliament House with MNA Nawab Sher in the chair.

According to the PCB record, there are 18 employees in the Board who get salaries of Rs500,000 or above.

The committee was told that Wasim received a monthly salary of Rs2.6 million.


Other high paid employees of the PCB included physiotherapist Wycliffe Andrew Deacon, (Rs2.1 million), director media Sami Burney (Rs1.3 million), director high performance Nadeem Khan (Rs1.3 million), head international players development Saqlain Mushtaq (Rs1.2 million), chief executive officer (associate) Salman Naseer (Rs1.2 million), chief financial officer Javed Murtaza (Rs1.2 million), chief medical officer Najeebullah Soomro (Rs1.2 million), chairman selection committee Mohammad Wasim (Rs1 million), director human resource Serena Agha (Rs865,000), director international cricket operations Zakir Khan (Rs844,708), director security and anti-corruption Asif Mahmood (Rs650,000), SGM operations Asad Mustafa (Rs613,000), SMG Finance & Accounts Ateeque Rasheed (Rs600,000) while chief executive officers Anwar Saleem Kasi, Babar Khan, Najeeb Sadiq and Abdullah Khurram Niazi earn Rs500,000 each per month.

The committee was supposed to get briefing from PCB chairman Ramiz Raja about the Board’s affairs. However, he could not turn up due to his engagements in Karachi. The NA Standing Committee chairman while showing displeasure said the PCB head should have been in the committee meeting, to which PCB’s chief financial officer told the committee that Ramiz is in Karachi for his meeting with Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah.

The committee also took up the issue of PCB’s consortium with A TV and pending audit paras of cricketing body.

While briefing on “The Prevention of Offences in Sports Bill, 2020”, moved by MNA Iqbal Muhammad Ali Khan, Secretary of the Ministry of IPC informed the committee that initially the matter was taken up with the Ministry of Law and Justice for legal opinion. The Law Division opined that post the 18th Constitutional Amendment, the Parliament is no longer competent to legislate on the subject of sports and also advised to take up the matter with the Ministry of Interior.

He also informed that the IPC Ministry has already taken up the matter with the Ministry of Interior and requested the committee to direct the Interior Ministry to furnish their views/comments on the matter.

The NA committee directed the Interior Ministry to furnish its views/comments on “The Prevention of Offences in Sports Bill, 2020” to the committee at its next meeting.

Not that I support hiring such expensive professionals but Rs.2.6 million equates to around £10k which is absolutely normal to be paid for a high post exec in the UK.

id say your being kind. whilst i understand that pak has diff cost of living etc, its pretty obvious the pcb will always find it difficult to compete on a global scale for the best talent until paks economy improves.

our national team head physio earns around £85,000, roughly in line with physio salary in UK football championship (second division equivalent). gives you some idea of the kinda support staff the pcb can afford, in a global context.
