PCB to revamp national coaching set-up

• Chairman Ehsan Mani approves PCB Cricket Committee recommendations

Lahore, 7 August 2019:

The Pakistan Cricket Board today announced it will be immediately undertaking a robust recruitment process after it decided not to renew the contracts of head coach Mickey Arthur, bowling coach Azhar Mahmood, batting coach Grant Flower and trainer Grant Luden.

The PCB Cricket Committee, which met on Friday, were unanimous in their recommendations for the change. The recommendations were forwarded and discussed with the PCB Chairman, Ehsan Mani.

As part of the recruitment process, the PCB will now advertise the four available roles and will invite high level applications from interested candidates.

Mr Ehsan Mani said: “I am thankful to the PCB Cricket Committee for submitting their recommendations following an exhaustive and detailed review process. The committee comprised of individuals who possess tremendous acumen, experience and knowledge. The unanimous recommendation of the Committee was that it was time for new leadership and a fresh approach. I am happy to accept their strong recommendations.

“On behalf of the PCB, I want to sincerely thank Mickey Arthur, Grant Flower, Grant Luden and Azhar Mahmood for their hard work and unwavering commitment during their tenures with the national men’s team. We wish them every success in their future endeavors.

“The PCB remains committed to its fans and followers and we will do our utmost to ensure that we make decisions that continue to move Pakistan cricket forward in all formats.”

I would not have mind if Mickey stayed for another 2 years. But I saw no lack of determination for him to invest his time at Domestic level or rotate players as much.

His core golden boys were: Imad and Malik.

With Wasim Khan in, you can say that a new era has now begun.

Good job that Mickey Authur is removed

Well done Wasim Khan

Damn. How bad Mickey Arthur's q and a have been at the cricket committee meeting? It appears that he just took for granted that he would be given an extension?

He deserved it too. Can't be throwing your captain under the bus and not take personal responsibility for things.

Team needed a change and a new direction, he had sailed past his impact period and had no new ideas to offer

My assumption
Mickey wanted 2 year contract while PCB was keen to extend his contract till next t20 worldcup .This may be fall out between 2 parties

Local coaches will be licking their lips while the only foreign coach that will emerge strong contender is dean jones unless until some one like Tom moddy is available

Best news by far. The useless "captain" also needs to get booted out now. I'm sure he's the next in line.

Although I won't hold my breath for much improvement, Arthur didn't deserve to have his contract renewed. Too many naive errors and strategic missteps over the course of the last two years since the Champions Trophy.

Not in favor of the move. I feel Mickey is the best the PCB could have done and he brought a different culture to the team that we really benefited on. With this current crop of players any new coach will have a rough transitioning period and Mickey had the edge as he was incumbent. Will see what PCB do now.

A scapegoat I suppose, no? Either way, I don´t quite agree with this decision. I don´t think that Mickey Arthur is the hurdle between Pakistan and progress and development. The problems lies in other holes, not here. He was immensely dedicated and passionate about Pakistan cricket. Should´ve continued with him. Anyway, let´s see who the next coach is and what great changes he brings in.

My faith in the management was diminishing once we lost the kiwi test series in the UAE.

The nail in the coffin was the selection of Yasir Shah for the Aussies and England series... there was just too much muddled thinking and misplaced faith in an aging cricketer who was never good to begin with.

He even recommended shadab khan as future odi and t20 captain ,which is is beyond absurd.

Hope PCB will not select Mohsin Khan as head coach and Latif as selector. It will be end of Pakistan cricket.

I guess something did have to change after the world cup. We're a country that shouldn't feel content after finishing 5th in the world cup. Hopefully we can change the culture where we now expect nothing less than the best from the team.

However I do appreciate moments in Mickeys tenure such as the Champions Trophy win, the England Test wins and the greater focus on fitness which has been beneficial

I was an advocate of Mickey Arthur and wanted him to stay . . anyway, how bad or good a decision this is will be determined by who replaces him . .

ANY LOCAL coach will be a MAJOR downgrade on Arthur! that's for sure . .

Younis Khan as head coach
Bowling coach -Shoaib Akthar/Shane Bond
Spin bowling coach-Saqlain Mustaq
Chief Selector-Rashid Latif

This will be the perfect picks

def need to rethink this.... Younas Khan as head coach? Y? the guy cannot sit through a coaching session and you want to give him a team? he will be resigning more than Afridi retired .... complete joke. a bigggg batsmen but a small people manager.

Shoaib Akhtar , an even bigger joke .... he is better applying for a wrestling coach rather than cricket. Fight fight fight is fine but the guy had limited skills as a bowler himself .. also any experience?

Rashid LAtif? really? you want to have a team of Khurram Manzoor, Rameez Raja Jnr, Asad Shafiq, Anwar ali, Fawad Alam (he actually did deserve to be in the team) Tabish Khan, Sohail Khan? .... Rashid is 1 serious joker and racist along with basit ali , Tanveer Ahmad, Aamir Sohail and Sarfraz Nawaz... these tumors should be kept far away from PCB

Saqlain and Bond.. yes... they have experience and great history ... they should be brought in for sure.

Persisting with useless players like Fahim, Yasir, Malik, Hafeez and Sarfraz for ODI and Azhar/Sarfraz/Shafiq in test cost Micky's job. If him and Inzi was little flexible both would have retained.

PCB should consider sabih azhar if they are looking for local coaches.

This guy spoiled Nasir Nawaz's career and one of the worst character in our domestic. He will do same to Babar or any upcoming talent. Should never allow this leech in PCB's 1000m perimeter.

How the hell can one remove Arthur as coach when he's done so well for Pakistan?! Babar flourished, Pakistan won the CT, Pakistan fast bowling rejuvenated, Haris Sohail came into his own... so many positives! The only chink is first round exit of world cup but Pakistan played better than most. If not for some bad luck, Pakistan could have gone all the way as well. I think Arthur will be missed and it is a bad decision to let him go when Pakistan cricket is just taking off...

Agree that Mickey Arthur was passed his tenure as results stated that however he has changed Pakistan cricket the past 3 years. Physically and fitness wise the players have improved tenfold.

Which other overseas coach will come and stay in Pakistan??, I don't think no one will.

The best coach would be Mike Hesson, he can have a similar impact he did with NZ in 2015, and maybe he could bring Mccullum as a batting/fielding coach now he is retired and even Shane Bond as bowling coach.

Poor decision to sack Mickey. We don't have high calibre coaches waiting to take over from him and that's because the Head Coach role of the Pakistan side isn't the most prestigious opportunity to add to their CVs and I don't think many of them are keen to settle in Pakistan.

Mickey has been instrumental to the development of several players including Babar Azam.

I have full faith in Wasim Khan but I fear the incompetent Ehsan Mani will be calling the shots. I have a horrible feeling he will bring a toxic individual like Mohsin Khan or bring back Waqar Younis to replace him. Gloomy times ahead.

Sacking Sarfraz should have taken precedence but I suspect Ehsan Mani is content with him as leader of the side.

I agree. Looking from the outside, Pakistan's WC campaign appeared disorganised; players were brought in from outside the initial 30 (Wahab), the best middle order batsman was left out of the team until it was too late, bowlers were taken on the trip who no-one trusted to play (Hasnain), the fielding was the worst in the cup (most drops). These are things directly within the coaches influence.

Interested to see if they go local or foreign coach.

Grant bradburns contract expires in 2021 .He is the only survivor after the coaching staffs revamp.

Not surprising. Hopefully his replacement has a track record of improving players. Don’t know who we turn to.

Sarfraz needs to be sacked next.

Not surprising at all any other board would have done the same. Team performances were pretty poor throughout Mickey’s tenure with the exception of CT17 and T20 victories.

If they go with a local coach, I can totally see our fitness and fielding standards plummeting back to what they were in the pre-Mickey era.

I can understand

but if they select Hafeez/Malik/Sarfraz again

then bravo

we w

I don't know about the head coach role, but I would want to see these guys occupy the roles mentioned below:

Head coach - ?
Bowling coach - Shane Bond
Batting coach - Michael Bevan
Fielding coach - Steve Rixon (bring him back at all costs)

Reports are comming that wasim khan is in favour of a foreign head coach not local.

whole heartedly agree, Pakistan Woman team members might even tell stories that would be shocking at the very least

Lol no we'll probably see this:
Head Coach: Mohsin Khan
Batting Coach: Faisal Iqbal
Bowling Coach: Abdul Razzaq

Would be a disaster if the likes of Rashid, Moin, Mohsin are brought in.

Some selection changes I vouch for now that Inzi and Mickey are gone:

Azhar Ali and Asad Shafiq dropped from Tests.

Saad Ali and Usman Salahuddin both in the playing XI in Tests.

Sarfraz sacked as captain and dropped from Tests and ODIs.

Shan Masood or Haris Sohail made Test captain.

Fakhar dropped for ODIs.

Drop Hasan Ali from all formats.

Move Haris Sohail to open in ODIs, bring in Saud Shakeel to the middle order.

Bring back Umar Akmal for T20Is.

Drop Hafeez, Malik and Wahab from all formats.

Get Ahsan Ali, Zafar Gohar and Umar Siddiq into the squads as well.

If they're going to make wholesale changes, might as well go all in on youth.

Good decision

Almost every single player has regressed under this coaching staff. Before anyone mentions Babar, he may have become more consistent but he has lost his batting aggression that he showed earlier in his career. No surprise, his team loses more often than not when Babar plays a longer inning.

Wrong move by PCB.

No ex Pak cricketer is skilled enough to develop a modern day Pakistan team.

By not renewing Mickey, PCB has made a big mistake. No other qualified foreign coach will bother coming here and we will be stuck with out matlabi ‘me first mentality’ of our ex cricketers.

We will go back to tuk tuk batting of the 80s where we post 240 or 270 on a good day!

Enjoy Pak fans..here come the people our qaum deserve ... Mohsin ‘i beat england myself’ Khan , Rashid Latif (karachi mafia time) and wait for it....Aquib Javed / the bowling action killer !

I believe need a young manager who has a new age approach, I do believe that cricket coaches are like football managers. The old timers have passed it.

I would love to have sangarkarra as head coach or even a batting coach. Ticks all the boxes for me.

Mickey’s tenure as Pakistan head coach:

Test Played 28, W 10, L 17, D 1
ODIs Played 68, W 32, L 34, NR 2
T20Is Played 37, W 30

Younis Khan as head coach
Bowling coach -Shoaib Akthar/Shane Bond
Spin bowling coach-Saqlain Mustaq
Chief Selector-Rashid Latif

This will be the perfect picks

And also make Ijaz butt the new chairman and replace Wasim Khan with Javed Miandad .. :ma

Choices for coaching staffs

Head Coach:
Moody, Gillespie, Kirsten, Stuart Law, Fleming, Kepler Wessels, Lehmann

Batting Coach:
Grame Smith, Inzi, Bevan, Mahela, Hussey, Yousuf

Bowling Coach:
Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis, Allan Donald, Shane Bond, McGrath, Walsh, Ambrose

If they are going for local coaches then I would go with

Head Coach + Bowling coach: Wasim Akram
Batting Coach : Yousuf

Grant Luden now a candidate for Strength and Conditioning Coach with BCCI.

There is a new face in the Momentum Multiply Titans ranks, with Grant Luden taking over the reins as the Strength and Conditioning Coach.

Luden has spent the past decade racking up experience on the international stage, working with some of the best players in the world.

“After ten years of international cricket, three ODI World Cups, five T20 World Cups and a Champions Trophy medal, it is great to be back home where it all started, with the Titans,” he said this week.

Luden studied at Pretoria Technikon, which is now known as TUT. As a sports medicine student with an avid cricket brain, he offered his services to assist during Titans practise sessions.

“Dave Nosworthy was kind enough to let me be involved in the Titans set up. I was eager to learn. I threw balls, helped wherever I could, preparing drinks, picking up towels and learning about team dynamics.

“Richard Pybus also allowed me to participate in training sessions,” he said of his apprenticeship.

Upon graduating in 2001, Luden stayed in the sport, as he coached the University of Pretoria (TUKS) cricket team along with Colin Dettmer. He later coached the TUT side to a league title in 2007/08, before landing his first international gig.

“I was offered a contract to work for the Bangladesh National Cricket Team. I left in 2013 after learning so much about the field of strength and conditioning,” he explained.

Then, in 2014, he landed the dual role of Fielding and Strength & Conditioning Coach for the Pakistan team, working alongside Mickey Arthur at an exciting time for the team.

The 2017 ICC Champions Trophy win was a major highlight, as was heading to the 2015 and 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup tournaments.

“The experience with Pakistan was invaluable, and I have memories that I will cherish forever. Now I want to make a fresh start at home, and I couldn’t have asked for a better place to start than with the Titans,” he said excitedly.

“Grant has worked around the cricket world with some of the best players in the game, and we are looking forward to seeing what he can bring into the team,” Sky Blues coach Mark Boucher said of the appointment.

Grant Luden is back in the PCT staff members now, he will be offering his services as strength and conditioning coach
