The PCB is facing criticism from the reporters and on social media from the fans that the ticket prizes for the PSL are too high especially considering the deteriorating economic situation in the country and not everyone can afford to pay Rs 5-12k daily for tickets to watch the games.

I find it funny that all resteraunts in Pakistan are always fully jam packed on nights where the average price for a family meal is around Rs 6-10k but people are not willing to pay that much for tickets to watch a live game.

The PCB is obviously looking to make big money on Ticket Gate Receipts now that the PSL is being held on 4 different venues in the country.

Unfortunately, it looks like Pakistanis don't want to spend good money on watching Sports/Cricket and expect prices to be nominal.

Lets do a simple quick math. Lets assume a family of 4 paid 10k for a meal at some fancy restaurant. Now the same family that wants to watch PSL will have to pay 24k for the match and then you add the cost of food, water, drinks and all. The cost of all these will be around 28-30k.
I am not sure if all the tickets are for these prices but some enclosures will surely be and this is alot of cost to watch a single PSL match. Not even talking about the hassle to reach stadium here.

I think the middle class, lower middle class will look towards the Rs 950 tickets.

The VIP's will be the ones targetting the Rs 2000-12,000 tickets.

Not sure how the PSL Season passes will work, this is a new concept by the PCB.

Pakistan is going to through extreme inflation. Poor decision to implement such a hike.

Bro, the max 90% people can afford is a Rs.300-500 ticket. Anything above this amount and pcb will have a hard time selling tickets especially in Karachi. Rs 950 per ticket is simply too much considering all the other expenses and hassles combined with watching the match at stadium.

You have a point, the Pakistan England T-20 games in Karachi and Lahore were all sold out, the prices for that series varied b/w Rs 250 and 1,500.

The PCB probably feels that these amounts are too low and they need to be charging more to make good money. This will be a serious test for the PSL, if it has big pull among the masses then lets see if people are willing to pay these prices daily for 4-5 weeks.

they havnt really ihked the prices, players are paid in USD, so when the PKR weakens ticket prices will go up. from what i saw there looked to be plenty of demand for tickets.

as long as the products solid and entertaining there will always be people to fill out the stadiums.

To invest back into PSL and make it a premium product, then I'm afraid fans will have to pay up.

Are gate receipts so important for smallish grounds that we have?

What the PCB aren’t fully appreciating, is that full vibrant stadia makes your product come across as being more elite. Results aside, the full houses for the England T20 series were electric. Same with the attendance at all Qalandars games in Lahore last years PSL. PCB need to reduce prices to get fuller stadiums, because it’s the crowd that makes the PSL amazing. I hated watching the empty stadia in Karachi last year.

If people make salary in the thousands why would food cost and sports tickets be in the thousands? Even 5k for ticket price is extremely high. You can watch that for free on big screen TV instead.

Those who spend 10K on a meal, feel that it’s justified and worth it.
Same people may not find 5K cost, being justified for a game ticket.

And plus, the scores of bhooka nangi public that you see in crowds who come to watch the game as form of cheap n affordable entertainment, are not the ones spending 10K on a meal.

Unfair to compare families spending 6-10K out in restaurants with the average awaam who want to watch cricket, especially considering that they were deprived of watching international players for so long.

Not every one of the 30K minimum spectators in the stadium go eat out in restaurants every night. I get what the PCB is trying to do here, but this will prevent low-income families and individuals from being able to attend the games. There are many who are out on the streets who are barely earning rupees in the hundreds walking around selling balloons and cotton candy to kids. Others who have kids and have little savings to spend on their family for leisure.

They should maybe have some sort of a program to verify people with financial issues and aid them via discounts or anything of the sorts. But this probably won't be possible in a disorganized and mismanaged country like Pakistan. This kind of benefit happens in Canada all the time.

I mean how low can you go? The general and first class tickets seem very reasonably priced to me. The economic state of Pakistan isn't PSL's fault.

Brutal truth is these tickets aren't aimed at cotton candy sellers on the streets or others barely surviving. There is still a market there for which these tickets are affordable.

Most tickets are in the 600 to 3000 range depending on the match. Not sure why the article and discussion is one the highest priced enclosures which are a small fraction of the total capacity

Why doesn't the PCB introduce a full season PSL pass where individuals can spend Rs 200,000-300,000 in exchange for the right to attend all the PSL games in the season? There might be a market for such an initiative

5 days left before the start of the tournament and the opening match has 5100 unsold tickets, the second game in KHI has 12,000 unsold tickets.

Concerning stuff considering these games are now taking on a home and away basis now. Has the PCB blundered with the ticket prices?

Why keep entry tickets for local pyjama tournament?? It should be free of cost or bare minimum. You really expecting to make money by charging for entry fee for local mickey mouse cricket??
Open the gates and let the crowd in... create an atmosphere which will attract higher bids from broadcasters later on...

This is Pakistan's flagship premium product. If you let people in for free, you automatically devalue the product

tickets are expensive, its depends if there is high demand or not...

Anyways, if one pays that much money, than one hopes proper facilities and food would be there which wont be.

I might only attend one game, thats it.. Too expensive for me

If there are no people in the stadium, there is no value for your so called flagship premium product.
Isn't the product already built and surviving on tax payers money?? No need to squeeze more from the poor. They want their entertainment. Give it to them free of cost or charge what they can afford...

The individual franchises should be responsible for attracting their fan base to the stadiums. That is what the IPL Franchises do. Our Franchises view their teams as a 1-2 month operation and then just shut up shop for the rest of the year.

Tickets should be at the bare minimum and they should create Gold package we're they can attend any match.

It's going to be interesting to see what the attendances are like.

I think they'll be ok as the fixtures have been organised this time around with the teams playing several matches at their home venue.

Seems like they don't make enough money from the cringe Head and Shoulders and Tapal Tea moments.

So whilst the general public worries about ticket prices...

It will be a tragedy if stadiums are jampacked given that top teams came to pakistan and the stands were empty.

It wouldn't be a surprise.

Sadly there are too many fans these days who are only interested in T20 cricket.

However the Pakistan Test team lacks world class cricketers which is another reason for poor attendances in Test matches in Pakistan.

The ODIs werent too impressive either Sir. We talk about people 'deprived' of international cricket in pakistan but when it comes to pakistan nobody goes to watch it. Bangladesh test team has been mediocre for a long long time but people still turn ip to watch their team play.

Cant decide whether to get a season pass for rawalpindi or just 1 or 2 game tickets.

My friends dont even watch cricket, might be going alone

Just checked bookme.com

Multan game tickets are selling like hot cakes.. First games Rs.1000 and Rs.2000 tickets been sold out.

Even the 18k vvip ticket been sold out.

Meanwhile, the ticket of karachi are not selling, there are tiekts priced for RS 650 on 14th feb that haven't been sold, while Multan has sold few stands for next day aswelll.

Pathetic from Karachi.

The seats and view for the general stands is not good for National Stadium.

The seats and view for the general stands is not good for National Stadium.

bro, its the same situation in all stadiums. The view is as bad in Multan and Pindi. Multan stadium is huge so the view is worst there.

And in pindi we dont even have seats :))

Karachi shouldn't be given more than 5 games to host. Maybe give the matches to hyderabad.

The LHC spokesperson said on Thursday a letter written to the Multan stadium manager for the provision of VVIP passes of the Pakistan Super League’s opening ceremony for the judges and their families was a ‘misunderstanding’ and had been withdrawn.

“The letter was issued on account of misunderstanding and as and when the matter came to the notice of the senior additional registrar of Multan bench, the said letter was instantly withdrawn,” said the statement.

The letter bearing date of Feb 7, 2023, written to the stadium manager by Assistant Registrar Protocol Javed Saeed Khan on behalf of the senior additional registrar of the LHC went viral on social media and drew public criticism. The letter was titled: “Provision of chairman box, VVIP passes and red vehicles stickers for PSL.” The tournament is set to kick off on Feb 13 in Multan.

Pathetic really.

But there will still be plenty of freeloaders at each match no doubt.

The Ticket Sales for the Multan Games have been significantly better, the stadium capacity there is 37,000 and the avg unsold tickets for the games there are around 7-10k on average which should get better as there is time b/w the games.

However the ticket sales for the KHI games are poor and worrying. On avg 20-24k tickets on avg are unsold as off now which is inexcusable given that most of the games are featuring the home side i.e. Karachi Kings, there are a few games that are involving non-home sides.

The Franchises should be responsible for marketing and attracting their fans to the stadium. The PCB has given the Franchises a platform and 95% of the central pool revenues, they need to do their part now.

The PSL starts tomorrow and so far none of the games are sold out which is criminal given that these games have sides playing at home, the KHI games have an avg of 20,000 unsold tickets. The PCB has blundered with the pricing and along with the franchises have poorly marketed the tournament.

The first multan game has less than a 1000 tickets left so pretty much sold out. And the first Karachi game has less than 3000 tickets left so already close to being a full house.

And the more expensive tickets are already sold out for the first 2 days so what makes you say this is a pricing issue?

Not everyone buys tickets weeks in advance!

It looked pretty packed in the first game.

Decent attendance I thought today.

It wasn't full, but didn't look too far from being a full house.

First game of a league sets the tone for the rest of the tournament. First game given that it was featuring the home side should have been completely sold out. 2,800 unsold tickets is not acceptable.

2800 of 35000 unsold.

92% of tickets were sold. Math is important.

I can guarantee you, you will find that all IPL games have been sold out. Heck all the SA T-20 league games were sold out. If we want to make the PSL successful then we need to aim to have very game sold out to send a good message to international audiences and broadcasters.

Judging by the tickets sale in the first hour, pindi will be sold out in all matches.

Pakistan is not a first world country. Regardless of what certain upper class and middle class people would have you believe.

Ticket prices should be secondary.

Priority needs to be having stadiums 95% full. If this means full priced or free tickets to do so then so be it.

Looks like a good crowd at the NSK tonight.

I guess the restricted view complaints, getting to the ground, getting into the stadium etc are only for Test cricket.

Tomorrow's game in Multan has 7800 unsold tickets as of now

Yes all sorry excuses tbh They just arent interested in test cricket which is a real shame

But it's also a working day you can't compare India with pakistan when the population is 10 times bigger.

But it's also a working day you can't compare India with pakistan when the population is 10 times bigger.

India has a bigger middle class than Pakistan and Indian's work twice as hard as Pakistani's but they still make sure every IPL Match is jampacked. Zero excuses for the PCB, respective PSL franchises and people in general

The bulk of the tickets for the Lahore and Rawalpindi matches have already been sold out and its around 2 weeks before the games start over there. The people of Rawalpindi and Lahore are more hungry for Cricket vs people in Khi and Multan, there are too many unsold tickets for the remaining Khi and Multan leg which i doubt will be sold in such a short period of time.

Another reason may be Matches starting late. Matches should atleast start half an hour earlier i,e 7:30 or 7 PM.
You could clearly see Crowd start to leave by Powerplay of 2nd Innings. In ist match, stadium was ~85% empty at last overs.
I am sure TV Viewership would also be very low around mid 2nd innings.
Ist match ended at 1 AM & yesterday match also ended around 12:30 AM, who would like to watch a Domestic matches midnight.

7,300 unsold tickets for today's Multan game and 14,000 unsold tickets for tomorrow's Khi games.

The PCB seriously needs to consider taking the PSL away from KHI if the people of Khi do not even respect their own team and do not turn up in large numbers. Take the PSL to venues where the crowds will turn up day in, day out.

Most posts on social media are blaming the high ticket prices for the lower attendances and the PCB needs to reduce the ticket prices in a tough economy to boost attendances

Karachi stadium should definitely be full as thiers more than 10 million people living thier which in comparison is triple the population off multan.

Seemed like quite a few empty seats in Multan for their match versus Quetta?

Am hearing horror stories on Social Media about VVIP privilleges and mistreatment at the hands of security forces. People have paid Rs 12k for tickets only to find out to their horror that their seats have been taken for free by VIP's who didn't pay for them and as a result people who paid Rs 12k had to sit on Rs 1k seats.

Pakistan for you.

Seemed like quite a few empty seats in Multan for their match versus Quetta?

Watch the horror show in KHI, on average there are 14-20k seats unsold for the games there and these are games featuring the local Karachi Team. The PCB needs to reconsider hosting games there if Karachites don't even respect their own team.

In contrast all of Lahore games have been sold out in advance and Rawalpindi games on avg have around 800-2000 unsold tickets as of now.

A couple of students met Sethi appealing to him to reduce the prices or to make entry free for the PSL. He explained that the gate money goes to the Franchises therefore he can't make entry free for the PSL but he is going to give a 50% discount on PSL tickets in Karachi to students who are under 18. Let's see if that boosts ticket sales in Karachi

PCB announces 50pc discount on HBL PSL 8 tickets for children

Karachi, 16 February 2023:

To provide young cricket fans an opportunity to see the cricket stars in action up close, the Pakistan Cricket Board has decided to provide 50 per cent discount to those under the age of 18 for the HBL Pakistan Super League 8 matches in Karachi.

This discount is applicable for all matches and one ticket can be bought on a B-Form. Each child will be required to bring their B-Form, on which they have bought the ticket, to enter the stadium.

This discount is part of the PCB's efforts to continue to inspire the next generation to take up the sport.

i bought 2 tickets for myself, along with 3 other people. Planning to buy one more ticket aswell.

Cant wait

Why should the entry be free?

Is PSL a charity.

Lol it has nothing to do with the fans not respecting.

PCB actually needs to respect the fans and build some decent facilities in the stadium for the fans. This stadium is the worst for fans out of all the grounds I have been to.

Cricket consumers and general consumer culture has moved on a lot in Pakistan. However, the mentality around events and sports marketing has not moved one iota. The PCB and PSL Franchises have adopted a methodology that uses cliched tactics that do not resonate with Pakistanis. Their marketing strategy is muddled.

Who do they want as PSL games? What sort of consumer are they targeting? What facilities do these consumers expect?

I don't think these things have been considered in the PSL. Instead they think just holding cricket and releasing a dead theme tune every year is enough to engage people. I have seen criticism of Karachi fans not backing their home team, but this Karachi team is as much of a home team as the New York Strikers are in the Abu Dhabi League.

For example the Indian Premier League had first mover advantage and they have marketed their league to appeal to the affluent Indian middle class ( with actors, singers etc) and also to the aspirational working classes who are happy to buy tickets to show they have a seat at the table.

The Australians took a different model. They realised that their BBL would be most attractive to children and younger fans. So they marketed their league accordingly. They didnt even care that their major test players were unavaible and it often clashed with their premier event in the test calendar. But they didn't care because the test fan wasn't their target market.

England also marketed it heavily towards kids/parents but they took it to another level and created a whole new format! This engaged curious cricket fans the world over to see what the fuss was about.

The PSL in comparison is all muddled up. They don't have set dates in the calendars. Star players move around far too often and they have no clue who the target audience is - which results in a mish mash of nothing.

Within Pakistan there is a strong professional class, semi-affluent, frequents shopping malls and western resteraunts but seem totally absent from cricket. The PSL needs to work to attract these people.

dentifying target demographics is a crucial step in marketing any sports event. It allows sports marketers to create tailored marketing campaigns that resonate with their target audience, increase engagement and attendance, and ultimately drive revenue.

To identify target demographics, it's essential to understand the key characteristics of your ideal fan base. Start by analysing the sport, the event, and its history. What age groups, genders, and socio-economic backgrounds have shown an interest in similar events in the past? Are there any geographical areas where the sport is particularly popular or where the event is being hosted?

Once you have a basic understanding of your ideal fan base, you can start to dig deeper into their behaviour patterns and preferences. Conduct surveys and focus groups to get an idea of their interests, the channels they use to consume sports-related content, and their motivations for attending events.

And then put on the events accordingly. Simply hosting a cricket event and hoping people will come is not enough.

I didn't think that would be so much of an issue for you since you're a massive foodie. I thought your preference would be based on the quality of kebabs, samosas, spring rolls, pakoras, jalebi and kheer.

Looks like a number of empty seats again today in the Multan's match against Islamabad.

6600. Not a single psl game has been sold out so far. Pricing definitely is a factor.

Empty Seats and Dwindling Interest: Examining the Reasons for Low Turnouts in PSL Season 8

Faraz Ahmad Wattoo

Experts have highlighted the shortcomings in the PSL and the issues in the policies of the PCB since 2016. Now we have PSL Season 8 but PCB still spends almost nothing on the marketing and branding of the Pakistan Super League. In its second season, it lost its viewership as teams played in the empty stadiums of Dubai and Abu Dhabi. In its eighth edition, the tournament is being played in empty Stadiums across the Country.

Strict Security and no Branding
While IPL was attracting UAE, viewers, even recently, PCB was rather inspired to bring PSL home where it belonged to. No doubt it does, but it shouldn’t have been an excuse for low turnouts in UAE. Now when PSL still doesn’t fill up the empty stands, PCB again has many things to use as an excuse.

The reason for low turnouts in UAE was primarily because of the area and secondarily for the lack of marketing. If IPL was a brand outside India; in UAE and South Africa, it was because of its international image.

PSL happens behind closed doors and under strict security measures. Given the way the security situation turned up this year, it looks as if we might not be able to compete with other leagues and boards even after another 5 years. Under circumstances like ours, one just thanks God for another safe day in the stadium and the city.

One practical example of this dilemma was observed recently on Feb 5 in Quetta where PCB arranged an exhibition match between Quetta Gladiators and Peshawar Zalmi before the start of PSL Season 8. After one hour of play, the game was stopped and didn’t start again even after almost an hour. There was no news or update from the PCB or the two concerned franchises and the internet broke out with rumours of a blast in the Bugti Stadium. Later on, it was learnt that some locals had begun to throw stones in the stadium while there was a blast also – in a highly secure area of Quetta near the Police headquarters and entrance of Quetta Cantonment.

Poor Fan Experience in PSL Season 8
In Pakistan currently, it takes you almost 2 hours to enter the stadium after passing all the security measures and protocols. Citizens pay for the match but what they get is the unacceptable behaviour of security personnel and staff who fear a terrorist in every person visiting the stadium. Handsfree and umbrellas would be taken and thrown, WhatsApp and SMS from smartphones would be checked out and the police officer may even abuse you if you resist or argue. Not exaggerating, it happens in Pakistan even today.

When fans reach their destination in the stadium, they find themselves almost 50-80 meters away from the ropes and would hardly identify the players whose action and play is what they have desired to watch and pay for. Experience in stadiums is poor, but the rates and quality of food available in the stadiums are even more shocking.

PCB has put a totally blind eye to bringing some brands and trustworthy locals into the stadium. Markets and Food Streets around the stadium are closed, metro buses don’t take you anywhere near the stadium and the state makes sure everyone walks for at least 4 km before entering the stadium. Respect is the last thing a Pakistani fan can expect in this country.

Expensive Tickets and no Conveniences
Already there is record inflation in Pakistan. 100% increase in fuel, oil, wheat and daily-use commodities has deteriorated the public lifestyle and mood. PCB didn’t help improve this situation. PCB increased the rates of PSL Season 8 tickets and passes by almost 150% and a family trip to the National or Gaddafi stadium is nothing less than a trip to the Northern Areas of Pakistan. But what fans get is just disarray and disorganization.

“I’m writing this post to show how pathetic and unprofessional the PCB management acted today. I got a VVIP ticket of 12k which is the glass box on the top. However, they made us sit on the normal VIP seats which were 2900 rupees. We just got the complimentary snacks. I asked a few PCB management team members about it and they said we were late and they already filled the VVIP seats with other people who didn’t even pay for it. It was not only us, there were a bunch of people who paid 12k and got the same enclosure. Very unfair to pay this much amount and get this kind of treatment.”

https://twitter.com/iamMrSikandar/status/1626222750976344066
Copy from Voice of Customer Group means what we are getting in the label of VIP even in this enclosure view is totally disturbed with these janglaws as if people are in a zoo. Such a pathetic system of our stadiums.” A fan who watched Multan vs Quetta game in Multan Stadium wrote on social media.

Poor Stadiums and no Maintenance Work

PCB hasn’t been able to look after or improve the stadiums as well. The public of Islamabad and Rawalpindi always fills the Pindi Stadium but still, it has neither a roof nor seats. Other stadiums have both, but the seats are either old and broken or untidy and in poor shape. Now institutions of Pakistan seem to have failed so miserably that no construction or development would ever take place.

Stadiums have the capacity to place more seats in the long useless gaps between the ropes and seats. Big screens disturb the view and not everyone in the stadium is able to watch the action through them. These can be appropriately placed. Security should be tight but it should be arranged in a way that it won’t disturb public lives and match the experience.

Otherwise, with this much increase in ticket prices and soaring inflation and underdevelopment, the Pakistani middle class is not going to visit stadiums and stands would remain empty in PSL Season 8. An expensive ticket is an invitation to rich people who are not interested in Asian-dominated games like cricket and kabaddi. It’s the Pakistani middle class that can chant the slogans and fight over Babar vs Amir rivalries. Pakistani rich better apply for an American visa and spend at Tim Hortons to contribute to the making of a better historical event.
