Lahore, 15 August 2019:

Fourteen centrally contracted and six additional men cricketers have been invited to attend a pre-season camp, which will commence at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Lahore on 19 August. After two days of fitness testing, the 17-day conditioning camp will begin on 22 August and run until 7 September.

As the process for the appointment of the players support personnel has been initiated, former captain Misbah-ul-Haq, with the support of the NCA coaching staff, will craft the training programme and overlook of the camp until the recruitment process has concluded.

During the pre-season camp, the players will undergo fielding drills and net sessions, along with fitness and other cricketing activities.

The camp has been set up to prepare the players for a competitive and challenging domestic and international cricket season, which is expected to begin with the prestigious Quaid-e-Azam Trophy from 12 September.

Apart from 31 Quaid-e-Azam Trophy first-class matches and number of domestic white ball matches in relation to the National T20 Cup and Pakistan Cup One-Day Tournament, the Pakistan cricket team is scheduled to play six World Test Championship Tests, three ODIs and nine T20Is in the forthcoming season.

Azhar Ali will join the camp from the outset after completing his contract with English county Somerset. Babar Azam, Fakhar Zaman, Imad Wasim, Mohammad Abbas and Mohammad Amir have been exempted from the camp so that they can complete their contracts with English counties Somerset, Glamorgan, Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire and Essex, respectively. They will return to Pakistan in time to participate in the opening round matches of the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy.

The following comprise the 20-man contingent (in alphabetical order):

Centrally contracted: Abid Ali, Asad Shafiq, Azhar Ali, Haris Sohail, Hasan Ali, Imam-ul-Haq, Mohammad Rizwan, Sarfaraz Ahmed, Shadab Khan, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Shan Masood, Usman Shinwari, Wahab Riaz and Yasir Shah

Non-Contracted players: Asif Ali, Bilal Asif, Iftikhar Ahmed, Mir Hamza, Rahat Ali and Zafar Gohar

Non-participating centrally contracted players: Babar Azam, Fakhar Zaman, Imad Wasim, Mohammad Abbas and Mohammad Amir

Zakir Khan, Director - International Cricket, said: “This conditioning camp is of great significance. The players will undergo strenuous training sessions to prepare for a demanding season, which will see Pakistan spend 30 of their 42 cricket-playing days in Test cricket.

“Misbah ul Haq, who has been Pakistan’s most successful captain, understands the arduous demands of the format in this day and age. With the advent of the World Test Championship, the PCB wants Pakistan to turn up with their best red ball game when they face Sri Lanka in the two-match Test series at home.

“Ahead of the Sri Lanka series, these players will be a part of the initial rounds of what will be a highly competitive Quaid-e-Azam Trophy. So, this camp will further benefit them in gearing up for an exciting cricketing season.

“As five players are already playing active cricket in England and Wales, we have given exemptions to them but they have been advised to return to Pakistan in time to be available for the first round matches of the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy.”

Omnious signs - looks like nightmare of many Pakistani fans of having Misbah as a coach might come true.

Wouldn't put too much weight in Misbah being appointed with regards to the Head Coach role.

Good to see Zafar amongst those included.

I have a feeeling misbah will get an important post ar the pcb ,whether its the role of the head coach or cheif selector, only time wilp tell. In my opinion misbah will get the post of cheif selector.

Azhar Ali, Asif Ali, Bilal Asif, Iftikhar Ahmed and Rahat Ali ?

Who the hell picked the names for this camp ?

The great Wasim Khan is the best thing to happen to Pakistan cricket lool

He literally control everything in PCB, all the blame should go to him for absurd appointments.

Asif is close friend of Misbah, no wonder he got picked in the PSL by united and now this.

Looks like same TTF will be recycle again and again. How on earth Rahat, Bilal, Iftikhar keep coming back?

Look like Wasim Khan is just here for his 40 lakh

No Saud, Saad, Usman Salahuddin, M Irfan ( leg spinner )

Rahat is back
He will lead our bowling attack in Aus

hmmm, it looks like Misbah won't be getting the head coach job or batting coach.

I think either they will make him the conditioning or fitness coach, or give him an NCA post where he will be responsible for the fitness of the players.

Or i think this is part time till they recruit the full staff.

Btw have to give credit to waseem Khan. THey dont have coaches and still hiring, but they have not let that affect or delay the players coaching.

Wasim khan has continued the process of coaching and fitness while they are still hiring. This is a great stuff by him.

Z Gohar was outstanding in the past but I think he will need a lot of hard work to back to his best again because recently he was quite mediocre

It's Misbah written all over it; from the idea of a prolonged conditioning camp to the players selection. Brace yourselves, the guy is your next head coach

I knew Wasim was here for money when Haroon Rashid came up with a half baked plan of 8 regional teams being sponsored by department cricket and that idea was proposed to Imran Khan.

Those working in PCB are same old haggards, there is no change apart from Shafiq Papa. According to new consitution, there is no change of club voting and same old district system where regional and club politics rules and merit is no where to be seen.

Where the hell is mohammad hasnain?!

LOL PP blame game restarted after blaming Sarfraz and Inzi for the selected players, now Misbah is being blamed for the same players:inzi2

You devalue your own argument when you start discussing his salary, him being there for the money, etc.

He has been there for 6 months and you're surprised that everything hasn't been fixed yet, OK.

Shan (c)
Abid Ali
Haris Sohail
Babar Azam
Saad Ali
Asad Shafiq (should be discarded but they won't kick him)
Rizwan (wk)
Zafar Gohar
Yasir Shah
Shaheen Afridi
Abbas

Can we relax by the way? It is only a camp. Also, it will take a lot of time to make changes. Be patient. Why is PP so kneejerk and react so quickly?

MashAllah so stick with TTFs like Iftikhar Ahmed and Rahat Ali, but don't pick youngsters...

Usman Salahuddin, Saud Shakeel, Saad Ali, Rohail Nazir, Sameen Gul, Mohammad Hasnain, Ahsan Ali, Faheem Ashraf, Mohammad Nawaz and Umar Siddiq should all be on the radar for Pakistan's squads.

Where's all those who were rejoicing when inzi resigned? We will miss him big time.

Pakistan cricket will take 3-5 years to reap the rewards of the new structure, you guys need to chill out its only a training camp.

:))) :)))

Well said.

I seriously don't know how come the standard of posting here has come down to street level ignorant rhetoric. The hate mnongers take over every thread if they don't like someone.

Misbah is the fittest guy in decades from Pak, our most successful captain too, but he's heading this fitness camp and these guys are losing their minds. :)))

This immature hate monger group probably wanted Ijaz Ahmed or Wasti as the head of this fitness camp.

fear not

It is time for us MIsbah fans to reassemble. Pack your shields, we have to defend him. The war has just began.

Lets call all the other Misbah fans!!!

THe first counter attack that i will throw in.

Misbah is not a selector, so how can he select the players in this case. He is a camp Commander(like that title), and is probably given the players.

Bash the selectors

LOL PP blame game restarted after blaming Sarfraz and Inzi for the selected players, now Misbah is being blamed for the same players:inzi2

from now on, all the losses wont be because of the players, the captain, the selector or because of the coach.

The match ka mujrim will be the Camp Commandant living in Lahore NCA

At least we need to see some postives

Okay I get central contract players get to be part of NCA training camp but who decides the other six. How does Asif Ali get to this camp and not Saad Ali,Saud Shakeel, and Usman Sallaudin.

How on earth did asif ali make it and not saud shakeel. Pathetic. Hopefully this means shameless Misbah won't be becoming the head coach.

I don't know. But this isn't the squad for the Test series, so it hardly matters. Squads will be selected after first few rounds of QEA and hopefully the guys like Saud, Usman etc make an impression.

Since there is no selector in the picture right now, I'm sure the previous selection committee must have been asked about this before their departure. It's not such a big deal, either way.

It’s a big deal for players who aren’t selected. It is disheartening for these cricketers.

Easy for you to say this but these cricketers life depend on being recognised and encouraged.

When will these people learn, complete step backwards what are we doing!!!

Bilal Asif, Rahat Ali, Hasan Ali, Imam Ul Haq, Wahab Riaz should not be on this list.

Rather Haris Rauf, Saud Shakeel, Khushdil Shah, Naseem Shah, M Hasnain, Ahmed Shehzad should have been included

Depressing news, Misbah's role is not good for Pakistan cricket. Not unexpectedly likes of Rahat Ali and Asif Ali are back, wait for more non-deserving Misbah's friends will be back from back door.

Pakistan lost many tests over the last 12 months because their senior batsmen, Shafiq and Azhar couldnt buckle down and show they can ride out the tough periods.
I am sure this will be a good camp and certainly everyone will come out fit etc, but the mental frailties will still be there.
if you cant diagnose the problem accurately, you cant fix it.

Wasim Khan gets 40 lakh rupees per month for his British accent and decisions like these.

He gave up more money and a better life for this gig. Funny how you think taking this job was for money...guy was on route to replace Andrew Staruss as chief executive of ECB

Azhar Ali, Asif Ali, Bilal Asif, Iftikhar Ahmed and Rahat Ali ?

Who the hell picked the names for this camp ?

Ifthikar Ahmed, Bilal Asif, Rahat. You know who. ;)

The destroyer of Pakistan cricket is back with a bang. :misbah

Wasim Khan is trash and so is Mani. Man, only if Imran khan could keep his biases away, we could still have Sethi who has been the most capable PCB chairman to date.

He gave up more money and a better life for this gig. Funny how you think taking this job was for money...guy was on route to replace Andrew Staruss as chief executive of ECB

Says who? All speculations.

Hope someone goes to court against this because Misbah being appointed as head coach will be a huge breach of ethics and a conflict of interest

The sort of comment we hear from some of our well-known journalists - good to see they have fans here.

The thing is that. Why can't they simply hire a chief selector and make these decisions? He is at least accountable and we know who picked these guys. Mudasar, Zakir Khan or Misbah ul haq have no right to make these decisions behind close door.

First they awarded central contract without selection commitee being consulted(again Zakir Khan and Mudasar calling the shots) and now this. We thought naya PCB will be far more professional

Where's all those who were rejoicing when inzi resigned? We will miss him big time.

Inzi was doing more than a decent job... People will realise that when the next squad is announced... He gave chances to Usman , Saad, Asghar but didnt play them much... Now look at those youngster beauties in the list of non-contracted players, except zafar gohar and mir hamza all of them were those TTFs..

If MISBAH made head coach or selector, this team will regress faster so that Mickey n Inzi might even be recalled soon lol..

Azhar Ali, Asif Ali, Bilal Asif, Iftikhar Ahmed and Rahat Ali ?

Who the hell picked the names for this camp ?

Hahah Misbah who else?

Shan Masood, Asad Shafiq, Azhar Ali, Asif Ali and Rahat Ali (Especially) are Misbah Favorites.

Out of all the above I will only Keep Azhar Ali for Tests. But we are stuck with them if Misbah becomes coach.

This thread is so dramatic. It's a meaningless camp, who cares.

People need something to be outraged about lol. It isn't just going to be Misbah there. There are other batting, bowling, fielding, fitness coaches there. Its just a camp to work on players techniques and basics. People acting like this is some grand camp with strategy sessions for the World Cup.

Some absolute clowns posting in this thread, chief amongst them I think is a burner account of Najam Sethi.

This is merely a get together, players will be picked on performances in the domestic games.

Makes zero logic or sense to get Misbah ul Haq involved in this camp, he is neither an active player or a coach, the commandment task should have been given to the head of NCA or something. It looks like Misbah has made full advantage of his presence in the PCB Cricketing Committee

Players like Rahat Ali and Iftikhar Ahmed?
Oh come on...!
Rest I dont have a problem with.
Could have seen some fresh batters coming through though...especially middle order batters.

Shan
Abid
Imam

Azhar
Haris
Asad

.....not enough.

Why not the next great hype Saud Shakeel or Saad Ali or Salahuddin, Talat etc.

Hope someone goes to court against this because Misbah being appointed as head coach will be a huge breach of ethics and a conflict of interest
And if we go by BCCI logic, members of committee choosing the coach should not have any sort of association with PSL franchises to avoid any conflict of interest. Unfortunately here we have almost all the members having important posts in different PSL franchises

I don't get the hate for Misbah, if anything his presence around the team would be good. He is our most successful test captain and knows how to win Test matches.

Misbah isn’t a selector. Say he is a camp commandant, not sure what that is but it’s not selecting a squad.

QEA matches will have a bigger role in selections.

A pre-season camp isn't going to play much of a role, especially when there's no chief selector or coach under contract.

Based on?

Him being in the cricket committee is acceptable but he should be no way near head coach or selector roles.

Why shouldn't he be HC or Selector? If he applies and the Committee is convinced with his interview and plans for the team is best out of those interviewed then he should get the job. I don't understand why you're disqualifying someone out of pure hatred. Nobody, not you, not me, not anyone knows if he will be a good or bad coach. At this time we don't even know if he has even applied for the post. Everyone needs to get off their arm chair expertise and actually wait for any tangible news about who applied and who didn't.

How about the fact that he has played domestic cricket for 20 years? And stopped playing just recently a year ago.

He is more aware about players, problems, and ins and outs of domestic cricket than most others has no baggage like Moin, Qadir, Qasim have. And also has a reputation of being a straight-shooter and unbiased in his decision-making. I cant think of anyone else who would make a better chief-selector.

Because he's an inept tactician and talent identifier. He's gonna take us back to the 9th spot.

Bro, while i support Waseem Khan's decision after listening to his interview.

Please dont give the ** about how he left a better life and yadda yadda yaddaa.

Its human nature to be selfish, everyone is. Waseem Khan didn't decide to pack his bags and be patriotic, that is very irrational and illogical. And if he did that than i want such an irrational person removed from PCB.

He joined PCB because it was probably not only good pay but would also look good on his CV. Plus, he can go back to England after 2-4 years when he gets fired from here. But in mean time its good money and a good post for the CV.

ANd there is nothing wrong in that.

But the thing is, he seems to be a capable person, he has done alot of research which is why i support him. But he is not wrong for coming for a better career oppurtunity.

All this better life, leaving better oppurtunities for his love of Pakistan are just dumb statements.

You claiming to know what's truly in Wasim's heart and mind are making the "dumb" statements.

If you think a person takes a job just for the love of his country, than you are very naive. And if its true than that person is very naive.

There is always the personal motive. Everyone is selfish, everyone looks after his needs first. Its human psychic.

I think that's what hurts his candidacy.

He's going to get called out on nepotism as a chief selector. Just look at the reaction to some of his friends getting included in a pre-season camp.

Misbah is not the right decision. It has to be someone that's not in the same generation as the players.

Misbah is not the right decision. It has to be someone that's not in the same generation as the players.

Nothing about him suggests he will be biased. You can't say he will indulge in nepotism on a whim. And 'some of his friends' are regular fixtures in the Pakistan test side.

Multiple news outlets reporting that Misbah is likely to get dual roles as head-coach and chief-selector. Will be interesting to see if it materializes. Don't usually see PCB making these kind of out-of-the-box decisions. And correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think there's any team in the world that has centralized both these major roles under one person.

The only way it works is if they adopt the same model that South Africa has proposed. Misbah as head supremo with a team of specialist coaches under him. I have my doubts about it succeeding though.

Nothing about him suggests he will be biased. You can't say he will indulge in nepotism on a whim. And 'some of his friends' are regular fixtures in the Pakistan test side.

3/6 "non-contracted" players are conveniently his buddies from domestic cricket. It's already an ominous sign.

Misbah may be a good idea in 10-15 years depending on his resume but appointing him right now will be asking for trouble.

People think Misbah selected the squad for some reason although nothing of the sort was mentioned in the article.

Exactly.

Some of the haters here will jump on any opportunity to trash talk him.

Ignore, and enjoy Misbah being around our team now, good days are coming and we will start winning matches again. In Tests especially, we've forgotten how to do it.

His job as head of the camp here means people will also take fitness seriously. He's our fittest guy in decades with a great work ethic.

The pre-season camp selections don't mean much unless Misbah is hired.

I'll explain what I see.

Rahat Ali - friend, SNGPL teammate
Ifthikhar Ahmed - friend, SNGPL and Islamabad teammate
Bilal Asif - friend, vouched for his position in ODIs vs SL (literally quoted by chief selector Haroon Rashid at the time)
Zafar Gohar - Islamabad teammate
Asif Ali - Faisalabad and Islamabad teammate

Mir Hamza is the only pick without any known connections to Misbah.

Misbah is a quality person and cricketer (I don't think he does it out of malicious intent) but he has a soft spot for certain players. It's one of the reasons he welcomed so many older players and/or domestic teammates into his Test squads.

Not a great selection of players but it's just a training camp and hopefully the coaches will quickly recognise that some of these guys are just not good enough. I'd expect a different selection of players after the domestic season when they can better judge who's performing and who has actual potential.

For God's sake, please dont make Misbah a head coach or Chief Selector. This guy has no vision, no vision at all. We will be left with mediocre non performer oldies for near and distant future....

South Africa is almost finalizing the similar kind of model which they say is inspired of Football manager role. I think its a good initiative as “too many cooks spoil the broth” has been the case with a lot of cricket sides around the world.

Zafar Gohar is someone which everybody including myself was asking for.

Iftikhar Ahmed looked the best hitter of cricket ball from Pak in PSL and if you see few of his innings those were game changing ones and considering we need someone who can bat and hit big with the bonus of off spin as well, I cant see problem with that.

While Asif Ali has been tried by this management a lot of times as well so its not just because of Misbah while Rahat Ali has performed better than Mohammad Amir in UAE, he has better average than Amir in UAE tests.

Not sure what the problem with the names is as many are mentioning here. Personally I would have liked to see Khushdil Shah and Saud Shakeel as well if in the probables.

Iftikhar Ahmed, Asif Ali, Khushdil Shah, Sohail Akhtar and Umer Akmal are the best middle order hitters of the cricket ball we have so not sure who should have been there in that role.

For God's sake, please dont make Misbah a head coach or Chief Selector. This guy has no vision, no vision at all. We will be left with mediocre non performer oldies for near and distant future....

He achieved number 1 test ranking which unfortunately many visionaries couldnt.

Yes in LOIs team’s performances were horrible but one can easily compare the set of players in his era and emergence of youngsters and other players with major help from PSL.

Misbah also won couple of PSL’s as captain so I wont say he has no vision. While LOIs performances were poor in my opinion it was due to the lack of talent available at his disposal in that 2013-15 time. Not to forget even in that dark time on ODI cricket we won first ever ODI series in SA and beaten India as well in their home(Last tour by both the side’s on each other’s soil.

Thank god Zafar Gohar is on his radar. The one thing I do trust Misbah to get right is selecting spinners.

Yeah that is one way of looking at it. Seemed to be the case at the WC with Inzamam's regular presence
