Sadly the project was on hold during lockdown, but work has restarted. I fear it will not be finished on time
 
I just hope Peshawar is safe enough. I'm not too familiar with KPK but I know the past it was dangerous, perhaps it's improved.

Filling a stadium anywhere in KPK as a whole or in Peshawar is not even a slightest of worries, even a decent club match or domestic match witnesses people pouring in big numbers. People there are really passionate about cricket.

Capacity is around 20,000 at the moment of Arbab Niaz stadium and its being upgraded as well which might increase the total capacity. Further proposal to build another stadium in Peshawar is also under consideration which if finalized we might see in next few years.

Hopefully they can capacity to around 26-30 thousand I think 1 stadium should be okay not sure if they can use it in international thou is thier stil issue regarding terrisorm in peshwar

I think KPK at the moment is as safe as any other part and its the right time to have PSL matches there. In last 5-6 years dynamics of security have completely changed and 4 provinces of Pakistan are as safe to hold cricket matches as any other venue around the world.

Quetta will take some time but eventually become a venue as well in next few years hopefully.

PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has allocated Rs1.87 billion for construction of two sports stadiums in Peshawar, while the budget for the rest of sports activities in the whole province is Rs1.58 billion.

Both the government and people are so obsessed with cricket that nothing else matters for them apparently as the state of other sports, particularly the national sport hockey, is ever deteriorating due to lack of attention and funds. In the current budget, the KP government has allocated Rs27.5 million for hockey and other Olympic sports. On the other hand, Rs1.37 were allocated for Arbab Niaz Cricket Stadium Peshawar for bringing it to international standard in 2017. The project was to complete within three years, but it isn't despite the deadline coming near. Rs440 million have been spent on the project and the same amount will be spent again this year.

A proposal of building a cricket stadium at Hayatabad Sports Complex in Peshawar is also under consideration. The renovation and improvement of the sports complex will cost Rs500 million.

Why cricket is so popular?
Director Sports Reham Bibi, who is serving in Frontier College for Women and also served as coordinator with Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), said people of all age groups take keen interest in cricket and enjoy the sport. She said cricket is a professional sport, it gets good sponsorship and players earn well. She said duration of cricket is longer than other sports and due to increased sponsorship, the earning is even more.

Reham Bibi said KP has great talent in athletics, volleyball and hockey, but such players don't get fame, attention and earning as cricketers.

Hockey losing popularity
Anam from Peshawar, who is playing tennis on national level for last two years, told TNN that cricket is popular because it attracts money, celebrities, sponsorship and media. She said hockey is losing popularity gradually due to lack of attention. She said hockey can regain its lost glory if the government provides it enough funds and media provides it good coverage.

Karate champion Murad Khan said there is no dearth of talent in Pakistan, but different sports are losing relevance due to lack of any attention or patronage by the government.

Murad Khan from Peshawar said he won gold medal in the National Games in 2013 and then won another gold medal in Nepal in an international competition. However, he said, karate is also victim of the government lack of attention.

Sports that were once popular in KP
A local sports journalist, Zeeshan said Pakhtuns play every sport aggressively. He said audience take keen interest whenever there is a match of cricket between Pakistan and India.

Zeeshan said Pakistan was once unbeatable in squash as Jansher Khan and Jehangir Khan, both hailing from KP, won 555 matches consecutively. He believed that Pakistan lost interest in squash because this sport is not played in India there are no arch-rival type matches which are available in cricket. He said squash is also not affordable for every player because it costs more than other sports.

'We don't have heroes in football because of much higher standards in other countries, particularly in Europe and Latin America. Kabaddi and tent pegging were also popular in KP, but now we see cricket and cricket everywhere,' he said.

No money for foreign tours
Sports journalist form Bajaur Hanifullah said the National Hockey Federation has not enough money to send team on foreign tours.

He said squash and other indoor games are also victim of lack of attention. He said only two hockey stadiums in Lahore and Karachi are in better condition, while the rest are in poor state. He said football is the most famous sport in the world, but in Pakistan, investment on this sport is negligible.

All games, including hockey come under the mandate of the Directorate of Sports. KP Director Sports Asfandyar Khattak said Directorate of Sports is responsible for promoting sports and providing all facilities. He said there are over 1,000 sports ground in KP. He said the construction of stadiums, renovation and all other related expenditure is filled under the annual development program. He said Rs2.1 billion budget was allocated in KP last year and this year Rs1.58 billion budget has been allocated.

They need to get a move on with the renovation work. Work was being done at a rapid pace b4 lockdown then halted bug now started again.

The covid restrictions did slow it down but it was going at breathtaking speeds in pakistani terms.
 
CM for holding some PSL matches in Peshawar during next season

PESHAWAR: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Mahmood Khan Monday said the provincial government would make all out efforts to hold some matches of Pakistan Super League (PSL) Cricket Tournament 2021, in Peshawar.

While chairing a meeting of the Sports Department to review the possibilities of holding some of the next PSL matches in Peshawar, the chief minister said the civil work was in progress on the upgradation of Arbab Niaz Cricket Stadium Peshawar to develop it up to the required standard.

The meeting also reviewed the progress so far made on the upgradation projects of Arbab Niaz Cricket Stadium for the possible holding of the PSL matches.

The meeting was informed that the civil work on the upgradation of the stadium and work on the provision of the required facilities in the stadium was in progress.

However, the pace of work has been effected due to the prevailing coronavirus situation; and a period of six to seven month will be required to complete all the necessary arrangements in the stadium.

The meeting was attended by Advisor to the CM on Information Ajmal Wazir, Secretary Tourism and Sports Khushal Khan, Secretary Communication and Works Ijaz Hussain Ansaari, Special Secretary to the CM Masood Younas, Director General Sports Asfandyar Khattak, representatives of Finance and Planning Department and other relevant authorities.

Addressing the meeting, the chief minister said that promotion of sports activities in the province was one of the top priorities of the incumbent provincial government.

The government was taking result oriented steps under a comprehensive strategy devised in this regard.

The chief minister directed the relevant authorities of Sports and C&W Departments to make all out efforts to complete the civil work on the upgradation of stadium and provision of other allied facilities well in time, so that holding of some of the PSL matches in the stadium could be made possible.

Mahmood Khan also directed the authorities concerned to ensure uninterrupted provision of the required funds to accelerate the pace of civil work at Arbab Niaz Cricket Stadium Peshawar.

I hate to say it but I don't think the stadium is going to be ready in time. Even though the work was being done at a great pace, they lost a good 3 months due to Covid-19. Still hoping for the best and wish they pull it off.
 
Not a good idea. THe stadium is located inside the mohallas. Thus, its locality is quite dangerous.

Former Test cricketer, who still has a matchless record in the cricketing world Saqlain Mushtaq on occasion, said that "Arbab Niaz Stadium in Peshawar is a historically important Stadium and expressed his satisfaction with the way the work is going on." He also lauded the Chief Minister KP Mahmood Khan for taking keen interest in bringing Arbab Niaz Cricket Stadium and the most beautiful Cricket ground in Hayatabad Sports Complex at par with international standard, fully equipped with international need.

"I have so many memories associated with this ground both as a domestic cricketer and international cricketer and always loved to play here, having the support of the people, their cheering and their love," a jubilant Saqlain said.

Saqlain made his Test debut in Sept. 1995 against Sri Lanka at Arbab Niaz Stadium, Peshawar. He picked up four wickets at an average of 26.75 in the match, and accumulated nine wickets in the series from two Tests. The best facilities at Arbab Niaz Cricket Stadium are a testament to success, international matches will be held here easily, and it will be a great gift for the people here, Saqlain said. Saqlain has unmatched achievements for Pakistan as he has taken 13 Test five-wicket hauls with 3 Test tenfers (most 10-wickets in the match) and in ODI, he took seven five-wicket hauls. Saqlain was also selected as one of the Wisden Cricketers of the Year for 2000.

A statistical analysis conducted by Wisden in 2003 revealed Saqlain as the all-time greatest ODI spinner, and the sixth-greatest ODI bowler. Saqlain has the honor of being the fastest bowler to reach the milestones of 100, 150, 200 and 250 wickets in ODIs.

He was the first of only two spinners to have taken a hat-trick in an ODI, (the other being Abdur Razzak), and the second of only four bowlers to have taken two ODI hat-tricks (Wasim Akram, Chaminda Vaas and Lasith Malinga being the others), and the second of which was only the second hat-trick in a World Cup match.

He holds the record for the most wickets in a calendar year in ODIs-69 wickets in 1997. He is also second in this elite list with 65 wickets in 1996. A right-arm off break bowler, Saqlain played 49 Test matches and 169 (ODIs) for Pakistan between 1995 and 2004. He took 208 Test and 288 ODI wickets and also scored a Test match century as well, against New Zealand in March 2001. "It's really fascinate me the way the construction work is going on for earlier completion of the Arbab Niaz Cricket Stadium and initiatives have been taken for the up-gradation and bringing at bar the Cricket venue at Hayatabad Sports Complex, are really very key and good additions to Pakistan Cricket," Saqlain said during his visit to Hayatabad Sports Complex.

Nadeem Khan said that with the construction of Arbab Niaz Cricket Stadium Peshawar and KP would promote cricket in the country.

" Peshawar is a great city for hosting domestic and international cricket matches where there are many cricket fans and there is a lot of talent" "We are also trying to promote cricket in Peshawar," he said, adding, "the PCB is focusing on Under-13 and Under-16 cricket at the club level." He said that the PCB and the KP government are trying to hold some matches of the next edition of PSL in Peshawar and their visit is part of the overall support extended by PCB on the request of Chief Minister KP Mahmood Khan.

Earlier, DG Sports Asfandyar Khan briefed the PCB delegation along with the contractors of the Arbab Niaz Cricket Stadium. DG Sports Asfandyar Khan said the visit aimed to go forward with the guidance and consultation with the PCB so the venues of both Arbab Niaz Cricket Stadium and Hayatabad Sports Complex would be prepared accordingly. He also thanked the PCB delegation on behalf of the Chief Minister KP Mahmood Khan for time to time visits and inspecting the under construction venues.

I read KPK ADP 2020-21 document, it will never be ready for the next PSL.
 
Good idea to take the game to other places in the country besides Lahore and Karachi.

Bro, if you read the article you linked to, it says that Peshawar can't hold the PSL matches *this year*. This means that it can't hold the remaining PSL playoff matches for this year.

The article further says that the stadium should be ready by December InshAllah.

Thus, in theory, Peshawar should be ready to host PSL matches *next* year in February, which was always the main intention I gather. It also allows the KPK government enough time to put the appropriate security measures in place, to give international players the confidence to travel to Peshawar.

Provincial Health Minister Taimur Saleem Khan Jhagra said this while inaugurating three roads of the Regi Model Town here on Saturday.

He said a Sports Complex will be constructed over 350 kanals of land in Regi Model Town while Model Basic Health Units and primary schools had become operational. Regi Model Town would be encroachments free soon and he directed the concerned quarters to eliminate encroachments from it.

The agreement for the issuance of Sehat Health Cards was expected next week, while the capacity of medical teaching hospitals was being further enhanced, he added.

The minister said that steps had been taken to provide best healthcare facilities to the people.

Taimur Jhagra inaugurated three roads in Union Council Regi including 2 km Badizai Mian Khan Garhi Road, Ghulam Nabi Kali Road and RHC Regi Road. Area leaders, elders, party officials and workers were also present on the occasion.

He said that approval has been given for construction of a Modern Sports Complex over 350 kanals of land in Regi Model Town. The Sports Complex will be equipped with all modern sports facilities.

Similarly, Model Primary Health Center and Primary school have also been made functional. Work is also in full swing at a separate Grade Station for Regi Model Town.

Taimur Jhagra said that encroachments from the town have been eliminated while police and FC have been deployed for security.

He said that the fees of Hayatabad Sports Complex would be reduced for the citizens especially the youth so that they could participate in sports activities without any hindrance. Taimur Jhagra said that it is a good thing for the citizens of Peshawar that PSL matches will also be held at Hayatabad Cricket Ground, which will provide them with good entertainment.

The Provincial Minister said that all the public parks in Peshawar were being rehabilitated and renovated while making them usable for the disabled. He said that the Health Justice Card is a proud project of the PTI provincial government for public health for which an agreement with the insurance company was expected next week.

Bro, the article doesn't clarify if this is in reference to this year's remaining PSL games or next years tournament.

Am I correct in assuming that they are referring to making the Hayatabad Complex ready for this year's games?

To be honest its not clear - my assumption was that it was for remaining PSL 5 games but then we dont know if Arbab Niaz will be ready for next year or not.
 
Arab Niaz definitely will not be ready for PSL 6. The government still wants to hold matches in KPK and Hayatabad stadium will be upgraded for that reason.

I firmly believe every city should have two major stadiums. This will help reduce over reliance and wear and tear on one stadium alone.

It will also require lot of funds to maintain those two stadiums. India and Pakistan should build multi-purpose stadiums that can also generate revenue in off season(and no I don’t mean stadium to facilitate weddings Lol)
 
While expansion project of Arbab Niaz Cricket Stadium is in full swing at a cost of Rs1.37 billion, the coronavirus pandemic seems to have foiled the authorities’ plan to host some matches of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) beginning in February 2021.

However, authorities say they are trying to host PSL or at least to hold some of PSL matches at the stadium. The venue is an international cricket stadium constructed in 1984, the era when it was called Shahi Bagh Stadium as it touches the historical garden.

Speaking to The Nation, KP Director-General for Sports Asfandyar Khattak said that after completion of the project, the stadium would have a capacity of around 26,000 spectators while it would be NCA level cricket academy, with proper flood*lights as well.

It may be mentioned here that lack of floodlights was also one of the reasons that the venue was not consid*ered fit for international matches.

The KP sports director general said it might be completed by June 2021 because work got delayed due to issues including coronavirus pandemic. He said work on the project was stopped in February but now it had been resumed.

He said despite resumption of work there were transportation problems as mostly labour was from Lahore while the movement of iron and some construction material also hit snags.

“Imports are getting delayed as factories in Spain and other countries are closed due to coronavirus pandemic. In fact, we have planned to host PSL at Arbab Niaz Stadium, but the corona situation delayed things,” the official added.

Stadium to be upgraded for PSL

PESHAWAR: The provincial planning and development department has sanctioned Rs500 million to upgrade the Hayatabad Cricket Stadium so that it can host matches of the Pakistan Super League (PSL). With renovation works on the Arbab Niaz Stadium progressing slowly, the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Sports Department has decided to upgrade the Hayatabad cricket stadium to host PSL matches. The money will be used to upgrade the dressing room, the referees’ rooms, media hall, control centre, media expert studios, radio broadcasting rooms, press hall, VIP seating and camera stands at the stadium.

Better off hosting matches at a half finished Arbab Niaz Stadium IMO. As long as they can get the seats in they could play day games. Better than wasting money on this Hayatabad ground which is nothing more than a club ground.

Interesting. Why so much investment in Peshawar?

Sounds like a good small venue, this second one. Maybe they will help develop more of the talent from this region.

Nope, this is a good decision.

Hayatabad is much more modern and cleaner peshawar and having a stadium there wont be a security risk.

The current stadiums location is too risky. Its in the middle of a mohalla.
 
Stupidity. If you don’t have one venue completed in time for a tournament you just don’t go about starting to develop another venue. You utilise a venue that already exists. This decision reeks of political pandering.
 
PESHAWAR (APP) – Director General Sports Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Asfandyar Khan Khattak has said that Peshawarites would soon hear news about holding Pakistan Super League-6 edition matches.

He was briefing the media along with a delegation of Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) here at Hayatabad Sports Complex.

The PCB high level delegation was headed by Director International Cricket in Pakistan Zakir Shah, General Manager Pakistan Cricket Board Junaid Zia, Col. Asif Mehmood, Director Security and Anti-Corruption, Senior General Manager Admn Logistic Asad Mustafa, Col. Ashfaq Ahmad, Senior General Manager Admin and HR, Shakeel Khan (Manager Media), Manager Marketing Mansoor Manj.

The delegation visited the Hayatabad Sports Complex Cricket Stadium and discussed arrangements for possible PSL matches there as well as discussed the provincial government’s conversion project of such stadium into an International Cricket Stadium.

DG Sports KPK Asfandyar Khattak and Director PSL Mir Bashar Khan briefed the delegation about the up gradation of Stadium and about the arrangements in accordance with PSL matches.

The delegation was told that Chief Minister Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Mahmood Khan, taking keen interest in the matter and had recently approved a grant of Rs. 500 million for upgrading of the Stadium well before the commencement of PSL-6 in February next year.

DG Sports Asfandyar Khan disclosed that PDWP meeting Chaired by Chief Minister KP Mahmood Khan approved PC-II of Rs 500 Million for Hayatabad Sports Complex Project for upgrading cricket ground on requirements of PCB for PSL matches.

The new construction work includes players’ lounge, dressing rooms, media boxes, hospitality boxes, camera stands, enhancing the ground spectators’ capacity with seating facilities and installation of a commercial screen.

The delegation presented suggestions to the Directorate of Sports about the upgrade of the Stadium.

DG Sports Asfandyar Khattak acknowledges the PCB Chairman Ehsan Mani efforts for promotion of cricket activities in the province.

He said that Chief Minister Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Mahmood Khan was very keen to convert Hayatabad Cricket Stadium into an international Cricket Stadium and had approved Rs. 500 million besides 400 million more fund for Arbab Niaz Cricket Stadium.

He said the project would cast a total Rs. 750 million and would be able to hold international matches.

He informed that the government has also given approval for a bigger Cricketing Stadium to be constructed in Kamal Valley, which will have the facilities of cricket academy like National Cricket Academy style, swimming pool, and construction of multi-purpose gymnasium for indoor games, Tartan Track for Athletics and seven stars players’ hotel facilities inside one wall.

He said that the provincial government and the PCB were trying to make the Cricket Stadium of international standards and the project worth Rs 1.35 billion of upgrading of Arbab Niaz Cricket Stadium was underway.

Such project will be a gift for the people that will host PSL and International matches in Peshawar, Asfandyar said.

He said that efforts were being made to hold PSL matches in Peshawar and there would be good news soon in this regard.

About the chances of the matches, he said, all possible steps have been taken with the aim to have PSL and other international matches of cricket in Peshawar.

The delegation also visited gym, cricket academy, wickets, warm-up ground and other places and made suggestions to Director General Sports to bring the ground up to international standards.

Other issues including security at the ground were also discussed. Accompanied by the delegation, Asfandyar Khan said before this delegation Chairman PCB Ehsan Mani had visited Arbab Niaz Cricket Stadium in Peshawar, star-cricketers Saqlain Mushtaq also visited the cricket ground to develop it as world-class facility.

He said that Chief Minister KP Mahmood Khan has provided full support and he is working day and night for the promotion of sports activities. He said, soon after completion of both the projects, it would help in bringing international cricket to Peshawar

Should have upgraded the Hayatabad stadium to 25k in 1st place. It was stupid of KP govt to invest huge amounts of money in the place which is a security risk.

Totally agreed, what they can do now, is to re appropriate the allocated funds of Hayatabad Stadium upgradation to ABBOTABAD Stadium. It ll be more rational and worth investing.

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has expressed its reservations, in terms of facilities and security, regarding the Hayatabad Sports Complex that is supposed to host Pakistan Super League (PSL) next season.

However, the provincial government has claimed that the reservations will be addressed while the stadium will be prepared within the scheduled time.

The venue was selected for future PSL matches after the Arbab Niaz Stadium’s rebuilding process could not be completed on time. PCB director cricket Zakir Khan, along with seven officials of the board, made an official to the site in order to gauge its progress, where the visiting team was briefed about the stadium.

The team pointed out the lack of international standard facilities in the stadium, high-rise buildings in the vicinity of the stadium and security reservations. DG sports directorate Asfandyar Khattak claimed that they are trying to make the venue an international-level sports complex.

The provincial government has recently released Rs.400 million grant for the project. Khattak, while talking to media personnel on Wednesday, revealed that PCB Chairman Ehsan Mani was interested in bringing the PSL to Peshawar.

The PCB is in constant contact with the provincial government. Prime Minister Imran Khan is also interested in the venture and the people of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa will soon be able to enjoy international cricket in the region.

Work has stopped on Arbab Niaz Stadium due to a lack of funds. Will this Stadium ever be completed???
 
I know Hayatabad stadoum is being renovated as well but that stadium deseeved to be a 2 tier. Arbab Niaz stadium is in such a bad locality, I guess due to lack of space they couldn't have proper 2 tier stadium with ground seats views being obstructed by pillars. Extremely poor planning
 
I recently saw the pictures of the Arbab Niaz Stadium and I am surprised that nobody from PCB has noticed that location of Stadium is too risky from the security point of view. There are too many buildings too close to the stadium.

KPK government should have built a new stadium in any other area of Peshawar or they should upgrade the above mentioned Hayatabad Stadium, which looks better than Arbab Niaz, location wise.

We shouldn't take any risk. God forbid if one more incident happens, I doubt we will see cricket in Pakistan in our lifetime.

I know 500M is not a lot but I think at the end of the day its a waste of money since the stadium is unlikely to be used once Arbab Niaz is fully-functional. Instead of wasting money here they should consider putting up floodlights in Arbab Niaz.

On a side-note, Arbab Niaz under construction is looking eerily similar to the giant car park Feroz Shah Kotla.

The provincial government’s hopes of hosting matches of the upcoming season of the Pakistan Super League in Peshawar were dashed on Wednesday after the sport's regulator deemed facilities in the city as unfit.

Initially, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) had announced that it will host some matches of the popular cricket tournament in the western city, with the city and the province represented through the culturally named and hugely successful Peshawar Zalmi. However, with the main cricket stadium in the city, Arbab Niaz Stadium had been deemed as unfit to host a match after it failed to meet the standards listed by the International Cricket Council (ICC).

A massive project was undertaken by the provincial government to revamp the stadium. However, due to the slow pace of work on the mega project, the government struggled to convince PCB.

As an alternative, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) Chief Minister Mahmood Khan directed to launch a plan to convert the cricket stadium in Hayatabad into a facility which can host the matches. The government also allocated Rs500 million for the purpose and work started on a war footing. However, the novel coronavirus (Covid-19) affected the pace of projects.

The pace and quality of the project were reviewed by a high-powered team from the PCB last month. In light of the committee’s report, the PCB has now decided not to proceed with matches in either venue in Peshawar for the upcoming PSL season.

The board’s decision has also been formally communicated to the provincial government.

When contacted, PCB’s head of media Samiul Hassan said that very little time is left to complete preparations for the next PSL season, and with the stadiums still incomplete, matches cannot be staged in Peshawar.

Confirming that the PCB’s decision has been communicated to Peshawar, he explained that they have to inform the cricket managing bodies of the countries from where international players are coming about the venues and cities where matches can be played. Further, he said that they have to comply with ICC regulations apart from conducting security and other assessments.

Despite repeated attempts, K-P Sports Director General Asfandyar Khattak could not be contacted.

Special games

Meanwhile, the provincial government has decided to organise special games in the province later this week featuring 47 different fields in which some 700 specially-abled athletes are expected to participate.

This was disclosed during a high-level meeting of the K-P Sports and Youth Affairs department on Wednesday which was chaired by Chief Minister Mahmood Khan at the CM Secretariat in Peshawar.

K-P Sports Secretary Abid Majeed, Senior Member Board of Revenue, Principal Secretary to CM Shahab Ali Shah, Malakand division commissioner, Swat Deputy Commissioner Saqib Raza and other relevant high officials attended the meeting.

Briefing the meeting about developmental schemes in the sports sector, officials said that an indoor gymnasium will be established for special women athletes in all divisional headquarters for which a project has been approved under the annual development programme (ADP).

Under the scheme, all prerequisites for the establishment of an Rs99 million indoor gymnasium in Swat have been completed. It was further informed that a cricket stadium with allied facilities will be established in Kalam for which land is being acquired.

To promote sports activities, a sports complex will also be established in Swat. CM Mahmood directed the relevant authorities to expedite work on the projects to boost sports activities in the province. The timely completion of all schemes to this effect was imperative, he added.
