LAHORE: Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) Chief Operating Officer Subhan Ahmed on Friday wrote a letter to Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) announcing that the Rs10 million loan given by the country’s cricketing body cannot be waived off as a grant.

Three days ago, PCB Chairman Shaharyar Khan said in a press conference that PHF wants to write off the loan given in the year 2000 and they have discussed the matter during a Board of Governors’ (BoG) meeting and asked the Inter Provincial Coordination ministry for advice.

However, now the cricket board has decided it cannot write off the loan as grant-in-aid. “The matter was deliberated in detail in a BoG meeting held in Lahore on November 8, and it was decided that the loan cannot be written-off as grant-in-aid,” said Subhan Ahmad in the letter.

PCB asks PHF to return Rs10m loan

Further, PCB has urged PHF officials to hold talks on the method and timelines for repayment of the loan.

Meanwhile, PHF Secretary Shahbaz Ahmad Senior told Express News that the federation will look into the matter after concluding current meetings in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

Last month, the cricket board had asked PHF to return the loan that it gave to the latter under the chairmanship of General (Retd) Tauqir Zia. The amount was given to the hockey team which was due to participate in the Sydney Olympics in the aforementioned year. However, PCB later revealed that it was a loan and the PHF would have to return it.

Current management not responsible for ‘irregularities’ committed in past: PHF

Officials from both sides first met to resolve the issue on March 10, 2011 at the National Cricket Academy where it was mutually agreed that hockey federation would return this amount in instalments.

Although the number of installments was not agreed at that time, but PCB sent another letter on January 10, 2012 in which they suggested that there should be at least 10 installments to clear this amount.

“We request PCB to declare this loan of Rs10 million as a grant like Bangladesh, where government has announced a policy which pushed Bangladesh Cricket Board to give 5% of their income to the national game,” said PHF Secretary Shahbaz Senior previously told The Express Tribune.

PHF is liable for this loan but given the shape PHF's in, the govt needs to step in.

Lol cricket is already struggling for revenue, PCB goes begging to ECB and ICC for help, good move by PCB to neglect it. Cricket is more important.

Trouble in Pakistan: PCB slammed for asking hockey federation to return loan amount

The PCB has come under fire after asking the cash-strapped Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) to return a loan of 10 million rupees it was given in 2000 to send the national team to the Sydney Olympics.

The chief operating officer of the PCB Subhan Ahmad has written a letter to his counterpart in PHF asking him to make arrangements to return the 10 million rupees either in two instalments or in full.

The PCB's move to demand the money back from the PHF at a time when the national sport is facing a financial crunch has been roundly criticised by some former players and critics.

The criticism has come as the PCB this week, at its general body meeting, wrote off an amount of 1.7 million due from former Pakistan captain Mohammad Yousuf as legal fees and also approved an amount of 6.5 million rupees for the medical treatment of chairman Shaharyar Khan who recently underwent a heart surgery in London.

"The PCB spends millions extravagantly on its officials going abroad and other unnecessary costs but it can't write off the loan to PHF which governs our national sport," former Test player Jalaluddin said.

PHF secretary Shahbaz Ahmed said he had requested the PCB to try to convert the loan into a special grant or allow it to pay back in installments as presently the PHF didn't have enough funds to even meet its international commitments.

"The money was given to the federation 16 years ago but the PCB is now insisting on its return and we don't have this money to spare as we are still awaiting release of funds from the government,"
he added.

The money was given to the PHF before the 2000 Olympics on the orders of the former PCB chief Lt General (retd) Tauqir Zia.

The PCB remains the richest sports body in Pakistan and is not reliant on grants or funds from the government or the Pakistan Sports Board but even it has asked the ICC to set up a special fund for Pakistan cricket.

PHF WANTS PCB TO WAIVE OFF RS10MN LOAN

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) on Tuesday said it wanted the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to waive off the Rs 10 million loan which it took in the year 2000, citing inability to payback the amount.

Talking to APP, PHF Secretary Shahbaz Ahmad Senior said that PCB had recently written a letter to the federation demanding to return of the loan.

"Earlier, PCB had also waived off loans of Shoaib Muhammad (Rs 0.3 million) and Muhammad Yousaf's (Rs 0.7 million)," he claimed adding then why PCB could not waive off the federation loan.

He said Rs 10 million was not such a big amount for the board.

It may be mentioned here that PCB wants PHF to return the amount in installments.

Although the number of installments is not agreed, but PCB wants to clear this amount in at least 10 installments.

While, PHF wants PCB to convert the Rs 10 million as a grant like Bangladesh, where government has announced a policy which pushed Bangladesh Cricket Board to give 5 per cent of their income to the national game.

Good. They are not entitled to help PHF, it's not their duty.

Hockey is dead anyway. The PCB deserves it's money and there is a world of a difference between $1 million and $10 million rupees.

lack of anything..the players are practically volunteers..its a disgrace..with a bit of funding they could be back in the top five or six..But alas..we have the infrastructure (granted it needs updating) but with some smart moves and some cash we can turn things around very quickly..

Hockey has been dying slowly in subcontinent ever since AstroTurf became mandatory.

I thought the PSL earned the PCB some decent cash.

Whats happened lately that they are struggling for cash?

Destroying cricket, these idiots.

I also feel that PCB is a bit too unimaginative when it comes to making revenues. Always wait for other countries to lead the way before they do anything.
