PCB rejects Danish Kaneria's appeal to remove his life ban and asks him to approach ECB [Post#119]

Please Danish, put up or shut up. Your lack of clarity is just ruining Pakistan’s image, which obviously you never thought about before fixing.

So, all this drama you have been doing so far and siding with the bigger dramay baaz aka Akhtar...that has been adding extra sheen to country's reputation, right?
 
The majority has no right to tell a minority how he/she should think or feel.

We are seeing that a lot all around the world.

In Pakistan, people out of their good intentions, do sometimes try to persuade minorities to convert.

Hate the dismissive comments on this forum. Yes he admitted to match fixing but that doesn’t mean everything he says is a lie. He may be telling the truth or he may be lying, but there is a need for him to be heard.
 
Banned cricketer Danish Kaneria on Tuesday sought help from the Prime Minister of Pakistan Imran Khan to help in his rehabilitation while accusing the country's cricket board of "sleeping in his case". (More Cricket News)

The leg-spinner is serving a life ban for spot-fixing. He was charged for encouraging former Essex team-mate Mervyn Westfield to concede 12 runs during an over of a one-day game against Durham in 2009.

In a series of tweets, the 39-year-old said that his case is not taken up the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) because he's a "proud Hindu".

Expressing his desire to take up a coaching role, Kaneria wrote that he will soon share the details of his correspondence with the PCB.

Earlier, Kaneria claimed that there were few Pakistan players who targetted him for being a Hindu during his time with the national team.

In 61 Test matches, Kaneria took 261 wickets - a figure only bettered by Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis and Imran Khan. He also played 18 ODIs for Pakistan, claiming 15 wickets.

He last played for Pakistan in a Test match against England at Nottingham in August, 2010.

PCB has a clear case to answer.

When you have rehabilitated ALL known fixers and cheaters known to mankind since time eternal, including of the most egregious kind, then there is a precedence set.
 
The difference between Kaneria and other fixers is that Danish was banned by the ECB, and the PCB had agreed to abide by their decision back then.

Of the convicted Pakistani fixers, the only two who have been convicted of trying to bribe other cricketers to fix are Saleem Malik and Danish Kaneria.

Butt, Amir and Asif did no such thing: it is on tape that Mazhar Majeed corrupted them.
 
Danish Kanerias allegations of no support at all are completely unfounded. He was supported by the senior sports journalists in Geo, the Karachi cricketers like Rashid Latif, Moin Khan, Basit Ali who pleaded with the PCB and ICC on his behalf and the PCB even privately reached out to him and advised him to confess his guilt and accept a lenient punishment but he refused all those years and embarrassed all his supporters in the end after confessing his guilt
 
This loser’s act has been an insult to the struggle of minorities who are actually facing problems
 
Its very strange that he is targeting the PCB... from what I understand, its an ECB ban/sanction. The PCB has no incentive to go out of their way to appeal to the ECB on Kaneria's behalf

Tbh the PCB offered to help him under the condition he mans up, accepts his guilt and a lesser punishment. Kaneria chose to ignore the offers and to fight against the ECB on his own, exhaust his life savings, he wanted the PCB to fight on his behalf but hindsight shows the PCB was absolutely correct in distancing themselves from him knowing full well how blatantly guilty he was.

Kaneria's poor decision making is solely responsible for where he finds himself today. He didn't accept his guilt at the right time and later on chose to confess at the worst possible time.
 
I am now coming around to another pov.

While earlier I had nothing but contempt for the guy, the more this goes on the more it seems Kaneria has a case. Sort of.

You're got hardcore convicted offenders like Amir playing international cricket. You've got that black spot in the game Butt playing domestic and threatening to play international.

You've got Sharjeel coming back.

Please don't tell me these are different cases, etc. Ultimately, whatever the case, it's very clear that there's no clear policy.

So we are to judge crime and punishment by when a person admits guilt? How about Butt? What's the right time for accepting guilt for this guy? Why is this guy even playing domestic? How is forgiveness applicable to him but not Kaneria?

England case, pakistan case, PCB, ECB - These are quibbles. The fact is that a corrupt Kaneria is exposing Pakistan's singularly corrupt and hypocritical system.
 
Just like Amir ultimately betrayed Pakistan with his effete and self seeking ways after they invested so much in him, sometime I think you know what - Pakistan really deserve Amir and Sharjeel and Butt.

Play them all - but some of you guys always forget- that a man who cheats his country once will always cheat it one way or another.

I agree. They are just a different category of corrupt than Danish.
 
i think the issue is the ECB banned Danish for life, PCB have as such distanced themselves, if they go against the ecb how many people will be on here complaining about professionalism etc. it would have been a lot easier to turn around had the PCB issued his ban. One thing i will say is i have met Danish personally, i have had discussions with him in the past when their were murmurs of spot fixing and what not, and he was very blaise to say the least, like he was almost untouchable, the things he had to say about PCB were not nice aswel, so how come he has changed his tune now that money has dried up?
 
He is not making friends in Pakistan with his constant sniping.

So is his argument that players from minority communities may not be getting equal chances?

Or is it what Shoaib Akhtar initially claimed, i.e., that someone/people in the team refused to eat with him?

Or is it that Shahid Afridi "treated him badly?"

Because the topics are all quite distinct and each has its own implications.
 
Former Pakistan cricketer Danish Kaneria, who was presently serving a life ban after admitting to his involvement in the 2009 spot-fixing scandal, urged Pakistan Cricket Board to give him a second chance. Kaneria admitted that he won't be able to play for Pakistan but expressed his desire in imparting the art of leg-spin deliveries to the youth of Pakistan.

Kaneria, in an exclusive interview with India TV, also explained how he has been ignored by the board owing to his religion and put forth the double standards shown by the board in dealing with Salman Butt, Mohammad Amir and Mohammad Asif who were accused in the 2010 Lord's scandal.

Kaneria said, "I have accepted my mistake. I am a human I made a mistake. I am proud to have played for Pakistan but I want a second chance from the board. I can no longer play on the cricket field but I definitely want to teach the skills of leg-spin to the youth of Pakistan."

He said, "I miss this game very much. As a Hindu cricketer in Pakistan, I have no support even from the board."

Talking about the difference in treatment of players banned in Lord's scandal to his spot-fixing scandal, Kaneria said, "If this is not bias, what is. On one hand you end the ban of players like Amir, Salman Butt and Asif. Even Amir is given a chance to return to international cricket but in my case the board does nothing. I also spoke to several top officials of the board but they all dismiss it as my personal matter. If not this bias, what else? Or you can say that I am a Hindu cricketer so that does not help me here."

Danish Kaneria made his international debut for Pakistan in the Faisalabad Test against England in 2000. Danish played a total of 61 Tests for his team in which he took 261 wickets at an economy rate of 3.07. In Test cricket, he has taken 15 five-wicket hauls and two ten-fers. He is, in fact, the country's fourth-highest wicket-taker in Test cricket, after Danish Imran Khan (362), Wasim Akram (414) and Waqar Younis (373).

Apart from this, Danish has also played 18 ODIs for Pakistan picking a total of 15 wickets for Pakistan.

I am entirely sympathetic to Hindus trying to make their way in Pakistan.

However Danish got past those barriers and was allowed to play comfortably (at least from the PCB, no idea about how other players treated him). He was then banned for fixing. So why is he blaming the same board that supported him?

At this stage, like he mentioned in multiple interviews, he is struggling for cash. It is very clear that he is enjoying the YouTube revenue and guest appearances on Indian news channels.
 
After former South Africa captain Graeme Smith, tainted Pakistan leg-spinner Danish Kaneria too backed former India captain Sourav Ganguly to become the next ICC president. Kaneria, who is currently serving a life ban for spot-fixing during an English County game, said he would appeal to the ICC again if Ganguly becomes its chief and he is certain he would get a better response from cricket’s parent body.

“Yes I will appeal (to Ganguly) and I’m sure ICC will help me out in every way possible,” Kaneria was quoted as saying by India TV when asked about whether he will appeal to ICC if Ganguly becomes its president.

Kaneria who took 261 Test wickets for Pakistan - a figure only bettered by Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis and Imran Khan, was banned for spot-fixing in 2012 while representing Essex. The leg-spinner had initially denied the charge but in 2018, he finally confessed.

Kaneria said Ganguly was a terrific cricketer and he can be an ideal candidate for the ICC chief’s role.

“Sourav Ganguly has been an excellent cricketer. He understands the nuances. There is no better candidate than him for the ICC president’s role.”

“Ganguly has led India quite well and after that MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli have carried on. He is currently the BCCI president and I believe he can take cricket forward he becomes ICC chief,” Kanerai added.

Kanerai further added he won’t even need the Pakistan Cricket Board’s support to become the ICC president.

“Ganguly has a strong case for himself. I don’t think he will even need PCB’s support,” he said.

“The president of the ICC now becomes a very key position in terms of how the game can progress and progress at the right level. It would be great to see a cricket man like Ganguly to get into the role of the ICC president. That will be good for the game. He understands the game, he has played at the highest level and he is respected. That is going to be an interesting time for international and it is going to be a great appointment,” Smith had said.

With there being chances of Ganguly’s term as the BCCI president ending in July if the Superme Court doesn’t allow an extension, there are reports of the former India captain replacing Shashank Manohar as the next ICC president.

NEW DELHI: Former Pakistan spinner Danish Kaneria on Sunday said that he wants to groom spinners in the country and has requested the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to rope in former players to hold respectable positions within the board.

In an interaction with ANI, Kaneria said the PCB should really look to rope in former players to groom the budding talent in the country.
"PCB should really think about it. I would like to request PCB to get more former cricketers involved in their setup, at least look to get those players involved who have played 30-40 Test matches for Pakistan. These former players can really help out in the academies and they can shape up some budding talent," Kaneria told ANI.

"Give chances to cricketers. Recently PCB appointed Saqlain Mushtaq as Head of International Player Development. It is a very good sign. Saqlain is a really experienced guy and he will help all the players," he said.

"The spinners are reducing in number in Pakistan. That is why I want to clear my name and help the spinners in the country. I would like to work with them to shape their career and I would like to give Pakistan quality leg-spinners once again," he said.

Kaneria was found guilty of spot-fixing while playing for English club Essex and was banned from the sport.

Former Pakistan pacer Shoaib Akhtar had also said earlier that he cannot understand as to why the PCB does not bring in former players to hold respectable positions within the board.

He had cited the example of India which brought in Rahul Dravid to coach the U-19 and India 'A' side.

Kaneria played 61 Tests and 18 ODIs for Pakistan, managing to scalp 276 wickets across both formats. He last played for Pakistan in 2010 as he played the Test match against England at Nottingham.

This is a non-starter, the PCB has no choice but to bind itself to ECB's Lifeban as per the ICC rules and regulations. Kaneria should be focusing on making amends with the ECB
 
I'm starting to think this saga is good for Pakistan. Guys like Danish and Salman can whine all they want. They is a great lesson to our youngsters not to fix lest you end up as pathetic as these two.

Danish should not be allowed anywhere near our impressionable young bowlers.

Why doesn't he appeal to the organisation that banned or using religious victimisation blackmail against PCB acceptable now.

Pakistan Cricket Board was approached by Mr Danish Kaneria and Mr Saleem Malik on unrelated and separate matters. After carefully reviewing and studying both their requests, the PCB has responded to the two former cricketers.

The synopses of the responses are:

Danish Kaneria (rehabilitation programme)

• You were banned for life by the ECB’s Cricket Discipline Commission after it was established that you had ‘knowingly induced or encouraged Mervyn Westfield not to perform on his merits in the Durham match’

• You subsequently challenged the decision before the Appeal Panel of the Cricket Disciplinary Commission, which was upheld. Then, you appealed before a commercial bench of the High Court in London, which was dismissed. Then, you appealed before the Court of Appeal (Civil Division), which was rejected

• The PCB’s rehabilitation programme is offered to players upon conclusion of the respective periods of ineligibility and not for players who are serving life bans

• The life ban was imposed by the ECB and upheld by all ICC Members as per Article 9 of the ICC/PCB Anti-Corruption Code, and the only way it could have been overturned was by way of appeal, an avenue which have already been explored

• Article 6.8 of the ECB Anti-Corruption Code, which is applicable in this case, clearly states only the chair of the anti-corruption tribunal, which has imposed a period of ineligibility on a player, had the discretion to permit the player to participate

• As such, you are advised to approach the ECB as per Article 6.8 of the ECB Anti-Corruption Code

The message to crooked Danish- get lost and appeal to the ECB

If you look into it objectively, Kaneria's crime is much less than likes of Butt, Amir etc. Kaneria never fix when playing for Pakistan like others.

Agreed that ECB banned him but rather than saying 'Go and find your way with ECB', PCB could have used their diplomacy and worked with ECB to see if his ban could have been reduced. The same PCB who went out of their way to fast track Amir, allowing Butt to play in PSL again etc.

Its a clear case of discrimination against Kaneria.
 
Lol, Kaneria is pretty much screwed. The ECB will demand that he pay back atleast $500,000 in legal costs to them without which they will not even speak to him whereas Kaneria does not have that kind of money. There is a reason why he is desperately approaching the PCB for help.

The PCB actually told Kaneria to confess numerous times from 2010 to 2013 so that they can then mediate with the ECB to have his sentence lowered but Kaneria refused and burn't all his bridges. The PCB can't do much when the ECB is the one who has banned him and by ICC rules, regulations PCB has no choice but to uphold the ECB ruling.

Kaneria will have to repay the ECB $500,000 in legal expenses (money which he does not have), if he wants any chance of goodwill from them.

Pakistan Cricket Board's decision to reduce Umar Akmal's three-year ban to 18 months hasn't gone down well with Danish Kaneria. The former spinner has opined that his pleas are being ignored due to background and religion. Kaneria is only the second Hindu to represent Pakistan. His unclue Anil Dalpat was the first Hindu to play Test cricket for Pakistan.

Kaneria has often appealed against his ban. Responding to the 39-year-old earlier this month, PCB had asked him to approach England Cricket Board. Kaneria was banned by the ECB for spot-fixing while he was playing for Essex.

PCB's decision to reduce Akmal's ban did surprise many as he had accepted being approached by the bookies ahead of this year's PSL and as per Justice (retired) Fazal-e-Miran Chauhan, he neither showed any remorse nor he sought any apology for his actions. As a result, the PCB banned him for three years.

Akmal isn't satisfied with PCB reducing his ban and is planning to challenge the board's decision. "I am thankful to the judge for listening to my lawyers properly. I will decide about the remaining sentence and try to get it reduced further. For now I am not satisfied and will consult my lawyers and family how to take this ahead. There are many players before me who made mistakes and just look at what they got and what I got. So all I say right now is thank you very much," he said

Akmal will be allowed to make a comeback to competitive cricket in October 2021. Hence, will be available for selection in for 2022 T20 World Cup and 2023's 50-over World Cup. Akmal hasn't played for Pakistan since October 2019.

Banned leg-spinner Danish Kaneria has filed a petition in the Sindh High Court seeking permission from the Pakistan Cricket Board to allow him to undergo its rehabilitation programme for players found guilty of corruption.

Kaneria was banned for life from all cricket by the English and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) in 2012 on two charges for his role in spot-fixing attempts in the English County Championship pro league matches in 2009.

In a hearing presided over by Judge Muhammad Ali Mazhar of the Sindh High Court in Karachi on Wednesday, Kaneria’s lawyer pleaded that his client had admitted his guilt and had asked for forgiveness.

Ban limited to the U.K.

The lawyer said Kaneria wanted the PCB to allow him to undergo its rehabilitation program as the life ban was not imposed by the Pakistan board or the International Cricket Council (ICC). He argued that the life ban imposed by the ECB was limited only to cricket played in the United Kingdom and not anywhere else in the world.

Kaneria, who will turn 40 later this month, said at the hearing that he only wanted to atone for his mistakes and get a chance to play in international and domestic cricket again. He said he had offers from some foreign T20 leagues but could not accept them out of fear that the PCB will stop him from playing.

The court set January 15 as the next date of hearing and issued notices to the PCB and the Federal sports ministry to appear and respond to the petitioner’s plea before the court.

Kaneria also told the court that the board had allowed several players who had also been found guilty of breaching the anti-corruption code to undergo the rehab program and get back into cricket.
