Pakistan’s team management is not satisfied with certain players’ fitness despite a dominating win against Sri Lanka in the recently concluded Karachi Test. According to media reports, it was made clear to some players after the Karachi Test that they will have to improve their fitness levels. The Men in Green has an important year coming up as they prepare for the 2020 International Cricket Council (ICC) T20 World Cup in Australia. The management believes players need to maintain premium fitness in order to compete with other teams and be a contender for the title.

All the players are supposed to report in Lahore on January 5, after which they will undergo fitness test on January 6 and 7 at the National Cricket Academy (NCA). During the fitness tests, they will be required to pass the Yoyo test and complete one kilometer run. Pakistan are scheduled to play home Tests and Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is) against Bangladesh beginning from late January. However the series is yet to be confirmed. The Men in Green’s Test skipper Azhar Ali and T20I captain Babar Azam are currently participating in the ongoing Quaid-e-Azam (QeA) Trophy final at the National Stadium, Karachi. On the other hand, Pakistan cricket team management has decided to rest the fast-bowling duo of Shaheen Shah Afridi and Naseem Shah ahead of Bangladesh series.

PCB have confirmed that tests are going to take place on 6th and 7th. All CC players and players part of National set-up are going to be included.

Fitness tests of centrally contracted players next week

Lahore, 3 January 2020:

The fourth term fitness tests of the centrally contracted players will be held at the National Cricket Academy on 6 and 7 January.

All the available centrally contracted players will attend the two-day testing, which is aligned to their contracts. Wahab Riaz, Mohammad Amir and Shadab Khan, who will be occupied with their commitments in the Bangladesh Premier League, will undergo the tests on 20 and 21 January.

The fitness tests, to be conducted by Yasir Malik, the strength and conditioning coach of the Pakistan national men’s team, will cover five major areas, namely fat analysis, strength, endurance, speed endurance and cross-fit, and will carry equal weightage.

A player failing to meet the minimum fitness requirements will be fined 15 per cent of his monthly retainer, which will remain effective until such time he achieves the minimum fitness standards. Players failing consecutive tests will risk the chances of losing his central contract category and may face demotion.

Zakir Khan, PCB – Director, International Cricket, said: “There has always been an emphasis on the monitoring of players’ fitness levels. This time we have decided to enforce penalties, which is in accordance with the contracts, as part of our objective to make the players more accountable and responsible for maintaining high fitness standards throughout the year, which is one of the basic requirements any professional athlete.

“All the players were informed last month of the PCB’s expectations and potential sanctions in the scenario of failures.

“These fitness tests will not be limited to the centrally contracted players, but will trickle down to the six Cricket Association teams. Their tests will be conducted by their respective coaches and trainers as per their own schedules and players failing to pass fitness tests will jeopardise their chances of featuring in the Pakistan Cup One-Day Tournament to be held from 25 March to 19 April.”

Centrally contracted players:

Category A – Babar Azam (Central Punjab), Sarfaraz Ahmed (Sindh) and Yasir Shah (Balochistan)

Category B – Asad Shafiq (Sindh), Azhar Ali (Central Punjab), Haris Sohail (Balochistan), Imam-ul-Haq (Balochistan), Mohammad Abbas (Southern Punjab), Shadab Khan (Northern), Shaheen Shah Afridi (Northern)

Category C – Abid Ali (Sindh), Hasan Ali (Central Punjab), Fakhar Zaman (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa), Imad Wasim (Northern), Mohammad Amir (Northern), Mohammad Rizwan (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa), Shan Masood (Southern Punjab) and Usman Shinwari (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa) and Wahab Riaz (Southern Punjab)

Are Md Amir and Wahab Riaz demoted to category C recently or were they in category C since the start of the central contract for the season 2019-20?

Wahab Riaz was in category B but was demoted to C due to his unavailability for test cricket

Awesome. This is how they might get in shape

We need danda

Haris Sohail and Yasir Shah will definitely pass the 'quickest to the boti in the tray' test but not this fitness test.

Very good step by PCB i hope players in domestic circle will learn something and stop eating Niharis Karahis in between 3 day or 4 day domestic matches :)

This should have been done many years ago.

I just hope this is done without 'fudging'.

Misbah is probably still fitter than many of our players. Good to see the management getting strict on fitness.

how yasir shah made it to A?

Test cricketers should always be rewarded with A grade contract. At worse B grade. Even if they're struggling, we have to make Test cricket attractive or else people will keep leaving for T20s.

Having policies are useless if they are not implemented ruthlessly. The fines need to be higher as well

This is unprofessional. If this wasn't mentioned in fine print on the contract the players signed then this is illegal, they should save this rule for the next contract. I know why people don't like doing business in the subcontinent.

We need danda

Fitness is something which if a mindset and cultural change. Unless, players want to themselves look better no amount of Danda can get them sports level fit.

Players should enjoy working out, seeing changes in their body, stamina, endurance and overall physical and mental health will make them more motivated. It is something which should come from inside. Once, it comes from within then with a little bit danda can help to keep you on track.

Also, one needs to understand it is a huge sacrifice sub continent players have to make to get sports level fitness, we have been brought up eating certain types of foods at certain times. To give up that, you need to enjoy the reason you are giving it up for.

Ideal for Pakistan. If we are only going to get 8 tests a year!!
Rather have a tournament then a bilateral series In 5 out of 8 cases

How about deduct wages if you are performing poorly?

I personally dont like this clause. If somebody is not fit enough or good enough, dont pick them.

The way things are going i see it tough for us to get eight tests a year against decent sides. Thanks to England who invites us more often these days otherwise the other top teams are just busy playing each other.

Exactly too many lazy players. Fitness is a crucial part of the game which people don’t realise, look at Umar akmal he’s performing yet looks like a taxi driver.

This is too funny. Also, awkward to see Sarfraz in Category A.

Fitness was mentioned several times by Waqar in our interview and it's clear that the management are not happy with current fitness levels.

I could not believe how some players were passing the fitness tests with flying colours.

This new system will only work if there is full transparency.

People don't understand the difficulties in upbringing sub continent people face. You go to a relatives home and they offer sweet, if you refuse they get offended. Your own family thinks you are some stupid alien if you don't eat biryani/roti/daal or whatever is made at home and eat some boiled/steamed tasteless food everyday.

You need a strong head, determination and willingness to become fit in our culture. You have to change everything you learnt in during initial upbringing which your parents taught you.

It's not as easy as people think. However, professional cricketers playing for their country should change themselves. It can only happen if they enjoy working on their fitness and are strong enough mentally to follow their goals and say no to their family/relatives/friends strictly.

Damn true. This is especially true for cricketers who come from villages and/or have struggled financially. True for a lot of our cricketers.

PCB is setting up a bad example here. Why not simply disqualify overweight and unfit players?

If Virat Kohli can do it, so can our players who get paid handsomely to hire fitness trainers, nutritionists

There is absolutely no excuse for poor fitness if you are looking to play cricket for the nation. If you cannot meet the requirements, get out. It's simple as that.

Maybe for the average guy this is true, but these are supposed to be professional athletes. They are getting paid a lot of money to be in shape. No excuses for them.

There should be a zero tolerance attitude when it comes to fitness. If you cant pass the test you are out. No excuses, enough is enough.

If Pakistan is in a situation where they don't have 15 players who pass the fitness test, and are absolutely desperate then those unfit players who are needed should receive the minimum wage of Pakistan.

I will believe it when I see it. Such statements mean zilch.

Playing for your nation is an honour and brings humongous financial benefits. If one can’t force these disciplines then one doesn’t deserve to play for the national team.

How is it possible that out test captain in a category B and the sacked captain not long ago is a category A

Fair point. But the contracts were done when Sarfaraz was captain in all 3 formats.

Every other test playing nation should adopt this! Espacially the asian teams - full of tubbies who can't run to save their life.

Other boards have a better system in place where fitness is a part of a basic requirements. The players have to qualify the fitness test before the selection process.

It seems Pakistan lack talent hence has to persist with fat and unfit players.

Ususally they fix their attitude real fast when the pocket is hit hard

Ofcourse the procedures and minimum requirements are there (The Yo Yo tests and other fitness tests). However, once under PCB's contract a player would still be getting his contract salary for the year even if he deteriorates in fitness even when isnt selectable for Pak which has been a case in the past. Maintaining the fitness throughout the year is what PCB is trying to get out of every player.

A player being fit for 6 months in the year and is good enough to be part of the team when he is fit (Thus earning the contract) will not serve much purpose for Pak team. Deduction in salary would ensure that if a player is good enough and wants the contract then he has to remain fit throughout to earn it, him being available for only handful of matches or series costs the team.

So I think this is the basic idea behind it. Still PCB needs to make sure to make it part of the culture from the junior levels.

The fine has to be substantial because some of the non ambitious content with their achievement players like Azhar Ali, Asad Shafiq, Haris Sohail and co will gladly accept a 15% fine if it doesn't dent their pockets a big deal

As per PCB release:

In the initial phase of the fitness test, 10 players are being tested

The two-day fitness tests of Wahab Riaz, Shadab Khan and Mohammad Amir will begin on January 20

Usman Shinwari's fitness test will also be in the second phase due to typhoid

Fitness tests for Azhar Ali, Mohammad Rizwan and Asad Shafiq to be taken later due to viral infection

Fakhr Zaman and Hassan Ali's fitness tests will be after clearance of the medical panel

Sarfaraz Ahmed shows massive improvement in fitness

Pakistan’s wicket-keeper batsman Sarfaraz Ahmed showed massive improvement in his fitness, ARY Sports reported.

According to the sources, Sarfraz, who was ousted from the team for his poor form and fitness, once again knocked the doors of the national team with improved fitness. He gave fitness test at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Lahore alongside other national cricketers.

Opening batsman Shan Masood and number one T20I ranked batsman Babar Azam came up with flying colors in the test. Abid Ali has also improved his fitness level. Imad Wasim and Yasir Shah are under assessment for further review.

On the other hand, Test captain Azhar Ali, Mohammad Rizwan, and Asad Shafiq will give fitness Tests later.

It must be noted here that the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has decided to fine those players who will fail in the Fitness Test. The cricket board has no tolerance over fitness issues.

Pakistan cricket team’s next assignment is against Bangladesh in January. Bangladesh is scheduled to play three T20Is and two Tests in Pakistan.

https://arysports.tv/sarfraz-ahmed-shows-massive-improvement-fitness/

Says a lot about Sarfraz’s character and attitude. He only put in the hard yards and showed good work ethic after he was stripped as captain and booted out of the team.

I hope he never plays for Pakistan again. Rizwan should continue until a younger and hopefully better WK emerges.

I also hope Haris has alternate sources of income. He is always borderline when it comes to fitness tests, and I am certain he has failed plenty of them but has been kept in the squad anyway.

Pakistan does not have a zero-tolerance policy towards fitness, but it serves as a convenient cover-up for dropping players that the management does not want.

Totally misunderstood my point, of course the professional cricketers should focus on fitness. I mentioned that in my post as well.

My point was that the upbringing in a normal "Desi" household and culture is counter intuitive for sports/athletics. A person has to be headstrong and mentally focused to challenge first 15-18 years of his upbringing.

Kohli did it, he was a fat kid, he is a perfect role model for today's Desi players. Someone like Akmal, is let down by his own family/friends. The dude is not mentally strong enough to change his upbringing and his family rather than acknowledging his short comings and helping him overcome them, dig an even deeper hole for him.

What you guys are talking about is that these professionals will have the resources to change themselves, which is true, however, what I am saying is that, these professionals may have the resources but if they don't have the will to change they won't.

When will Imad work towards his fitness seriously.
Always under assessment, retrials blah blah.

Reports indicate that Haris Sohail, Imad Wasim and Yasir Shah have so far failed to reach the required standard at the fitness tests at National Cricket Academy in Lahore

===

Seems like first candidates for salary deduction identified!

.

If they dont have the will to be in shape they need to be dropped. And if there is a situation where you cant find 15 fit players, then the unfit players should be paid the minimum wage to teach them a lesson.

Would Inzamam ul Haq pass these fitness tests?

What if Pakistan would drop Inzi in 90s?

Lahore: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) coaches have provided training plans to the provincial and central contracted players due to coronavirus outbreak.

According to sources, players have been sent a three-week plan. The players have been directed to pay special attention to physical training.

The players are instructed to run and stretch in physical training and they are instructed to reduce gym training for three weeks.

Furthermore, contracted players have also been given a plan for practice and coaches have recommended doing physical training and exercise on individual bases.

The players will be given a future plan, viewing the situation after three weeks. Coaches have also instructed to stay in contact with them during this time period.

It must be noted here that Coronavirus has effected the entire world at this moment. The majority of the countries have locked down their cities to restrict the spread of this virus. Almost all sports activities around the world have been postponed for an indefinite period of time. In Pakistan, PSL 5 knockout stage and Pakistan Cup have been postponed.

Great initiative from PCB.

Fitness is very important in modern cricket and cricketers should be penalized if they don't take it seriously.

The Pakistan Cricket Board has decided to send customised training plans to 30 players, including the centrally contracted ones, to continue their fitness regime and training while staying isolated at home due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to a reliable source in the board, head coach and chief selector Misbah-ul-Haq has held discussions with the PCB chairman and chief executive officer on the players’ training plan.

“Misbah is concerned that this long isolation period could affect the players fitness and training regime and it would be difficult for them to immediately adjust whenever the Pakistan Cricket Board resumes cricket activities in the country,” the source said.

He said Misbah had worked out the customised training plans with the team’s support staff and these plans would now be sent to around 30 players individually for them to follow at home.

The PCB for the moment has suspended all cricket activities in the country amid the coronovirus outbreak.

The source said that Misbah had also made it clear to the players to avoid rich or junk foods while isolating at home and follow the same diet they follow while playing for Pakistan.

“Misbah is concerned because there is no time frame when cricket activities will resume and he doesn’t want a situation where players find it difficult to immediately adjust back to the old routine specially with a tour of Ireland, Holland and England scheduled from June onwards.”

Have to agree with Misbah here. Any player who comes back unfit when things return to normal must be dropped and fined with immediate effect.

Think Sharjeel, based on Misbah comments is a no go if fitness is a criteria

Former Pakistan opening batsman Mohsin Khan came down heavily on the fitness standards of the current Pakistan cricket team. Mohsin said eight out of eleven Pakistan cricketers playing international cricket do not match the fitness standards.

Mohsin, who represented Pakistan in 48 Tests and 75 ODIs between 1977 and 1986, pointed out the concerns at the top of the order for Pakistan and put his weight firmly behind Sharjeel Khan.

“Opening has always been an issue for Pakistan. Sharjeel Khan is a talented player. His fitness should not be a major concern because I think eight players in Pakistan’s playing eleven don’t meet the required standards so it does not make much of a difference,” Mohsin said

Left-hander Sharjeel has played 1 Test, 25 ODIs and 15 T20Is so far for Pakistan and was last seen in national colours back in 2017 in an ODI against Australia

Mohsin, who was also the chief selector of Pakistan and an interim coach of the side in 2011, lashed out at current Pakistan head coach Misbah-ul-Haq for accepting the dual role of the coach and chief selector.

“When Imran Khan became the Prime Minister, I was expecting that the decisions in PCB will be taken on merit but that does not seem the case. Our cricket is derailing from the right track as there is no consistency in the national team’s performance,” he said. “There is lack of accountability with Misbah as the team’s head coach-cum chief selector. Who will you hold responsible when the head coach fields a side which he had selected himself?”

Mohsin, who was the interim coach of Pakistan in 2011, revealed he had been offered the dual role but had rejected because he thought it would fall under conflict of interest.

“When I was the head coach of the side, PCB Chairman Ijaz Butt had offered me the role of chief selector as well but I refused because of conflict of interest,” he added.

The 65-year-old, who was the first Pakistani to score a double ton in Lord’s, heaped praise on Babar Azam for performing well in all formats and handling the new role being the captain of the T20 side well.

“Babar has continued to perform well in all three formats despite the additional responsibility of the being the captain of the T20I side,” he said. “He is a disciplined player and a role model for younger players in the country,” Mohsin said.

Wonder if any fines for Imad and Yasir Shah as both look a little on the chubby side if you look at their tummy sizes!

Wonder if any fines for Imad and Yasir Shah as both look a little on the chubby side if you look at their tummy sizes!

There has to be a fine and also questions over their selections can be raised. When the management is asking Sharjeel to work on his fitness day and night why are Imad and Yasir exempted from that. Someone bit far from Imad can confuse him for 50 years old Inzi.

Dear me.

Mushy has an excuse - the other 2 don't.

Imad is an adult, He used to be lean when he first came into the Pakistan team. Apparently he makes the excuse of pain in his knees in order to get out of tough fitness tests but his knees are no excuse for a poor diet. He has to find a way to be fit

They've been hitting the takeaways hard so they have. This is partially the reason why Pakistan isn't a force in today's modern game, the lack of respect for fitness

Exactly,

There’s a simple rule - unless you are an exception to the rule and can go out and bat like Inzamam ul Haq averaging 50 at test cricket, otherwise no one should be selected for the national team with that kind of “pizza, burger and chips diet” physique.

I think the above picture is based on players sticking to the Nandos diet.

Think in the excitement about COVID tests, PCB forgot to do fitness tests!

WOW!!

This is poor. Imad is LOI's player whereas Yasir is Pakistan's main Test spinner yet they seem to be enjoying the lockdown. Fines need to be issued.

I'd love to hear Misbah's opinion on Wasim and Shah's current fitness levels. Is someone here able to query Misbah on this matter?

Who in the PCB's right mind allowed Imad on the flight to England?

Wow, our club level coach wouldn't play imad in our team looking at his physique

These guys are supposed to be the elite sportsmen of the country? Shame on PCB for allowing this in 2020. Ghar Bhejo inko

Incredible that the PCB media dept. allowed this picture to be distributed to the media.

Unless of course it was deliberate.
