Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Najam Sethi has said that the board has come up with a policy which will now regulate the number of leagues a player participates in so that they can keep a check on his fitness.

While talking to the media in Lahore outside the PCB headquarters, Sethi said losses in New Zealand are because of the absence of front-line bowlers and all-rounders.

“When the team comes back, they’ll present the report [on the ODI whitewash] and we’ll discuss it,” said Sethi. “However, you saw some of our senior players were injured. Four or five frontline fast-bowlers were injured plus a couple of all-rounders. Plus there is a little bit of fatigue involved too.”

The 69-year-old then revealed PCB’s upcoming policy on players’ management.

“Some fast-bowlers are playing in the county; some are playing in the leagues. We have now made a policy with the help of [Director Academies] Haroon Rasheed, [Chief Selector] Inzamamul Haq and [head coach] Mickey Arthur on how many leagues a player can participate in,” he explained.

Pakistan Super League (PSL) chairman also said that he’s asked Arthur to devise individual plans for all contracted players.

“I have asked Arthur to devise a customised plan for each player’s management. The plan will tell us how to manage each individual player throughout the year. The plan will tell us how many leagues a player should take part in, when and where he suffered fitness issues and how they should be solved. He will make that plan for all of our contracted players once he comes back [from New Zealand],” said Sethi.

‘No one can stop PSL from happening’

Earlier in the week, media reports suggested a halt in the progress towards the successful organisation of the third edition of the PSL due to the non-payment of dues by certain franchises, but Sethi clarified that it was blown out of proportion.

Sethi assures PSL ‘firmly on track’

“A few PSL franchises delayed their payments due to genuine problems, but we also had genuine concerns about our payments for the organisation of the tournament. However, the problem was blown out of proportion and it was being said that the organisation of the third edition is in danger,” he clarified.

Sethi then added that no power can undo the PSL. “However, I am telling you, till I am here, no one can stop the PSL from happening. All our efforts are now focused towards the PSL since it has brought us fresh blood and the revival of international cricket.”

‘T20I series contract with WI revised’

Sethi, when asked about the upcoming tour of West Indies, revealed that the five-year bilateral contract for three-match T20I series, where the Caribbean giants would travel to Pakistan and then the latter would travel to the US for a tri-lateral series has been “revised”.

He said that the matches which were supposed to take place in Pakistan “would not reap any profits” so “we’ve restricted the series to just a one-off affair”.

"Plus there is a little bit of fatigue involved too.”

You have got to be kidding me

Will be good IF it happens...
Not a good news that Windies won't travel for full T20I series and will play only one-off match

nothing about A tours and Domestic cricket.
This man is not different from his aaqaa .

“However, you saw some of our senior players were injured. Four or five frontline fast-bowlers were injured plus a couple of all-rounders. Plus there is a little bit of fatigue involved too.”

Who were these senior players injured? Shoaib malik? 4/5 bowlers missing, couple of all rounders? With those changes we would have scored 300? yeah right. Fatigue? They've had so much time off from international cricket :/. These were the excuses for our non-performance? Nothing about our middle order? The reason we actually lost?

This is total hogwash from Sethi. Shoaib Malik and Hasan Ali were injured when the ODI series was already decided.

Junaid Khan and Usman Shinwari were injured before the series. Who else ? So I don't recognise this supposedly long injury list that lost us the series. Fact is our ODI cricket is still behind the top 5 nations and that's partly due to a pathetic domestic system that's of such atrocious standard you have folks like Shan Masood who look like Gordon Greenidge. Maybe Sethi doesn't realise the crisis in domestic cricket as he's too busy milking PSL.

And not surprised this joke bilateral arrangement with West Indies has been scaled back to just one match in Pakistan.

Instead of wasting time with such vanity projects where you can boast to the people you "brought cricket home" in an election year - why not arrange full international and A team series ?

Full quotes from media chat:

"Mickey Arthur always tells me that he is preparing for the World Cup, so kindly support me in that"

"This Test team etc we are also paying attention to it but our preparation is for the World Cup"

"When the team comes back we will look at the tour report and give it some thought"

"As you saw, some of our senior players had injuries, 4-5 frontline bowlers were also injured and there is fatigue as well"

"One of our fast-bowler is playing in the county, others are playing a lot in leagues and this is an ongoing situation"

"Haroon Rasheed and I, in association with Inzi and MA have made a policy which will be released today or tomorrow"

"This policy will define the view of PCB regarding how many leagues can the players be permitted to play in"

"We will also decide on reciprocal arrangements with foreign leagues, if there are some who do not deal well with us, then our behaviour will also be like that on a reciprocal basis with them"

"I have told Mickey Arthur that there should be a management plan for every player"

"That plan should be given to our cricket committee and they will study it there"

"For every individual player, we need to know how to manage him throughout the year, how many leagues he can play in, where he has fitness problems and so on"

"Mickey Arthur has promised to do this and a management plan for every contracted player will be made"

"[Aik Aad] 1or 2 of the franchise's franchise fee was late and had not come in even after a lot of reminders but they had some genuine problems"

"But we have genuine problems too, we also need money as without that how will we conduct this tournament"

"This became big news and some doubts were created that PSL was in danger"

"PSL was never in any danger and as long as I am here, I can promise you that no one can stop PSL"

"All our attention is towards PSL as it is due to PSL that we are getting new blood, cricket is being revived"

"We have announced the names of the 7 comms who will commentate in PSL and also announced ticket sales"

"We have made announcement about Karachi and given out dates for Lahore"

"All systems are go and Inshallah, you will see that this is a great tournament"

"Inquiries happen all the time, and they should happen also" [referring to question about FIA inquiry]

"We welcome all inquiries; in the past a lot has happened here and even now there are some issues happening"

"Our initial plan was that for 5 years, West Indies will come to Pakistan and we will go to USA for a tri-lateral series"

"However, when we did our calculations, we came to the conclusion that the three matches in Pakistan will be loss-making"

"That is because production and player costs are very high"

"We cannot get sponsors - if this was a full series then it might have been different"

"Because of this, they [CWI] said that if we arent getting anything out of this then let this be a one-off [tour] as we have promised this and dates have been announced"

"And you [PCB] come to Florida and play a Tri-lateral series"

"So a new MOU has been sent for signing [to CWI] in which they [WI] as agreed before will come in March, then we will go to US to play Tri-Lateral series which will be profitable for all"

No profits in UAE and now no profits in Pakistan? how is that even possible? Pak hasn't had any major international cricket for nearly a decade. I am sure sponsors will love the opportunity if WI travel to Pak. Even a depleted WI will bring crowds in T20...

i wonder who is the third team in this tri-lateral series.

Too much commercials at play here.

The problem with monitoring T20 leagues for the PCB

I know Sethi said that the PCB will regulate the participation of centrally contracted players in the T-20 leagues around the world but i have the following question

- If we ban the Pakistan players from leagues like BPL and CPL, will the Bangladeshi and West Indies players be allowed to play in the PSL by their respective boards?

This is not going to be simple for the PCB. Maybe the PCB can negotiate on NOC's given to players in exchange for a say in the players workload with the franchise?

Why would they allow their players to come to play PSL if Pakistan players are barred from playing in theirs?

It takes two hands to clap.

The $$ from gate receipts are peanuts, compared to TV revenues. TV is where the money and profits are made. If the PCB cannot make $$ from what is considered the second largest cricket market, there is something wrong with the broadcasting deal.

Yeah I agree gate money is comparatively peanuts. But i cannot understand how PCB cannot make money involving WI in a home tour playing T20Is. Irrespective of WI prowess has a test playing team, they have lots of superstars in T20Is. If the scheduling is conflicting with IPL, then move it around. It is not like Pak team is playing all around the year. They are relatively free and couple of T20Is can be accommodated in a weekend.

I was also quite surprised with PCB's earlier comments about franchise fees from PSL teams. The money involved is only a few million dollars and shouldn't be so difficult for PCB to raise. I can understand PCB putting pressure on teams to pay up, but failing to do so shouldn't put the PSL in doubt. With 200+ million viewers, Pak is a huge market, really huge. I am starting to think cricket may be starting to lose its appeal among masses in Pakistan. I hope that is not the case as we only have few cricket playing nations.

I think Sethi is doing good, on paper atleast. I think all Pakistanis need to get behind PSL and make it a success because that is the future and it will be the cash cow that Pakistan needs until the ICC/BCCI blockade ends. Also liking that we have some new stars emerging who can help draw crowds which was a big problem in the Misbah era after Afridi, Razzaq and Akhtar retired. Again, focus should be on playing PSL in Pakistan with or without "big name" foreign players I think we have enough star power in our domestic cricket to attract crowd.

This looks unrealistic. Every chance BCB, WICB boards will refuse to send players to the PSL if the PCB bans its players from playing in the BPL and CPL.

Rather than PCB regulating players' partition, I think the players should be given an allowance of 2 or 3 leagues they would like to play in, in the year.

For example:

Hasan chooses CPL and BPL
Shadab chooses BBL and CPL
Amir chooses NatWestT20 and BPL

and so on

Regulating Pakistani players will also help promote PSL in many ways. Pakistani players are a hot commodity whether it is in BPL, CPL, T10 or whatever other small league there is. We should not be seeing our premier players in these knock off leagues as it diminishes their value.

This looks unrealistic. Every chance BCB, WICB boards will refuse to send players to the PSL if the PCB bans its players from playing in the BPL and CPL.

Shakib, Tamim and Mustafizur are the only players from Bangladesh that would be a big loss for us.

And WICB has no credibility in the eyes of the WI cricketers, not like they will listen to them.

If PCB cuts back on this it will lose out on money as from what I have heard they are taking a cut when issuing NOCs.

ISLAMABAD: Expressing its disappointment over the absence of Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Najam Sethi in the meeting on Friday, the Senate special committee, which has been assigned to examine the overall working of sports federations in the country, has directed the PCB chief to ensure his presence next time.

The special committee meeting, chaired by Senator Dr Ashok Kumar, was held here at the Old PIPS Hall of Parliament Lodges.

In the meeting, PCB chief operating officer Subhan Ahmed and adviser to Sethi, Shakil Sheikh, briefed the committee on the deployment of contractual employees in the Board.

Subhan told the committee that Sethi was to hold a meeting with the owners of Pakistan Super League (PSL) franchises therefore he was unable to ensure his presence in the Senate body meeting.

Currently, Subhan further informed the committee, in all there were 866 employees in the PCB to which the committee sought from the Board a list of those employees in the next meeting.

Subhan also informed the committee about the cricket academies in Lahore, Multan and Karachi.

“We have also signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to build an academy at the Arbab Niaz Stadium [in Peshawar],” he said.

The Senate committee also discussed cricketer Sharjeel Khan’s case to which Subhan told the committee that the batsman was found guilty by the tribunal of involvement in PSL spot-fixing scandal.

Meanwhile, Pakistan Football Federation (PFF) administrator retired Justice Asad Munir also briefed the committee about the game’s affairs in the country.

He said the court had appointed him the administrator as there were two parallel groups functioning and things were not heading in the right direction.”We need funds to hold football activities in the country,” Justice Asad said.

The committee asked Asad why six out of seven PFF vehicles were still in use with the two parallel groups, and directed him to take legal route to recover the vehicles.

All sports representatives from regional boards also briefed the committee on the related sports activities at grass-roots level. The committee asked the regional boards to take precedence from the working of Punjab Sports Board to generate sports activities.

Senators including Agha Shahzaib Khan Durrani, Shibli Faraz, retired Col Syed Tahir Hussain Mashhadi, Mian Mohammad Ateeq Shaikh, Taj Haider and Kulsoom Perveen were present in the meeting.

Inter-provincial Coordination secretary Syed Abu Ahmad Akif, Pakistan Sports Board director general Dr Akhtar Nawaz Ganjera and other officials also attended the meeting.

Pretty sensible. This allows flexibility for players who are generally only picked for certain formats for PAK team to choose tournaments which suit their timing. Also for players who may not be picked in elite tier tournaments to pursue slightly lower prestige tournaments (e.g. BPL vs BBL etc).

A county contract should also be allowed as an option so long format players are not penalised.

Seems like such a simple & workable suggestion/compromise that I am sure the board will not take it up!

The PCB should compensate the players for missing out on certain leagues.

(MENAFN - Tribal News Network) PESHAWAR: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Najam Sethi says a large cricket academy will be set up in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa soon, while the Board is also planning to establish a cricket academy in FATA.

In an exclusive chat with TNN correspondent Hanifullah, the PCB chief said an agreement has been signed with the KP government for establishment of a modern cricket academy on the pattern of cricket academies in Lahore and Multan. He said work on the academy will be completed on priority basis to provide better training opportunities to cricketers from the region.

Mr Sethi said despite shortage of funds, the PCB is planning to establish a cricket academy in FATA as cricketers from the area are very talented and they deserve better training facilities.

To a question, the PCB chief said he used to see cricket talent in Karachi and Lahore only, but the Pakistan Super League (PSL) has changed his perception now.

'Now I firmly believe that the cricketers from KP and FATA are very talented and hard working. The importance of FATA in the national cricket is increasing rapidly,' he said.

Mr Sethi said the PCB is committed to organise the playoff matches of the PSL in Lahore and final match of the mega event in Karachi. He said the International Cricket Council (ICC) has given security clearance for this purpose. He said like last year, the PCB has the option of utilising alternate players if international cricketers refused to come to Pakistan.
