Not talking about Toronto specifically but places like Milton, Brampton etc. I think out of all the places I’ve visited in my life (And I’ve visited a lot), the cities in the GTA have to be the most soulless and boring. I remember my cousins lived in Brampton for years (now they’re in Toronto thankfully) and whenever I went there I couldn’t stand it even for a day. I would rather be in Ethiopia. Even my parents who visited from Pakistan were bored to death. Honestly the most enjoyable thing I can think of doing in a place like Brampton is having a picnic in a McDonald’s parking lot. The food in these places is considered better than average and while the Desi food is better than Toronto it is still overrated and doesn’t compare to Pakistan. So a question for Pakistanis who grew up in these places. Did you enjoy growing up in he GTA?

I love Toronto though. It’s funny how much of a contrast there is between Toronto and these places.
 
I don’t think it’s a place for someone who is young and single. I go to Canada every two years or so mainly to Milton and if it wasn’t for my aunt and cousin’s huge social circle which leads to parties every other day I’d be bored out of my mind as well.
 
I have a lot of family in Mississauga, there's a big brown community and some really good Pakistani restaurants, much better than we have down here. The 905 ain't too bad.

Those places you named are suburbs, I also live in a suburb of a major city like most and it isn't boring cause we drive a lot. Driving 40-50 minutes on way isn't unusual in America, and I assume it's the same in Canada. If you have a car then living in the suburbs is actually better cause of better neighborhoods.
 
Well if you are going to places like Milton or Brampton then obviously you will be bored to death.

That’s the whole point of the thread. A lot of Pakistanis moved to these places and their children grew up here. I’m honestly really thankful I only moved to Canada 3 years ago and that too to Toronto. I could’ve been one of the unfortunate ones who had to live somewhere like Brampton their whole life. I suppose if you grew up in these areas you probably wouldn’t find them boring though
 
If it wasn't for Pakistani/Indian restaurants then GTA would be one of the most boring cities to live in.

Even in Toronto, there isn't much to do.

The Pakistani and Indian restaurants are so average compared to back home though.
 
Love it, but I was born here.

You have to remember a person that lives in the suburbs will have a far different perspective to a visitor. They will have local friends, know the best places, and simply get more out of the city.

Btw, Milton is a town.
 
What do you look for in a place? Natural resources that are tourist attractions? Or clubs , man-made monuments etc.

What makes Toronto more entertaining?
 
My parents lived in Milton for a year,they loved it, which says a lot about it. :P
 
Karachi-walas aren't suited to small towns/cities.

It's the same here with me in the U.S. I love NYC, but can't spend a day in some random town in Virginia where my uncle lives.
 
You need to keep your summer busy. I am sure there are some event near you thing on facebook, you can join. Or google events close to you. Summer is not the time to feel bored. There is always a reason to go out in summer.

Go for camping, picnic. There are drop in open swimming pools. Library has some kind of activities. Stroll around every single mall in GTA.

The issue is 'not all activities are desi-liking activities' but you expose yourself to several other cultural activities.

Caledon is a beautiful place and that is where I plan on moving.
 
People living in those cities likely have families and suburban life is easier and more affordable with a family. That being said, they likely go to Toronto quite often. It is like this with most large cities in Canada and US.
 
Brampton, Mississauga, etc are about 20 to 30 mins drive to Toronto. Why is everyone make it seem like its 8 hours drive ?

Maybe 20-30 mins at 2am on a Sunday night. On a normal day during rush periods Sauga is about 45-60 mins and Brampton about 60-90mins.

More like Indian and particularly Sikh central. Sauga is Pakistani central.

Right now google map is estimating 35 mins from Brampton to toronto and Mississauga to Toronto 32 mins. Not bad at all in a big city. Honestly this is nothing. Commute in any big city would be this much. Imagine living in NYC, Cali, Houston, Dallas, Chicago, LA etc.

Right now is 930 pm when most people are at home.... Check again at 830 am or 530 pm

I’ve travelled in those hours, too. Obviously it’ll be little busier but it isn’t that bad. That’s the normal commute in every large metropolitan cities and GTA is smaller than the cities I’ve mentioned.
 
Also I've spent a good deal of time in Montreal and even though it had rush hour traffic but no where near as horrendous as Toronto where you are only moving inch by inch.

The survey is by a UK agency of 74 cities of the world.
 
Visited Toronto/GTA and was bored to death, nothing original about the city. Would never recommend anyone solely visiting that area.

actually it is bad compared to nyc, tonto is poorly designed for a modern city .

GTA comes to a halt during rush hour. I dread driving 3-7 pm especially. Traffic is a total mess from 7-7 M-F. However, you can relax after 7:30. Weekend traffic can be a mess too during the day.

GTA needs at least two new highways asap.

Brampton , Milton etc are not part of Toronto . The people slowly moved there because of cost of property . They were basically suburbs . It will take another decade for them to develop.

Agree, but that is the case with every metropolitan city, 30-40 mins drive turn into hours of drive during rush hours.

30 -40 mins drive is nothing in a metropolitan city.

GTA won't be building new highway but they should invest more in cheap transit (rails and buss) that have multiple every 2 block, like NYC.

It certainly is, one highway (401) connecting every suburb is ridiculous. That is why I do not consider Toronto up to par with any Major American city.

'Wethesix' is just a 'pind' compare to rest of the North American metropolitan cities. ;)
 
Live in Mississauga, absolutely love it because of a large social circle

The previous provincial government cancelled Highway 413 just before they were booted out. Highways can be built but there’s a lack of leadership.

One highway connecting every suburb? What about 403, QEW, 427, 404, 400, 410? You can throw in the 407 if you are willing to pay tolls as well.

Depends on the circumstances around one's visit. I've found Toronto more interesting than a lot of big American cities.

North Park was just near my house. It was either that or Chingcousy high... My mom often referred that school as the shooting school :))(due to the shoot outs that took place there)

North Peel was another option, but people often said that it wasn't a good one.

what connects them and why is that highway always busy?

Toronto is different, i find desi food better in Toronto than any other North American cities.

But you said there is only one highway, no? It depends on where you are coming from and where you are going. For a lot of destinations you can completely avoid 401, or only have to stay on it for 3-4 kilometers. 401 is extremely wide and is capable of supporting a lot more traffic than your average wide freeway in LA or Chicago, etc. Remember, GTA's population is only around 7 million. It's obviously not reasonable to compare its highway network to that of New York, Chicago, LA, etc. The highway network in GTA is not perfect, but you are comparing it to metros 2 or 3 times its size. If you compare it to metros of similar size, then Toronto has a highway network of similar size.

I am on that Highway almost every weekend.

It may be wide but it isn't the widest highway in North America, Houston has it beat by few lanes. If it was wide enough then there would be no traffic? widening highway does not eliminate traffic congestion.Rubbernecking...

You can avoid any highway by taking local route but most take 401, hence it is congested during rush hours, most do not want to take local.

just curious why torontorians don't want to pay toll ? New yorkers pay $12 toll avg even if they want to go to a different borough and for nj its $15

I thought all your highways in NY and NJ were tolled hence they have to pay no matter what. Torontonians don't pay toll because the toll route and the free route are running parallel to each other for the most part so why pay for a service that you can get for free (although the free one is packed so there is merit in paying a bit and avoiding traffic)
 
Don't know what the OP issue is. GTA is the best place to live and raise a family in Canada (in my opinion). It is away from the hustle and bustle of Downtown Toronto, and you can have a nice quiet family life there. Not only that, if you feel you are missing out on the crowd, just travel to downtown. Mississauga, Brampton, Markham are regarded as the best areas by locals.

The comparison by OP with Ethiopia is ridiculous. Maybe he should move to Ethiopia and save us the rant.

Yes, with all this, there are flaws. Which city doesn't. Commute by car is bad, but if you are travelling via Go and TTC, its not that bad. However, if the OP can't stand for a second, maybe he should grow a pair and stop being bullied by his elders, where he is suppose to stay at home. Rent a car and explore the great combination of cities. Food is great, health care is great, schools are great, and definitely the infrastructure is great.

Because it adds up.

If New Yorkers could get away from paying toll they wouldn't either.

Another thing is that Tax in Canada is higher compare to US.

I would rather pay extra tax to avoid paying for toll, health care, and education.

I feel like Torontorian wants to feel important hence comparison to rest of the North American city. All of Toronto downtown can be fitted in 1/3 of Manhattan. There is no comparison.

maybe sales tax is higher but corporation and income tax before trump was way higher! Corp tax was 35 to 40% compared to canada which i think is 20 to 25%

Toronto is indeed the most populous and best city in Canada. But it still has a long way to go when competing with other metropolitan cities. Transit/Commute infrastructure is horrible indeed. But then, the Toronto I grew up in had a bit of both in it. It had the quiet lifestyle, and also the hustle and bustle of a megacity (most in downtown). I want it that way ofcourse. I am also thankful something is being done about the transit there at the moment. Being away from Toronto/GTA for 10 years makes me miss it even more at times.

I’ve only lived in Toronto for 3 years now so I don’t have any emotional connection to it. Don’t know what you’re talking about

It is true that quite a few people from Toronto, including many desi people, think of Toronto as the center of the universe and the best thing since apple falling on Newton's head. While I haven't lived in Toronto, I used to visit it nearly every weekend for several years and saw this attitude a lot. Some are polite about it, some are smug about it, etc, but it is definitely present in the city.

True. Some desis consider Canada as this heaven on earth and perfect place which also really annoys me

It's the big city mentality, you find that in the biggest cities of any country.

Is it feasible to live in GTA or in a city, town in GTA which is not congested and is quiet but to travel to Downtown Toronto for work daily?

I have heard of anecdotes where people who have to come to work at 9-10 pm, wake up at 6 am in the morning and leave their houses in the GTA by 7 am just so that they can get to work on time. And these guys rely on the Go Transit and then the TTC and justify themselves saying that it is not worth driving to Downtown daily due to the traffic and headache in parking the car.

Some people drive their cars up to the Go Transit or TTC stations and then take public transportation from there.

My dad bought a house in Toronto because he works in Toronto but he is upset at how over priced the Toronto houses are in relation to the size and amount of space they give you and he recons that he could have gotten a much bigger house in the GTA or even in the US for the same price.

You can get a four-five bed house just 20 mins outside of downtown Austin, TX for roughly $400,000. You will struggle to find a decent 2 bed condo for that price anywhere in the GTA.


Cost of living is severely inflated here because of all the Chinese pumping their white or black money and parking it here by buying property.

The best way is to 1) live in a suburb area which is not a ghetto 2) and is very near to Toronto. Then you enjoy best of both worlds. So you can live peacefully in good environment with bigger space and also have a blast in Toronto when needed.

Not just Pakistan. I had a friend who kept bringing up how great Toronto was when I was discussing how much I liked Montreal. He felt very insecure about it, even when I was not even mentioning Toronto in the discussion.

My friend does this in the reverse (lives in Toronto, works in the outer rims of the GTA) and he has the same problem. I believe he wakes up at 6 am, takes an hour to get ready and gets on Go train around 7. If you hate spending away 2-3 hours of your life each day, this is the way to spend away those 2-3 hours of your life. A good compromise, however, is to find a job where you can work 2 or more days of the week from home. The prices in Toronto are out of whack relative to the income, but you can still have your cake and eat it too if you can work from home 2-3 days a week.

In some ways but not everyone will prefer it over Pakistan. Most Pakistanis who are there to get an education including me, prefer back home

How can you compare Austin to Toronto lol? What's the population difference? Besides Austin is up and coming rather than established like Toronto
Compare it to NYC or San Fran I guess.

Austin is established. UT, Dell, Texas instruments, state capitol.
 
Austin does not feel like a large metropolitan city, yet..

As for Toronto, what is it like, are there lakes, or hills you can drive to on weekends?

If you look at the US, you have places like Dallas, Houston, Chicago, which do not have any proper natural scenery even if you drive 2 hours from the city.

And you have places like the Bay Area, Seattle, San Diego, Denver, from where you can drive to nice national parks or the seaside for a day trip.

Austin might not be a good comparison but Dallas, Houston are at least in terms of population. The bay area is also a good comparison. Dallas and Houston have kept up with the housing demand and thus the price have not increased significantly over the years. Toronto, the Bay area have not kept up with the housing demand and thus the housing prices have exploded to very unreasonable levels.

Depends on whom you ask. People in Toronto and most of Ontario will consider Toronto better. People from Vancouver might consider Vancouver better. It IS true though that Vancouver is less affordable than Toronto, but not by much.

I didn't use any scientific method to compare Austin to Toronto... the only reason I compared it because my relatives bought a house 20 mins from downtown Austin for the amount I posted and I had first hand knowledge off it :ashwin

There's no way around it.

Just think of it as paying to be closer to work. The further away you go, the cheaper it gets.

A lot of people are starting to work in the suburbs or from home to avoid the commute. However, that's not always possible depending on your job and it comes down to the type of sacrifice you're willing to make.

Comparing NYC, Chicago, LA to Toronto should be a crime. There is no comparison.

All of Cali has more population than all of Canada.

On NYC and LA I agree, but Chicago isn't a far off comparison. Chicago metro population to GTA is only about 1.5 times as much so it's a valid comparison. As to how they compare, people can decide themselves, but you will very frequently see people enthusiastic about urban centers, cities, skyscrapers, transit, highways etc compare Chicago to Toronto.
