In any team their are percentage players who temper aggression with caution and have massive success. These players are perfectly suited for test cricket or moderately important loi. Modern examples of such cricketers are
Virat , Rohit, Ashwin,Babar,Imam,Amla, root ,Williamson etc. Earlier guys were like SRT ,Mo Yousuf etc. These guys take minimal risk and succeed generally. But here's the catch .Big matches don't happen generally. The inherent nature of being cautious hinders these players to rise to their potential.
Them their are impact players who who live under the shadows of the players from above category and have no fear of failure. Thus can rise in crunch situations when every one else plays percentage cricket Modern examples Braithwate,Dhawan,Butler, miller ,chahal,Hasan Ali etc . While in early days Viru, young msd, yuvi ,Raina,, Gilchrist,Jaysurya, afridi etc
Now a team full of impact players is doomed for failure as they will loose and win badly.
Team full percentage players will win more but will falter in crunch situations.
IIIRC some spirit had taken hold of Ashwin and Jadeja in CT 2017 because they refused to deviate from leg stump line(i.e. percentage cricket).
When we won the WC in 2007 & 2011 it was those impactful performances of those less pedigreed players like Gambhir,Raina, Yuvi , RP Singh etc who got us through.Even Ishant over Vs England in CT final comes to mind.
Now as an Indian cricket fan I am not dissing our Gun batters. But after debacle CT 17 our think-tank understood we need high impact bowlers who have no fear getting hit for sixes and flight that ball bravely.
Same was required with batting line up. We need right mix of conventional batters and dashers/power hitters in our team to win crunch moments or just like in past we will reach Semis or fianls and falter on big stage. Because barring that our only hope will be Bumrah ,Shami & Kulcha rolling over opponents in SF & Finals . Which will be unlikely.
Impact players FYC
1. Pant(sure sure sure)
2. Krumal
3. Prithvi Shaw (No.4)
4 Raina(who did nothing wrong in England)
