He becomes the fifth player of the franchises to get infected from the global pandemic. The left-hander will undergo a mandatory seven-day quarantine.

So it has begun. Tournament hadn't even started and it is getting positive covid players already.

In a strange way - better get this sorted now then at the business end. Once infected, they wont get reinfected for a 2-3 months I think.

Sarfaraz Ahmed speaking about the upcoming game.

Peshawar Zalmi have won the toss and have opted to field in Match 2 of PSL 7 against Quetta Gladiators

Crowd turnout is low today. Khi does not have the appetite for games on the trott. We need to be able to diversify to other stadiums

So a foreign wicketkeeper for PZ. Looks like it will be another tournament with young Mohammad Haris on the bench.

A lot of reporters complained about the absence of any marketing, promotion, hype via posters, billboards and decorations throughout the city by the PCB and the provincial government in Karachi. The only one time when the PSL attracted full houses in khi for every game was in 2019 where both the PCB and the provincial government promoted the PSL in the city like no tommorow.

No body ever learns

The match thread yesterday was full of posters criticizing everything about the PSL from A-Z, just because the pathetic Karachi batting was scoring slowly. Today QG are bashing bowlers to all parts of the ground, and all I hear are crickets...

Can't wait for Ifti chacha to give this pathetic PZ bowling attack a good thrashing. Can't believe Arshad Iqbal and Mohd Haris are sitting on the bench whilst Sohail Khan and Yasir Khan get a game

So from the given 25% allotted seats due to covid, about 35-40% within them looks empty.

Sparse crowd

Cant broadcast your so called premier product in front of the world with empty stadiums. That is extremely damaging from a broadcast and sponsorship point of view.

Fielding has been really bad, tuned in about 30 mins ago. Ahsan Ali and Smeed look like 2 men on a mission. Zalmi bowling some trash too it seems

We should just stop holding PSL matches in Karachi.

Give it to Faisalabad, Multan etc.

Maybe it's because of the vaccine criteria. Plus I don't know any other way of buying a PSL ticket than from their online partner. Not everyone in Karachi / Pakistan buys stuff online.

There hasn't been enough marketing as well. Tickets are starting with 500rs. Maybe notch it down to 300rs.

Iftikhar gone. Sameen Gul picks up the wicket. Quetta at 180 runs, 5 balls left to make as much runs as possible

Quetta finish off with 190 runs. Smeed will finish off with 97. Quetta should be able to defend this

Sohail with a good start.

Year after year he performs quite well for a veteran.

lol is it just me or is that LBW review just showing Hasnain giving the biggest chuck I have seen, that was 25 degree angle. wow

Oh my God. Waqar Younis back to commentating. Over the past 10 years he has rotated between commentary and coaching. Amazing.

Sohail Tanvir - different team - same performance?

Hasnain and/or Naseem should have been bowling at Malik.

Bowling Nawaz and the young leggie was just serving it up on a plate for Husain Talat and Shoaib Malik.

Very average captaincy from QG.

Faulkner is too predictable these days. Watched him play 7-8 years ago and that back of the hand slower bowl was the trend back then. But it he is just too predictable now. Needs to add more skills to his arsenal

And Naseem Shah is now expected to stop PZ from scoring 4 runs in the last over.

The PSL is picking these retired has been cricketers. The Franchises need to be more ruthless with their selections and picks. They have dropped Gayle in the past.

I wasn;t the most talented cricketer but I'm savvy enough to know that if Shoaib Malik then do not feed him spin!!!

some really odd decisions. First. Playing spinners when Shoaib Malik was batting? Only giving Tanveer 2 overs? Naseem Shah their best bowler gave 3 runs in first over while everyone was getting spanked and Sarfaraz took him off for 10 overs until it was a bit too late.

Karachi, 28 January 2022: Incredible knocks by Hussain Talat and Shoaib Malik after Usman Qadir’s economical two for 20 started Peshawar Zalmi’s HBL Pakistan Super League 2022 campaign with a win over Quetta Gladiators.

Hussain’s 52 at a blistering strike rate of just under 180 set the platform for Zalmi to overhaul the daunting target of 191 with two balls spare. The left-hander struck five fours and two sixes, before Shoaib, who made unbeaten 48 off 32, finished the job in the last over. The experienced all-rounder struck four sixes and a four. He set the match for his side by smashing James Faulkner for two sixes and a four in the last three balls of the penultimate over.

Usman Qadir was outstanding with the ball, delivering 14 dots in his four overs. After getting smashed for 14 in his first over, Usman’s last three overs added only six runs to Gladiators’ total. He broke Gladiators’ dangerous opening stand in the 16th over as he accounted for Ahsan Ali and Ben Duckett in the same over.

This was Zalmi’s 10th win over Gladiators in the 19 matches these two sides have played in the tournament.

Other performers:

Will Smeed had a fantastic start to his HBL PSL career – recording the highest score for any batter on debut in the tournament. The right-handed batter from England smashed an electrifying 97 off 62, crunching 11 fours and four sixes. He along with Ahsan Ali, who smoked 73 off 46 (eight fours and three sixes), put 155 runs for the opening wicket before the latter was removed in the 16th over.

Such was the magnitude of his knock that despite being on the losing side, Smeed was named player of the match.

Zalmi’s Yasir Khan also had an impressive HBL PSL debut as the right-handed opener scored 30 off 12, smashing four fours and two sixes. It was the opening partnership of 43 from 21 balls between him and Tom Kohler-Cadmore (22 off 16) that provided Zalmi the impetus to overhaul the target.

Glaidators’ Mohammad Nawaz, when introduced into the attack in the fourth over, accounted for Yasir and in his next two overs removed Kohler-Cadmore and Haider Ali. He finished with three for 44.

Nawaz’s teammate Naseem Shah was the most economical from his side with his 3.4 overs giving away only 19 runs. Naseem’s tight lines and lengths, and subtle variations, allowed only six runs each in the 16th and 18th overs, keeping the contest alive till the end.

Quotes:

Will Smeed - It was a really good knock for me but the feeling would have been better if Quetta Gladiators would have won the match. I had a good run against Zalmi and I would try to use this start in upcoming matches as well. It’s a really good feeling to be playing in the HBL PSL and I’m looking forward to the challenge ahead.

Scores in brief:

Quetta Gladiators 190-4, 20 overs (Will Smeed 97, Ahsan Ali 73; Usman Qadir 2-20, Sameen Gul 2-41)

Peshawar Zalmi 191-5, 19.4 overs (Hussain Talat 52, Shoaib Malik 48 not out, Yasir Khan 30; Mohammad 3-44)

If there aren't many big stars available for the draft. I'd rather see some lesser star names but those who are performing and want to commit for the whole season. Preferably not retired players of course
