Not sure if folks are noticing but everyday physical copies of movies to music are getting reduced and everything is being out to be hidden behind digital paywall.

My massive concern with this is who owns it, I have seen youtubers share how we cannot share a digital copy as it's against the policy.

I know I'm being a boomer here but this entire subscription buy rent digitally doesn't really feel like owning. This seems to be happening with games, books, music, movies etc.. does anyone else feel equally annoyed by "digital owning"

I haven't owned a physical form of entertainment in years, whether it is a movie, a music album or a video game. I find digital not only cheaper, but also more convenient, as far as not having to worry about finding space around your house to store all of your physical discs and CDs.

Do you stream them or own them, owning them also means you can't officially lend me any of those copies.

I do agree on the space part ,digital is easy to maintain but i don't think i'll ever be able to go completely into kindle compared to physical books.

I didn't used to buy a whole lot of physical media before so it's not made much of a difference for me.

Books are the only exception. I buy a lot of kindle books because of the convenience, sometimes when I see a book I want I can buy it and read it instantly, and I save money and space. However I do miss holding the physical copy and the feeling as you physically get to the end of a book.

Remember having Spider-Man as the first dvd I can remember… had to put in disc 1 and an hour later disc 2 into the JVC dvd player with flashing lights lol good times

Older members of the family have vinyls and records etc, I guess nobody owns stuff like that anymore.

Vinyls are beautiful , they will always be amazing to me due to the quality of sound. Digital copies were that level until Itunes and then spotify made it possible.

Vinyl can be lent, whereas a digital copy atleast now cannot be officially lent which makes the whole point of ownership tied to an account also cannot be resold.

A digital copy that is owned cannot be resold as well which is possible with dvds, books etc any hard copy.

doesnt matter, piracy is peaking again, its significantly easier to watch pirated copies of anything then scrolling through endless apps. fwiw for me nothing beats the cinema for movies, i dont go as much as movies are rubbish these days, but ill always be willing to fork out a fair price for a good cinema experience.

I’ve never really been into owning physical music formats, CDs, vinyl, or even downloads. For me, it’s always been about the listening experience. As long as the sound quality is great, I’m happy streaming from YouTube or any other platform that makes music instantly accessible.

The problem with piracy is that material which is popular is pirated and actual well made artwork is not, for example this is a masterpiece which is not available on most pirate sites!

Junk which is "popular" is easily available.

Agreed, the sound quality on Vinyl is awesome compared to digital because the way Digital formats standardize and normalize sounds

Listen to something on Vinyl and then on YouTube and you will know the difference

Piracy unfortunately is peaking again and its due to everything becoming like cable again.

Quality wise digital does deliver now, even for games it does but imagine the paywall behind which everything sits, production companies are taking everything behind a firewall, everything is slowly becoming "rent or buy".. heck even cats and dogs from 2001 isn't easily available without rent or buy.

I prefer digital copies.

I nowadays buy digital video games, for example.

I have 15-20 PS5 games. All are digital.

I even prefer to buy ebooks. I use Kindle.

Yes but there was a time we could sell the games off, or even lend it , anything of that sort can't be done now..
I recall so many shops back in the day buying original games, same with second hand books, the whole ecosystem is dying and I'm all for change but the new system works for us only in terms of "space" but economically it is more of a profit for corporations.

Ubisoft literally has subscription model for their games now.

True.

Anyway, I have some physical books but all of my games are digital.

i cant share it, but it took me less than a minute to find that. the right pirate sights have far bigger catalogues than any of the legal platforms.

Not fussed about reselling, I never ever done that usually just give to charity if don't need but I like the thought of handing down some of my books to my kids obviously cant do that with kindle.

Get access to top tier private trackers .. they have pretty much every movie made, more than all the streaming services combined.

i grew up in the age of kazaa, limewire and emule, modern piracy is so easy kids dont even know what seeding is.
In India we had access to torrents, folks would download burn to dvds and store lol. Limewire while great never beat torrents for me, I used torrents as late as 2015-16 in India.

Books are special, I used to get books as birthday gifts during school years, have all of them.
