KARACHI: Pakistan International Airlines’ (PIA) revenue has increased more than 40 percent during the past six months, while seat factor improved between 80 to 84 percent, its chief said on Friday,

PIA Chief Executive Officer Arshad Malik said the airline’s cargo space utilisation increased from 50 percent to almost 80 percent.

“PIA also enhanced its engineering capabilities and now aircraft maintenance i.e. line maintenance and Check A can be performed at Lahore and Islamabad,” Malik said in a statement. “This facility was previously only available at Karachi. This allows for saving cyclic costs and ageing of the aircraft and maintenance leading to cost savings.”

PIA CEO said two aircraft that were grounded since long were made serviceable this year. “All Boeing 777s and A320 aircraft in the fleet are operational and contributing towards revenue generation.”

Malik said a proper aircraft spares inventory planning program, which was lacking before, has also been implemented in PIA, which has reduced the aircraft downtime and better serviceability of aircraft. “Ground service equipment, which plays an important role for any airline, was left neglected in the past.”

PIA head said the ground service equipment that was left scrape has been overhauled utilising the airline’s own resources, “thus saving millions of rupees which was given to other service agencies”.

Malik said PIA renewed its IATA (International Air Transport Association) operational safety audit certification and is now in the process of attaining EASA (European Union Aviation Safety Agency) certification.

“PIA’s property assets in Pakistan and abroad were neglected and abandoned in past, this year we identified these properties in USA, Amsterdam, Iran, Tashkent and other countries and are trying to make better use of them.”

Malik said PIA has introduced 13 new routes since last 12 months, increased frequencies of flights based on demand prospects and commercial viability. Unlike the past all business decisions are now made collectively.

Its cause they finally cut routes and expanded profitable ones only, like a private company would.

Does this mean the ticket prices will decrese and i wont have to pay almost £900 for a return ticket ?

Also, does this mean that the flight will arrive and depart on time, which is something that has never occurred when i haved flied with PIA?

Are you really still complaining? Ofcourse, this is only the start and still a lot of improvements need to be made.

No... if other airlines are charging roughly £900 for a round trip to Pakistan, then PIA is aiming to achieve same number but not do so at a loss and provide comparable service.

For example Emirates, Etihad, Turkish and Qatar all charge roughly $1800-2500 for round trip to Pak from Toronto, depending on time of year. PIA is also roughly at the same number but the quality is waaaaaaayyyy inferior and I would wager that PIA is making the trip at a loss. That is what they are trying to change.

I don't think I will ever fly on PIA again during my life time. None of my family members will, they are prepared to pay $1000 extra, take extra connecting flights, to wait a bit before getting to Pakistan but will never sacrifice comfort, good service and facilities

That is crazy amount.

It would be probably way cheaper to fly to JFK from YYZ then to Pakistan on Emirate or Etihad.

I agree it is expensive but flying to JFK (especially on a separate ticket) will not only be just as expensive but risky if Syed1 has a delay or cancellation in his JFK flight then Emirates or Etihad will not rebook him for his KHI flight as they are on separate tickets. Not to mention inconvenience of two layovers vs one from YYZ.

Flying to JFK, Boston or Chicago and from there to Pak is roughly same cost as flying to Pak directly from Toronto but with alot more additional khuwari. Also the amount I posted was in Canadian dollars, so degrade it by 0.7 and then that is the amount in USD :inti

Air China is defo the cheapest. You can get return for 1200 - 1400 (Canadian dollars :inti), however, the hitch is that usually there is a 16-40 hour stay in Beijing and most travelers are already short on time and they wouldn't want to waste 2 days of a 2 week vacation in some random city.

What exactly is seat factor? Is that an aeronautics/passenger haul term? Does it mean bigger seats or more cushion? I get slightly apprehensive when companies throw out terms which seem simple but mean little. But honestly curious about it since I'll be using that seat factor soon.

Seat factor (or load factor or passenger factor) = total number of passengers / total number of seats.

The other day I was booking a ticket on PIA's website for someone after a decade and when the ticket was booked and then it took me to the page where you can choose your seat on the plane I was surprised when I saw something which I have never ever seen on any airline site before when choosing a seat.

Basically to select a seat and depending where you wanted to sit they had prices allocated separate than the ticket price that you pay them for. So the prices were like ranging from around I think £40 down to £10. I was like WOW I've never seen this thing when choosing where to sit on a plane and that £10 or £40 then goes on top of the ticket you are paying for.

Those who travel on the airline have they seen this as well and also since when has this thing come in?

I've seen the same thing for Air New Zealand, except just two categories. Desirable seats are $30 (NZD), the rest are free.

Thing is that seats aren't any superior or bigger or any different to the rest shown on the seating plan.

It didn't make sense and just looked like another gimmick to make money.

While this was a tactic introduced by budget/low cost carriers, this is now a pretty standard revenue model for most operators, including the quality ones. Emirates introduced this about a year ago.

What's the reason behind this extra charge to sit on a plane where you want to?

It's actually quite common these days. Every major airline charges for preferred seats. Good on PIA for finally getting with the times.

So it was random? Seats near the front, near exits, and with more legroom were not more expensive? Strange.
