Pakistani Warner.

Or maybe even better if he can perform outside Asia.

Thank you Misbah!

Fantastic. Long may it continue. Sad that he didnt get his chance earlier.

WAS NOT YASIR HAMEED HAD HIT TO consecutive 100s on debut

Record is hundred in 1st and 2nd match. 8 others have done it.

Well done Abid, the hard work paying off. Keep on piling them.

Don’t like his celebrations though, Shaan Masood’s calmness was way better, but I am a boring person so I that’s natural for me to say. Just saying before posters jump on my comment.

Exactly.
He's going OTT.
Did it against Aus in the ODIs and we ended up losing the match

But but he's 32 so we're better off going back to Sami Aslam and Imam.

There's nothing OTT in it. It's his passion and he's celebrating after a 100, not a 50.

He has waited a long time to do this. Love his passion and confidence. If it weren't for Misbah, he would still be rotting in domestics.

Inzamam had already selected him in multiple A tours and the ODI team before Misbah was around. It's likely he'd be in the team regardless of whether Misbah or someone actually competent was our Coach/Chief Selector.

He scored a 100 on debut in ODIs.

Next series was World Cup - Mickey Arthur immediately wanted him dropped.

Imam Ul Haq

Looks better than Imam for tests. I guess they thought Imam might carry Pakistani team in tests and ODI for next decade so wanted to give him a chance.

Better late than never, but opportunities missed from Pakistan perspective.

I don’t why know but I just adore his passion for the game!

It can be seen in his celebration.

Love it!

I find it funny that you guys keep talking about random names from U19 cricket, when you've had this excellent batsman at the top order.

Dont understand why your selectors insist of throwing teenagers in deep end, when you've had such finished articles waiting for the last 2-3 years. Would it not have been better to have Abid Ali opening in Aus instead of Imam?

Einstein!

Mickey and inzimam introduced Abid Ali to international cricket not misbah

He's been with the squad before misbah took charge

If anything goes bad then misbah inherited the team Mickey or else thank you misbah lol

Whilst you feel that his inclusion in International cricket has been a bit late, I personally feel that he has emerged for Pakistan at the right time as the finished product. His service will be much more valuable to Pakistan in his last 5-6 years of his career than a initial stop start kind of service of a 25-26 year old batsman

You'll go to any lengths to defend the dark era.

Inzi selected him for the Aus series, he scored a 100, then immediately Mickey Arthur wanted him dropped. Next series was the World Cup. Mickey was strictly against Abid making excuses like fitness.

And then he preferred playing Malik out of all people at the world cup. That cost us the tournament, he then had to play Haris Sohail instead once his favorite failed.

Some people are very fond of personality worship and can't stop doing pooja of Misbah

Anyways well done Abid. He would have been playing 2 years ago if previous chief wasn't hell bent on playing his nephew. Can't attribute his selection to Misbah either who as we all know didn't even prefer playing Abid and only played him after all other options failed. Abid kept knocking on the door and eventually he broke the door down.

It's sad that he didn't get to play the WC because of nephew.

Very compact, good in defence. Strokes all round wicket. Good balance at crease, been a joy to watch so far.

Its his hardwork paying off. Its such a shame that talents like him who are international quality arent seen by selectors a bit early. He could have come in 3-4 years ago when we were struggling with openers. Still he can give atleast 3-5 good years as a test opener.

Stats can only show limited things and that is why selectors need to actually see to determine how well someone can adapt to at international level, though Abid’s FC stats have been impressive as an opener for some years now.

He is probably your most respected Cricketer from the last 10-15 years, so yes, you should do his pooja too.

Why weren't Pakistan playing him for last 2 years?

He seems very good find

In fairness, Abid began to really get noticed with his performances vs Australia in a side match, New Zealand A and England Lions last winter.

Whilst he should have been on the tour to South Africa, in some ways I'm glad he's had an essier introduction at home otherwise he'd be dropped for Imam by now.

Congratulations Abid.
I hope he can maintain these performances for us. Tremendous feat, this.

Players scoring in domestic first class matches are often ignored. Selection committee select the players in the name of Potential and they find there was no potential after 4-5 years by this time they ruin the careers of others who deserve on merit and performances.

Not sure what Kamran Akmal's beef is with Abid Ali but he said this today:

"The culture has become like this, Abid Ali who made hundreds is hiding his face due to his test results."

You misunderstood Kamran's statement. He doesn't have any beef with Abid Ali. He meant to say that PCB is putting so much effort on fitness and making Abid Ali work so hard for it. When he looks at his low fitness score it will effect his confidence. Kami said to let him enjoy and play what ever cricket is left for him since he was picked so late for the national team.

Abid Ali not looking that great so far in this tour of New Zealand - had high hopes for him.

His technical flaws are on full display now. Huge gap between bat and pad in the first innings. Lunging onto the front foot in the second, fending off a short ball like a tailender. A total embarrassment I am afraid along with Shan. These guys make a mockery of the country.

Play on dead pitches, score a century and cement your place for the next 2 years. Recipe for success in Pak cricket

Abid Ali is like Yasir Hameed.

There is only so long that you can survive on the basis of centuries against minnow attacks.

Like most Misbah picks, he wasn’t chosen until he was already in age-related decline. In poor Abid’s case, he wasn’t picked until he had lost around 30% of his skills.

To be fair he was done by two superb deliveries in my opinion.

Can't say the same for other batsmen in this match.

In the first innings, he was scared of the short ball hence all his weight was on the back foot on full lenght delivery. He was late on the ball, couldn't reach it.

Agreed - he is a limited batsman picked after his prime. There is just too much wrong for this guy to have any meaningful success in the long run. A century here are there on a flat wicket against pedestrian bowlers will not cut it.

No I'm sorry I will not accept excuses for Abid. These deliveries look great when they get a wicket but the fundamental reason for Abid's dismissal in both innings was his shabby technique.

In the first innings, the gap between bat and pad was massive. This is tailender stuff, not what opening batsmen do.

The ball in the second innings bounced higher than others but Abid's weight transfer onto his front foot was just fundamentally flawed. Premeditating the ball in the way a lower order batsman does. And then fending off the ball like a tailender too.

That ball to a New Zealand batsman would have been left well alone. Unfortunately guys like Abid just are not good enough. It's a fact that simply has to be accepted.

Abid Ali is 33 and a half years old and still hasn’t adapted to higher bounce - even at the gentle pace of Trent Boult, who is 15K slower than Mitchell Starc or Jofra Archer.

Asian batsmen have to learn to adapt to higher bounce in SENA. What’s frustrating is that Sami Aslam was ignored by Misbah even in 35 and 29 man squads, until he emigrated. And he was eight years younger!

Yasir Hameed was 10 times the batsman Abid has ever been.
The former was a very gifted strokemaker who was handled terribly by Inzamam and co.

In the second innings he got scared off the short ball hence the ball he got out to his weight transfer wasnt fully going forward.

The guy is scared of being hit and soon as he was hit in the 1st inn's he kacked his pants. He should get lost.

Another failure for him - not working this for Abid Ali.

Looks scared of playing pace bowling. Always struggles to get forward and play with confidence. exactly same issues as Imam in test cricket.

These guys are technically and mentally not strong enough to survive.

Really a nothing ball which he got out to. It didn't move much, just pitched back of a length and he got stuck on the crease unsure of whether to go forward or back.

Maybe if he was 21 he could be developed but 30 something coming into test cricket with technique issues is no good.

pretty much this, i think he'll get one good score in this series, maybe in a second innings, but he does not seem confident.

He can only score against minnows level sides. Don't have the technique to survive against top sides

Chugging along Abid - no real challenge as such but the run rate is pretty dismal

Lucky it's likes of ngarva and blessing bowling.

These 2 would be In the pavilion very quickly if it was nortje and rabada bowling

At least Imran plays some good quality shots. Abid plays very risky and hack type shots which will be difficult to get away against good sides. Abid has such a pathetic technique. How does this guy even get picked for such a big stage is beyond me. We are truly short on batting talents.

Why is run rate even an issue? Its a 5 day test match and they are scoring at over 3.5 runs an over.

If you want to watch crash bang and wallop kind of cricket then i suggest you switch over to the IPL.

We are playing against a below average Zimbabwe attack, with the field placement of their and rubbish fielding. Many teams score ar over 3 RPO against Top 5 teams, we're playing against Zimbabwe. No intent whatsoever. the way Abid celebrated his fifty it looked like he scored a double hundred

You don’t understand test cricket if your going on about the run rate . The opposition still needs to be respected , and with attacking fields and a new ball there is no need to be unnecessarily aggressive . Set a foundation and progress from there . Ultimately if Pakistan bat Zimbabwe out the game and only bat once then it’s job done .

Intent does not even come into it , because they have already scored at a reasonable rate. It’s day 1 of a 5 day test . What else you expect . Seriously so many casuals here who just don’t understand the variations in the different formats of cricket but love to criticise just for the sake of it .

It's test cricket 3.5 runs is perfectly fine they should continue batting like they are and bat only once.

Abid Ali needs to up his scoring rate or really is of no use to Pakistan. What he played against Zimbabwe cannot be repeated elsewhere.

Nothing has changed for Abid Ali. Nothing.

His dismissal today

Nothing has changed for Abid Ali. Nothing.

He really irked me with his selfish raising of the bat in that first test against Zimbabwe after he scored a 50.

He's certainly a people person in the team but he's not doing enough against notable opposition in my view.
