Bangladesh star all-rounder misses out in ICC Men's Champions Trophy squad

Having made the semi-final in the previous edition in 2017, Bangladesh will be aiming to go all the way to silverware with a stellar 15-member squad.

Nazmul Hossain Shanto was named captain as Bangladesh unveiled their squad for the upcoming ICC Men's Champions Trophy.

A major name missing in the lineup was that of the former skipper and veteran all-rounder, Shakib Al Hasan.

In the previous edition of the tournament, Bangladesh had qualified for the semi-finals - their best-ever finish in the competition's history.

If Shakib isn't in the squad I guess that means his international career is over, right? What an anticlimactic way to retire.

I guess they can go with this XI.

1. Tanzid Hasan
2. Soumya Sarker
3. Shanto
4. Mehidy Hasan
5. Towid Hridoy
6. Mushfiqur Rahim
7. Mahmudullah
8. Jaker Ali
9. Taskin
10. Fizz
11. Nahid Rana

Explained: Why Bangladesh have dropped Shakib Al Hasan from their Champions Trophy squad

On Sunday (January 12), the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) announced their 15-player squad for the tournament, with Shakib conspicuous by his absence. Indeed, it is the first time since his international debut that Bangladesh will participate in an ICC tournament without their star all-rounder.

His recent political troubles have put his status within Bangladesh cricket in doubt. After nationwide student protests led to the fall of Sheikh Hasina's government, controversy courted Shakib as he was named as an accused in cases of extrajudicial killings during Hasina's tenure. In September, he also said that he feared for his safety in Bangladesh.

But Shakib has not had a good time on the field either.

Banned for throwing: Is Shakib valuable enough to Bangladesh as a batter alone?

He played one County Championship match for Surrey against Somerset in September, and his bowling spell in the game saw him get reported for throwing by the umpires. He was subsequently banned from bowling by the England & Wales Cricket Board (ECB) after an independent assessment of his bowling action at Loughborough University found that the elbow extension in his action was more than the permissible 15 degrees.

The ECB suspension was recognised by the ICC. Shakib was then banned from bowling in international cricket, and in domestic cricket by all national federations. On Sunday, it was reported that Shakib had failed a second test of his bowling action, this time conducted at the Sri Ramachandra Centre for Sports Science in Chennai, in December.

Without passing a test of his action, Shakib remains banned from bowling in international cricket. He is free to play as a batter, though. his exclusion from Bangladesh's Champions Trophy squad may have been on the basis that at this stage of his career, Shakib does not make their squad as a batter alone.

In addition, Shakib has not been a regular in Bangladesh's international setup for a while now. He took part in the T20 World Cup last year, as well as the Test series in India in September-October 2024. However, Bangladesh have played 13 ODIs since his last one, which was against Sri Lanka in November 2023, during the World Cup.

The beginning of the end?

At 37 years old, this could be the end of Shakib Al Hasan's international career. He has already announced his retirement from Test cricket. The T20I door remains open, but once again, he has not been involved since the end of the T20 World Cup. In September, he had stated that he would retire following the Champions Trophy, but following his non-selection it remains to be seen what his decision will be.

He’s playing all right. Was decent recently in the West Indies.
No my issue is with the age.any team cant have oldies after certain age say 36/37 in any format how ever they are performing .it hinders the young player progression and team stability. You can see the issue with India as rohit , kohli are done with all formats but youngsters are not encouraged .due to that India dont have much hopes on ct.

Litton has done nothing in ODI cricket of late. Very poor form and , deservedly, axed.

Selection of Mustafizur over Shoriful was more surprising for me.
Yeah true. I was mostly surprised because he has always been part of their white-ball teams in recent years.

Mustafizur is their biggest bowler. He has delivered for them in big tournaments. And Shoriful has been really poor this year statistically.

Jaker Ali seems like a good find for Bangladesh. Ofcourse there is a difference between performing against West Indies and performing against good teams. But for someone starting his international career, he played a number of good knocks for Bangladesh on their last tour of the Caribbean. Particularly in the test series.

Mustafizur, Nahid Rana, Taskin.

This is not a bad pace attack. Above all, it has variety and isn't one-dimensional.

Looks like their board played a prank on Shakib.

He’s gone probably because of political reasons maybe?

Not sure.

Shakib is done. So is Tamim who chose not to return and retire. This will be Mushys and Mahmudullahs last tournament. Things comes to an end. Liton Das being left out isn’t political decision so don’t twist it like your propaganda specialist news media. Mr Das has been ultra poor last many odi series, in his last 7 or so ODI matches he has not got out of single digits score. Deserves to be dropped.

What am more unhappy about is Hasan Mahmud being left out of the squad. He is much more experienced than Nahid and Tanzim, a good economical, wicket to wicket bowler also bowls well at the death. He should’ve been picked instead of one of the openers Tanzid or Parvez or picked over Tanzim. 5 pacers would’ve been better. Pitches will be flat. Then again Tanzid and Parvez did quite well last bpl, so let’s see what happens.

My XI for the first match.
Soumya
Shanto
Mehidy
Mushy
Tawhid
Mahmudullah
Jaker
Nasum
Taskin
Mustafizur
Nahid

Personally I would’ve taken Liton Das over Parvez who hasn’t played ODI’s matches. Yes Liton has been poor in odis for while but still a quality experienced player on his day can take any bowling apart, does well against India. Debuting a newbie in a icc event makes no sense to me especially when you have other experienced options, but that’s BD selectors for you.

Yes. I also think Litton should've been selected. He is experienced.

Anyway, all the best to Team BD. Would be nice if they can win at least 1 game.

Bang looks pretty weak without their two best cricketers (Shakib and Tamim). But they have a few good names that can be blooded and will help the team in future. The likes of Rishad, Saif, Towhid and the opener Tanzim/Tanzid are good finds. Litton, Mushfiq and Mahmudullah are still doing well.

Don't worry. Pakistan did the same in world cup and it was bad experience so you are not alone.

Najmul Hossain Shanto at the press conference before departing for Pakistan for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025:

"We are going with the target of becoming champions," Najmul told reporters at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium on Wednesday ahead of his team's departure for the global tournament. "I think all the eight teams here deserve to be champions. These eight are quality teams. I have a belief that our team has the capability [of winning the tournament]."

"In such tournaments, challenges and added pressure are always there. I expect the pitches in Pakistan to be 300+ wickets. If we bat first, we need to put up such scores. Even while defending, we will need to defend such scores. In Dubai, conditions vary at different times. Still, I think scores will be around 260-280. It's tough to predict exact numbers, but historically, that's how it has been. We will analyze how many runs are needed on a given day or how many we need to restrict the opposition to."

"Even though I couldn't play matches, there were positive aspects to it. I practiced regularly and worked on my fitness. I was able to prepare well during the BPL. If everything goes well, I hope the tournament will be good."

"In the last ODI match, I played a good innings against Afghanistan. Last year, I scored a decent number of runs, but my strike rate wasn't quite up to the mark. I believe I am a better batter than that. My performance in the ODI format has been going well. I will be playing a match after a long time. Here, match scenario practice is happening, and it will continue today as well. There are also practice matches ahead. I have been playing this format since childhood, so adjustment is not an issue."

"I don't think the coach meant anything specific. Each format has its variations. However, the way the batters played, the wicket was good, and the conditions we will be playing in might have even better wickets. The batters have prepared well, and it is important to play a long innings. A score of 50-60 needs to be converted into 100-120. In terms of preparation, we are in a good position. We still have 6-7 days in hand, and within this time, we can refine things further."

"Of course, we will miss Shakib. I don't know why this question is being asked. Everyone already knows the answer, and many players have said it before. Of course, we will miss Shakib Bhai; it would have been great if he was here. This question has been answered many times. I don't think it's relevant to talk about this before a tournament. Whoever gets the responsibility will have to play Shakib's role."

"Both (Mushfiqur and Mahmudullah) are important players and played in the last Champions Trophy. Their experience is certainly valuable. However, as a captain, I don't want to rely on any specific player. We should be able to play as a team. Whoever plays should take responsibility and contribute to winning the game. Riyad Bhai and Mushfiq Bhai's experience should be shared with everyone on the field."

Shakib hasn't been good in ages as a batter and also got banned for chucking, have you not been watching?

Miraz announced as Tigers’ vice-captain for Champions Trophy

Bangladesh all-rounder Mehedi Hasan Miraz has been handed the vice-captaincy for the upcoming Champions Trophy in UAE and Pakistan. Miraz had captained the side during the West Indies Tests and ODI and with regular skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto's return to the side following injury, Miraz will now act as Shanto's deputy in the event.

With the squad set to depart on the early hours of Friday, BCB has issued a press release to communicate Miraz's new role.

The BCB press release also said that pacers Khaled Ahmed and Hasan Mahmud will go to Dubai on Saturday to train with the Bangladesh side. Both pacers will however to Bangladesh following the opening match against India on February 20.

While speaking on a sports media outlet, former India cricketer Wasim Jaffer:

“We've only seen probably Shakib [Al Hasan] with that 2019 [ODI] World Cup where he was a standout player but I don't know if it's the pressure that gets to them or they put too much pressure on themselves, they just don't turn up.”

“Even the shot selection we've seen today was very disappointing."

"Mushfiq [Mushfiqur] playing that shot, Mahmudullah playing that wild shot. And this is a must-win game. You want them to step up in these kinds of games and make themselves count. So that's been the story in the ICC events, unfortunately.”

And former Blackcaps pacer Shane Bond added:

“I like the look of their bowling attack, They have got the heat, they have got the left-armer [Mustafizur Rahman] which New Zealand and a team like England doesn't have. The spinners are good.”

“Also the fine margins… they missed chances. If you miss those run-out chances or those dropped catches, they are the difference between winning or losing a game. If they had taken those chances, this game could have been completely different. There is a lot to work with with their bowling attack. I think their batting in the end was the problem.”

BCB is probably the worst board out there when it comes to planning. These guys were playing T20 matches right before ODI tournament, and they will play ODI matches right before another T20 tournament.

There definitely a lot of things they can improve and work on, however, they are too busy just pocketing all the sponsors money.
