[PICTURES] ICC Champions Trophy 2025: India announce a 15-member squad

Then why is he dropped?
1. Highest ranked Indian ODI bowler.
2. Average or 24 in ODIs.

What is really really strange is that Indian Management has indicated that Harshit Rana is being considered as backup to Bumrah.

seems to be odd and fishy.

Averages 38 in the last 15 ODIs, was rubbish in the latest ICC event and had a very low impact rating.

Pace has dropped a lot since he started playing regularly and does not have the accuracy to compensate.

Wasn’t he the second best bowler in recent Aus test series?
He looked decent enough.
Strange tactics to prefer Arshdeep and Harshit Rana. Harshit Rana over Siraj. Really? That too 4 weeks before ICC! Lollll

Test matches have little to do with ODI bowling. Play Mir Hamza, Abbas and Khurram in ODIs and youll see the difference.

Ok… Arshdeep and Harshit Rana are better ODI bowlers right now and should have been preferred. 🤣💦

I am GLAD he is not there. Siraj takes a lot of top order wickets, probably just as many as Bumrah.

He doesn't. Don't mix formats. Even in the Test series, he took a lot of inpactless wickets as well.

He's nowhere close to Bumrah or Shami in ODIs.

You keep ignoring the question.
How come Harshit Rana is the backup to Bumrah. Why the sudden urgency to debut him before ICC.

I don't understand whatever point you are trying to make . Siraj is out of form and pace and bowled with a niggle in BGT.

Rana is the next in line and he got a spot here in the series.

Aswin literally trolled Rohit's selection choices and reiterated all the fans points in his argument. Seems aswin is in the revenge mode.He questioned the 3 spinners strategy, nitish reddy absence, Jaiswal as not opener, repeating the failed wc23 template where there was no reliable option at 8 .

Despite usual brainfade selections from rohit, India won due to few individual's brilliance and Bumrah's magic throughout the tournament. Jaiswal was much better than rohit and kohli but was left out.Rinku wasn't picked over useless dube.kuldeep wasn't picked on that awful ny pitch against pak.In odis there is more time to play and all the issues will come out in open unlike t20s.

India have to win 4 out of 5 matches to go through and win the tournament. All 4 matches are in suitable conditions where they will have better team for the condition than the others.

It's probably not the best Indian team but it's not a bad team to win 4/5 games in UAE.

I will prefer a horrible exit from first round than the leeches like rohit, kohli, jadeja, kl playing till wc 27 and doing a long term damage to the team

Dinesh Karthik expressed his opinions about superstar player Rishabh Pant being chosen for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 team instead of Sanju Samson while speaking on a sports media platform show:

"It almost had to happen, isn’t it? It was either Rishabh Pant or Sanju Samson. I know you can look at both of them as pure batters, but I think they have tilted towards Rishabh Pant for just the one reason: because he is a left-hander."

"He can give that differential variable that they are looking for in the batting order. But Sanju Samson was so close, and the fact that he didn’t play in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, I am sure, has played a part in that too."

Sanju not getting a place is pretty surprising.. I think he should have been in the squad..

MS Dhoni-starrer Champions Trophy 2025 Promo Ad breaks internet, says 'When I was captain, it was easy to remain cool but...'

Fans are going gaga over former India captain MS Dhoni's unique avatar in the promo ad for the upcoming Champions Trophy 2025 which is breaking the internet. MS Dhoni MS Dhoni is gearing up to support India in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, as evidenced by his appearance in a lighthearted promotional video for the Champions Trophy. The Champions Trophy 2025 is scheduled to start from February 19. With Champions Trophy just over 20 days away, the promo featuring Dhoni has certainly hyped up the tournament.

In the video, Dhoni is heard saying how tough it will be to remain cool while watching Champions Trophy as a fan unlike when he was team's captain. Reflecting on his own Champions Trophy victory in 2013, he talked about the intense competition of the tournament, stressing that even one loss can lead to elimination. To cope with the anticipated stress and excitement, the legendary captain is seen utilising the fictional "Dhoni Refrigeration System" to keep himself cool during the upcoming event.

“When I was the captain, it was easy to remain cool but it won’t be easy to watch Champions Trophy as a fan. Our team might be strong but if we lose one game, then we’re almost out of the tournament. The temperature has risen so much due to constant tension,” said Dhoni in the promo shared by Star Sports.

Awesome side. Bit like invincible Windies of 80s and Aussies under Ponting. There is no apparent weakness in this side, other than maybe Ravi Jadeja who I think will not make into playing XI.

Whattay team
Indian Team is Rich but not as effective as West Indies in 1980s or Australia in 2000s

Anyone here who feels Varun Chakravarthy should replace Jadeja???
According to reports Bumrah is likely to out of champion trophy so india will definitely change the team before 11 Feb.

But I don't think they will replace bumrah with a spinner when we already have 4 spinners .

Most likely Harshit Rana or DSP siraj will replace him .

Rohit and Virat are washup player's and bumrah is likely out of the tournament ,our tournament will end in group stage .

:kp

Oh still 100x better squad than Pakistan

Jasprit Bumrah update:

Reached Bengaluru last evening
Set to be monitored by BCCI medical team today
To undergo scans, likely to be at NCA for next few days
BCCI medical team will then submit observations to India selectors

Varun Chakravarthy is with India squad in Nagpur ahead of England ODIs. Included in the squad?

No official word yet .

Imagine 20 overs of Kuldeep and Varun against Pakistan

And the 10 of Bumrah. Doubt Pakistan can score 150 against India

Seems jadeja is having minor backspasms as per cricinfo.will be interested case of varun in odis.

Bumrah is out of England ODI and Likely to be out for champion trophy .

@Nikhil_cric @Rajdeep

So Bumrah is out now for both England and champion trophy team .who will replace him - Harshit Rana or Siraj?

:kp
Rana should replace him as he can bat too.siraj can take rest as there is no lanka in ct .He statpadded his wickets with out any impact in bgt

Very sad...nazar lag gya Bumrah bhai ko. We know who gave him nazar though and the people that were unable to digest his success.

Anyway, CT is not a big tournament. I just want him to be fully fit and captain the side in 5 test match against England this summer. Skipping CT or IPL is no bid deal.

I wouldn't be surprised if they first assess whether Bumrah will be fit for IPL if he plays CT.
Most probably he'll be declared unfit for CT and fit for IPL later. Participation in England tour will depend on his fitness post IPL.

Believe it or not, I'm rooting for India to destroy England.

Genuinely. Because the more you destroy England and beat them down, the easier it'll be to win Ashes.

Man what a year it'll be for aus if they win CT, WTC and Ashes and rub it more in india's face 🤣🤣

I don't see what people see in sanju. I see him as very inconsistent who will shine bright once in a while. He will make a century and will be gone missing next multiple innings. We already have Rohit on that role. We don't need another.

It doesn't matter whom you root for. :root

What matters is what Rajdeep speaks. It is as follows:

Bharat will win CT, SA will win WTC finals (entire world will support them) and Australia will win Ashes at home with Root failing to score any runs as usual.

Come now, please dont troll. Not gonna comment on CT atm,

But sa has no chance of winning wtc and even you know that. These guys nearly bottled it vs Pakistan, a team that's ranked at the bottom of the points table.

Afterwards they had to prepare a phatta in tue 2nd test cause they know Pakistan can't outdated any team.

They literally showed the same coward and minnow mentality towards Pakistan that Pakistan shows towards others in home den.

As for root, theirs no need to hate a cricketer who's closing in on the top runs margin.

No more of this rajdeep speaks nonsense. You can be a good poster if you don't act mentally @^@&# all the time.

I think team management has given a role and he is doing that. He could have easily tuk tanked his way to 50. Just a little bit of fine tuning is needed. Approach shouldn't change. May be he can roll the wrists going forward.

Harshit Rana will play instead of Bumrah
Varun may get ahead of Washington if he plays well in ODI matches

Ponting predicts returning India batter to thrive at Champions Trophy

The ICC Hall of Famer is backing the India batter to perform well at the upcoming tournament.

Australia great Ricky Ponting is surprised Shreyas Iyer is not a walk-up start in India's top six and expects the in-form batter to thrive during the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy.

Iyer was a major factor in India's run to the final at the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup on home soil in 2023, with the right-hander amassing 530 runs during the tournament to finish as the seventh leading run-scorer.

But a serious back injury has hampered Iyer in recent times and it was only a late reprieve that allowed the 30-year-old to return to the international fold when he scored an excellent half-century to help propel India to victory in the opening ODI against England in Nagpur on Thursday.

Ponting discussed the return of Iyer with host Sanjana Ganesan on the latest episode of The ICC Review and the former Australia captain believes the damaging batter can prove a key player for India at the Champions Trophy as he will be suited by the conditions.

"He's got the game that will stand up to the white-ball formats, especially in that part of the world," Ponting said of Iyer, on The ICC Review.

"On those wickets - the slower, lower wickets - he's dynamic on those.

"We know how good a hitter of spin bowling he is and teams tend not to bowl a lot of spin at India, but at some stage it's going to come.

"If Shreyas is out in the middle, then he's as good as anyone. So I'm delighted to see him back in their team."

Ponting has been a long-time admirer of Iyer and this showed during the most recent IPL auction when the new Punjab Kings coach splashed INR 26.75 crore on the hard-hitter to clinch his services for the upcoming tournament.

The Australian legend’s show of faith from the auction at the end of last year has already been franked, with Iyer having shown glimpses of his best form at the domestic level with two centuries for Mumbai on either side of the new year.

"I've been a little bit surprised that he's been out of India's side the last couple of years," Ponting added.

"He had a terrific World Cup back in India where he played beautifully in the middle-order and I actually felt then that he'd almost cemented that spot and made that his own.

"Then he had those couple of injuries, obviously injured his back and went out of the side, but his domestic season this year has been brilliant.

"It sort of coincided with what he's done since around (IPL) auction time going forward in domestic cricket, he has been pretty much outstanding."

I pray Bumrah and Shami are not fit for this event. Bumrah played 10 test matches on the bounce. Needs a long break before another 5 test series.

This CT25 surely has to be the last farewell ICC ODI tournament for RS, VK and RJ.

They abuse the captaincy with manipulative squad, team selection, usage of team.
Has anybody ever went to a tournament with a very good available batsmen/option short .even if some one from top 3 is injured rt before the match , kl will be playing as back up (who is in awful form). This team made sure both leeches and kl are playing at any cost.Just for pr purposes they coined non travelling substitute term. It's so sad to see balatant abuse of power.i wish we exit in first round.

Yashashwi dropped from the squad !
This is the guy who's supposed to be better then Travis head 🤣🤣.

Doesn't get a single game in wc 2024, now gets dropped from ct 2025 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣.

As I said jaiswal will only surpass head in runs due to no of games played in the same way Anderson has more wickets then wasim and mcgrath.

He's extremely overrated. He might come good later on but atm sanju and abisheikh are better t20 batters then he is and in odi deapite Gill being bang avg he's been superior to him on current form on odi.

Only in tests jaiswal gets a place atm.

India coach urges pace duo to step up in Bumrah's absence at Champions Trophy

India head coach Gautam Gambhir believes Jasprit Bumrah’s absence from the ICC Champions Trophy squad could be a golden opportunity for the side’s upcoming pace duo.

Speaking to reporters after India sealed their home ODI engagement against England 3-0, Gambhir suggested Bumrah’s absence from the setup for the Champions Trophy could be an opportunity for Harshit Rana and Arshdeep Singh to make a name for themselves.

“Harshit has shown some good signs, Arsh(deep) was also good today. Obviously, you’ll always miss a bowler like Jasprit Bumrah, his quality and stuff. But it’s always good to have Mohammed Shami back with his quality,” Gambhir said.

Bumrah, India’s bowling lynchpin, was a part of the Champions Trophy squad, but was ruled out due to a lower back injury.

Harshit, who made his ODI debut against England, was originally included in the ODI series as a reserve bowler. He picked up six wickets from his three outings, at an average of 24.33, and impressed the team management enough to pick him as Bumrah’s replacement for the Champions Trophy.

Meanwhile Arshdeep, already a regular in the T20I setup, featured in the the third ODI, and looked in good touch with his new-ball burst, getting the breakthroughs of Phil Salt and Ben Duckett in what was his ninth ODI.

Gambhir thinks the duo, still inexperienced in the format, could play a great supporting act to Shami, himself a returnee from the injury list, during the global event.

“So someone like Harshit or Arshdeep will have to put his hand up in the Champions Trophy along with Mohammed Shami. Someone missing out could be a great opportunity for someone else too," Gambhir noted.

“That’s the way the sport goes, and hopefully these guys can put their hands up and deliver.”

Discussing India’s strategies during the series, Gambhir stated that the side looked to rest and rotate players in the leadup to the Champions Trophy, and discussed the impact made by Shreyas Iyer against England.

“On Shreyas Iyer, he wasn’t supposed to be benched throughout the series. We wanted to give Yashasvi (Jaiswal) a go in the first game and see what he can bring to the table, because he was in really good form in Australia," Gambhir said.

Iyer was initially not meant to play the opening ODI of the series, before getting late call up due to an injury to Virat Kohli. He featured in all three games and scoring 181 runs at an impressive strike rate of 123.12.

Gambhir hinted that Iyer would continue to feature for the side at No.4 at the Champions Trophy.

“We always knew that Shreyas will be an important player for us at No.4. Be it the World Cup, or forget about even the World Cup, he is always important for us. So when you’ve got three games, you want to rotate your players a bit," he added.

“Today, we could’ve played Shami but we wanted to give Arsh(deep) a go. When you’ve got Champions Trophy around the corner, you want to maximise these opportunities and everyone a go. But Shreyas was always in the scheme of things.”

India’s Champions Trophy campaign kicks off against Bangladesh on 20 February in Dubai.

India squad: Rohit Sharma (c), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant, Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Kuldeep Yadav, Harshit Rana, Mohd. Shami, Arshdeep Singh, Ravindra Jadeja, Varun Chakaravarthy.

But once you fix your XI you are not going to change unless there is an injury. You just need one back up. Sundar was not necessary.
Mtmnt were worried about too many lefties in spinners and so had one off spinner ar instead of dropping him.Rohit got two birds at one shot in the name of varun.

Bhogle on his ct preview although doing as usual pr drama said one very interesting thing. India picked 5 spinners as they r thinking used pitches will be tired after so many ilt matches, end of season and ct matches. He pointed out 130 was winning scores in the middle of ilt but again pitches were made fresh to chase 180s again. If its correct ( as per the stats it is ) we are in big soup 🤣

Very strong squad , the best in the competition , strong and in form batting line up, full of genuine all rounders and very mean spinners . Good batters all the till # 9.

PLaying 5 spinners is not gonna be a great idea. I think 3 are enough. with 2 pacers.

Ravi Ashwin disagrees with India's decision to pick a spin-heavy squad for the Champions Trophy while speaking on his YouTube channel:

“What I don’t understand is the number of spinners we are taking to Dubai."

“Five spinners and we have made Yashasvi Jaiswal sit out."

“Yeah I understand that we take three or four spinners for a tour. But five spinners in Dubai? I don’t know. I think we are one spinner too many if not two."

“The two left-arm spinners are your best all-rounders alongside Hardik Pandya. So both Axar Patel and Ravindra Jadeja are going to play. Hardik will also play and Kuldeep will play. If you want Varun Chakravarthy in the team, then you will have to make a pacer sit out and use Hardik as your second pacer. Else you will have to drop a spinner to bring in a third seamer."

“I am honestly glad that I am not in a position of explaining things to Yashasvi Jaiswal. If I was the coach or captain then what will I even tell him?"

“I raise this question many times what are you messaging to a player?"

“Yashasvi was bringing water for the players. I was thinking what would be going on in his mind? He would have been happy that he would be in the Champions Trophy team. And now suddenly he is not in the team. It’s the same for anybody who misses out."

Rishabh Pant was injured by a shot from Hardik Pandya

Champions Trophy: Arshdeep Singh With More Variations Likely Starter Ahead Of Harshit Rana

Harshit Rana has been the flavour of the season as far as India's emerging crop of fast bowlers is concerned but one of head coach Gautam Gambhir's finds is unlikely to start in India's playing eleven in the Champions Trophy with Arshdeep Singh still considered way ahead in terms of talent and quality. The Indian team management gave Harshit all three ODIs against England, and if one is absolutely fair to the burly 6-feet-2-inch tall Delhi speedster, he has not looked out of place.

While Arshdeep enjoys a better economy rate of 5.17 compared to Harshit's 6.95 per over, it is the former's ability to bring the ball back into the right-handers during the Powerplay overs that will tilt the scales in his favour in the tournament starting February 19.

Arshdeep, who also has only nine ODIs since he made his debut in a short ODI series in New Zealand in 2022, will be ahead on most counts when one looks at the parameters that would be taken into account based on the conditions available at the Dubai International Stadium.

"Harshit has improved by leaps and bounds in terms of reducing his weight and has become sharper in terms of speed. But if I had to choose one among the two as Mohammed Shami's partner, it has to be Arshdeep as he can swing the ball both ways and is a left-armer.

"I would be a trifle surprised if Harshit starts ahead of Arshdeep," former national selector Devang Gandhi, who has also seen Rana from close quarters as Delhi Ranji coach, told PTI.

India will start with a clash against Bangladesh on February 20 here.

It is understood that Harshit started in all three games against England because the team management, currently helmed by Gautam Gambhir, wanted to check out if his protege could be considered as Jasprit Bumrah's replacement, and also this was the only series where Shami's fitness could also have been tested in real terms.

Hence, Arshdeep was rested in the first two games and only got a chance when the think-tank decided to rest Shami, who had played back to back ODIs.

Former India opener WV Raman, one of the most respected coaches in the country, feels experience will be a key factor which should go in favour of the Punjab pacer.

"Arshdeep, due to his relative experience and the left arm being a different dimension, has an advantage. The Dubai track will be decent for the pacers," Raman observed.

He also raised a key point about playing multi-nation event compared to bilateral series.

"A bit more experience always helps in ICC events, which is a different ball game from bilaterals. In ICC event, you will play different opposition every day and accordingly an experienced bowler changes his plans," said Raman, who has also been India U-19 batting coach and head coach of the national women's team.

Gandhi, on his part, also pointed out the options Arshdeep brings to the table in various phases of the match.

"Harshit hits deck and gets it to move a bit both ways after pitching along with those effective occasional heavy balls in the range of mid 140s. But when you have Arshdeep, he can swing the new ball and also use angles of the crease effectively when he comes round the wicket during death overs," he explained.

An NCA Level 2 coach, who had watched the India U-19 team play in Dubai during the Asia Cup, had observed that there is at least five to six inches more bounce on offer at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.

"If you have that shade extra bounce for a swing bowler then playing Arshdeep is a no-brainer. Harshit is a good talent but if Shami is fit, then Arshdeep, for variation, experience and game awareness partners him," the former NCA coach said.

Dinesh Karthik, while speaking on his show for a sports media outlet:

“I think it will be Mohamed Shami and Harshit Rana. If Bumrah is unfit, Harshit will come into the squad. The two left-arm spinners, Axar Patel and (Ravindra) Jadeja, it’s only fair to say they are all-rounders, and that is the right thing to say. And then we have Kuldeep, and then we have Hardik Pandya as the sixth bowler."

India Set to Play Champions Trophy on 'Fresh' Dubai Pitches After 'Specific Instructions' During UAE's ILT20: Report

India might not have to deal with slow and deteriorating pitches at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium during their league-stage matches in the Champions Trophy. According to a report from PTI, two fresh pitches have been preserved specifically for India’s games in the marquee tournament, despite the stadium hosting 15 games in the recently-concluded ILT20.

India’s Champions Trophy campaign begins on February 20 against Bangladesh, followed by a highly anticipated clash against Pakistan on February 23, and concluding their group stage against New Zealand on March 2. All three fixtures will take place in Dubai, a venue that has seen heavy cricketing action recently, including the Women’s T20 World Cup, the men’s U-19 Asia Cup, and the ILT20.

During the ILT20, the Dubai stadium hosted 15 matches, including two important knockout games. To ensure quality pitch conditions for the Champions Trophy, two of the stadium’s 10 match strips were deliberately kept unused during the ILT20. A source informed PTI, "There are 10 match strips at the DICS. During the league stage, there was specific instruction that those two won’t be used now and needed to be kept fresh for the Champions Trophy."

The decision to keep the pitches fresh is intended to avoid low and slow conditions caused by overuse, which could have slowed the game. The fresh pitches are expected to provide a fair balance, benefiting both batters and bowlers alike.

Historically, Dubai's pitches have been pacer-friendly, offering fast bowlers movement and bounce. With the use of fresh pitches, however, spinners – especially those with a quicker pace – could emerge as game-changers. The conditions are expected to offer a balanced contest between bat and ball.

India has selected five spinners for the tournament, including Varun Chakaravarthy, who replaced Yashasvi Jaiswal in the 15-member squad. Chakaravarthy made his ODI debut earlier this month during the series against England. The other spinners in the squad are Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, and Washington Sundar.
