Messi’s Barcelona heartbreak revealed: From his son’s tears, to refusing to go to trial - full truth behind ‘brutal’ transfer saga

Lionel Messi has revealed the heartbreak of his decision to leave Barcelona – and why he ultimately chose to stay with the club in a world exclusive with Goal.

The 33-year-old, who has spent 20 years at the Catalan club, dropped the bombshell news on Barcelona in late August that he intended to leave on a free transfer.

However, Barca refused to recognise the break in his contract, as they claimed the moment for using it had passed in June, and so a stalemate began in which the Argentina international tried to find a way out.

However, Messi has accepted he must stay at Camp Nou to avoid dragging his beloved club to court, but not until after a desperately sad couple of weeks.

“When I communicated my wish to leave to my wife and children, it was a brutal drama,” Messi told Goal.

“The whole family began crying, my children did not want to leave Barcelona, nor did they want to change schools.

“But I looked further afield and I want to compete at the highest level, win titles, compete in the Champions League. You can win or lose in it, because it is very difficult, but you have to compete.

“At least compete for it and let us not fall apart in Rome, Liverpool, Lisbon. All that led me to think about that decision that I wanted to carry out.”

However, that ambition to accept a new challenge was thwarted by Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu, whom Messi claims reneged on a promise he could leave

“I thought and was sure that I was free to leave, the president always said that at the end of the season I could decide if I stayed or not,” he said.

“Now they cling to the fact that I did not say it before June 10, when it turns out that on June 10 we were competing for La Liga in the middle of this awful coronavirus and this disease altered all the season.

“And this is the reason why I am going to continue in the club. Now I am going to continue in the club because the president told me that the only way to leave was to pay the €700 million (£624m/$823m) clause, and that this is impossible.”

There was only one way out if Messi was to leave: taking Barcelona to court. But the six-time Ballon d’Or winner refuses to take that route, and so will remain at the club for another 10 months.

“There was another way and it was to go to trial,” he added. “I would never go to court against Barca because it is the club that I love, which gave me everything since I arrived.

“It is the club of my life, I have made my life here.

“Barca gave me everything and I gave it everything. I know that it never crossed my mind to take Barca to court.”

Messi opened up to Goal on the heartbreaking conversation he had with his son, Thiago, who didn’t want to leave, while praising his wife Antonella for standing by his side through all of the backlash for his desire to leave Barca.

“Mateo is still little and he doesn’t realise what it means to go somewhere else and make your life a few years elsewhere,” he said.

“Thiago, he is older. He heard something on TV and found out something and asked.

“I didn’t want him to know anything about being forced to leave, to have to live in a new school, or make new friends.

“He cried to me and said ‘let’s not go’. I repeat that it was hard, really.

“It was understandable. It happened to me. It is very difficult to make a decision.

“I love Barcelona and I’m not going to find a better place than here anywhere. Still, I have the right to decide. I was going to look for new goals and new challenges. And tomorrow I could go back, because here in Barcelona I have everything.

“My son, my family, they grew up here and are from here. There was nothing wrong with wanting to leave. I needed it, the club needed it and it was good for everyone.

“My wife, with all the pain of her soul, supported and accompanied me.”

Messi will now prepare to start the season under new Barcelona coach Ronald Koeman, as the club bounce back from a dire 2019-20 in which they failed to win La Liga, the Champions League or reach the final of the Copa del Rey.

Oof.

What a mess.

Barcelona clearly will become the most hated club in football now after this fiasco.

No sympathies with them.

Didnt think he would leave this season.

Poor from Barca, as they are forcing a great player who has been loyal to stay.

I can see Messi not playing well or becoming injured.

If messi stays, it will be a completely misserable season for him and i think they could have just sold him, MC would shell out £100m for it. Barca would regret it and know they should have sold him - but will be 34 then, and would have wasted one year of messis final and end innings, which would be a shame for all football fans.

The romance has ended, he should have gone and the club should have realised that things will never be the same again.

I don't think it's over yet. Barca are trying to win his heart but Messi's heart isn't with them. If I'm not mistaken we still have 4 weeks until the end of transfer window.

It wouldn't be rational to keep Messi at the club out of his own will because what’s the point in keeping someone who doesn’t have their head in the right place.

You could see from Messi’s body language in la Liga and CL matches. He just doesn’t want to be there.

If I was Barca, get 3 good players from city and cash in Messi for £100m to £200m.

All the money in the world and his lawyers missed reading the deadline date in his contract.

Serves him right.

Only City can afford him but they wont pay any transfer fee as his wages will be over £1million a week.

Also this way, Messi can ask for a higher wage if he goes on a free.

Real to win La Liga and Barca to come 3rd.

Messi has played his last card with this interview. He clearly doesn't believe he can win UCL with this Barcelona team. I'd wonder what is the point of keeping a player who does not believe in the team anymore. No matter how professional and competitive.Messi is, but this fall out brings a lot of negative energy within the Barcelona group.

In my opinion, one year of loyalty bonus and wages being wasted. Should have looked to rebuilt.

Barcelona's all-time top scorer Lionel Messi has returned to training following his failed attempt to force a move away from the club.

Messi, 33, submitted a transfer request on 25 August but said last Friday he would stay because it is "impossible" for any team to pay his release clause.

It is the first time the Argentine has trained with his team-mates since the arrival of new manager Ronald Koeman.

Barcelona begin their La Liga campaign against Villarreal on 27 September.

Messi failed to attend the club's testing for Covid-19 on 30 August and has been absent from training since sending a fax informing the club of his wish to exercise a clause in his contract which he believed would allow him to leave for free with immediate effect.

Both Barcelona and La Liga insisted that clause was no longer valid - with any club wishing to buy him required to pay a release clause of 700m euros (£624m).

La Liga president Javier Tebas said at the launch of the 2020-21 La Liga season on Monday he was "never seriously worried" Messi would leave Barcelona this summer.

"We want Messi to be with us. He is the best player in the history of football and we want him to end his career in La Liga," said Tebas.

"He has been with us for 20 years and we are so pleased he is staying with us and not going to another league.

This has ended ended as bad as the Greyjoy rebellion.

He doesn't have much time left anyway. I am guessing he is close to retirement. He is 33 now.

Great players have too much pride and competitiveness. There is no way Messi will let this saga impact his on-field performance. He will put this behind him and have another smashing season.

Messi didn’t show any diplomacy in his interview and didn’t hold back because he knows that the entire Barca fan base is on his side.

A lot can change in 12 months time so there is no guarantee that he will walk away next summer.

I still back Barcelona to have a very strong season especially of Koeman does not hold back Fati. This kid has scary potential and is the best teenager in the world.

He is absolutely ready to start on the LW.

Lionel Messi plays for Barcelona in pre-season friendly win

Lionel Messi made his first appearance for Barcelona since his failed attempt to leave the club, playing in their friendly with Gimnastic de Tarragona.

The 33-year-old Argentine submitted a transfer request in August but decided to stay last week because no club would be able to afford his release clause.

Messi started in the 3-1 win over third-tier Nastic after the club confirmed he would remain as captain.

He was replaced along with the other starters at half-time.

Ousmane Dembele opened the scoring with Antoine Griezmann and Phillipe Coutinho netting penalties.

Messi, Barcelona's all-time leading goalscorer, believed he had a clause in his contract which would allow him to leave for free and did not begin pre-season training.

Barcelona and La Liga insisted that clause was no longer valid - with any club wishing to buy him required to pay a release clause of 700m euros (£624m) - and Messi returned to training after saying he would not take the club to court.

Barca's season starts on Sunday, 27 September with a home game against Villarreal in La Liga.

As someone who never watched soccer

Am disappointed in my myself for following all this drama because nothing happened

Barcelona forward Lionel Messi has topped the Forbes list for highest-earning footballers in 2020.

Forbes estimated Messi’s yearly earnings at $126m (£97.2m) with Juventus’ Cristiano Ronaldo second on $117m (£90.3m).

Neymar was in third with Paris St-Germain team-mate Kylian Mbappe fourth.

Three Premier League players – Mohamed Salah, Paul Pogba and David de Gea – made the top 10, as did Real Madrid and Wales forward Gareth Bale.

Welshman Bale came eighth in the list at $29m (£22.4m) despite a disappointing 2019-20 season, on a personal level, which saw him fall out with Real boss Zinedine Zidane and only feature in two of his club’s last 14 matches of the campaign.

Liverpool forward Salah was fifth, ahead of Manchester United midfielder Pogba in sixth, with United goalkeeper De Gea in 10th.

Barcelona forward Antoine Griezmann was seventh and Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski was ninth.

The top three were in the same order as in 2019, although Mbappe rose three places from seventh to fourth.

Argentine Messi, 33, tried to leave Barcelona this summer and submitted a transfer request in August, but decided to stay because no club would be able to afford his release clause.

Footballer Lionel Messi can register his name as a trademark after a nine-year legal battle, the EU's top court has ruled.

The European Court of Justice dismissed an appeal from Spanish cycling company Massi and the EU's intellectual property office, EUIPO.

The Barcelona footballer first applied to trademark his surname as a sportswear brand in 2011.

But Massi argued the similarity between their logos would cause confusion.

Liverpool FC fails in bid to trademark city's name
The European Court of Justice (ECJ) said that the star player's reputation could be taken into account when weighing up whether the public would be able to tell the difference between the two brands.

In doing so, it upheld a ruling by the EU's General Court in 2018 that the footballer was too well known for confusion to arise.

Massi, which sells cycle clothing and equipment, was successful in its initial challenge to the Barcelona striker's application. But it lost out when Lionel Messi brought an appeal to the General Court, which ruled in his favour.

Messi, 33, who wears the number 10 shirt, has been crowned world football player of the year a record six times and is the world's highest-paid soccer player, according to Forbes.

Lionel Messi scored in a joint record 16th Champions League season and 17-year-old Pedri netted his first senior goal as Barcelona beat Ferencvaros.

The Barcelona defender Gerard Pique has torn into the club over their handling of the Lionel Messi contract situation, which resulted in the forward attempting to leave.

The criticism comes on the eve of the first clásico against Real Madrid this season and two days after the 33-year-old Pique signed a new three-year deal, with a vote of no confidence against the board also imminent.

The club president, Josep Bartomeu, was the target of a scathing interview by Messi and the relationship between the two seems irreparable, something that has left Pique astounded.

“I ask myself: ‘How can it be that the best-ever player to have played the game, who we have been lucky enough to enjoy, wakes up one day and sends a burofax [recorded delivery mail] because he feels like he’s not being listened to?” Pique told La Vanguardia newspaper.

“It’s all too confrontational. What’s going on? Messi deserves everything; the new stadium should be named after him first and then the sponsor. We should preserve our figureheads, not underappreciate them. It really gets to me.”

The defender also addressed reports that Bartomeu knew the club hired a social media agency to criticise the players this year. Bartomeu has denied the allegations.

“I, as a Barça player, see that my club have spent money, money they’re now asking us for [in salary reductions], to criticise us – and I’m not talking about criticising people outside the club, but current players; it’s atrocious.

“I asked [Bartomeu] for an explanation and he said, ‘Gerard, I didn’t know about it’, and I believed him. But then you see that the person who was responsible for doing this is still working at the club. That hurts me a lot. And I’m saying that here because I’ve already said it to the president, too.”

Ronald Koeman has dismissed claims that Lionel Messi is difficult to manage before their Champions League Group G match against Dynamo Kyiv.

Former Barca manager Quique Setien suggested that he found the forward hard to handle during his brief tenure.

"I don't agree [with Setien] but I respect his opinion and what he has experienced," said Koeman.

Messi put in a transfer request in August but was unable to force a move from Barcelona.

"Messi is a very good player, the best in the world," Koeman said. "I see his ambition but he is not a player I have difficulty managing.

"Every coach is different - but for me, he is the captain and I talk to him every week about things in the dressing room and on the pitch and there is a good relationship," Koeman said.

Setien was dismissed on 17 August, three days after Barca's humiliating 8-2 Champions League quarter-final defeat by Bayern Munich, with Koeman stepping in.

Barcelona have made a strong start in this season's Champions League, beating Juventus and Ferencvaros to sit top of Group G - bringing some relief from their poor La Liga form.

Koeman's side are 12th, having not won any of their past four games, and losing 3-1 at home to Real Madrid on 24 October.

"I understand the criticism," he said. "Two points from the last four games is not good and it is normal for criticism to come. I accept it and keep working to improve things."

Koeman also said goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen is in contention to return after recovering from a knee injury.

Their opponents, Dynamo Kyiv, have taken only a point from their first two Champions League games. They are top of the Ukranian Premier League, four points clear of Shakhtar Donetsk.

Lionel Messi: La Liga president Javier Tebas 'ready' for Barcelona star's departure

La Liga president Javier Tebas says he is "ready" for the exit of Lionel Messi - while criticising Manchester City, a club he believes could sign him.

Messi submitted a transfer request in August at Barcelona - who he joined as a 13-year-old - but backed down after they refused to sanction his release.

The forward had fallen out with Josep Maria Bartomeu, who subsequently resigned as Barca president in October.

Tebas wants Messi to stay in Spain but feels La Liga would cope without him.

He argued that the competition had continued to thrive following Neymar's 2017 departure from Barcelona to Paris St-Germain, and Cristiano Ronaldo's 2018 move from Real Madrid to Juventus.

"We would prefer Messi to stay in La Liga but Ronaldo and Neymar left and we have not noticed any difference," Tebas said. "We are ready."

The Argentina international, 33, would be available on a free transfer at the end of this season.

Tebas indicated that Messi's likeliest Premier League destination, if he went to England, would be Etihad Stadium - although club sources have pointed out that no-one at City has ever spoken about signing Messi.

La Liga's president has repeatedly criticised City, having previously made numerous allegations about their structure, including accusing them of financial doping, before they were cleared of serious FFP breaches by the Court of Arbitration for Sport in July.

He aimed more criticism at them when he spoke on Tuesday.

Tebas said: "It seems the only club in Premier League that talks about registering Messi is Manchester City, who compete outside the rules. I am not the only one saying this.

"I am not too worried about them. I have criticised what they do so many times. Doing it one more time makes no difference. City is neither affected by Covid or pandemics or anything because they are financed differently and it is impossible to fight against that."

City opted not to respond to Tebas' comments, although it is understood they are wrestling with the financial impact of the coronavirus pandemic - limiting manager Pep Guardiola to a net spend of £31m during the most recent transfer window.

Lionel Messi expressed his frustration at Barcelona again after being quizzed on scathing comments made by Antoine Griezmann’s former agent.

Messi’s spat with the club over the summer was played out publicly as he expressed his intention to leave, with Manchester City holding talks over a deal for one of football’s greatest ever players.

Lionel Messi says he is tired of being blamed for problems at Barcelona after he was accused by Antoine Griezmann's former agent of making life difficult for the French striker at the La Liga club.

Eric Olhats had accused Messi of having too much control at the club, saying his "reign of terror" had made life difficult for Griezmann to adapt since his arrival last year.

Messi returned to Barcelona from international duty with Argentina on Wednesday where he was met by reporters at the airport.

"The truth is that I'm a little tired of always being the problem for everything at the club," Messi was quoted as saying by Spanish media.

"On top of that, after a 15-hour flight, I had the tax authorities waiting for me. It's madness."

With one year left on his contract, Messi tried to activate a disputed clause to leave Barcelona for free in the off-season, but eventually decided to stay as he did not want to face a legal battle with the club.

Barcelona have been in turmoil since Bayern Munich humiliated the Spanish side 8-2 in the Champions League quarter-finals last season. Club president Josep Maria Bartomeu resigned last month ahead of a vote of no confidence.

Messi has also had his run-ins with the Spanish tax authorities in recent years.

He was handed a 21-month prison sentence in 2016 and ordered to pay a fine of 2m euros (£1.8m) for defrauding the Spanish government of 4.2m euros over income earned from image rights.

However, the 33-year-old did not serve any jail time after exchanging his sentence for a 250,000 euros fine, as in Spain defendants without a previous conviction are permitted to serve any sentence of under two years on probation

Manchester City want to sign Barcelona star Lionel Messi in January according to English newspaper The Sun and cited by Diario Sport.

City were heavily linked with Messi last summer after the Argentine publicly stated his desire to leave the club with whom he’s spent his entire professional career.

Messi ended up staying at Camp Nou due to a contractual misunderstanding, but hasn’t seemed completely content ever since.

The 33 year-old desperately wants to win another Champions League title and doesn’t believe in the sporting project set forth in Catalonia.

This is where City come into the picture. The English club are reportedly preparing an offer between €55m and €60m to sign Messi in January, six months ahead of the expiration of his contract in the summer.

City are said to be considering including centre-back Eric Garcia in the deal, a player Barcelona have long held an interest in re-signing. The Catalan left Barcelona for City in 2017 and is keen to return.

City believe that Barcelona will be tempted to accept their proposal given the financial problems the club are going through due to COVID-19.

Messi was accosted by reporters upon his return to Barcelona after this past international break and asked about reported problems in his relationship with Antoine Griezmann. The Argentine replied angrily, saying he was “tired of always being the problem at this club.”

Messi is said, however, to be waiting to see who will be elected in Barcelona’s presidential elections on January 24th. For City, Messi’s signing could revitalise a title challenge that has been flagging in recent times.

Messi, despite evidently slowing down as he begins to enter his mid-30s, registered 31 goals and 27 assists last season, from 44 appearances. The season before he scored 51 goals and contributed 20 assists from 50 games.

Pep Guardiola: I want Lionel Messi to end his career at Barcelona

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola says he wants to see Lionel Messi finish his career at Barcelona because of his own strong bond with the Spanish club.

There was widespread speculation this week that, after signing a new two-year contract at City, Guardiola would step up his pursuit of Messi, who seemed certain to leave the Nou Camp in the summer after a public falling-out with the club.

Guardiola, however, says his own hope is for the legendary Argentina forward to complete his career in Spain rather than make what would be a world-record transfer to the Premier League or elsewhere.

"Leo Messi is a player for Barcelona and if you're asking me for my opinion, I am a person who has a huge gratitude to Barcelona for what they did for me as a player, they gave me absolutely everything, from the start, from my time in the academy," he said.

"So I want him to finish his career there. That is what I want. As a Barcelona fan, I would like for Leo to finish there.

"But this year he finishes his contract and after that, we don't know what will happen and what is in his mind.

"Right now he is a Barcelona player and the transfer market will not open until June or July, so we have our own games and achievements before then. I cannot say anything else."

Guardiola's next game with City is a Saturday evening trip to play Tottenham, a side who go into the weekend fixtures second in the Premier League and just a point behind Leicester City.

When asked what he thought of Jose Mourinho's performance as Spurs manager so far, Guardiola said: "Really good, as he has always done in all of his clubs."

He was more expansive, however, when asked about Tottenham's chances of winning a first Premier League title this season, saying: "Their form speaks for itself and of course they are (title) contenders. The quality has always been there, they have qualified for the Champions League for five years.

"It's a fantastic squad."

Lionel Messi: Manchester City will not try to sign Barcelona forward, says Semra Hunter

Manchester City have ended their pursuit of Barcelona forward Lionel Messi, according to Spanish football expert Semra Hunter.

City were understood to be the frontrunners to sign Messi last summer as he demanded to leave Barcelona during a bitter contract dispute, which culminated with the 33-year-old reluctantly staying put at the Nou Camp.

Messi is out of contract at the end of the season, making him free to negotiate with other clubs from January and appearing to make a reunion with former manager Pep Guardiola all the more likely.

However, the Premier League club are no longer keen to sign the six-time Ballon d'Or winner, says Hunter, with his age and €100m-a-year wages (£89m) thought to be a deal breaker for City.

"I have it on good authority from someone close to the situation that Manchester City are not going to bid for Lionel Messi," Hunter told Sky Sports News. "Based on the information I have, as of today, that door is closed.

"They have their reasons for this. They have two reasons for this: age and finances. Talking about age, he is heading into the twilight years of his career and you'll be bringing on board a Messi that is different to what we've seen for the last 17 years with Barcelona. Even he himself has said that he is getting closer to the dreaded r-word of retirement more so than anyone cares to admit.

"That goes hand-in-hand with finances because even though he would be able to join for free, his wages are astronomically high - he is earning about 100m euros-a-year. That would be a huge financial burden for any club to take on, especially given the fact that we are in the middle of a global pandemic.

"Economically, everyone has taken a hit and clubs are not immune from this either. We've seen in the transfer window over the past summer that clubs are changing their strategies. Some of them, like Real Madrid, didn't even buy a single player, most of them are trying to sell, some of them are trying to bide their time and wait so they can make bigger transfers some time down the road. And 100m euros is a huge stress from a wage-bill point of view.

"Either you have to offload some of the highest earners or you have to sell off players or make other tweaks in other parts of the club depending on whatever formula a club would want to use to bring Messi on board.

"Perhaps, clubs would rather invest that money into bringing younger players in or bringing in reinforcements in positions where they actually need those reinforcements."

Lionel Messi equalled Brazil legend Pele's record of 643 goals for a single club after scoring for Barcelona against Valencia.

The Argentine, 33, scored a diving header just before half-time immediately after his penalty was saved by Valencia keeper Jaume Domenech.

Messi scored his first goal for Barca in 2005 against Albacete.

Lionel Messi scored his 644th goal for Barcelona during his side's victory over Real Valladolid to break Pele's record of the most goals for one club.

Argentina forward Messi, 33, scored Barca's third when he collected Pedri's backheel, took a touch then slotted the ball past goalkeeper Jordi Masip.

Messi created the first goal when his cross was headed in by Clement Lenglet and started the move for the second, finished off by Martin Braithwaite.

Messi also hit the post in injury time.

Relive Barcelona's win over Real Valladolid as it happened
Brazil great Pele scored 643 goals in 19 seasons for Santos in his homeland between 1956 and 1974.

Messi, who scored his first goal for Barca in 2005 and has gone on to win 10 La Liga titles and four Champions Leagues, is out of contract at the end of the season and able to talk to other clubs from January.

In August, he said he wanted to exercise a clause in his deal which he said allowed him to leave on a free transfer, but Barcelona refused, saying his 700m euro (£624m) release clause had to be met.

Earlier this week, Messi said the incident caused him to have "a very bad time in the summer", although he was in superb form against Valladolid on Tuesday, inspiring a win that took Barcelona back up to fifth, eight points behind leaders Atletico Madrid.

Barca could have scored more goals but Masip made a number of fine saves and substitute Philippe Coutinho also hit the woodwork late on.

Marc-Andre Ter Stegen made two one-handed saves to deny Fabian Orellana and Kike Perez, preserving Barcelona's clean sheet.

Earlier on Tuesday, Atletico beat third-placed Real Sociedad 2-0 thanks to goals from Mario Hermoso and Marcos Llorente to go three points clear of Real Madrid, who play Granada at home on Wednesday (18:45 GMT).

Lionel Messi: Barcelona striker wants to play in US

Barcelona captain Lionel Messi says he hopes to one day play in the United States but is unsure of his future when his contract runs out in June.

The Argentina forward, 33, can begin negotiations with overseas clubs in January.

Speculation over his future has been intense since he handed in a transfer request in August.

"I don't know what I'm going to do yet," Messi told Spanish television channel La Sexta.

"I'm going to wait until the season ends. I would like to play in the United States and experience life and the league there, but ultimately come back to Barcelona in some capacity.

"Right now the most important thing is to focus on the team and finish the season well, to focus on trying to win trophies and not get distracted by other things."

Barcelona, who did not win a trophy last season, are fifth in La Liga after their worst start to a league campaign in 33 years.

Since joining at the age of 13, Messi has become the club's record goalscorer, won 10 La Liga tiles, the Champions League four times and the Ballon d'Or - awarded to the world's best player - six times.

His controversial summer request to leave Barcelona followed clashes with club president Josep Maria Bartomeu, who resigned in October.

Messi described Bartomeu's reign "a disaster".

"It's a difficult moment for the club, for everyone, but those inside the club know that it's in a really bad situation, things are very bad and it's going to be difficult to return the club to where it used to be," he added.

Barcelona have denied leaking details of Lionel Messi's contract - which is reportedly worth up to €555m (£492m) over four seasons - and have threatened to sue the newspaper responsible for its publication.

Lionel Messi scored his 650th goal for Barcelona with a wonderful free-kick as they beat Athletic Bilbao to move up to second in La Liga.

Athletic had a five-man wall, a player lying behind the wall and another on the line but Messi still managed to curl the ball into the top corner - his 49th free-kick goal for the club.

Athletic were level when Jordi Alba turned a cross into his own net.

But Antoine Griezmann slammed in the winner from Oscar Mingueza's pass.

Barcelona move above Real Madrid on goal difference, but the rivals both sit 10 points behind Atletico Madrid - who have a game in hand on both sides and who defeated Cadiz earlier in the day.

Ronald Koeman's side seem to be over their dreadful start to the season with eight wins and two draws in their past 10 La Liga games.

Barcelona's day ended better than it started, with the club denying leaking details of Messi's contract to El Mundo.

The club plan legal action after the Spanish newspaper published details of his £492m contract.

That is amongst the reasons as to why when City offered 90m plus B Silva (ultimate utility man in a 4-3-3),G Jesus (perfect bench no9) and Eric Garcia (CB star of the future)-I wpild have snapped their hands off!

Teams that do no regenerate fade. If Messi stayed,so to shoulf have Suarez but I can i understand that was Grizzy to step up.

Fortunately, more by luck, a strong core of 17-24 is forming with the odd potential superstar......

In defence
Dest
Garcia
Araujo

In midfield
Pedri-new Iniesta
Moriba- so excited at his potential as the stereotypical no8 and box to box player
De Jong
Puig

In attack
Fati- T Henry like potential
Trincao

Need to add:

Solid LB in Gaya.
Phase out pique, busi, Countinho and even pjanic (poor buy) as well as fringe players like emerson, toriba and lenglet or umtiti.
World class DM with right age profile, someone like Camavinga.
Make good use of Bosmans: Garcia, Wijnaldum and Depay.
Depending on Messi, if he stays, no superstar needed upfront as backing grizzy- need one following summer,if messi leaves, need someone AMR unless Dembele can stay fit and then a solid bench player ia needed unless Konrad is promoted.

Essence of barca is pushing yputh to fill gaps- backups need to be solid or filled with potential

Backups:

Inaki
Sergi
Mingueza
Alejandro
Umtiti
Puig
Wijnaldum
Moriba
Trincao
Depay
Konrad/dembele.

That is a solid reserve 11 and akin to the days of Seydou Keita off the bench, adriano as a utility man etc.

Ronald Koeman has called on Barcelona to sack any employee that may have been responsible for leaking details of Lionel Messi's contract to the press.

MADRID:Lionel Messi's 45th Clasico on Saturday could also be his last as Barcelona look to rubberstamp their progress under Ronald Koeman by beating Real Madrid and claiming top spot in La Liga.

The reward for the winners at Valdebebas will be knocking Atletico Madrid out of first place for the first time since December, before they mounted a run that saw them go 10 points clear with a game in hand at the start of February.

But Atletico's recent struggles, combined with a surge in momentum for Madrid and Barca, has seen that advantage evaporate, the question now whether Diego Simeone's team can recover and regroup to even stay in the race through the final stretch.

Who Atletico have to hold off or, more likely, catch in the last nine games could depend on this weekend's result at the Alfredo di Stefano stadium, where both clubs will be hoping for the ultimate vindication of recent improvement.

Success for Barcelona would be another significant check-point too in what has been an uplifting few months, the start of a recovery that has run alongside the ongoing uncertainty of what Messi will decide this summer.

Messi's every goal and glance this season has been analysed for possible indications as to the 33-year-old's thinking but what is clear is how the atmosphere at Barca has changed since he asked to leave for free last August.

Joan Laporta's election as club president, replacing Josep Maria Bartomeu, has brought enthusiasm and, crucially, a sense of direction again, even if the financial problems from the last regime are still very much the problems of the new one.

Messi is not expected to consider offers to renew his contract until the end of the season but Laporta has been pulling hard on the heart-strings.

"Today was the 20th anniversary of a boy named Leo Messi who debuted in the youth teams of Barca," Laporta said in his victory speech last month.

"To see Leo come to vote, the best player in world soccer, with his son for me, is an example of what we've said, that Leo loves Barca and how we are all one big family."

More persuasive might be what Messi has seen and felt on the pitch, witnessing a team that was broken a year ago gradually piece itself back together under Ronald Koeman.

Koeman has trusted the club's youngsters and Messi has nurtured them. Pedri, Ronald Araujo, Sergino Dest, Oscar Mingueza and Ilaix Moriba have flourished.

Mingueza, Ilaix, Trincao and Dest have all scored their first La Liga goals, all of them assisted by Messi.

And Messi has thrived too, reclaiming his place at the top of the league's scoring charts with 23 goals so far, and 19 goals in 20 games since the turn of the year.

It may not be enough, given Barcelona were also convincingly beaten by Paris Saint-Germain in the last 16 of the Champions League, the competition Messi centres round more than anything else.

Beating Athletic Bilbao in the final of the Copa del Rey or even Real Madrid and Atletico to the title in La Liga could still see Messi bid farewell.

But if this is to be his last Clasico, 16 years after his first, 44 games that have included 26 goals and two hat-tricks, Messi might see it now as an extra season well spent, the sense of deflation and bitterness gone, and his own place in the revival secure.

"There is only one person who can decide his future and it is him," Koeman said in February. "I would like him to stay for many more years and I just try to make sure he is happy, like he is at the moment."

Whatever the result, Atletico will have the chance to go back to the top of the table on Sunday when they play Real Betis.

But they will have to do it without their two star players, Luis Suarez and Marcos Llorente, who are both suspended. Sevilla in fourth, play away at Celta Vigo on Monday.

These guys are so badly in debt (upwards of 1 billion euros), as their clinging to the ESL shows, that it's becoming ridiculous to keep Messi at this point. How long can they continue paying Messi millions every week, even if he carries their whole side?

Cut your losses, try to reinvest the money with any degree of competence and let him go.

He brings in more money than what we pay him.

Also our turnover is a billion per year and the net debt is 500M.

Messi is my all time favourite player but he has to leave Barcelona. They need to invest and build a team for the future and they can’t do that as long as Leo is there. But having said that, it will be extremely weird to see Leo in another team’s shirt.

Barcelona have not begun contract renewal negotiations with Lionel Messi and Paris St-Germain are "looking closely" at the situation, says Spanish football expert Guillem Balague.

The Argentine forward, 33, is out of contract this summer and has yet to agree an extension.

A number of players could leave the La Liga club in the coming months.

"Messi will monitor the next two weeks when big club decisions will be made," Balague said.

Messi sent a fax to Barca in August 2020 saying he wanted to exercise a clause in his contract which he said allowed him to leave for free.

But the club said his 700m euro (£624m) release clause would have to be met.

He ultimately stayed with the La Liga giants, saying it would be "impossible" for any team to pay the fee.

Messi said at the time that the fact he did not tell Barca he wanted to leave before 10 June was crucial, and had he done so his release clause would not have had to be met.

Manager Ronald Koeman said he hoped Messi had not played his last game for Barca at the Nou Camp following their 2-1 home defeat by Celta Vigo on Sunday, but the striker has been granted an early holiday and will miss the final game of the season against Eibar.

The loss ended their title hopes and means they will finish outside the top two for the first time since 2007-08.

"He will have to decide if he wants to be in the club for a couple more seasons as a rebuild is taking place or if he wants to help PSG to win Champions League titles," Balague wrote on Twitter.

"Nobody can guess what he will decide at this point."

Barcelona generated more money than any other club in Europe during the 2019-20 season, but still had the second-largest revenue fall in absolute terms.

The club have amassed a huge amount of debt because of the coronavirus pandemic and heavy spending on player transfers.

Balague believes that "15 to 17" players could leave the club this season, including Spanish centre-back Gerard Pique and compatriot Jordi Alba.

"Centre-backs is one of the priorities. The club wants to save Pique's wages and will bring Eric Garcia," Balague said.

"[They are] also interested in Lisandro Martinez [Ajax], who can play full-back and centre-mid."

Striker Sergio Aguero, who will leave Premier League champions Manchester City at the end of the season, is one of Barcelona's targets.

Barca will also discuss potential swap deals with Inter Milan and Juventus, with Juve's Dutch centre-back Matthijs de Ligt high on the list.

BBC

And it looks like he could be playing alongside Sergio Aguero if the rumours are to be believed.

Add to that Antoine Griezmann and there should be plenty of goals for Barca next season.

Barcelona offer Lionel Messi new deal

Lionel Messi has a contract renewal proposal on the table from Barcelona, according to TV3 via Marca. The deal is reportedly a 10-year contract offer for the Argentine.

Messi is currently in Argentina training with the Albiceleste to play two qualifiers for the World Cup. After that, he has the Copa America ahead of him. Messi will not give a final answer on his future until he knows more details regarding the 2021/22 season at the club.

The club captain has always said that he wants an attractive sporting project and that Barcelona can really compete for all the titles in the short term. If that is the case, the economic aspect would not affect his future. TV3 reports that the number 10 has been sympathetic to the lack of big stars arriving this summer, owing to the economic crisis at Camp Nou. The club is optimistic about his future.

The initial idea was to wait for the results of the audit that Joan Laporta and his board have commissioned to find out the economic reality of the club before presenting Messi with a proposal but, as the results will not be available for two or three weeks, Barça did not want to wait any longer.

On Friday, Laporta will appear at a press conference and is expected to give details about Messi’s future.

Barcelona: Lionel Messi contract 'not done yet' says president Joan Laporta

Barcelona president Joan Laporta says a new deal for Lionel Messi is "not done yet" but that "things are going well".

The Argentine striker, 33, is out of contract in June.

"We are going to give him a proposal that is within our means and we hope that it will be accepted by the player," Laporta said.

Laporta also said Barcelona will not apologise for their role in the failed European Super League and will appeal against any punishment from Uefa.

Messi sent a fax to Barca in August 2020 saying he wanted to leave the club.

Barcelona insisted his 700m euro (£624m) release clause would have to be met - resulting in Messi staying at the club he has played for since 2000.

Spanish football expert Guillem Balague has suggested that Paris St-Germain are "looking closely" at Messi's contract situation but Laporta says his executives are "working hard to give him a good proposal".

"Things are going well with Messi but it's not done yet," added Laporta. "Our relationship is very good, Messi loves Barca - we want him to continue.

"He deserves more and could get a better contract somewhere else but I'm convinced he appreciates the efforts we are making."

Messi missed the final game of the season against Eibar after being granted an early holiday to rest before the Copa America.

According to Pep Guardiola, Manchester City's Sergio Aguero is close to signing a deal with Barca and could play alongside fellow Argentine Messi.

Barcelona finished third in La Liga for the first time since 2007-08, five points off Real Madrid in second, despite Messi being La Liga's top goalscorer for the season.

Laporta would not confirm if manager Ronald Koeman would continue at the club, saying: "We are having a period of reflection. He deserves respect. We have a project that is interesting to a lot of people."

Lionel Messi: Argentina forward in advanced talks over new Barcelona contract but not yet finally agreed

Lionel Messi is in advanced talks with Barcelona about a new contract - but there are still important details yet to be agreed.

The Argentina forward and Barca captain remains in negotiations about several key aspects of new terms - likely to be two years in length - with just six days left until his current deal expires.

It is Messi's intention to continue at his boyhood club - and both parties are negotiating with the idea of reaching an agreement and announcing the continuation of their partnership as soon as its finalised.

Barca hope it will be before July 1 so Messi does not run out of contract at the Nou Camp, and are said to be trying to accelerate the process as much as possible.

But, contrary to reports of an imminent signing and announcement, those formalities are on hold, Sky Sports News has been told, with a final agreement still to be reached.

Messi is also more than 8,000 kilometres away from Catalonia, playing with the Argentina national team at the Copa America, and his father and agent Jorge Messi left Barcelona this week, making the exact timing of his potential signing still uncertain.

Nevertheless, developments mark a considerable turnaround since almost a year ago when Messi handed in a transfer request, believing he had an agreement that allowed him to leave for free.

Then Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu insisted they would hold him to a €700m release clause, however.

Bartomeu has since resigned and Messi wanted to listen to the plans of his successor Joan Laporta - voted in in March - before deciding his future.

Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain have been the frontrunning clubs interested in signing him. Messi also wants to one day play in MLS.

Lionel Messi contract: Barcelona 'raise urgency' to complete deal

Messi is currently captaining Argentina in the Copa America
Barcelona are pushing for Lionel Messi to sign a new contract before his current deal runs out on 1 July.

Contrary to reports, not everything has been agreed, but in the past 24 hours the club has raised the level of urgency shown in previous weeks, with a desire to announce the agreement before the start of next month.

Messi's contract renewal is new president Joan Laporta's main priority and he is currently negotiating it directly with Messi's father and representative, Jorge Messi.

To be able to keep the Argentine, the club will have to reduce their wage bill by around 200m euros (£172m) and to meet La Liga's Financial Fair Play requirements.

Laporta is happy to offer the 34-year-old a new two-year deal.

Barcelona think Messi would like to go to Major League Soccer in the USA after the Qatar World Cup in 2022, although they would love to see him return to the club after that in any role or capacity of his choosing.

There had been rumours coming out of the club that everything had been agreed and could all be announced on the 24 June to coincide with the player's 34th birthday.

However, it is not just the signature that is missing but also agreement on all the points of a very complicated contract.

The club started negotiations in April and since then they have met or spoken to Messi's representatives at least 10 times, although they have urgently accelerated the conversation in recent hours.

Messi knows of the interest from other clubs, such as Manchester City and Paris St-Germain, but up to now has not negotiated anything with them, waiting first to hear what Barcelona were offering before finalising the details of a deal that will keep him at the Nou Camp.

At the moment, there is no decision on how any possible agreement will be announced, but nobody expects any other resolution than Messi staying at the club.

Despite the physical limitations that will come with age, he would still very much like his next move after Barcelona to be to a league where he can be a relevant presence.

For years now, he and former Barca team-mate Cesc Fabregas, currently at Monaco, have dreamt of playing together again in the same team and city, something the MLS will certainly offer him in two years' time.

https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/57620897

Manchester City, Paris St-Germain - this is not a drill. One of the world's greatest players is now officially a free agent.

Yes, 12 months on from his aborted attempted to leave Barcelona, Lionel Messi is now out of contract.

The Argentine superstar's deal expired at midnight and despite months of rumour and conjecture, he has failed to commit to an extension.

Talks over a new contract are believed to be ongoing, meaning Messi may well decide to stay at the Nou Camp.

But, for now, he is available for absolutely nothing.

Where will Messi play next season?
Spanish football writer Guillem Balague said earlier this week that Barcelona had "raised the level of urgency" in contract talks, with the hopes of making an announcement of a new two-year deal before the start of July.

"Messi's contract renewal is new president Joan Laporta's main priority and he is currently negotiating it directly with Messi's father and representative, Jorge Messi," he said.

"To be able to keep the Argentine, the club will have to reduce their wage bill by around 200m euros (£172m) to meet La Liga's Financial Fair Play requirements.

"Messi knows of the interest from other clubs, but up to now has not negotiated anything with them, waiting first to hear what Barcelona were offering."

The 34-year-old has been linked with moves to Paris St-Germain and Manchester City, where he would be reunited with his former boss at Barcelona Pep Guardiola, as well as America's Major League Soccer.

He is currently in Brazil playing for Argentina at the Copa America and became their most-capped player when he made his 148th international appearance against Bolivia on Tuesday, scoring twice and setting up another in a 4-1 win.

Lionel Messi's transfer timeline

25 August 2020 - Messi sends a fax to the club saying he wishes to exercise a clause in his contract, allowing him to leave for free with immediate effect.

4 September 2020 - Messi says he is staying at Barcelona because it is "impossible" for any team to pay his 700m euro (£624m) release clause, which the club insist would have to be met.

27 October 2020 - Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu, who had fallen out with Messi over his failed transfer request, resigns.

28 December 2020 - Messi says he hopes to one day play in the United States, but is unsure of his future when his contract runs out.

31 January 2021 - Barcelona say they will take "appropriate legal action" against Spanish newspaper El Mundo after it published details of Messi's contract, worth £492m over four years.

16 May 2021 - Manager Ronald Koeman says he hopes Messi has not played his final home game for the club after a 2-1 defeat by Celta Vigo ended their title hopes and meant they finished outside the top two for the first time since 2007-08.

22 May 2021 - Paris St-Germain are believed to be "looking closely" at Messi's contract situation.

28 May 2021 - Barcelona president Joan Laporta says a new contract for Lionel Messi is "not done yet" but that "things are going well".

1 July 2021 - Messi's Barcelona contract expires and he becomes a free agent.

https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/57666280

Lionel Messi has agreed to stay at Barcelona on a deal until 2026 that includes reducing his wages to half of his previous salary.

The announcement is dependent on player departures that will allow Barca to fund the Argentina captain's wages.

Messi, 34, was a free agent after his contract - that reportedly paid him £123m a season - expired on 30 June.

He is on holiday after winning the Copa America and the finer details of the contract are yet to be finalised.

There will be a break clause in the contract, allowing Messi to leave the club after two years.

The announcement could yet be a fortnight away for a combination of reasons, including La Liga insisting the club offload some wages before new players are registered and the player himself being on holiday.

Re-signing Messi was the principal summer target of new chairman Joan Laporta.

Barca are also looking at a swap deal involving forward Antoine Griezmann and Atletico Madrid midfielder Saul Niguez, with the idea of reducing the wage bill.

After the Copa America, Messi feels very strong and has started imagining staying at the club even longer than previously thought - hence him accepting a five-year deal.

After two he can break the deal, but if he feels as motivated and fit as now the move to, the MLS can wait

The agreement will not be announced immediately and may still be a couple of weeks away, as lawyers have to go through it, and La Liga has said the club must release wages before he and the new players can be registered

Fringe players such as Junior Firpo, Jean-Clair Todibo and Carles Alena have already been sold to free up budget but other big-name departures will also need to take place.

Messi had been linked with moves to Paris St-Germain and Manchester City, where he would be reunited with his former boss at Barcelona Pep Guardiola, as well as America's Major League Soccer, which he has previously considered experiencing.

Messi is Barcelona's record scorer with 672 goals and has won 10 La Liga titles, four Champions Leagues, seven Copa del Reys as well as claiming the Ballon d'Or on a record six occasions.

I wanted Messi to leave Barcelona, but I am glad he has agreed to stay on. Messi was made for Barcelona. I just hope that he can win another Champions League, even though that sounds very unlikely for Barcelona in the near future.

Lionel Messi is expected to sign his new Barcelona contract later this week and could mark his new era at the club at the Joan Gamper Trophy match on Sunday.

Messi is set to return from his post-Copa America holiday but it is not clear whether he will be ready to play in the pre-season game against Juventus, having yet to train and still not technically employed by the club.

However, the intention is for him to be present at the game at the Johan Cruyff Stadium at Barca's training ground, where he could also give the traditional pre-season speech as captain.

Even though I knew this dreaded day was always going to come one day, I kinda feel happy because Barca had become a caricature of themselves in the past few years and had moven away from their philosophy that made them so special. 2009-2011/12 period was when I watched the best football I had ever watched in my life. The last Barca side that I could connect with was under the late Tito but even then the decline had sorta started. It would've been sad watching Messi spend the last few years of his career playing for a disjointed team that is nothing like the one he played in the early part of his career.

So with Xavi, Puyol, Iniesta and Messi all having left, the likes of Villa, Valdes, Pedro, Alves, Abidal no more in the club, seems like Busquets and Pique are the only surviving members, also Alba if you can add him too. Will always remember that special team.

https://www.theguardian.com/football/2021/aug/05/lionel-messi-leaving-barcelona-after-obstacles-thwart-contract-renewal

Barcelona have announced that Lionel Messi is leaving the club after “financial and structural obstacles” made it impossible to renew his contract. The forward, who has spent his whole career there, had been expected to re-sign after his deal expired in June.

“Despite FC Barcelona and Lionel Messi having reached an agreement and the clear intention of both parties to sign a new contract today, this cannot happen because of financial and structural obstacles (Spanish Liga regulations),” the club said.

“As a result of this situation, Messi shall not be staying on at FC Barcelona. Both parties deeply regret that the wishes of the player and the club will ultimately not be fulfilled.

“FC Barcelona wholeheartedly expresses its gratitude to the player for his contribution to the aggrandisement of the club and wishes him all the very best for the future in his personal and professional life.”

Last month Messi agreed in principle to a five-year deal on reduced wages rather than a two-year extension initially discussed. It had been hoped the agreement would keep Barcelona within the boundaries of La Liga’s financial fair play regulations but that has proved impossible.

Barcelona needed to move players out to renew Messi’s deal and they have not been able to find the solution. The club, whose total debt is about €1,173m, are constrained by the league’s salary cap. Messi has agreed to a 50% pay cut, dropping from about €45m basic, after tax, to closer to €20m.

The question is where Messi, who was 34 in June, will play next season. He tried to leave Barcelona in August 2020 after a breakdown in his relationship with then president Josep Maria Bartomeu but was forced to stay. Now, when he was keen to continue for longer, it appears he is being made to go.

Messi has made 778 appearances for Barcelona, scoring a remarkable 672 goals which have helped to claim 10 league titles, four Champions Leagues and three Club World Cups among his haul of 35 trophies.

Liverpool need him to invigorate a MF that lacks creativity. Chelsea have the money and if City didn't sign Grealish, they would have been favourites out of the English teams

After Grealish's signing to City, PSG remain the only club who can afford Messi's wages at the moment when all clubs are going through massive economic losses due to the pandemic.

A very sad day for the world of football indeed, and I say this as a huge Real Madrid fan and someone who prefers Ronaldo over Messi.

Still, you just cant deny the man's greatness and his unmatched legacy at Barcelona during this beautiful journey, which I thought, will remain intact until Messi's retirement.

Unfortunately, Barca can only blame themselves right now. Their previous board, led by that imcompetent Bartomeu destroyed the club financially, and his flop signings such as Coutinho, Dembele and Griezmann ( almost 400 millions euros for these 3 players) are the reason why Messi is going out in this way.

Anyways, it was an honour to see the great Lionel Messi play in La Liga for 15 years, he broke Madrid's hearts several times, but he gave us so many magical moments that you just fell in love with football everytime you watched him play, even as a rival supporter, and his departure will definitely bring an official end to the greatest era of El Clasico in which the two GOATS went head to head so many times.

Gracias Leo.

Messi has to be realistic with his wage demands. Now that he is leaving Barca either it's PSG, perhaps Chelsea or retiring from the game it seems. As great a footballer as he is no club in the current financial circumstances would agree to pay such ridiculous wages for a 34 year coming towards the end of his career. As Chelsea have thus far been relatively quiet in the market he could end up there.

"Messi shall not be staying".

The statement, released by Barcelona just before 8pm Spanish time on Thursday, was unequivocal and shocked the world of football.

The 34-year-old Argentine, a free agent since 1 July, had been set to sign a new deal to extend his 21-year stay at the Nou Camp.

Barca said the contract was due to be signed on Thursday, but the Spanish league's "financial and structural obstacles" scuppered that.

So what now for the six-time Ballon d'Or winner? Is this really the end of Messi at Barca, or is there set to be one final twist?

Why did a new deal collapse?

Earlier this month, Spanish football writer Guillem Balague revealed Messi had agreed a deal until 2026 that included reducing his wages to half of his previous salary.

But Barca needed to sell players to fund the deal - reducing their wage bill by about 200m euros (£172m) to meet La Liga's Financial Fair Play (FFP) requirements - and are yet to achieve this. Antoine Griezmann, Ousmane Dembele and Philippe Coutinho - among others - remain on their books.

Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live's Football Daily, Balague said: "Barca had to find a creative way to pay Messi's wages, bonuses and signing on fee and every time I asked them 'how are you going to do that when you can't register new players you signed on a free?' the answer was 'just trust us'.

"The message from Messi's side was 'hang on, just wait'. Laporta [Barca president] was optimistic, Messi's side less optimistic. But not one single time was it said to be impossible.

"Now it has been confirmed is that there is no possible economical way for this to happen. But I don't think it is the end of the story."

The club's financial situation is "exceptionally critical", says Radio Catalunya's Ernest Macia.

He told BBC World Service: "Many people are still trying to imagine how life will be after Messi because nobody had imagined this three days ago.

"In fact, we heard some voices in the club, even president Joan Laporta, saying that Messi would stay. There was already a contract there to be signed, a contract was already written.

"In their statement it seems that Barcelona and Messi agree - they are on the same side. Instead it seems the financial situation of the club, regulations of La Liga... and the bottom line was not meeting the FFP regulations."

Is this a powerplay?

Spanish football writer Andy West

Stop writing the obituaries, shelve those plans for a grand farewell... as dramatic as it seems, Barca's announcement does not definitely mean Messi is leaving. Not yet, anyway.

In fact, rather than being a final and definitive statement it is actually a very risky tactical move in the club's powerplay with La Liga, whose salary cap regulations are preventing Messi and Barca from signing the new contract the club claim they have both agreed.

The backdrop is Barca's crippling financial situation and their connected ongoing desire to form a European Super League, which club president Joan Laporta has continued to pursue along with his Real Madrid counterpart Florentino Perez.

Crucially, La Liga has just announced a major new deal with investment fund CVC, which would immediately hand Barca about £200m - enough to re-sign Messi. To receive that, however, the club would have to sign a long-term commitment to La Liga, renouncing the idea of a Super League.

And minutes after Barca's statement, Real Madrid released their own, saying the CVC deal was done "without the involvement or knowledge" of the club and saying they cannot support the venture.

Laporta is saying to La Liga president Javier Tebas: 'Well, let's see what your new investment fund partner makes of a league without Messi. Your move.'

What that move will be... who knows? But this multi-billion-dollar game of chess is not over. Laporta has called 'check'. But it's not necessarily 'checkmate'.

Where could Messi end up?

It was just a year ago that Messi said he wanted to exercise a clause in his contract to leave on a free transfer, but Barca said a 700m euros (£624m) fee had to be paid.

Now there are no such restrictions.

He has long been linked with a reunion with former Barca boss Pep Guardiola at Manchester City.

But with City having signed Jack Grealish for a British record £100m, and being linked with a big-money move for Tottenham striker Harry Kane, Balague does not think the Premier League champions "have the financial viability to get Messi".

He told BBC Radio 5 Live: "It's not like getting someone who will earn, say, 50m euros. Whatever it is, you have to double it. But you also have to pay a signing-on fee, that could be 50-60-70m. It's a signing from another club almost.

"So from that point of view I don't think City have got the finances now, and we all suspect it has to be Paris St-Germain next."

French football expert Julien Laurens added: "I still think Barca are bluffing. From a PSG point of view and what they have said over the last year is that if Messi becomes available, and is interested, then they believe they have got enough in bank and resources to make that deal happen.

"The outcome may be he still stays, but they will repeat to Messi family that they hope for something if he wanted to join PSG."

100%.

This is down to the mismanagement over the last 4 years. Too many wasteful transfers, overpaid for players that they have failed to sell.

Messi wanted to leave last summer but it was more of an angry reaction to the Bayern humiliation, but he is past that tantrum now and now his heart was set on retiring at Barcelona.

Messi leaving Barcelona was unthinkable, and the notion that he will be forced to leave because of the incompetence of the board was even more unthinkable.

El Classico without Messi, Ronaldo and Ramos. Truly an end of an era. It would be a long time before this rivalry can capture the excitement and aura of the 2010s. What a ride it was.

Their is a small chance to see Messi and Ronaldo on the same team now. If PSG sells Mbappe they might be able to afford both of them.

Messi at PSG, alongside Neymar and Mbappe would be great!

Messi isn't quite the player he was 5 years ago but he can add experience to the attack, a cool head in tight situations and PSG may finally win that CL!

Lionel Messi is said to be "shocked" and "surprised" at the dramatic revelation on Thursday that Barcelona could not re-sign him.

The Argentine is at his home in Barcelona, taking time with his father and agent Jorge to come to terms with what has happened and analyse his options for the future.

On Thursday night, a day after Messi returned to Catalonia following his post-Copa America holiday, Barca announced that Messi is to leave the Nou Camp and conclude his 21-year association with the La Liga giants.

Messi travelled to Barca on Thursday expecting to agree on the details of the announcement of his new five-year deal and discuss preparations for the Joan Gamper trophy game on Sunday.

Messi thought everything was agreed and ready to go forward - but instead he was told it was not possible to register him in line with La Liga financial rules. President Joan Laporta, speaking in a press conference on Friday morning, laid out the deep financial mess that has meant they cannot afford a new contract for the 34-year-old.

Messi wanted to stay at Barcelona and has not considered any other clubs this summer. He has had no plan B.

But Messi and his father are now open again to joining another club and they will begin listening to offers in the coming days.

This is a clear indication that there appears to be no way back for him at Barcelona.

Messi became a free agent on July 1 after his previous deal expired on June 30 and Paris Saint-Germain are currently leading the race for the forward's signature.

PSG are making progress in talks to sign Messi, believe they have a good chance of completing the deal and can afford to sign him without breaking any financial fair play rules.

They have already signed free agents Gianluigi Donnarumma, Sergio Ramos and Georginio Wijnaldum this summer.

A move to PSG would see a reunion with his former team-mate Neymar, the prospect of challenging for trophies, and being part of a new 'project' at the Parc des Princes under manager Mauricio Pochettino.

Messi has won the Ballon d'Or six times and is Barcelona's record goalscorer with 672 goals in 778 appearances.

The Argentina international has won 35 major titles at club level since making his debut in 2003 - 10 La Liga titles, four Champions League crowns, seven Copa del Rey trophies, three Club World Cups, three European Super Cups and eight Spanish Super Cups.

Laporta: Messi wanted to stay | La Liga rules prevented new deal

Barcelona president Laporta says La Liga's Financial Fair Play regulations prevented the club from offering Messi a new contract, despite the fact that the forward wanted to stay at the Nou Camp.

Messi had agreed terms over a five-year contract extension with a wage reduction of 50 per cent, but the club said the two parties failed to reach an agreement because of "financial and structural obstacles" which prevented the offer from being fulfilled.

Laporta told a press conference on Friday: "The inheritance we have received is awful. The salary mess is 110 per cent of total income of the club. No margin in terms of salary.

"Rules and regulations of La Liga is regulated by financial fair play. We knew we didn't have any margin when we came in.

"When we got here, the numbers presented after the first conclusions of the audit, those numbers are a lot worse than those exposed initially and those we were working with.

"That means that losses are bigger than what we expected, and what we are spending is more than expected. The current contracts means we have a salary mess of great magnitude. That is why we could not fit in with the first contract agreed with Leo Messi."

Barcelona joined rivals Real Madrid on Thursday in denouncing a proposed multi-billion-dollar investment and revenue-sharing deal between La Liga and private equity firm CVC.

The Spanish football league on Wednesday announced that CVC would inject 2.7 billion euros (£2.3 billion) into La Liga in exchange for 10 per cent of its revenue and a 10 per cent stake in most of its business, with 90 per cent of the injection going to clubs.

However, Laporta said the club could not agree to this deal because of the impact it could have on Barca for the next 50 years.

"Barca had to agree to an operation that would affect the club for the next 50 years in terms of TV rights. I cannot make a decision that will affect the club for the next 50 years," he said.

"The club is over 100 years old and above everyone - coaches, players, presidents - including the best player in the world."

Paris Saint-Germain are already making progress in talks to sign Lionel Messi after Barcelona were unable to offer the forward a new contract at the Nou Camp.

The six-time Ballon d'Or winner has officially been a free agent since July 1 after he failed to agree terms over a renewal before his previous Barcelona contract expired on June 30.

However, the 34-year-old had been expected to sign a new five-year contract with the Catalan club, which would have seen his salary reduced by 50 per cent

City, PSG and possibly Inter are the only possible options for Messi I reckon. Can’t see him go to any other club at the moment.

If Messi ends up in PSG it'll be fun to watch Ramos and Messi together 😜

He’s off to PSG, but it would have been amazing to see him destroy PL at 33-34 and prove himself to be head and shoulders above everyone, shutting up all the ignorant idiots who think he can’t cut it in England.
