Lionel Messi scored his 800th top-level goal as Argentina beat Panama 2-0 in their first match since winning the World Cup.

The 35-year-old Paris St-Germain forward becomes the second player to reach the milestone after Cristiano Ronaldo.

Messi's tally includes 672 goals over 17 seasons for Barcelona and 29 for PSG.

He also has 99 international goals, with two coming in the World Cup final.

The Argentina captain scored an 89th-minute free-kick at the Monumental de Nunez Stadium in Buenos Aires to add to Thiago Almada's opener 11 minutes earlier.

Messi will have the opportunity to score his 100th international goal when Argentina play Curacao on Tuesday.

It is yet another milestone in an extraordinary career during which he has won almost every major trophy, including four Champions Leagues, 10 La Liga titles, the Copa America and, finally in December, the World Cup.

Established as one of the greatest players of all time, Messi has won the Ballon d'Or - awarded to the best player of the year in European football - a record seven times, twice more than Ronaldo.

The only major competition Messi has played in but failed to win so far is the French Cup.

Messi's haul of 35 trophies with Barcelona, whom he joined at the age of 13, makes him the most decorated player in the Spanish club's history and he unsurprisingly holds Barca's all-time scoring and appearance (778) records.

He has also scored more goals (474) and provided more assists (192) than any player to have featured in La Liga and has the record for the most goals in a single season in the Spanish top flight - 50 in 37 games during 2011-12.

He has the most La Liga hat-tricks (36) and shares the record for the most trebles in a single season with Ronaldo, who also has eight.

While the Portugal forward remains the Champions League's all-time top scorer with 140 goals, Messi - who has 129 - was the first player to register five goals in a match in the competition and his sequence of scoring in 18 consecutive years is also unmatched in the European club game's elite tournament.

Lionel Messi Passes 100-Goal Mark For Argentina As He Adds Curacao To List Of Nations He Has Scored Against

Lionel Messi has become the third player to score at least 100 goals in men's international soccer.

The 35-year-old joined Cristiano Ronaldo and Iran legend Ali Daei in the 100 Club by scoring against Curacao in a friendly on Tuesday.

Messi's 100th international goal arrived 20 minutes into the game at the Estadio Unico Madre de Ciudades in Santiago del Estero.

It was scored with his weaker right foot after he jinked past a Curacao defender inside the penalty area.

Messi then scored his 101st international goal 34 minutes into Tuesday's game before completing his hat-trick moments later as Argentina ran riot against the side ranked 86th in the world by FIFA.

Argentina went on to win Tuesday's game 7-0, with Nicolas Gonzalez, Enzo Fernandez, Angel Di Maria and Gonzalo Montiel joining Messi on the scoresheet.

Barcelona are in contact with Lionel Messi about returning to the club, says vice-president Rafael Yuste.

The 35-year-old Argentina forward is Barcelona's all-time top scorer with 672 goals in 778 games and left the Nou Camp for financial reasons in 2021.

His two-year contract with Paris St-Germain expires this summer and his preference is thought to be staying with the French club.

"Leo and his family know the affection I have for them," Yuste said.

Messi agreed a new deal with Barcelona on reduced wages two years ago, but it was dependent on the club selling players following new financial rules.

That did not happen in time and ended his storied spell at the club which yielded four Champions Leagues and 10 La Liga titles - plus six Ballons d'Or.

"I participated in the negotiations which unfortunately did not lead to a certain result," said Yuste.

"I've always had this thorn in my side that Leo couldn't continue at our club.

"Messi knows how much we appreciate him. I would love for him to come back. We're in contact, of course, with them."

Messi, who won the World Cup with Argentina in December, has scored 29 goals in 66 games for PSG.

He recently claimed his 100th international goal and 800th career strike.

Lionel Messi is increasingly likely to leave Paris Saint-Germain when his contract runs out this summer.

Messi's representatives have been in talks about a contract renewal with PSG and everything was looking positive during the World Cup in Qatar.

However, the dynamic has now changed and his departure from Paris this summer would suit all parties.

Messi is yet to commit his future to the Parisian giants, with his contract up at the end of the season.

The seven-time Ballon d’Or previously signed a deal staggering £25million-a-year deal last May, as he became a tourist ambassador for the Arabian nation.

According to L’Equipe, PSG announced players would report to training on Monday following the defeat, but have the day off on Tuesday.

The report adds the trip was planned before Sunday’s defeat and had previously been postponed on two occasions.

All players were expected at the clubs Camp des Loges training base on Monday, though Messi was not present.

Instead, he was in the Saudi capital Riyadh as part of his deal with the Saudi tourist office.

According to RMC Sport, PSG have suspended Messi for two weeks with immediate effect after he missed training on Monday.

It means Messi will not play or train with the club for two weeks, while he has also had his pay suspended.

After penning a contract worth £52million-a-year, it will mean that the former Barcelona star will miss out on £2m in wages.

PSG chiefs were left dumbfounded when Messi failed to turn up to training on Monday, as were his teammates.

The Argentine has a contractual obligation to travel to Saudi Arabia after becoming their tourism ambassador.

In total, Messi will miss two matches for PSG as they look to win Ligue 1.

Messi is bigger than PSG. I hope he leaves in the summer. PSG are a joke of a football club.

Lionel Messi will leave Paris St-Germain this summer at the end of his current contract.

The Argentine World Cup winner had reached an 'agreement in principle' to extend his stay for another year but neither club nor player now want to sign the deal.

Messi is unconvinced the club can compete at the top of the European game, due to financial issues, while the French champions want to focus on developing young talent.

He signed a two-year deal in Paris in 2021 with an option to renew for another year but that will now not be activated.

It is understood his father Jorge Messi informed Paris St-Germain's football advisor Luis Campos a few weeks ago.

Barcelona 'in contact' with Messi
Why Messi's dream return to Barca looks unlikely
The player believes PSG's budget could be limited next season to comply with Financial Fair Play rules - putting the quality of their squad at risk.

His reluctance to commit to a new deal in recent months has frustrated PSG's Qatari owners, who believe Messi's lack of response was a clear message he didn't want to stay

The 35-year-old was suspended by PSG for two weeks on Tuesday after travelling to Saudi Arabia without the club's permission.

Barcelona and Messi would be keen on securing a dream return for the forward to the Nou Camp but, with the La Liga leaders facing severe financial difficulties, a move back 'home' looks increasingly unlikely.

He also has interest from Inter Miami in Major League Soccer and an eyewatering offer of about 400m euros (£354m) to play in Saudi Arabia for a year with Al-Hilal.

Messi though believes he can still compete at the top of European football for another season - eyeing the chance to win a fifth Champions League trophy - but, with a move to Barcelona looking impossible, his options are looking increasingly limited.

Messi has scored 31 goals and contributed 34 assists in 71 games in all competitions for PSG, and won the Ligue 1 title last season.

He is set to miss matches against Troyes and Ajaccio as PSG, five points clear with five games to go, look to clinch a ninth league title in 11 seasons.

Messi, Barcelona's all-time top scorer with 672 goals in 778 games, left the Nou Camp in 2021 because of financial issues at the club.

He is favourite to win an eighth Ballon d'Or in October, which is three more than any other player, after winning the World Cup with Argentina in December.

Lionel Messi: Paris St-Germain forward apologises for unauthorised trip to Saudi Arabia

Lionel Messi has apologised to his Paris St-Germain teammates and says he will wait for the club to decide what they want to do with him after making an unauthorised trip to Saudi Arabia.

The Argentina captain was suspended by the club for two weeks for the trip.

It followed PSG's home defeat by Lorient on Sunday - their third in six games - when Messi played 90 minutes.

"I am sorry for what I did and I wait to see what the club decides," Messi said in a video posted on Instagram.

"I honestly thought we were going to have the day off after the match as had happened in the previous weeks.

"I had organised this trip to Saudi Arabia having cancelled it previously. This time I couldn't cancel it."

Messi is set to leave PSG when his contract expires in the summer.

The 35-year-old, who has also been fined by the club, has a role as a tourism ambassador for Saudi Arabia.

PSG manager Christophe Galtier says he had "nothing to do with" Messi's suspension, while also condemning fan protests outside players' homes.

"Leo's suspension has added to poor performances, we can't hide behind that," Galtier, 56, said on Friday.

"The decision was nothing to do with me. I was informed of the decision. I can't say it has been a pleasant period."

PSG top Ligue 1 by five points with five games to play but are out of the Champions League and lost in the last 16 of the French Cup. There were fan protests following their defeat to Lorient.

Fans also gathered outside the home of the club's Brazilian forward Neymar on Wednesday, chanting for him to leave the club.

The 31-year-old is out for rest of the reason because of an ankle injury.

The actions of the supporters prompted the club to increase security at the homes of Messi, Neymar, Italy midfielder Marco Verratti and Galtier, as well as at the club's training ground.

"Regarding the protests in front of a player's home, we have to be careful with that. Private life must remain private," said Galtier.

"I can understand the anger, the disappointment of our fans. You may protest at the training ground or at the PSG office or after a match at the Parc des Princes but I cannot accept it at anyone's house.

"There is a lot of these things happening at the moment, and they can be uncontrollable and dangerous."

Lionel Messi: Barcelona is forward's 'home', says club president Joan Laporta

Barcelona president Joan Laporta says the club is Messi's "home" as they look to re-sign the forward this summer.

The Argentine's contract at Paris St-Germain expires in June, with reports linking him to Saudi Arabia.

But in an interview with Spanish broadcaster TV3, Laporta said Barcelona can compete with anyone for the 35-year-old's signature.

"History backs us, the feelings are too strong, we have 400 million fans around the world too," he said.

Messi left the Catalan giants two years ago after 21 years at the club but has struggled during his two seasons in France, with fans booing him after their 5-0 win over Ajaccio at the weekend.

Laporta said there had been an "affectionate conversation" between the two and that he congratulated Messi on winning the World Cup in Qatar last year.

"He is a Paris St-Germain player and we have to wait until the end of the season, until it is over, and then we can talk more calmly about this," Laporta added.

"With all due respect to Saudi Arabia, Barca is Barca, and it is home."

The comments come after Barcelona won their first La Liga title in four years with a 4-2 win over Espanyol on Sunday.

Laporta appeared to be more reserved than during a late night Twitch stream after the win, on which he is reported to have said the club would do "everything possible" to sign Messi.

Lionel Messi: Barcelona manager Xavi tells club president to bring Paris Saint-Germain forward back to the Nou Camp

Barcelona manager Xavi has called on the club hierarchy to bring Lionel Messi back to the Nou Camp this summer, but says the move depends on the Argentina forward.

Sky Sports News revealed earlier this month that Messi is set to leave current club Paris Saint-Germain at the end of his contract, with Barcelona president Joan Laporta admitting that the club are looking into bringing the him back.

Messi, who scored 672 goals in 778 appearances for Barca between 2003 and 2021, has spent the last two seasons at PSG after Barcelona let him move for a free due to being unable to renew his contract.

Asked about the impact Messi would have on this Barcelona team, who won the LaLiga title this season, Xavi told Barcelona-based newspaper SPORT: "I'm in no doubt that if Messi were to return, he would help us in what we are wanting to achieve with our football.

"I am in no doubt and I've told this to the president. He continues to be a determined footballer, he has the hunger still.

"He's still a winner, he's a leader and he's different. At Barcelona, we've not have the same level since what we reached as a pinnacle in 2010.

"Messi brings you the talent of being able to play the final pass, he opens doors, scores goals. In the final third he can provide the difference.

"There's no doubt that he would still help us a lot - but in the end it all depends on him.

"We're going to talk to him and his representatives. I think Leo has the upper hand, there is no doubt. Yes, it's true that we've already won in the post-Messi era and that has extraordinary merit, it's extraordinary, it's not valued anyway, but the fear that we had was when Leo leaves, what are we going to do?

"Well, Barca has survived, I think we have rebuilt the team and the group very well and this league title and this Super Cup have spectacular merit and without the best player in the history of football and this club has much merit.

"It's difficult to be in the skin of someone who has won it all. I'm not in his head, but I've been very clear about my relationship with him. We have the doors wide open. And if he wants to come, I'm in no doubt that it can happen and he would help us. But it's up to him. It's his personal choice."

Messi back to Barca will have the same effect what Ronaldo back to ManU so better not to destroy your legacy and look for something else, why not have a taste of PL football so Arsenal Chelsea Newcastle can be good options

Lionel Messi is expected to decide in the coming hours where he will be playing his football next season - the only thing that seems certain is that it will not be at Barcelona.

Messi would have liked nothing more than to return to the place that was his home since he left Argentina as a 12-year-old in pursuit of his footballing dream.

But his camp has told Barcelona the decision on his future is imminent and they cannot wait any longer for a proposal from them that has not arrived, despite promises the Catalan club would have something in place by now.

The 35-year-old World Cup winner wants to stay in Europe but, after it was decided he would leave Paris St-Germain this summer, the forthcoming offers from the continent have not been attractive enough.

In Saudi Arabia there are government officials already working on his arrival. They have been told Messi has accepted a very lucrative offer from Al-Hilal and are preparing for the move. This could simply be his camp preparing for his decision - or it is the most attractive proposition for the player.

American side Inter Miami are another option, although a reported loan deal between them and Barcelona - where he would end up temporarily at the Catalan club - is not on the cards.

The timing and announcement of his decision will be decided by his new club.

Once again the Barcelona media machine has been mobilised to persuade anyone and everyone that their failure to secure a deal is the fault of the player and La Liga.

A melange of misinformation, half-truths and outright lies emanating from a friendly press ignore the fact Barcelona have at no point put any proposal to the player and that they cannot offer any guarantee they will be able to do so before the September 1 deadline.

The Financial Fair Play limitations that will be in place for next season also make any ambitious plan to bring him back an impossibility.

But, rather than admit this, Barcelona prefer to give the impression they are making tireless efforts to bring him home - only for them to be pushed back either by Messi or the allegedly 'draconian' limitations put on them by the league's governing body.

It is simply not true.

Manager Xavi said yesterday that 99% of what was required for the player to return to the club was down to Messi himself. Perhaps that is what Xavi has been told, but it is all words and putting the emphasis on his decision is based on an intentionally wrong reading of the affair.

These are the moments when teams start to put their plans in place. And with plans for his return seemingly now dead in the water, it is damage limitation time for Barcelona as they set about trying to show they did everything possible to bring him home.

Messi's team made it clear he was prepared to play for whatever wage that would have helped Barcelona stay the right side of FFP regulations and he would even be prepared to play for free if asked - although that is neither acceptable to La Liga or even legal under Spanish law.

The French newspaper L'Equipe said there was the possibility of Messi being signed by Inter Miami and then going on loan to Barcelona. This is an idea that has come from the American club, but never had any chance of going past the talking stage.

How can Inter convince Messi to be signed by them and go on loan to Barcelona for few months? The player, for many the best ever, would feel like a commodity.

In any case, despite being discussed by the two clubs, at no point has any proposal along those lines been made to the player himself.

The accusation La Liga is to blame is risible. They are followed by nonsensical accusations La Liga also has in place anti-Barcelona regulations. It is the exact opposite.

La Liga rules are in place to protect clubs, Barcelona included, from owners and directors financially ruining them.

The temptation when directors get money is to invest it in players when the reality is they should be as much or more concentrated on paying debts and improving infrastructure.

Due to the usage of 'financial levers' that allowed Barcelona to invest in the club last season, but won't be able to be used again, they presented a liquidity plan recently to La Liga. This was in addition to the budget plans that all clubs have to provide, to prove to the league they are living within their means.

The reason they have to provide these plans is to reassure the league that any extra incoming money will not be spent in a way that could jeopardise the future of the club.

The temptation of spending on players, rather than on much-needed repairs or debt repayments, is akin to buying prohibitively expensive designer furniture to place in a living room, while there is a massive hole in the roof.

Clubs present budget plans which show their income minus all non-sporting financial commitments and any outstanding debts that need to be serviced.

What is left is the money available to pay players. It is up to Barcelona if they want to use all that money to pay for Messi, but they have never indicated they want to do that, instead suggesting they need to register Ronald Araujo or Gavi with their new contracts first.

The reality is the club still have massive debts to cover and their spending capacity will be very limited.

That information will arrive officially from La Liga to Barcelona in the next few days, but the club is very aware of those limits, which will not be announced to the public until after the markets have closed to not affect transfers.

Meanwhile, you hear false stories in the Catalan media about how La Liga and Barcelona are holding meetings to talk about Messi, and there is only a shortfall of around 40m euros (£34.6m) between what the club have presented and what La Liga wants to resolve their FFP situation. This, again, is untrue.

The most worrying aspect is that, with the distraction of Messi, people are not realising since the arrival of president Joan Laporta, the debt is neither being reduced at the rate it needs to be, nor being reduced in sufficient quantities to allow them to have a budget for the players that will allow them to be competitive in Europe.

Inter Miami have offered Lionel Messi 50m euros per year (£42.9m) to spend four seasons in the MLS after the Argentina forward, 35, leaves Paris St-Germain this summer. (Sport)

Argentina legend Lionel Messi will join American side Inter Miami after his exit from French champions Paris St-Germain.

The former Barcelona forward is set to reject a more lucrative offer from Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal.

The Miami deal includes collaboration from brands like Adidas and Apple.

Messi, 35, won the Ballon d'Or award for the world's best player seven times and is expected to win it later this year after World Cup success.

This is the first time Barcelona icon Messi has played outside Europe.

He wanted to remain in Europe for another season but, after no satisfactory offers were received, he had the straight choice between Inter Miami or Al-Hilal.

He was heavily tipped to be favouring a move to Saudi Arabia, where he would have joined Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema in the league in a deal that could not be matched financially.

But Messi was ultimately tempted to Major League Soccer (MLS) side Inter Miami for a variety of reasons including lifestyle, and a deal with big brands that extends beyond football.

He already owns a house in Miami, which he rents out.

He was keen on a return to Barcelona this summer but the Financial Fair Play (FFP) limitations that will be in place for next season in La Liga made any ambitious plan to bring him back an impossibility.

Paris St-Germain won Ligue 1 in both his seasons at the club but went out in the Champions League last 16, which means his time in France was not seen as a huge success.

He netted 32 goals in 75 games for the club - and ended this season with 16 goals and 16 assists in Ligue 1.

Messi's two-year contract comes to an end this summer and both parties agreed to go their separate ways, with the forward suspended for two weeks in May for an unauthorised trip to Saudi Arabia.

His legacy comes from his time at Barcelona and winning the World Cup with Argentina in December.

He left Barca in 2021, after 21 years with the club, because of the club's financial problems.

Messi is Barcelona's record scorer with 672 goals and won 10 La Liga titles, four Champions Leagues and seven Spanish Cups.

Lionel Messi scored his fastest career goal as Argentina comfortably beat Australia in a friendly in Beijing.

Captain Messi, 35, opened the scoring after one minute and 19 seconds, curling a finish into the top left corner from the edge of the box.

Substitute German Pezzella doubled the world champions' lead with a header in the 68th minute.

Australia's Mitch Duke had a first-half effort pushed onto the post by Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez.

But Argentina always looked comfortable in Messi's first match since agreeing to join American side Inter Miami.

Lionel Scaloni's side were playing their third fixture since lifting the World Cup in December, and their first outside of Argentina.

Messi back to Barca will have the same effect what Ronaldo back to ManU so better not to destroy your legacy and look for something else, why not have a taste of PL football so Arsenal Chelsea Newcastle can be good options

The difference between Messi and Ronaldo is that Ronaldo was genuinely finished when he returned to Man United while Messi is still among the top 5 players in the world.

He isn’t the player he once was but as the GOAT that he is, he is still unbelievable even though Father Time is catching up with him.

If there is a World Cup today he will dominate it once again. However, after so many years in the spotlight, he deserves a quiet life and he enters the last couple of years of his career.

He has completed football and has nothing to prove to anyone. He is mentally tired and if he turned down his own club Barcelona, there is no chance he would have accepted an offer from teams elsewhere in Europe.

The GOAT doesn’t need the PL but the PL needed the GOAT.

Can’t wait to watch him in Saudi league

Ronaldo went to Saudi because he was finished at the top level, but Messi still an unbelievable player who just won a World Cup and was the best player few months back.

However, he is mentally tired and has nothing to prove to anyone anymore. Now that he has completed football and settled the GOAT debate, he deserves a quiet and relaxed two-three years before he calls time on his career.

PSG had the greatest of all time for two years and all they did was criticize him and they never forgave him before beating France in the World Cup final. In hindsight, PSG was the wrong club for him. They never respected him even though he is bigger than their club.

The rekindling of Messi and Ronaldo rivalry in Saudi league would have been a lot of fun for the fans, but from Messi’s perspective it makes sense why he doesn’t want to rekindle it.

If Messi goes to Saudi, the media will hype up their rivalry again and they will be continuously compared for their performance in Saudi. Messi wants a quiet retirement and he has already killed the debate with Ronaldo and defeated him.

Ronaldo also deserves a quiet and peaceful retirement. The last thing he needs right now is for Messi to come to Saudi and make him look inferior like he has for over a decade in Spain and in international football.

Messi would outshine Ronaldo in Saudi today like he has everywhere else simply because he is a much better player, and we should not hope or expect these two to cross paths again. Messi will retire in MLS or maybe back home in Argentina while Ronaldo will call time on his career in a year or so and probably become a Saudi league ambassador etc.

Yes Inter Miami is probably better suited to him in that regard, I don’t think he’d cope with the intensity of the rivalry with Ronaldo again and he’d risk damaging his legacy if it didn’t turn out well, I think in the US, regardless of performance he will be well away from the spotlight and nobody pays much attention to it, when Beckham went there I don’t remember paying any attention to anything he did. Inferior is subjective as the two have competed with each other during their prime and had success, Messi ended his career on a high though and you could argue retiring after winning the WC would have been a better way to go out. Yeah it’s the French culture, they are generally really horrible people.

Lionel Messi says his relationship with Paris St-Germain fans "fractured" after a "significant" number of supporters started to treat him differently.

Messi, who won the World Cup with Argentina in December, left PSG at the end of last season after two years and has joined Inter Miami.

In the second half of last season, Messi was repeatedly booed and PSG had to increase security around his house.

"I think in the beginning it was something wonderful," said Messi.

Speaking to beIN Sports, the 36-year-old said: "But then some people started to treat me differently, a part of the Paris supporters. I think the vast majority still see me and treat me as they did at the beginning, but there was a fracture with a significant group of the Paris fans, which obviously wasn't my intention, far from it.

"It happened just as it had happened before with [Kylian] Mbappe, with Neymar. I know that's the way they behave.

"I'll take away with me the people who respected me, as I always respected everyone since I arrived and that's all."

Messi said he did not know if Argentina beating France in the World Cup final was a factor.

He was booed by some PSG fans after being suspended for an unauthorised trip to Saudi Arabia, and again during his final match for the Ligue 1 champions.

In a wide-ranging interview, Messi also said he found it "very difficult" to adapt to life in Paris on and off the pitch following his 2021 move from Barcelona, having missed pre-season and then later having a month out mid-season with Covid.

In contrast, he said he felt "very comfortable" at the start of his second season at Parc des Princes but the mid-season winter World Cup "affected the whole season for everyone".

'I've achieved everything'

In winning the World Cup - Argentina's first in 36 years - Messi added football's biggest prize to a list of trophies that includes a record seven Ballon d'Or titles - awarded to the best footballer each year - four Champions Leagues, one Copa America, 10 La Liga titles with Barcelona and two Ligue 1 crowns with PSG.

In May, he broke Cristiano Ronaldo's record for the most goals scored in Europe's top five leagues and, to date, has scored a combined 807 goals for club and country.

"I have nothing left to achieve, I've achieved everything," he said.

However, Messi said his individual achievements were secondary to those won with his teams, though he did concede they were "nice recognitions".

"I achieved the most important goal I had, which was to win the World Cup with my national team and it was something extraordinary, the way everything happened," he said.

"I never thought about individual awards and I never gave them more importance than the collective awards.

"To have achieved the objectives with the Argentina national team and to have achieved everything at an individual level, at a team level, for me it is to close an extraordinary career."

Lionel Messi: Argentina forward scores again to help Inter Miami reach Leagues Cup final

Lionel Messi shrugged off an injury scare to score his ninth goal in six games as Inter Miami beat Philadelphia Union to reach the Leagues Cup final.

The Argentine World Cup winner scored Miami's second goal in a 4-1 victory, a day after rolling his ankle in training.

Josef Martinez, Jordi Alba and David Ruiz scored for Miami, with Alejandro Bedoya on target for the hosts.

Miami will now play Nashville SC in Saturday's final (Sunday, 02:00 BST).

The result also means Miami qualify for the Concacaf Champions Cup regional tournament next season, which may open up a route into Fifa's expanded Club World Cup in 2025.

"Our goal was to qualify for international competition next season and we've done that," said Miami boss Gerardo Martino.
"Now we have to prepare to win this tournament, which has us feeling very motivated and confident."

Miami's sixth consecutive win since Messi's introduction to their team in July gives the 36-year-old the opportunity to prepare for the 42nd final of his career in the World Cup-style knockout tournament containing teams from Mexico and Major League Soccer in the US.

Nashville will host the match after booking their place in the showpiece affair with a 2-0 win over Monterrey.

Lionel Messi said Thursday he has refound happiness since joining Inter Miami, describing his move to Major League Soccer as the "opposite" of his transfer from Barcelona to Paris Saint-Germain.

Messi, who has scored nine goals in six appearances since joining Miami, joined the MLS club after two seasons in France with PSG.

Speaking to local media for the first time since arriving in Miami, a relaxed Messi talked positively of his life in South Florida and contrasted it with his time in the French capital, which drew to a close earlier this year with sections of PSG's fans booing him.

"As I said at the time, my departure to Paris was not something I wanted, it was not something I wanted to leave Barcelona and, so to speak, it was from one day to the next," he said.

"And, well, I also had to get used to a place that was totally different from where I had been living all my life, both in terms of the city and in a sporting sense, and, well, it was difficult, but the opposite of what is happening to me now here," he said.

Messi had been with Barcelona from the age of 13, when he moved from Argentina to join the Spanish giants and his move, after years of success, was primarily the result of financial difficulties at the club.

There had been speculation that Messi might return to Barcelona or join the wave of players heading to the Saudi league but Messi said he was pleased with his decision.

"I can tell you that I am very happy with the decision we made, not only for the game, for how it is going, but for my family, for how we live day by day, for how we enjoy the city, for this new experience and the reception of the people that was extraordinary from the first day, not only in Miami," he said.

- 'Family decision' -

"I made two away trips with the team and the treatment of the people towards me was spectacular. So I am grateful and happy for the moment I am living and above all to be able to continue enjoying what I liked all my life, to play and to be able to do it in this way with joy," he said, stressing his decision had made together with his family.

The seven-times Ballon d'Or winner has the chance to win his first trophy when Miami take on Nashville on Saturday in the final of the Leagues Cup.

It would also be his club's first triumph in just their third season of existence.

"It would be amazing, wouldn't it? Both for me and for all the people who are fans of the club, for the club itself," he said.

"We want to be a point of reference and winning a title would help a lot in that. It is a very young club, it has been around for a very short time, and to win our first title would be great for all of us," he said.

Despite huge expectations and the hope that the Argentine World Cup winner will lead the sport to new heights in the United States, Messi said he was simply enjoying the game and his life.

"The truth is that I don't think about all those things, I simply came here to play, to continue enjoying football, which is what I have liked all my life and I chose this place for that reason, above all things," he said.

Messi said his family had settled in well, despite them not yet having found a permanent home in the area and he said that he enjoyed to be part of the Spanish-speaking community in South Florida.

"From the beginning, since my arrival, the welcome was impressive, it is a city with many Latinos, and that makes everything much easier too," he said.

"The Latinos are much closer, much more demonstrative, always showing affection, closeness, and I think that is the most important, the healthiest and the most beautiful thing in order to be able to settle in and enjoy what you do," he said.

"I already knew the city pretty well, how the people were. I already loved it....but to be living here every day and passing all of my time here has let me get a lot closer to the city and the people here.

"I'm happy, I'm enjoying this new chapter of my life, the experience of living in the United States, which was something I always had in mind to do."

Lionel Messi leads MLS side Inter Miami to Leagues Cup win against Nashville SC.

Lionel Messi was hailed as the "best in the world" as he scored a 10th goal in seven games to help his Inter Miami side to their first trophy.

The 36-year-old Argentinian fired into the top corner from outside the box to give Miami the lead against Nashville SC in the Leagues Cup final.

Fafa Picault levelled in the second half to send the game to penalties.

Miami sealed a 10-9 shootout win when Drake Callender saved Nashville goalkeeper Elliot Panicco's spot-kick.

Miami had the worst record in Major League Soccer this season before World Cup-winning forward Messi arrived last month alongside former Barcelona team-mates Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets.

They are now unbeaten in seven games on their way to winning the Leagues Cup, a tournament featuring MLS and Mexican Liga MX clubs.

It was the club's first trophy since being formed in 2020.

They also have the chance to reach another final when they play Cincinnati in the semi-final of the US Open Cup on Wednesday.

Co-owner David Beckham said the former Barcelona trio were instrumental in the club's change in fortunes: "It is like a movie, you watch these players play and, emotionally, everything about their play is beautiful."

Spain midfielder Busquets added: "The team is growing by leaps and bounds and we are very happy.

"We are making a solid team - and then we have Leo, who makes a difference because he's the best in the world."

The win also meant seven-time Ballon d'Or winner Messi - who was named player of the tournament - has now won 44 trophies, more than any other player.

US Open Cup: Lionel Messi scores penalty as Inter Miami win semi-final shootout

Inter Miami came back from 2-0 down to reach their second final since Lionel Messi joined the MLS side last month.

The Argentina forward, 36, had two assists in a thrilling US Open Cup semi-final at FC Cincinnati, which ended 3-3 after extra time.

It was the first time Messi failed to score for Miami, in his eighth game for the club, but he converted his penalty as they won the shootout 5-4 in Ohio.

Miami also beat Nashville on penalties to win the Leagues Cup on Saturday.

That was the club's first major honour since being formed as an expansion team in 2020.

They will now make their first appearance in the final of the US Open Cup, America's oldest and most prestigious knockout football competition, which dates back to 1913.

Miami will host the Houston Dynamo on 27 September after they beat Real Salt Lake 3-1 after extra-time.

Cincinnati were top of the MLS standings when the season was paused for the Leagues Cup in July while Miami were bottom.

But Miami are unbeaten in eight games after signing Messi and his former Barcelona team-mates Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba.

Cincinnati led 2-0 with 22 minutes remaining after goals by Luciano Acosta and Brandon Vazquez before Messi twice crossed for Ecuadorian striker Leonardo Campana to score with headers - the equaliser coming deep into stoppage time.

Josef Martinez put Gerardo Martino's Miami side in front early in extra time from a Benjamin Cremaschi pass, before Yuya Kubo made it 3-3 on 114 minutes.

With the shootout level at 4-4, Miami goalkeeper Drake Callender saved Nick Hagglund's penalty before Miami-born Cremaschi, 18, converted the decisive spot-kick.

Lionel Messi: World Cup winner helps Inter Miami beat Los Angeles FC

Lionel Messi laid on two assists to help Inter Miami beat MLS champions Los Angeles FC 3-1 at BMO Stadium.

Facundo Farias, Jordi Alba and Leonardo Campana scored to cancel out Ryan Hollingshead's effort for the hosts.

The statement victory against last season's MLS Cup winners puts Miami nine points shy of the play-offs with nine games to play.

Since Messi, 36, made his debut on 22 July, Inter Miami have won the Leagues Cup and are unbeaten in 11 fixtures.

The Argentine World Cup winner has scored 11 goals and chipped in with five assists in 11 appearances across all competitions.

Inter Miami return to the DRV PNK Stadium in Fort Lauderdale for their next match against Sporting Kansas City on 10 September.

Messi attracts Hollywood's A-listers
Messi is regarded as football royalty and he was watched by British royalty with Prince Harry taking up the opportunity to see the former Barcelona and Paris St-Germain forward in the flesh.

Actors Leonardo DiCaprio, Will Ferrell, Tom Holland, Toby Maguire, Owen Wilson and Gerard Butler were also named on the 'notable attendees list', while musicians Liam Gallagher, Selena Gomez, Tyga, BReal and Nas also packed in to the 22,000-seater stadium.

Inter Miami coach Tata Martino was non-committal when asked about the availability of Messi and fellow standout Jordi Alba for Wednesday’s home match against Toronto FC.

“Messi and Alba will train in the full session today with the team, and after that we'll see if they're available to play and to what extent,” Martino told reporters Tuesday. "Beginning on Wednesday, we have six matches in 18 days, which is one match every three days, including the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup final.”

It’s clear Inter Miami is wrestling with several factors that include resting Messi, competing for their second championship next week, and vying for a spot in the MLS playoff race this season.

Lionel Messi: Argentine forced off with 'old injury' for Inter Miami as US Open Cup final looms.

Lionel Messi was forced off after 37 minutes on his return to action for Inter Miami - but his team-mates sealed a 4-0 win over Toronto FC.

The Argentine, absent for Miami's 5-2 defeat by Atlanta on Saturday due to fatigue, could miss next week's US Open Cup final against Houston Dynamo.

Manager Gerardo Martino said the 36-year-old is carrying an "old injury".

The seven-time Ballon d'Or winner was not used by Argentina boss Lionel Scaloni against Bolivia last week.

Messi's former Barcelona team-mate Jordi Alba also suffered an injury against Toronto and Martino said both players would definitely miss Sunday's game against Orlando City.

"There is no chance they will be there on Sunday," said Martino.

"I know we have a final to play [on Wednesday] but they won't go near the pitch if they can't play."

Miami has not lost any of the 11 matches in which Messi has featured since he joined the MLS club in July, after leaving French champions Paris St-Germain at the end of the 2022-23 season.

The score was level at 0-0 when captain Messi left the field against Toronto, but his replacement, Robert Taylor, scored twice and Facundo Farias and Benjamin Cremaschi also found the net in a comfortable victory.

"The scans [Messi] had with the national team, they didn't show any injury. We still saved him to be safe," Martino said.

"We don't think he has a muscular injury. That's also from a conversation I just had with him.

"But we have to continue being careful. We'll look at it the next few days."

Argentina manager Scaloni said Messi did not feature for his country last week because he "was not ready to play" and the World Cup winner "did not feel comfortable"

Lionel Messi will not join another team on loan when the Major League Soccer season ends, says Guillem Balague.

The Inter Miami captain, 36, has been linked with a return to Barcelona and a switch to the Saudi Pro League.

Inter Miami are out of play-off contention after Saturday's 1-0 loss to FC Cincinnati and their season ends on 21 October.

Argentine World Cup winner Messi has only played 72 minutes in the MLS since early September due to injury.

After the MLS regular season ends, Argentina have World Cup qualifiers against Uruguay and Brazil on 17 and 22 November and Messi is then expected to take a month's holiday.

"Messi will have around one month holiday, like other footballers. So forget any move to Saudi or similar," says Spanish football expert Balague.

He will then return for pre-season in Miami with the MLS new season starting in February.

Expressing a desire to spend the holidays at home with family, Inter Miami's Lionel Messi confirmed earlier reports that he will not go out on loan this winter to an overseas club.

Reported rumours had Messi possibly headed to the Saudi Pro League this winter or potentially returning to his former club, FC Barcelona. Now, the only club match Messi has on his mind in the foreseeable future is Inter Miami's season finale Saturday against Charlotte FC.

European football is under threat from Saudi and America. Haaland will take it this year.

Lionel Messi is going to have a relatively quiet next full year amid the lack of activity playing for Inter Miami. The MLS team didn't make it to the final stages of the tournament and Leo will have a lot of free time in his hands. According to Goal, that time will compensate with his international football activity. The Argentina National Team has two tournaments in 2024 that Messi may get the chance to play. One of the Copa America and the other one is the Summer Olympics that will take place in Paris next year. According to this report, organizers of the event in Paris were the ones who decided to extend Messi an invitation to be part of the tournament. By that time, Leo will already be 37 years old but he is still playing at the highest level with Argentina.

Men's Ballon d'Or 2023: Lionel Messi wins eighth award, beating Erling Haaland to trophy

Argentina and Inter Miami forward Lionel Messi has won the Men's Ballon d'Or for an eighth time.

The 36-year-old was recognised at the ceremony in Paris after helping his country win the World Cup in Qatar last year.

England and Real Madrid midfielder Jude Bellingham won the Kopa Trophy for the world's best player aged under 21.

Messi won his record-extending Ballon d'Or award ahead of Manchester City forward Erling Haaland.

The Norway international scored a record-breaking 36 goals in 35 league games and hit 52 in all competitions as City won the Treble of Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup.

He was recognised for his achievements with the Gerd Muller Trophy for best goalscorer.

"I want to thank Manchester City, the whole club," said Haaland.

"I also want to thank my family and all the people around me for making me who I am today."

Six of the shirts worn by Lionel Messi during Argentina's World Cup-winning campaign are to be sold at auction.

Lionel Messi scored two goals and converted from the spot during the penalty shootout as Argentina beat France in the 2002 World Cup final.

Six of the shirts worn by Lionel Messi during Argentina's World Cup-winning campaign are to be sold at auction.

Captain Messi, 36, lifted the trophy after his side beat France on penalties in last December's final in Qatar.

His shirt from the final is included in the set, which are expected to fetch more than £8m in the auction hosted by Sotheby's in New York.

The record for a game-worn football shirt is Diego Maradona's 'Hand of God' jersey, which sold for £7.1m in 2022.

Brahm Wachter, Sotheby's head of modern collectibles, said the sale of Messi's six shirts "stands as a monumental occasion in auction history".

"The 2022 Fifa World Cup stands as one of the greatest events in sports history, intrinsically connected to Messi's valiant journey and firmly establishing his status as the greatest player of all time," Wachter said.

Messi, an eight-time Ballon d'Or winner, became the first player in World Cup history to score in the group stage, last 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals and final of a single tournament.

Wachter added: "It is an honour for Sotheby's to present and exhibit these invaluable collectables to the public, which encapsulate the sheer brilliance of a player who has redefined the boundaries of football excellence."

The collection of Messi's shirts will be on view at Sotheby's New York headquarters in a free, public exhibition during the bidding process, which is open between 30 November and 14 December.

Messi played in all seven of Argentina's 2022 World Cup matches, but only two of the three shirts he wore during the group stage will be auctioned, after Australia squad member Cameron Devlin swapped shirts with the former Barcelona forward during the tournament.

Sotheby's said: "A portion of the proceeds from the auction will be donated to Unicas Project, led by Sant Joan de Deu (SJD) Barcelona Children's Hospital with the support of the Leo Messi Foundation, to meet the needs of children suffering from rare diseases."

Lionel Messi: Inter Miami forward is 'gripping' United States, says Guillem Balague

Roll up, roll up and welcome to the Lionel Messi show, currently the hottest ticket in the USA. A flash in the pan or finally a changing of the guard in American sport?

America is in the grip of Messi madness after he signed for Inter Miami from Paris St-Germain in the summer. Football in the country has been here before. But never quite like this.

His move to the United States was as reasoned, calculated and well planned as his departure from Barcelona to Paris was clumsy, rushed and unwelcome.

The timing could not have been better with the Copa America taking place there next year and the final set to be played in Miami at the Hard Rock Stadium on July 14. The Club World Cup is due to be held in the States in 2025, and what will be the biggest World Cup yet is coming to the USA, Canada and Mexico in 2026.

When it comes to a well-oiled machine looking to promote and grow a brand, nobody does it better than the USA. With all this marked in, plus the possibility that the country could also be hosting the next Women's World Cup in 2027, it's safe to say that if football - sorry, soccer - doesn't take off in the USA after all that, then it is difficult to imagine when it ever will.

Will the arrival into Major League Soccer of Messi, regarded by many as the greatest player in the history of the game, finally burn an indelible brand into America's sports-mad psyche and establish its place alongside team sports like American football, basketball or baseball, or will it turn out to be another false dawn?

How has Messi's arrival changed Inter Miami and the MLS?

If there's one thing American sports fans adore more than the teams they support it is the passion they feel for superstars playing for them. Think Michael Jordan, Tom Brady, Wayne Gretzky and you get the idea. Now add the name Lionel Messi.

The New York Red Bulls have offered a special offer holiday ticket promotion involving next season's home opener and the derby against rival New York City FC. But there's a catch. If the first match sees them drawn against Inter Miami, it won't count as part of the deal. Written in small print alongside the offer are the words, "If RBNY plays Inter Miami CF in the home opener, each home opener ticket will be replaced with a ticket to RBNY's 2nd home match."

The name 'Lionel Messi' doesn't feature but then it doesn't really have to. Surely no team will be including Inter Miami tickets in cheap seats deals in the new season.

No-one at club or league level was prepared for the effect Messi's signing would have on them.

Season ticket packages for next season are coming out at double what they were in 2023, which makes Inter Miami one of the most expensive tickets in the world - and this for a league not generally considered to be among the top level worldwide.

The club's Instagram account has gone from one million followers to 15 million.

If you want to catch the little magician when Inter Miami play away from home be prepared to dig deep.

For example, if you had wanted to watch Columbus Crew this year you could do so for as little as $40. Next season they will be charging a minimum of $382 for a seat in the 'nosebleed' section for the visit of Inter Miami, going up to $680.

If you happened to be in Orlando visiting Mickey Mouse and fancied catching a game, then last season you could have watched the locals for around $97. If you're in town when Leo visits Orlando City next season, be prepared to shell out more than $1,500 for a seat on the secondary market.

The atmosphere at games borders on the surreal. No-one is really watching the game other than through the participation of Messi.

If he is 50 metres from the ball everyone is still watching him. When he walks up to take a corner it is celebrated almost like a goal. It is almost like watching an event, a happening, that is occurring within another event.

What about buying a shirt then? Good luck!

Such is the frenzy for buying replica shirts that Adidas are struggling to meet demand in certain sizes. Even for next season.

And if you can find a shirt - and apparently even Inter Miami co-owner David Beckham has been finding it tricky to get some to give to people as gifts - there is logically a dearth of the numbers 1 and 0 and the letters M, E, S and I.

Pre Messi, Inter Miami had a stadium with plenty of empty seats. An extra stand was built to accommodate demand for when he arrived.

New stadium and new approach from all involved with Inter Miami

Construction has now begun on the Inter Miami CF stadium, set in a 58-acre public park, and scheduled to open in 2025.

The team's budget has gone from $60m to $300m and tickets are sold out within minutes whenever Inter Miami play - home or away.

Michelle Kaufman has been a sportswriter for around 35 years, most of which has been spent writing predominantly about soccer for the Miami Herald.

"My life was a lot quieter and less complicated before this man arrived in my life," she told me when we met up recently in Miami at a Soccerex exhibition.

"I'm spending about as much time focusing on him as I am my husband which is probably not a good thing.

"There is a Messi cult following that I have never seen before. I am doing a podcast on him and I have people watching it from Gabon, from Tangier [in Morocco]. I'm looking at the map and wondering where these countries are."

The Inter Miami press office has never had to deal with anything like it - not only the best player in the world, but also a celebrity.

So how are things going for Messi since he arrived?

Messi certainly hit the floor running.

In front of a capacity crowd of 20,000, including the likes of LeBron James, Serena Williams and Kim Kardashian watching on from luxury suites, he scored a stoppage time free-kick winner to seal a 2-1 win over Liga MX side Cruz Azul.

When he arrived the team were languishing at the bottom of the MLS table.

Less than a month after his arrival, he scored a screamer to earn a draw against Nashville in the Leagues Cup final to secure the club's first piece of silverware after a 10-9 win on penalties.

Buoyed by cup success, Messi's Miami went on a 12-match unbeaten run to force themselves into contention for a play-off place that would have been almost unthinkable when he arrived.

In the end it was a bridge too far, especially after a muscle injury caused Messi to miss six games in September and early October.

This is now a side transformed after a roller coaster of a campaign. Failure to make it into the play-offs means he can now look forward to the longest holiday break he has ever had.

He will have about a month and a half off, although that will be interspersed with games for his country. The dream for many football fans is that Messi will remain in contention for Argentina at the 2026 World Cup.

Off the pitch, things are going well, although the US media expected more appearances from him.

He did only one press conference when he arrived and sports media are used to more regular contact. That said, he has spoken more than ever, twice after a game for Apple TV, five individual interviews after the August press conference, as well as in the big presentation on his arrival.

If the media want more from him then they are going to be disappointed.

Messi, the Inter Miami captain

He now has the captain's armband, although it was not what he wanted but rather something that was thrust upon him.

And with the surging demand for anything Messi-related that can fill column inches and air time, going out in public is proving difficult. When he first arrived he was pictured visiting the supermarket. This is no longer possible because everybody knows he is in town, even those that do not follow football.

Meanwhile, he is committed to the Miami cause. He flew to Paris for the Ballon d'Or ceremony, arriving at 8am on the Monday and flying back to Miami immediately afterwards in the first minutes of the Tuesday to be back for training.

He has also joined the players' Whatsapp group, where he has shared some of his match tickets with those that need them. He even handed a penalty to his team-mate and forward Josef Martinez because he had been going through a spell without scoring.

At home, his wife Antonella is helping him settle, finding things out about Miami, such as the best places to eat and enjoy, as well as honing his look and his image off the pitch. He is more confident these days, he has found his place in the world.

They were no strangers to Miami and the Messis have got an impressive property in the area that they have rented for years.

He has been reunited with former Barca team-mates Jordi Alba and Sergi Busquets, while Luis Suarez will almost certainly also soon join them.

His time in Paris was not the happiest of his life. The fans didn't get him. But now things are different and his next club target will be to go looking for victory for Inter Miami in MLS.

As long as he is playing in US, the game is the states is going to keep on rising at a rapid pace.

In a rather unexpectedly astonishing development, World Cup winner and Inter Miami's star forward Lionel Messi has been excluded from the list of best players of the Major League Soccer's (MLS) 2023 season, reported goal.com.

Messi's exclusion from the list might seem astonishing to some fans as the former Barcelona striker has made a significant impact in boosting the league's popularity around the world and in the United States as well.

However, according to goal.com, Messi's exclusion from the league's Best XI — based primarily on players' performances in regular season matches — is no surprise as the Argentine forward only featured in six regular season games.

Messi named Time's Athlete of the Year for 2023

Lionel Messi wins even when he's not playing.

The World Cup winner picked up another honor, being crowned Time's Athlete of the Year for 2023 on Tuesday, less than a year after his move to the United States.

Messi, who's fresh off winning his record-extending eighth Ballon d'Or award as the best male soccer player, received the coveted title ahead of prestigious athletes such as Erling Haaland, Novak Djokovic, and last year's winner, LeBron James.

The 36-year-old is currently enjoying a well-deserved break after taking the United States by storm following his electrifying arrival at Major League Soccer club Inter Miami in July.

Messi helped David Beckham's Miami side capture the Leagues Cup trophy in the summer shortly after a surreal debut in which he scored the game-winning goal off a free-kick to cap his first game in pink.

"You couldn't have written it better," said Beckham, who co-owns Inter Miami. "It was for MLS and for America. It was for the future of the game."

Messi ended the Leagues Cup, a tournament between MLS and teams from Mexico's Liga MX, with 10 goals in seven games.

His arrival triggered a major boost in popularity for Inter Miami, a team that was struggling in last place of the MLS standings before signing Messi, and the league as a whole.

Inter Miami's popularity and ticket prices skyrocketed after his lucrative transfer. The same was true away from home, as teams charged a premium wherever the former Barcelona star, who finished the 2022-23 season with PSG, was expected to play when Inter Miami hit the road.

Messi had several options before joining Miami. He revealed that his first choice would've been to rejoin Barcelona but said "it was not possible."

Although Miami wasn't his first option, Messi is looking forward to the "special challenges" ahead of his first full season in North America.

Inter Miami failed to make the MLS playoffs, while Messi struggled with injuries to end the 2023 season. He had one goal and two assists in six MLS appearances last term.

We are lucky to be living in the same era where we can see his football magic live.

Argentine football legend Lionel Messi has been honored as Time's Athlete of the Year for 2023, securing a coveted spot on the magazine's cover.

The recognition comes in acknowledgment of Messi's profound influence on U.S. football since joining Inter Miami.

Messi's accolade reflects his ongoing success and impact beyond the field, particularly in elevating the profile of football in the United States.

The 36-year-old, a World Cup winner and celebrated FC Barcelona icon, shared insights with TIME regarding his decision to depart Barcelona and turn down an offer from Saudi Arabia.

In the interview, Messi revealed, "My first option was to return to Barcelona, but it was not possible. I tried to return, and it did not happen."

He went on to discuss the attractive options he had, including the possibility of joining the Saudi league, given his role as the country's tourism ambassador.

Ultimately, Messi opted for Major League Soccer (MLS) and joined Inter Miami, a decision he found equally intriguing.

Time's recognition of Messi as the Athlete of the Year highlights not only his sporting prowess but also his influence in shaping football narratives globally.

The accolade adds to Messi's extensive list of achievements and reinforces his status as one of the most iconic figures in the world of sports.

Additionally, David Beckham, co-owner of Inter Miami, shared his astonishment at Messi's debut performance for the club, particularly emphasizing Messi's remarkable free-kick against Cruz Azul.

Beckham remarked, "I remember getting in the car on the way back, and I said to Victoria, ‘I’m not even sure I can drive home.’ You couldn’t have written it better."

Messi's journey from a talented youngster in Argentina to becoming an international football icon has been marked by extraordinary achievements and milestones.

His impact on the sport, both on and off the field, continues to resonate globally, making him a fitting recipient of Time's prestigious Athlete of the Year award for 2023.

Lionel Messi's Major League Soccer jersey, particularly the No 10 shirt for Inter Miami, has earned the spotlight as one of the most influential fashion pieces of 2023.

The recent New York auction of Messi's jerseys catapulted his popularity globally, with fans flocking to Miami to witness the eight-time Ballon D'Or winner in action.

Surprisingly, it's his jersey that has captured widespread attention, earning recognition from lifestyle magazine Vogue as one of the most sought-after apparel items in the past year.

Vogue highlighted the uniqueness of Messi's Inter Miami jersey, describing its unexpected shade of "un-Barbie pink" as a fashion phenomenon that disrupted the norm in football apparel.

The generic Inter Miami jersey, following Messi's arrival, quickly sold out, leading to a flourishing bootleg industry. Even after five months, the official Messi jersey, featuring his iconic number 10, continues to be in high demand, with a waitlist for most sizes on the Adidas website.

Messi's fashion influence extends beyond the field, with high-profile personalities like LeBron James, Kim Kardashian, and Selena Gomez spotted in the audience at Inter Miami's games.

Additionally, Messi played a pivotal role in helping David Beckham's team secure their first silverware, the 2023 Leagues Cup, contributing a total of 10 goals to the victory.

Six of Lionel Messi's shirts worn during the 2022 World Cup sold for a combined $7.8m (£6.1m) at a Sotheby's auction in New York.

Messi captained Argentina to victory at the tournament with his country beating France on penalties in the final.

The six jerseys were from the first half of the final, semi-final, quarter-final, last-16 tie and two group games.

The record for a game-worn football shirt is Diego Maradona's 'Hand of God' jersey, which sold for £7.1m in 2022.

Messi, an eight-time Ballon d'Or winner, became the first player in World Cup history to score in the group stage, last 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals and final of a single tournament.

He played in all seven of Argentina's 2022 World Cup matches, but only two of the three shirts Messi wore during the group stage will be auctioned, after Australia squad member Cameron Devlin swapped shirts with the former Barcelona forward during the tournament.

Sotheby's said: "A portion of the proceeds from the auction will be donated to Unicas Project, led by Sant Joan de Deu Barcelona Children's Hospital with the support of the Leo Messi Foundation, to meet the needs of children suffering from rare diseases."

Lionel Messi named icon by Royal Caribbean International for 'Icon of the Seas'

Lionel Messi, the football player for Inter Miami CF and Argentina, is the official icon for Royal Caribbean International's newest ship, "Icon of the Seas".

On January 23, 2024, at an official naming ceremony in Miami, Florida, the brand's first Icon-class ship will be christened by the most admired football player in history.

After Royal Caribbean and Major League Soccer team Inter Miami teamed together to become the club's primary partner and official travel partner, Messi assumed his iconic role.

“I’m thrilled and honoured to join the Royal Caribbean family to celebrate the arrival of the game-changing Icon of the Seas,” said Messi, who won a record eighth Men’s Ballon d’Or award in October 2023. “Icon is beyond anything else that’s out there for family vacations, with incredible never-before-seen features, all designed for making memories together.”

Messi signed a contract with Inter Miami as a player in July 2023 after having a record-breaking career playing for FC Barcelona in Spain and Paris Saint-Germain in France, where he won four Champions Leagues and ten La Liga titles.

When the ship's itineraries were announced in October 2022, Royal Caribbean's Icon of the Seas broke even more records, giving the cruise line its greatest booking day and week overall.

The ship features the largest pool at sea, Royal Bay, and six record-breaking waterslides. Additionally, it is the first Royal Caribbean ship to run on LNG and to feature Scanship's waste-to-energy facility, microwave-assisted pyrolysis (MAPs), on board.

Messi, Bonmati nominated for FIFA best player awards

Lionel Messi and Aitana Bonmati were named as finalists for the FIFA best players of the year awards by world football's governing body on Thursday.

Messi was awarded a record-extending eighth Ballon d'Or crown in October in Paris, while Bonmati took the women's prize after starring for Spain in their Women's World Cup triumph.

Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe are the other nominees for the FIFA men's best player award, with Bonmati's Spain teammate Jenni Hermoso and Colombian teenage sensation Linda Caicedo also named on the women's shortlist.

The awards ceremony will take place in London on January 15. The men's finalists were named based on performances from December 19, 2022 until August 20 this year, with the women's decided by achievements between August 1, 2022 and August 20, 2023, the day of the World Cup final.

Messi won his second FIFA best player trophy last year after helping Argentina win the World Cup. Haaland, who finished second to Messi in the Ballon d'Or voting, scored 52 goals in his first season at Manchester City last term to help the English club to a treble of Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League titles.

France striker Mbappe scored 41 goals in all competitions to help Paris Saint-Germain win Ligue 1.

Another World Cup? Anything is possible for Fifa World Cup winner Lionel Messi: The miracle-worker still defying logic with Argentina and Inter Miami

Lionel Messi was "counting down the days" until the start of the 2022 World Cup. He was so excited. But nervous too. Argentina were on a 36-game unbeaten run but that had only intensified the pressure on the recently crowned Copa America winners and their talismanic captain, who admitted on the eve of the tournament, "We are a little scared because we want it to go well."

Truth be told, though, Messi needed it to go well. His World Cup legacy was on the line. Granted, he had lifted the Golden Ball at the 2014 tournament in Brazil but it was a pyrrhic victory after the most frustrating of final defeats to Germany.

Messi's inability to deliver in the biggest game in football was used as a stick with which to undermine his claim on the title of the greatest of all time, evidence that he could not be considered in the same class as Diego Maradona or Pele.

Lionel Messi will miss 7 MLS games for Inter Miami next season

Lionel Messi will miss at least seven games for Inter Miami in Major League Soccer next season.

Messi completed his first season with Miami in November, where the club finished 14th in the Eastern Conference standings and missed out on the play-offs. The Argentina legend scored 11 goals in his 14 appearances after signing for the club in June as a free agent, following his exit from Paris Saint-Germain.

The 2024 MLS season is due to get underway in February, as Messi prepares for his first full campaign in the United States. However, before the season has already begun, Miami will be aware that their star player will be absent for at least seven games.

This is due to Messi being likely to have commitments with the Argentina national team throughout 2024. As a result, Messi will be absent from the Miami squad while he features for his country in their respective matches.

The Copa America takes place this summer across June and July, where Messi will be looking to help Argentina win another major title after the World Cup triumph in 2022. Messi will therefore miss at least five MLS games for Miami while the tournament is taking place.

Those five games will come from June 15 to July 6 and will include matchups against Philadelphia Union, Colombus Crew, Nashville SC, Charlotte FC, and FC Cincinnati.

Messi and Argentina have three group games against Chile, Peru, and another team that is yet to qualify. The final for the Copa America is on July 14, just three days before Miami hosts Toronto at the DRV PNK Stadium in MLS.

Miami could also be without Messi for two of their games towards the start of the season. March will see a FIFA international break take place, although it has yet to be confirmed what matches Argentina will play.

Messi's absence would surely be a big blow to Inter Miami as they will be playing against some really good oppositions during that period.

Messi calls former Manchester United player to join Inter Miami

Inter Miami continues with the preparations for the next season in which it will have a new addition, Luis Suarez, but Lionel Messi and David Beckham are not done yet as they hope to coax more signings to the east coast.

In addition to Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets, Suarez has joined the team led by Tata Martino, with whom they hope to get a good amount of goals. But both Messi and Beckham know that they need more reinforcements and one of the lines where they are looking for reinforcements is in defense.

Lionel Messi was not the real reason Luis Suarez joined Inter MiamiParker Johnson
That is why Messi is trying to convince the former Manchester United and current Boca Juniors defender, Marcos Rojo, to come to the United States to partner up with him in Miami.

The journalist Hernan Castillo together with Augusto Cesar indicated that "there are strong soundings for the captain of the La Ribera team".

The call from the United States would be rivalled by Palmeiras of Brazil, but the captain must prepare for preseason with Boca Juniors which starts on January 2. There he will be reunited with his teammates in preparation for 2024, in which there will be several objectives at local level and the Copa Sudamericana.

Who is Marcos Rojo?
Rojo joined Boca Juniors at the beginning of January in 2021 from Manchester United, where he spent seven years competing in the Premier League and UEFA Champions League.

His time in England was mixed, as he gained a reputation for dishonest tackles and plays, but he did manage to leave with four trophies, winning the FA Cup, FA Community Shield, EFL Cup and UEFA Europa League.

Despite starting strongly, making 95 appearances in his first three seasons, he fell sharply out of favor and in his final four years in Manchester, he made just 27 appearances.

He's also played 61 times for Argentina but hasn't had a cap since 2019, meaning that the 33-year-old wasn't a part of their 2022 FIFA World Cup winning squad.

Lionel Messi gets nominated for another award — but he doesn't want to win it

Lionel Messi was not happy after receiving a nomination for an award that he has never received and that nobody wants to win.

Messi has won nearly everything imaginable on a football ground, making him one of the best players of all time, and his trophy cabinet proves it according to Talk Sport.

Almost everything, actually, since the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner is currently a nominee for the ESLAND Awards 2024's Anger of the Year category.

Don't worry if you've never heard of the ESLAND Awards; they are an annual celebration of Spanish-speaking content artists, and Messi made it onto the shortlist last year following an outburst.

Following his eighth Ballon d'Or victory in October, Messi took a jab at Spanish streamer Ibai Llanos.

The Argentina international charged that the Twitch celebrity, who is close friends with Messi's friends Sergio Aguero and Gerard Pique, had betrayed his confidence by disclosing personal information.

While speaking to Llanos after winning the Ballon d'Or, he smiled as he said: “I’m not going to answer you anymore because you make everything public."

"I don’t like it… The Ballon d’Or? Now you are changing the topic you son of a b****.”

Even though Messi's remarks were lighthearted, it was still a somewhat stunning moment for a guy who is always so composed and placid in interviews.

And it has garnered him a nomination for Anger of the Year at the ESLAND Awards, which is selected by public votes.

Lionel Messi: Napkin which detailed Argentine's first Barcelona contract to be auctioned

The napkin on which 13-year-old Lionel Messi's first Barcelona contract was signed is to be auctioned - with a starting price of £300,000.

The napkin, signed in December 2000, carries a commitment from then Barca director Carles Rexach to sign Messi.

It was also signed by Josep Minguella, a transfer advisor to the Spanish club, and agent Horacio Gaggioli, who recommended the Argentine.

Messi joined Barca a month later and went on to be their record goalscorer.

He made his debut aged 16 and scored 672 goals in 778 games for the Catalan club.

Now 36, Messi won 10 La Liga and four Champions League titles at Barcelona before leaving for Paris St-Germain in 2021.

The napkin was signed at a meeting arranged by Rexach, who invited Messi's father Jorge to lunch after concerns from the Messi family about a lack of response from Barcelona following the teenager's initial trial.

Written in blue ink, the agreement on the napkin reads: "In Barcelona, on 14 December 2000 and the presence of Messrs Minguella and Horacio, Carles Rexach, FC Barcelona's sporting director, hereby agrees, under his responsibility and regardless of any dissenting opinions, to sign the player Lionel Messi, provided that we keep to the amounts agreed upon."

The napkin will go under the hammer via British auction house Bonhams in March.

Head of fine books and manuscripts at Bonhams Ian Ehling said: "This is one of the most thrilling items I have ever handled.

"Yes, it's a paper napkin, but it's the famous napkin that was at the inception of Lionel Messi's career.

"It changed the life of Messi, the future of FC Barcelona, and was instrumental in giving some of the most glorious moments of football to billions of fans around the globe."

There were chants of "refund", while a speech by Inter co-owner David Beckham was drowned out by booing.

The Hong Kong government said match organisers Tatler Asia may face a reduction in funding.

Forward Lionel Messi has defended himself after local fans booed Inter Miami because he missed a pre-season friendly in Hong Kong.

"I always want to play, especially in these games where we travel so far and people want to see our games," he said.

"Unfortunately this happens in football. In any game it can happen that you can't play.

"I hope we can return and play a game in Hong Kong."

The 36-year-old, who has won the Ballon d'Or eight times, said the injury is improving and he could feature against Japanese champions Vissel Kobe in Tokyo on Wednesday.

"I don't know if I can or not, but I feel a lot better and really want to do it," he said.

"This afternoon we're going to practise; we'll try again. I have a good feeling, compared to how I was."

Lionel Messi participated in a friendly against Japan after skipping a game in Hong Kong, infuriating Chinese supporters and igniting a conspiracy theory.

With the intention of "embarrassing" Hong Kong, the football player and his team Inter Miami were accused of having "political motives" by the state media outlet Global Times, according to BBC.

Inter Miami star Lionel Messi will be set to play a full 90 minute match in Major League Soccer's season opener against Real Salt Lake on Wednesday night.

Messi had been plagued with injuries that de-railed the club's preseason tour of Asia - prompting the cancellation of two Argentina friendlies in China.

But for the opening game of the season, Messi will be set to play the full match, according to Tata Martino.

Inter Miami’s Lionel Messi named No 1 athlete in US surpassing Michael Jordon

Star Argentinian footballer and Inter Miami's captain Lionel Messi has become the most popular athlete in the United States, surpassing legendary athletes such as Michael Jordan, LeBron James and Tiger Woods, according to a poll conducted by SSRS, Essentially Sports reported.

It is the first time in 30 years that a soccer player has topped the charts.

According to SSRS, players like Jordan, Woods, Peyton Manning, Kobe Bryant, and Tom Brady have topped the list every year since 1995.

Messi's announcement of his merger with Inter Miami in June 2023 saw an increase in the US Major League Soccer (MLS) fan base from 35.3% to 37%.

The poll further shared that Messi has been more popular in the US since 2021 compared to Cristiano Ronaldo.

Lionel Messi's napkin containing a guarantee of his contract with FC Barcelona will be up for auction soon and is expected to fetch $635,000 in the auction, WIONreported.

The napkin, placed under the title "The World's Most Famous Napkin," has been displayed in New York, ahead of the bidding on March 18, to gather interest in the soccer memorabilia.

The estimated selling price of the napkin is between $380,000 and $635,000. However, the head of fine books and manuscripts at Bonhams New YorkIan Ehling said: "I expect it to sell for much more."

Lionel Messi's Hong Kong fans who bought tickets to a friendly that he skipped at the last minute will get a 50% refund, the match organiser said.

Messi's absence from the game in February, which he blamed on an injury, sent Chinse fans seething for weeks.

Ticketholders applying for refunds must agree not to pursue legal action, Tatler Asia said.

The refunds could cost up to HK$56m (£5.6m; $7.1m), the publication said.

Fans had paid up to HK$4,880 each to watch the 36-year-old Argentine footballer but Messi remained on the bench throughout the match.

Some 38,000 spectators at the sold-out Hong Kong Stadium booed and demanded refunds at the end of the game.

Leo Messi on retirement: “I know that as soon as I believe that I can no longer perform, or no longer enjoy the game, or not able to help my team-mates, then I will stop”.

“For my retirement, it will not matter what age I am. If I feel good, I will keep playing”.

MESSI COULD BECOME CO-OWNER OF INTER MIAMI

Lionel Messi could become a co-owner of Inter Miami with David Beckham, according to The Sun.

Messi has been a hit since joining MLS, scoring 16 goals in 19 appearances and helping Inter Miami to their first ever trophy – the 2023 Leagues Cup.

But a report in The Sun claims the 36-year-old could be about to help shape the club off the field too.

The outlet writes: “Lionel Messi could become a co-owner of Inter Miami alongside David Beckham - using a very familiar clause.

“Messi took his career to America last year after walking out on French champions PSG and snubbing a move to Saudi Arabia.

“The man who convinced the Argentine icon to head Stateside was majority owner of Inter Miami, Jorge Mas, who also appointed Beckham club president.

“And part of Messi's package was the option to take part ownership of the club without needing a buy-in exercised.

“Beckham had a similar clause when moved from Madrid to LA Galaxy in a high-profile transfer in 2007.

“Messi's option instead gives him direct ownership in just Miami.”

The king has comeback.

Lionel Messi scores for Inter Miami on return from injury

Lionel Messi scored for Inter Miami in a 2-2 MLS draw with Colorado Rapids as he made his return from injury.

The Argentine had missed four games with a hamstring issue and came on for the second half with his side 1-0 down following a Rafael Navarro penalty.

Messi equalised with a left-foot shot before helping set up a goal for team-mate Leonardo Afonso.

Miami could not hold on to the lead, with Cole Bassett equalising for the Rapids in the 88th minute.

"What Leo did is the usual for him, what he provokes in our team, in his team-mates, in the people," said Miami boss Gerard Martino.

"The most important thing is that he felt comfortable, he felt good, he felt loose.

"This will help him to be more confident, especially with regard to the injury, for the second leg in Monterrey."

Miami are away at Monterrey in the return leg of their Concacaf Champions Cup quarter-final on Wednesday having been beaten 2-1 by the Mexican side in the first leg.
