ABOUT THE MEN’S ICC WORLD T20 2020 QUALIFICATION PATHWAY

• To qualify for the men’s ICC World T20 2020 there is a four-step qualification pathway from 2018-2020

• 78 teams will take part in the qualification pathway 2018-2020

• 62 teams will compete in the regional qualifiers 2018

• 25 qualifying teams from the regional qualifiers 2018 will compete in the regional finals 2019

• Six teams from the ICC World T20 2016 which are not in the Top 10 MRF Tyres ICC T20I Team Rankings as at 31/12/2008 will automatically qualify for the ICC World T20 Qualifier, alongside the eight qualifiers from the regional finals.

• The top 10 teams from the MRF Tyres ICC T20I Team Rankings as at 31/12/2018 qualify for the men’s ICC World T20 2020, alongside the six qualifiers from the ICC World T20 Qualifier.

• The men’s ICC World T20 2020 will take place in Australia between 18 October – 15 November 2020

The seven captains of the teams pooled in Group A of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Qualifier 2019 looked forward to the 14-team tournament with enthusiasm during a press conference held at the Dubai International Stadium.

Captains Dion Stvell of Bermuda, Shem Ngoche of Kenya, Merwe Erasmus of Namibia, Pieter Seelar of the Netherlands, Shem Ngoche of Kenya, Assad Vala of Papua New Guinea, Amjad Mahboob of Singapore and Scotland captain Kyle Coetzer took questions from reporters and posed with the trophy in what was their first media interaction ahead of the tournament.

The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2019 is being held in Abu Dhabi and Dubai with the teams fighting for six places in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2020 to be held in Australia next year.

Canada, Hong Kong, Ireland, Jersey, Nigeria, Oman and the United Arab Emirates are in Group B. They play their league matches in Abu Dhabi and will hold their opening press conference on Sunday.

Bermuda captain Dion Stvell: “We are here to showcase our talent. As for Bermuda cricket, I guess we are in the next stage of the qualifiers, so to say. There are 13 teams joining us here and we are looking to compete well against them and move Bermuda cricket forward.”

Kenya captain Shem Ngoche: “It is going to be a really good tournament. As we all know, there are some very good teams here. For us it will be a very important tournament because all of you know where our cricket is. If we get a chance to qualify, it will be the starting point of a new phase for Kenyan cricket.”

Namibia captain Merwe Erasmus: “For Namibia it is an important tournament. We haven’t qualified from one of these (tournaments) yet, so it puts us in a nice space since we have nothing to lose. I expect all the teams to know that we are dangerous as we are a free team. We are in a good group and it is going to be a tough challenge.”

Netherlands captain Pieter Seelaar: “Besides everything that has been said about it being a hard fought tournament, I think there is also going to be a lot of pride and passion on show for us. There is going to be a bit of pressure on us because people label us as bit of favourites. But I think there is going to be some upsets throughout the tournament. As Kyle (Coetzer, Scotland captain) there is going to be excellent talent on show. I am looking forward to see who is going to do well.”

PNG captain Assad Vala: “It is going to be a really important tournament for us and all the teams. We all deserve to be here. We have worked really hard to get here. We have got some really good teams to play against. Hopefully we can get the job done.”

Singapore captain Amjad Mahboob: “This tournament is very important for us. It is the first time Singapore has reached until this level and we are really looking forward to this tournament. I hope we can do our best in this tournament.”

Scotland captain Kyle Coetzer: “We are expecting a hard fought tournament. Every team deserves to be here. There are a lot of powerful teams here and we are expecting a hard fought and challenging tournament. It is vitally important not only for us as Scotland but for every team here so we expect to see some quality cricket I am sure and hopefully we can represent our countries very well.”

It was the second day of warm-ups in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Qualifier 2019, but Scotland and Ireland didn’t get the memo. They played out a thriller in Abu Dhabi, with Scotland prevailing by a run after plenty of huffing and puffing.

Scotland opted to bat at the Tolerance Oval on Tuesday, 15 October, and got off to a terrific start thanks to George Munsey. The opening stand was worth 78 runs, which came in seven overs, but his partner Kyle Coetzer contributed just a 16-ball 15 before falling to George Dockrell. Munsey himself was the next to fall, four overs later, but by that time he had taken the score to 119 in 10 overs.

The middle order couldn’t really capitalise on the foundation laid. Oli Haris hammered an 18-ball 39, but the most the other seven batsmen managed was a 12-ball 17 by Matthew Cross. That was still enough to push their total to a daunting 210/8, but Ireland made a proper fist of the chase.

Despite losing Kevin O’Brien for nought early on, Gareth Delaney and Andrew Balbirnie combined to take the chase forward. Balbirnie hung around, scoring a 48-ball 70, putting on mini partnerships with Harry Tector and Gary Wilson before falling with the total at 154. Then, Mark Adair took charge, scoring a 24-ball 45 to take Ireland to the brink of victory.

However, his dismissal in the penultimate ball by Safyaan Sharif turned the momentum Scotland’s way, and they just about survived.

Earlier in the day, at the ICC Academy Ground 2, African rivals Namibia and Nigeria started things off, with the Nigerians doing well early on to put on 55 for the opening wicket after opting to bat. Daniel Ayeku (16) and Adeleke Oyede (35) were watchful, but solid, and their partnership raised hopes of a competent total.

However, they encountered a slide, and as all of Christi Viljoen, Bernard Scholtz and Craig Williams claimed two wickets apiece, Nigeria were kept to 96/9. Namibia didn’t waste time in their chase, with Jean-Pierre Kotze and Nilko Davin putting on 47 for the opening wicket within five overs.

The two were dismissed in the next two overs, but the damage had been done, with Gerhard Erasmus scoring a 17-ball 32 to seal the victory.

At the Dubai International Stadium, there was a low-scoring encounter between Singapore and Jersey. Singapore were restricted to 112, with Julius Sumerauer taking 3/20, before Nick Greenwood’s 43-ball 46 helped power the chase.

Canada reigned over Kenya to ensure they won both their warm-up matches. They posted 191/8 after batting first at the ICC Global Cricket Academy, and then restricted Kenya to 165/8, with Jeremy Gordon returning 3/27.

Oman also made it two wins from as many warm-ups, seeing off the Netherlands by four wickets in Abu Dhabi after chasing down a 170-run target in 19.4 overs, thanks to opener Jatinder Singh’s 43-ball 64.

Under lights, Hong Kong held off Bermuda in Dubai, while in Abu Dhabi, hosts UAE got their second warm-up win against PNG.

An all-round Waqas Barkat, who backed up his 33 off 27 balls with 3/20 was the star for Hong Kong. Ahsan Abbasi (32) and Kinchit Shah (48 off 35) played useful hands in carrying the side to 160/5, before Shah's opening salvo and Barkat's strikes in the middle kept Bermuda to 136/8.

UAE overcame a measured start to post 50/2 in the Powerplay, and built from there. Nine sixes were struck in their 193/2, with Mohammad Usman accounting for two in his 38-ball 60 and Waheed Ahmed striking four in a cameo of 36* off 11 balls.

The PNG batsmen got starts, but with only Sese Bau reaching 40, they could go no further than 178/7, falling to a 15-run loss.

ICC World T20 Qualifier thread.

So the Qualifier begins tomorrow.

14 teams
6 go through
2 groups of 7.

Group winners automatically qualify and go through to the semis.

2nd and 3rd in each group play off vs one another. Winner qualifies and goes to semis to meet group winners.

Loser of these play offs then play against the 4th placed sides in each group, with the two winners claiming the final qualifying spots.

Scotland and Oman would be the favourites, the latter are seriously suited to this format and the former are a dynamic and powerful side.

To my pleasant surprise quite a lot of this is being broadcast. The following games are being shown live on Sky.

I think if people watch this they might be surprised at the quality of some sides on display. Ireland have a really exciting crop of youngsters, Scotland have some serious hitters, Oman focus almost exclusively on this format and have improved on the last WC, the Dutch have some serious players and so on. While some sides will be cannon fodder like Kenya and Nigeria, nearly every team in this competition has at least one cricketer who can take a game away from the opposition, so there will certainly be upsets along the way.

Just for those curious I'm gonna list a few players to watch of each team.

Ireland
David Delany. The first genuine pacer we've had in years. Will be my first look at him on a speedgun, apparently can bowl around 90mph
Gareth Delany. A leg spinning powerful batsman, David's cousin, has had some impressive knocks in his career and looks ideal for this format.
Harry Tector. He's 19 and already being earmarked for future captaincy honours, supremely talented young man.

Scotland
George Munsey. Very very explosive opener and on his day can mix it with the best.
Hamza Tahir. Promising young leggie.

Netherlands
Paul van Meekeren. Strong young pacer with county experience
Van Der Merwe, played for SA and again, lots of county experience
Ten Doeschate. No explanation needed here.

Singapore
Tim Davids. This guy has actually played in the Big Bash and hit some great knocks vs Zimbabwe and Nepal lately.

Oman
Khawar Ali is a very good leggie (even if i think he's chucking)
These guys also have a genuine pacer, I think his name is Bilal Ahmed? I'm not sure.
Zeeshan Maqsood is a big hitting opener too.

Jersey
Jonty Jenner. Was a substitute fielder for England in a Test to my memory and a good player.

Canada
Ravi Singh
Rizwan Cheema
Nikhil Dutta

Namibia
JP Kotze
Also a guy named Pikky Ya France, which is the greatest name in cricket history.

Bermuda
Dwayne Leverock (remember him?)'s nephew is an important player for these guys, as is former Sussez man Rawlins.

Hong Kong
Haroon Arshad showed a bit of skill in their lower order last week against Ireland and Netherlands.
Ehsan Khan is a decent spinner too.

Considering they've a population of about 60,000 they actually do quite well.

They regularly float between WCL Divisions 5 and 4 and have a couple of guys who've had county trials.

Obviously when they play against larger more established nations the gulf is wide but they did very respectably in 2015, defeating Nepal and a couple others.

Aside from Lamichhane and Khadka they have very poor players. That being said they were overconfident it seems in their regional qualifier and got knocked out by Singapore. Nepal actually lost to Qatar as well. Should've easily made this tournament.

ABU DHABI, UAE – The Ireland Men’s cricket team has begun its T20 World Cup Qualifier campaign with a thumping 8-wicket win over Hong Kong in Abu Dhabi today.

After losing the toss and bowling first, Ireland went out in 34-degree heat seeking a positive bowling performance to start their tournament. 22-year old leg-spinner Gareth Delany struck first removing opener Nizakat Khan for 1.

Kinchit Shah then came to the crease and proceeded to power to his highest T20I score of 79 from 54 balls. Shah played all around the ground, combatting the Irish bowling by shuffling around the crease and hitting through the line, especially against the pace bowlers.

The Hong Kong batters turned the strike over regularly, but couldn’t find a way to hit regular boundaries – thanks in large part to an Irish attack using change-up balls, and varying their pace and length well.

Mark Adair led the line taking 2-22 from four impressive overs, and was well supported by Boyd Rankin who bowled a miserly 0-18 from 4 overs. They were backed-up by the spinners Gareth Delany (1-23 from three overs) and George Dockrell 0-21 from three overs who applied the screws in the middle overs.

Hong Kong finished on 153-5 from their 20 overs, 20-25 runs short of par for this pitch.

In response, Ireland started with a blast – Paul Stirling smashing a six off the first ball – but lost Kevin O’Brien in the first over, run out without facing a ball.

Andy Balbirnie joined Stirling and the pair piled on the runs. Stirling was the chief aggressor, bringing up his 14th career T20I half-century from just 26 balls, while Balbirnie played a number of classical cricket shots and ticked over at a run-a-ball in support.

The two batsmen put on an 86-run stand from 60 balls, but on 62, Stirling miscued a drive and was caught.

However, the run onslaught did not abate, as Balbirnie and the incoming Harry Tector (21*) continued the run chase in style. Balbirnie passed the 50-mark as well – his fourth T20I half-century - and his 70* from 53 balls led Ireland to victory by eight wickets.

Player of the Match Paul Stirling said after the game:

“It’s nice to get a first win on the board, hopefully we can go on from here and keep winning. It was nice to get off to a quick start, you always feel like you’re in control of the innings when you get off to a quick start like that. It’s a very nice pitch, you always expect a good one at the start of a tournament when they’re fresh – especially in the afternoon when the sun comes out.”

Ireland captain Gary Wilson said:

“I don’t think we played our best cricket, to be honest. The pitch played a lot slower than we had hoped. We had to go to our cutters early, which we found to be effective. We’ve learned a lot, and we still have three more games to play in this stadium, so it’s great to win a game when we feel we haven’t played out best. A clinical chase from the boys, I thought Paul [Stirling] was excellent, and Andrew [Balbirnie] has been doing that for us for the last number of years. He’s probably not your belligerent T20 batter you’re used to seeing around the world, but his strike rate is right up there just from playing good cricket shots.”

“Boyd was outstanding, I think that should be the prototype bowling we’ll aim for. We spoke halfway through the innings that we were too full with the ball, but if you look at Boydy with the way his lengths were, I don’t think he went for a boundary in his four overs, and that should be the prototype for the lengths of our balls going forward.”

“We look to our next game against the UAE, if we play our best cricket then we’ll be OK. If we aren’t at our best, then these other teams are good enough to beat us. It’s a case of a thinking a game at a time, if you look too far ahead in these tournaments you can come unstuck.”

ABU DHABI, UAE – The Ireland Men’s cricket team has been beaten by tournament hosts United Arab Emirates in today’s Group Stage match at the T20 World Cup Qualifier in Abu Dhabi today.

After losing the toss and being sent in, openers Paul Stirling and Kevin O’Brien looked to hit out early on what was a harder batting wicket than yesterday. After hitting two boundaries, O’Brien (14) fell to a diving catch at mid-wicket by Ashfaq Ahmed, bringing the in-form Andy Balbirnie to the crease.

Stirling and Balbirnie looked to back up their 86-run stand yesterday with another performance here, however on this occasion they could only muster 29 between them. Balbirnie was again looking confident until he fell to a neat catch for 11. Two further wickets fell as the batting became difficult in no small part thanks to tight spin bowling deployed by the home side, and suddenly Ireland was precariously poised at 68-4.

Stirling needed a partner to stay with him, and Mark Adair seemed the man. The pair put on a patient 52-run stand, which was more a partnership of turning the strike over than striking boundaries.

Stirling brought up his 15th career half-century off 47 balls, and was looking to bat the innings out. However, after getting to 72 from 58 balls, Stirling was called through by Adair for a tight second run and was caught just short. Stirling is now ranked fifth in the world for batters who have scored the most half-centuries in T20I cricket, and he has scored seven half-centuries this year alone from just 14 innings.

Stirling’s dismissal was the beginning of an end-of-innings collapse that saw an incredible 6 wickets fall in the last 9 balls, with Ireland finishing all out for 125.

For the UAE, Rohan Mustafa bowled an excellent 4-18 from his four overs, the former UAE captain’s best bowling figures in T20Is.

In response, the UAE made run scoring look easy, blasting 32 runs from the first two overs. Rohan Mustafa (39 from 16 balls) was the early destroyer, until his stay was cut short, beaten for pace by David Delany and has his stumps rattled.

The run rate continued to tick over at 9 runs an over, with Ireland’s captain Gary Wilson rotating his bowlers to try make the breakthrough. Boyd Rankin slanted one across the left-handed Mohammad Usman (29) and had him caught behind, and Harry Tector created two late run outs through great fielding at point in the latter overs, but in the end the Irish total proved too low to defend and the UAE ran out winners by five wickets.

After the game Ireland captain Gary Wilson said:

“We felt batting was difficult. Paul [Stirling] is one of the best ball strikers in world cricket and he was telling us it was difficult going. But obviously when Rohan [Mustafa] comes out and plays like that it kills the game. I thought we bowled relatively well after that, but as I said, I thought he killed the game by getting UAE off to a great start.”

“I thought the UAE bowled very well, they knew the conditions well, which certainly helped them, but hopefully we’ll come back strong in a couple of days against Oman. Of course there are areas of our game that need to be better, but credit must go firstly to the UAE boys for the way they played.”

Yeah I can't believe their playing this Rodrigues guy who has a SR of 65 in T20s ahead of Cheema. Also, I do agree that the fact that it's crazy they weren't playing a guy who had a T20 hundred and SR of 181, mind boggling stuff.

Rodrigo is a beast. He killed every bowler in Gt20. I have played against every Canadian player, omg this Rodrigues is some talent. I would like Cheema to open with him.
 
ABU DHABI, UAE – The Ireland Men’s cricket team has comprehensively defeated Oman, after Gareth Delany starred with bat and ball in Abu Dhabi today.

Under warm conditions, Ireland lost the toss and was sent in to bat – a decision that the Omani’s would rue. The Irish team had arrived at the ground bearing bad news, that in-form batter Andy Balbirnie had succumbed to an illness and ruled out of the game, but that would not hamper the men in green.

Ireland’s top order batters were in a positive mood, looking to make amends for the last match loss to UAE on Saturday. Paul Stirling (11) and Kevin O’Brien (41) started out by putting on 34 for the first wicket from just over four overs. During the partnership O’Brien hit a massive six over mid-wicket early, which broke a world-record for the most sixes hit by a batsman in T20 International cricket in a calendar year (35 to date), and despite losing Paul Stirling soon after for 11, Ireland’s run rate did not abate.

22-year old Gareth Delany, in only his 12th T20 International since making his debut in July, smashed 89* from 49 balls, including 9 fours and 3 sixes. His innings was Ireland’s third highest individual score in T20 internationals, with the five highest individual T20 international scores now all coming in 2019.

Losing his partner O’Brien with the score on 76 in the 10th over, Delany was joined by 19-year old Harry Tector and the run rate accelerated further. Tector hit two sixes and a boundary in his innings of 28, with he and Delany sharing a quickfire 43-run stand.

Tector dismissal saw Mark Adair come to the crease, but the usually big-hitting Adair took on the support role and let Delany continue to pummel the Omani attack. The pair put on 64 runs in the last five overs, with Adair contributing 11 of those. Delany was in the zone - at one stage took 33 runs from 11 balls.

Ireland finished its 20 overs with 183-3, setting the Oman side a challenging target on a slowly wearing pitch.

In response, Oman were never really in the running. Despite some big hitting by opener Khawar Ali (50 from 34 balls), the Omani batters couldn’t keep pace with a steadily increasing run rate required. The Irish bowlers took wickets at regular intervals, not letting their opponents build a threatening partnership. Gareth Delany completed his ‘on-song’ day by claiming 2-29 from four overs, including the wicket of Ali.

Mark Adair again bowled well taking 2-24, and George Dockrell chimed in with 2-24. While only claiming a single scalp, the pace and bounce of Boyd Rankin was difficult for Oman to handle, and he ended with 1-20 from his four overs.

Oman finished on 148-9, with Ireland winning by 35 runs.

amza Tariq of Canada has received an official warning and one demerit point after being found guilty of a Level 1 breach of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel during the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Qualifier 2019 Group B match against Jersey in Abu Dhabi on Sunday.
Tariq was found to have violated Article 2.5 of the Code, which relates to “using language, actions or gestures which disparage or which could provoke an aggressive reaction from a batter upon his/her dismissal during an international match”.

The incident happened in the seventh over of Jersey’s innings, when wicketkeeper Tariq abused dismissed batsman Nick Greenwood, which, in the view of the on-field umpires, could have provoked a reaction from the Jersey player.

After the match, Tariq admitted the offence and accepted the sanction proposed by Jeff Crowe of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees and, as such, there was no need for a formal hearing.

The charge was levelled by on-field umpires Lyndon Hannibal and Rashid Riaz, and reserve umpire Sam Nogajski.

Level 1 breaches carry a minimum penalty of an official reprimand, a maximum penalty of 50 per cent of a player’s match fee, and one or two demerit points.

NOTES TO EDITORS

When a player reaches four or more demerit points within a 24-month period, they are converted into suspension points and a player is banned

Two suspension points equate to a ban from one Test or two ODIs or two T20Is, whatever comes first for the player

Gotta say that Gordon bowler for Canada impressed me with his pace. Clocked 143kph.

Their batting though, oh boy. Barely went at a run a ball for 17 overs against Nigeria aint a great sign. I'm stunned Cheema aint playing. I remember him being a bit of a hack in 2011 but still a big hitter. Surely he'd be in.
 
So Group B now is almost certainly going to be determined by NRR since the Top 3 sides have all played the same teams, namely Ireland/Oman/UAE/Hong Kong.

So the top spot and ergo the first automatic qualifying slot for the t20 WC will be decided based off of who can hammer Jersey/Nigeria by the largest margins. unless Canada can upset someone.

Nigeria game in particular is huge. Toss could decide bat. You'd feel bowling first you could keep them to 80 or less and chase it in 9 or less, which would be a massive NRR spike.

This has been a fantastic tournament so far. Every day has had some good games and shock upsets.

Scotland I have no idea whats going on there got battered by Namibia. Tournament favourites before and now had PNG got 4 more runs the day before they'd be staring elimination in the face. Even as is will need to beat the Dutch to avoid 4th spot and a do or die game.

Jersey, with a population of 100 thousand, stunned a UAE side who'd done well up to now. Massive shock.

Shame most of the televised games have been fairly one sided. Knock outs promise to be crackers. Both groups wide open.
 
The only team that I hope qualify for the WC are PNG and maybe Namibia as both missed the qualification to last WC by a narrow margin.

I have captained Jeremy Gordon and man this guy is so quick, yet so gentle. One game, this old uncle didn’t wear a helmet but this didn’t bowl a single bouncer to anyone in the whole game as he didn’t want to hurt someone who is not good.

Abrash Khan shouldn’t be in the team. Cheema and Rodrigo should open batting, followed by Dhaliwal, Ravindrapal and N Kumar. Heylinger, our bowler can hit MASSIVE

ABU DHABI, UAE – The Ireland Men’s cricket team has been defeated by Canada in their fourth Group Stage match of the ICC T20 World Cup Qualifier tournament in Abu Dhabi today, with automatic qualification for the World Cup now relying on winning the final Group matches and hoping for favourable results elsewhere.

With Andy Balbirnie returning to the side after missing the last game through illness, Ireland lost the toss and were asked to bowl first.

Canada started well, until speedster David Delany (1-31) knocked back opener Rizwan Cheema’s stumps with his first ball. Delany, despite the sapping heat, was clocked at more than 90 miles per hour during his spell today, and made the opposition batters uncomfortable at times with his raw pace.

Navneet Dhaliwal (69 from 51 balls), the Canadian captain, then took charge – hitting out with a combination of power shots and well-placed glides. He brought up his third career half-century from 37 balls, sharing an impressive 111-run stand with Nitish Kumar (53). While giving his team a great launch pad for the final overs - with the score on 124-2 with 5 overs to go, his dismissal gave Irish bowlers a sniff of a way back into the game. And the men in green capitalised.

The last five overs saw four wickets fall for just 32 runs, with Canada ending on 156-5 from their 20 overs.

For Ireland, Boyd Rankin bowled well claiming 2-31, but the best bowling performance of the day was Mark Adair, who went wicketless but bowled a miserly 0-21 from four overs. Using clever variation and a tight line, Adair bowled at the top and tail of the innings and ensured the Canadian batters never got away.

In response, Ireland started poorly by losing Kevin O’Brien early for four, but looked to rectify the innings through a rapid 38-run stand between Paul Stirling and Gareth Delany (16).

The dismissal of Delany, run out after great fielding by Nitish Kumar at backward point, was quickly followed by the big loss of Balbirnie for a first ball duck. Ireland needed talisman Paul Stirling to stay in and build around, but soon after he tickled a ball through to the keeper and was out for 23.

A seemingly stabilising partnership of 29 between Harry Tector (22) and Gary Wilson (16) sought to get the Irish run chase back on track, however, the Canadian bowlers continued to plug away and wickets further came. Tector and Wilson fell within two runs of each other, and the brakes were applied to the Irish run rate. Mark Adair (12), Stuart Thompson (28*) and George Dockrell (13*) found late runs, but the target proved too difficult and Ireland fell 10 runs short.

The win leaves Ireland in fourth place in the Group B table with two games to play. Automatic qualification for the World Cup will now take two convincing wins and results going favourably elsewhere.

After the match, captain Gary Wilson said:

“They got a few more than we would have liked with the bat, but credit to the two boys who put on the runs, I thought they played well. At half-time they were probably 10 runs or so more than we would have liked, but we still felt we could chase them down. But as we saw, it can be difficult to chase when teams put the squeeze on.”

“We thought we wanted to target the powerplay and put Gareth Delany up to three. But the run out, followed by Andrew Balbirnie going first ball put the brakes on us a little bit. We recovered ok, but when Harry [Tector] got out, we never really recovered from that.”

“I thought Mark Adair was outstanding with the ball, helping to drag it back – as he has been all tournament, but ee’ve unfortunately now got to go the hard way and rely on results elsewhere. They’re all must win games for us now.”

“We just need to get a bit better in every department. We weren’t able to chase down 150-odd today, on any ground on any wicket we should be able to do that, but we just need to look at every department and get 10% better.”

True. I was thinking of that also. The rugby WC format is probably the best-suited format for the cricket world cups
 
PNG look like a really good and promising team. Even better is the country and people from PNG seem to have an interest in cricket since most, if not all the PNG players are from/ born and lived in PNG unlike UAE, Canada, Oman, Hong Kong and Singapore, where the whole team is full of subcontinent immigrants. The other teams also look very promising too. And Honestly Scotland, Netherlands, Ireland (and Zimbabwe) should all have been top teams by now (at least same level as Sri Lanka) with test status too.

This tournament has had some surprising results.
 
Selladore Kumar of Singapore, Tom Sole of Scotland and Abiodun Abioye of Nigeria have been suspended from bowling in international cricket with immediate effect after the Event Panel of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Qualifier 2019 confirmed that they use illegal actions. The Event Panel comprised members of the ICC Panel of Human Movement Specialists.

Kumar was reported by match officials during Singapore’s match against Scotland on 18 October, Sole in Scotland’s match against Kenya on 19 October and Abioye during Nigeria’s match against Canada on 21 October.

Video footage of the players bowling in the event was shared with the Event Panel for review.

The Event Panel concluded that all three bowlers employ illegal bowling actions and as such, in accordance with Article 6.7 of the regulations, they are immediately suspended from bowling in international cricket.

The suspensions shall remain in place until such time the players submit to an assessment of their bowling actions at an ICC approved Testing Centre and the assessment concludes that their bowling actions are legal.

ABU DHABI, UAE – The Ireland Men’s cricket team has bounced back to form with a convincing win over Jersey in their penultimate Group Stage match of the ICC T20 World Cup Qualifier tournament in Abu Dhabi today.

Smarting after the loss to Canada on Wednesday, Head Coach Graham Ford was looking for an improved bowling effort in today’s match after making one change to the line-up with Craig Young coming in for Stuart Thompson.

After winning the toss and choosing to bowl first it took just four balls to show the Irish side was back in business. Mark Adair, who has bowled impressively throughout the tournament, struck in the first over removing Jersey opener Harrison Carlyon without scoring.

The express pace of David Delany accounted for the next wicket, ripping through Nick Greenwood’s defence and upsetting the stumps, and this signalled a collapse from the Jersey batters. In all they lost 9-69 in 15 overs to be all out off the last ball for 105.

After having an off day with the ball on Wednesday, the Ireland bowlers were on song today, led by Player of the Match Adair (3-10 from 4 overs), two wickets to David Delany, and one wicket apiece to Boyd Rankin, Gareth Delany, Craig Young and George Dockrell. Rankin’s wicket, a sensational reflex caught and bowled, was his 50th wicket in T20I cricket in this his 45th T20I appearance.

The main concern for Ireland though is the injury to paceman David Delany who left the field limping after not being able to complete his 3rd over.

Chasing 106 for victory, the Ireland batters were in no mood to let Jersey in with a sniff. Paul Stirling struck 58* from 37 balls to lead the response (including 5 fours and 2 sixes), while Andy Balbirnie was getting back to his best form making 33 from 27 balls.

While today Kevin O’Brien only made 11, he did pass 2,000 T20 runs for Ireland in the process with only Stirling and William Porterfield ahead of him on the all-time Irish records.

To ensure domination of the match and give Ireland a big boost in the Net Run Rate column, Stirling finished the run chase off by lifting Jersey’s Dominic Blampied for consecutive sixes.

The win leaves Ireland in third place (on Net Run Rate) in the Group B table with one game to play. The slim hopes of automatic qualification for the World Cup will now take a convincing win against Nigeria and results going favourably elsewhere. If not topping the Group and achieving automatic qualification, Ireland will enter the sudden death knock-out phase early next week.

After the match, Gary Wilson said:

“It was obviously very important to bounce back strong, if we didn’t we may have been out of the competition. So it was pleasing to get a win today and hopefully we can take the momentum into tomorrow and move on from there.”

“Crucial tomorrow will be run rate, which will be important, but first we have to win the game. Nigeria are a bit of an unknown quantity for us, so we’ll have a look at the footage from the previous games and look to tackle them the best way possible. We’ve played some good cricket today, so hopefully we can continue that into tomorrow.”

ABU DHABI, UAE – The Ireland Men’s cricket team has thumped Nigeria by X wickets in their final Group Stage match of the ICC T20 World Cup Qualifier tournament in Abu Dhabi today, moving to the top spot in Group B and will nervously await tomorrow’s match between Jersey and Oman tomorrow to see who qualifies automatically for the World Cup.

With the loss of David Delany due to a torn meniscus knee injury, Stuart Thompson returned to the side for this first-ever international cricket match between the two sides.

After losing the toss and being asked to bowl first it didn’t take long for the men in green to assert their dominance. Leg-spinner Gareth Delany struck first, cleaning up opener Daniel Ajeku who tried to go back and cut a ball too close to his stumps and was beaten in flight.

Two further wickets fell soon after, and the Nigerians found themselves struggling at 13-3 after 5 overs. From that point the African side never recovered, with the Irish bowlers bowling a consistent line and length on a sluggish looking pitch. Nigeria finished on 66-9 from their 20 overs – equal to the lowest completed T20I total by a side not being bowled out.

For Ireland, Craig Young claimed career-best figures of 4-13 from his four overs, and Mark Adair went top of the tournament wicket-taking chart with 2-10 from his four overs. Demonstrating their tight bowling, five wickets to fall were bowled, with Head Coach Graham Ford pleased that his side didn’t let the pressure off throughout the full 20 overs.

With the state of the Group B table, at the halfway stage Ireland’s batters knew they had to knock off the target in 9 overs to go top of the Group. And they achieved their target off just 37 balls.

Paul Stirling (11) fell early, and Kevin O’Brien (32) lost his wicket late on, but Gareth Delany (11 off 8 balls) and Mark Adair (10 off 4 balls) saw their side home at a rapid rate.

As a notable aside, Paul Stirling (694 runs) and Kevin O’Brien (690 runs) now sit in first and second place in the records for most runs in a calendar year in T20I cricket worldwide.

The circumstances of the match means that Ireland leaps into first place in the Group B table requiring Jersey to upset Oman tomorrow in order to claim automatic qualification for the World Cup. If Oman win tomorrow, Ireland will go into a play-off against the third placed side from Group A – which is currently Scotland.

After the match, Gary Wilson said:

“We’re top at the moment and will keep a close on eye on the game tomorrow. All we could do is do our job as best we could today and it was a clinical performance. Credit must go to Nigeria – it’s great to see teams like Nigeria here competing at this level, it can only be a positive thing for the globalisation of cricket around the world.”

“We want to be playing our best cricket towards the end of the tournament, and we probably haven’t been at our best yet, but some positive performances over the last couple of days and we’ll look to take that into the next match.”

“David Delany has a bit of an issue with his knee, we’re not quite sure how bad yet, but we’ll monitor that pretty closely over the next 24 hours.”

After the match, Player of the Match Craig Young said about his career-best figures of 4-13:

“It’s important when someone comes into the team they make the most of it – it’s not always easy, but something you have to do.”

“It’s nice to put in a meaningful performance, it’s credit to how strong the team is now – we have plenty of bowling options and that’s a great thing going forward.”

PNG should be able to directly qualify for the tournament.... All they have to do is beat Kenya in the last game.. They have NRR in their favour.
 
Not a single unbeaten side in the tournament shows how far the mid tier Associate sides have developed. With some having t20 leagues like Canada and others targeting t20 cricket almost exclusively its quite obvious the gap is lessening and that virtually every side in this tournament has a handful of players who can turn games. Thats why we're seeing so many upsets. Hell even Bermuda have Rawlins who got picked for the Hundred. Teams here are developing the skillsets needed for the format with more bowling variation and more intelligent batting.

Oman almost certain to top Group B barring a spectacular screw up.
PNG similar but how they deal with pressure will be interesting. They failed to qualify from a similar situation in 2015, losing to the USA.

Scotland almost certainly going to end in 4th.

Assuming results are as you expect the knock outs should be as follows.

Ireland vs Namibia
Canada vs Netherlands.

Loser of Ire/Nam vs UAE.
Loser of Can/Net vs Scotland.

Oman and PNG auto qualify.
 
The Netherlands need to complete their chase in 12.3 overs to qualify

Papua New Guinea have secured their place in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2020 in Australia next year – the first time they will feature in a World Cup in any format.

PNG first defeated Kenya by 45 runs in a thrilling morning match on Sunday, 27 October, and the failure of Netherlands to then beat Scotland in 12.3 overs of their chase meant PNG could book their tickets to the premier event Down Under next year.

The scenes at the Dubai International Stadium at the 12.3-over mark of the Netherlands-Scotland clash – watched eagerly by the whole PNG side in the stands – was one of unbridled joy. It’ll be their first major ICC tournament.

Having headed into the final day of the group stages of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Qualifier 2019 as favourites – they were top of Group A with a superior net run-rate to second-placed Netherlands – PNG nearly made a mess of things against Kenya.

They were reduced to 19/6 within four overs, and at the time, it seemed they had blown their opportunity to secure automatic qualification. However, led by Norman Vanua’s fighting 48-ball 54, PNG recovered to post 118 in 19.3 overs.

Then, it was up to the bowlers. Kenya had Irfan Karim scoring a 22-ball 29, and that meant they were 40/1 after the Powerplay. However, the slide began. There were only two more scores that reached double digits: Collins Obuya made a 19-ball 10, and Aman Gandhi fought to a 25-ball 14*.

Assad Vala returned a brilliant 3/7, and Nosaina Pokana provided superb support with his 3/21. Kenya were bundled out for 73 in 18.4 overs, and having done their bit, the PNG players waited in anticipation for the Netherlands result.

The Dutch won by four wickets, but it wasn’t sufficient on the day. They will have to go through the play-offs to reach Australia. As for PNG, they can already plan their itinerary.
