A 6'5, huge bowling all-rounder, Rakheem Cornwall scored an impressive half century and bowled an economical, one-wicket spell against England, in the on-going tour match. I've always wondered what a truly giant batsman could accomplish in cricket and Cornwall just might answer my query.

The upcoming West Indies vs Pakistan will truly be a battle of giants when the seven-foot Irfan takes on the 150 kg, Cornwall.

Lol at his belly. Must be a nightmare to bat with him though, the running would be comical.

Looks impressive. Well built. I am looking forward of watching the highlights.

Is he a spinner or fast bowler?

Spinner. Got Moeen Ali's wicket in the tour match.

The WICB need to get their act together and draft him into the side. His weight doesn't matter if he has the talent and is in form. :inzi

Yeah he's been around for a while including on various A team tours.

Its his bowling (as well as his girth) that stands out, but then against just about every spinner who can roll their arm over in the Caribbean gets wickets due to the nature of the pitches.

Wait he hasn't made it to the West Indies side?

Not yet. He's almost there though but the WICB is being all stuck up and asking him to reduce his weight.

No they should let him play. If he can hit big sixes there is no need to worry about running between the wickets. Chris Gayle made a career out of this sort of play.

Can't wait for Bumble's commentary when this guy plays :))

Russell Dwayne Mark Leverock

This guy could field like Ponting

He is the future of West Indies cricket - believe it or not.

I'm going to get a lot criticism for saying this but fitness is overrated in cricket when it comes to performing your primary role. If Cornwall was to be a fast bowler, then his fitness is terrible but for a batsman who is there to hit sixes, fours and completely dominate the opposition, his physique would actually benefit him, just the way it did for Sharjeel because this fat adds lethargy but also MUSCLE.

No wonder why Pehlwaans are the ones winning battles instead of overrated, fit boxers with abs and what not.

From little I watched of him, seems a very good cricketer.

I think we may hear more from him in the coming years.

Go Rahkeem Cornwall.

I have also wondered what a 'huge' batsman might be able to achieve in cricket but I was thinking along the lines of someone like a weightlifter such as 'The Mountain'.

Looked quite mediocre vs England. The only shots he played were straight down the ground which barely made it to the boundary, one was even dropped and was caught out in the same area as well.

Will feature in the tour match between West Indies President's XI and Pakistan in Trelawny.

He has problems with his weight but it gives him a lot of power. He will be prolific for the Windies.

has decent numbers across the domestic game but seems pretty new to the sport. To be 24 and only play such a limited number of games seems odd. Was he picked up late? Was he playing a lot of b side cricket? What was going on? Oh and to be so young and to look so out of shape is a problem. I don't think he is THAT good a talent but then again, I havent actually seen him play so who knows.

You realize this is cricket not the NFL?
How dare a cricket board set standards on athleticism, weight, certain degree of fitness?

Selected in the 13 man squad for the Test series against India!

How does he get selected with that kind of fitness? I can't see him succeed consistently unless he improves fitness.

I think he should have got selected for t20s when it happen rather than test don't think he has fitness for it but that being said I wish him good luck

Man means business I tell ya

Sideshow player. At best will end up like Samit Patel and have a distinguished domestic career.

With this excess weight he will never be worth picking in any intl match.

Even if we put that aside, he is basically an fingerspinner who can whack a few.
Fabian Allen can do that job and add more value in LOI team and Roston chase is miles away a better batsman and bowls 2nd spinner level quality offspin

Right let's see what the fuss is about as this guy's been linked to the West Indies squad for ages.

Weight most definitely increases raw strength. Or are you saying that Daniel 'DC' Cormier is not as strong as Cristiano Ronaldo?

Cormier is in a sport where bodyweight even if fat can be used as an advantage. In cricket, having extra bodyfat does not give you an advantage in any way, shape or form. It's not a contact sport.

However, Rahkeem is a big dude naturally so even if he were to lose his bodyfat, his "power" would not diminish because he has a solid structure underneath.

The extra weight gives him his power so even his mistimed slogs can clear the boundary, similar to other power players like Gayle. That being said, he would definitely be better off if he lost some weight.

Did I not clarify that I was not talking about weight but precisely weight of bodyfat. Fat does not generate power, in cricket anyway.

Very talented cricketer. Hope his body which he has plenty of, holds up to the workload of international cricket.

He's impressive player and has performed in domestic. But will his big size be a problem for him international cricket? We'll see

Bit Like Azam Khan?
Weight wise they might be close, but.

He has ticked the most boxes. Only thing left for him to do is to replicate the domestic performances in International Cricket.

Where as Azam still has to book a place in XI in domestic and/or PSL.

Uncapped spin-bowling allrounder Rahkeem Cornwall was named by West Indies in their squad for the two-Test series at home versus India later this month.

The 26-year-old, who weighs 140kg, earned his maiden call-up to a senior West Indies sidelast week. Cornwall has claimed 260 wickets in 55 first-class games at 23.90 apiece and scored 2,224 runs at 24.43.

Cricket West Indies (CWI) president Ricky Skerritt has defended the regional selection committee’s decision to hand Cornwall a Test call and says that the uncapped allrounder will lose weight.

“Rahkeem has been under the supervision of CWI-appointed strength and conditioning trainer, nutritionist and coach. He is being managed with a concentrated plan wherein he will gradually lose weight and improve upon his fitness,” Skerritt was quoted as saying by Mid-Day. “He has been the most successful spinner in our first-class league and has earned his selection by taking many wickets at an economical rate.”

Cornwall’s call-up to West Indies’ Test squad came after impressive performances in domestic tournaments.

When the squad was announced last week, Robert Haynes, the interim head of West Indies’ selection panel, hailed the heavy-set player’s skills.

“Rahkeem has been performing consistently over a long period of time and has proven to be a match-winner, so we believe his elevation to the Test squad is merited at this time,” said Haynes. “We believe he can provide an attacking option to our bowling attack with his sharp turn and extra bounce. He can also lend a bit of depth to the batting, so we are looking forward to him coming into the squad and making a valuable contribution.”

The first Test between India and West Indies starts on on Cornwall’s home island of Antigua from August 22. The second is in Jamaica from August 30.

Spin bowling all-rounder Rahkeem Cornwall, who received his maiden call-up to the West Indies Test squad for the India series, believes his consistency makes him well suited for the longer format.

Cornwall, 26, who has been playing first-class cricket since 2014, has scored 2224 runs and taken 260 wickets in 55 games. He was impressive in the unofficial Test series against India A and scored two half-centuries in the first two games. He also took four wickets in the first match.

Cornwall's consistent performances did not go unnoticed and the West Indies selection panel was only happy to add him to the Test squad as a back-up to Roston Chase and to equip the team with a lower-order batting option.

"Rahkeem has been performing consistently over a long period of time and has proven to be a match-winner, so we believe his elevation to the Test squad is merited at this time,” Robert Haynes, the head of West Indies' interim selection panel, had said.

The 6'6'' bowler expressed delight at his call-up and now wants to prove himself if he gets a chance to play in the first Test, which begins on 22 August. "The feeling [on getting called up] is great – it’s something I’ve been pushing to achieve for a long time. The feeling would be great if I was picked in the first Test. I just would want to go out and perform and don’t disappoint my friends and family," Cornwall said in an interview on the Cricket West Indies website.

Cornwall clinched 19 wickets at an average of 18.42 against England Lions Cornwall clinched 19 wickets at an average of 18.42 against England Lions
"I believe the Test format suits my game because of the consistency a player needs over a long period of time to be successful, and I’ve enjoyed that challenge so far in my career playing first-class cricket."

In 2018, Cornwall picked up 54 wickets in nine matches at an average of 17.68. His top performance that year came against the England Lions while playing for the West Indies A team, where he clinched 19 wickets at an average of 18.42 and was instrumental in their 3-0 win over the tourists. He was equally good in the one-day matches against India A last month and claimed nine wickets in six games.

“The A team preparation has been very good,” he said. "England Lions and India A were two quality opposition teams featuring guys that played Test cricket. Overall it has been very challenging and it was a good place to test skills that I’ve been trying to perfect every year in our domestic competition.

"I’ve been putting in a lot of work over the last couple of months. I’ve always pushed myself. I feel I can go on and I think the on field results I’ve achieved have shown the progress I’m making."

I don't think I have ever seen a fatter cricket player than him in my whole life. How can he get selected with such fitness?

He’s bowled 27 overs today. 1/3 of the entire innings.... Let’s see how he performs tomorrow

An even day, the bowlers put in the hard yards: Rahkeem Cornwall

West Indies allrounder Rahkeem Cornwall made his debut on Friday and it took him just 17 deliveries to get his first Test wicket and that too of India stalwart Cheteshwar Pujara. The offspinner bowled it short, extracted bounce off the surface forcing Pujara to rock back and end up chipping the ball into the hands of point to be caught for 6.

The celebrations weren’t exaggerated. They were subdued considering the hype built around him because of his frame and the 140 kg cult figure didn’t disappoint.

Before he could impress the star-studded India batting line-up with his spinning deliveries, Cornwall had already made his contribution when he accepted the catch of opener KL Rahul in the first slip in the seventh over. He took one more, again of the bowling of his captain Jason Holder and that too of Mayank Agarwal who had scored a fighting half-century.

“Good feeling to get him (Pujara) as my first Test wicket,” Cornwall said after the day’s play. “It was nothing really new to me but it was a good feeling. It was a good feeling making my debut. I think the ball was coming on to the bat well. Now we have to work hard and put the ball in the right areas. It was an even day, the bowlers put in the hard yards.”

Cornwall bowled 27 of the 90 overs West Indies bowled during the opening day of the second Test in Kingston as India fought back to be at 264/5 when the play ended. Cornwall’s figures were an impressive 1/69, shouldering the bulk of bowling duties. “It all depends on the pitch, depends on what it is giving me. I just assess the conditions and decide how we can go from there,” he explained his approach.

longside the pacers, he kept the Indian batsmen under control who had started in an aggressive fashion. While the honours were shared, the 26-year-old Cornwall said one more wicket would have put West Indies in a strong position.

“One (more) wicket would be comfortable but I think we are in a good position. When we come back tomorrow, I think we just have to take the next wickets and move forward,” Cornwall said.

Rahkeem Cornwall currently has a 6-fer in a test match against Afghanistan!

6-58

Ends up on 7/75 in 25.3 overs vs AFG in Only Test

Rahkeem Cornwall today became the first West Indian spinner to claim a ten wicket haul in a Test match in the subcontinent - took 3/41 in 2nd innings

Wow I didn't know that. Bishoo wasn't able to do that?

Think he gets a lot of overspin on the ball and consequently , gets a lot of dip from a great height . Kohli was consistently misjudging the length he bowled when we toured.

He’s certainly a very large chap, so I’m not sure if he is a longer term prospect for Test cricket, but he seems to be doing a good job today so far. Very accurate bowling and an extremely dexterous one-handed slip catch.

How does he pass fitness test? He has to be the most unfit cricketer in the world (among Test nations) currently.

He's a proper unit this Rakeem, never again will we see the likes of him. We must cherish him while he's still playing the game.

That was an atrocious drop. But it doesn't matter as Gabriel takes the fielders out of it with a beauty clean bowled.
