Fantastic. This is a great move and will create great optics about Azaad Kashmir, while at the same time elucidate the contrast with regards to what is going on across the border.

Across the border they inaugurated KPL eight or nine years ago, there are quite a few premier leagues recognized by JK cricket association.

I think the league should be called Jammu Premier League or Poonch Premier League. Kashmir Premier League is kind of misleading as there are no teams from the valley of Kashmir. That said, it is a good initiative.

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan's lawmaker and chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Kashmir, Shehryar Khan Afridi, launched Azad Jammu and Kashmir's first cricket tournament on Saturday, vowing that the initiative would help "raise voices of the people" from the disputed region to the rest of the world.

The Kashmir Premier League (KPL) will be played in the T20 format by six teams – the Rawalakot Hawks, Kotli Panthers, Mirpur Royals, Muzaffarabad Tigers, Overseas Warriors and the Bagh Stallions.

“The KPL will put Kashmir on the World Sports Map. We will raise Kashmir on all forums world over. Kashmir Committee would do everything to preserve, project and promote Kashmiri identity and its culture. ‘K’ word is the buzz word now,” Shehryar said in a statement.

He was joined by President Azad Jammu and Kashmir Sardar Masood Khan and cricket icon Shahid Afridi, KPL's brand ambassador, for the inaugural event on Saturday.

Shehryar said that the KPL had been approved by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and the federal government and is scheduled to begin in 2021.

A majority of the matches will be held in Azad Kashmir in Muzaffarabad, in addition to Mirpur and Rawalpindi, according to the statement.

“The talent of Kashmiri youth will reach the world through this league. The youth of Kashmir have to show the world how much talent it possessed,” it added.

In a separate statement released, on Saturday, President Khan said that the KPL "would play an important role" in bringing AJK's youth into mainstream Pakistani cricket.

"This league is a powerful platform that will help promote Azad Kashmir, the local talent and also portray the true image of peace and prosperity witnessed in AJK," he said.

Nuclear-armed India and Pakistan have twice gone to war over Kashmir since gaining independence from Britain in 1947.

Both Delhi and Islamabad claim Kashmir in full, but control only parts of it - territories recognised internationally as "Indian-administered Kashmir" and "Pakistan-administered Kashmir"

Yes that league was inaugurated by my mohalla president and sponsored by the milkman. Great initiative compared to this one inaugurated by the Afridis.

Yeah i was comparing both leagues, only those people who can't digest facts comes up with silly replies like this.

Pretty sure an Indian cricket league inaugurated by Indian mohalla president and sponsored by a milkman will have a lot more upside in terms of structure, revenue and credibility than most world cricket leagues though. That’s not a bad thing. Anyway Kashmir (India side) cricket seems to be improving too with Irfan Pathan acting as a mentor. We saw Samad recently and Dar (the medium pace bowler) a couple of years back who played for Mi and plenty of exciting talent.

ISLAMABAD (APP) – Kashmir Premier League and Muslim Hands Pakistan (MHP) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for a players’ development programme in Azad Jammu and Kashmir.

“We understand that health and education are very important sectors but along with that, you can’t ignore the sports’ sector. Actually, these three [sectors] are interlinked,” President of KPL Arif Malik said at the MoU signing ceremony here.

“It has been decided to pick up five players from each district. We’ll support these players and provide them the best training,” he added.

According to Arif players from AJK would get an opportunity to play with senior players, which would help them learn and improve their skills.

Syed Javed Gilani of MHP said that the use of modern techniques and methodology was necessary to polish the talent of players. “Our goal is to bring in new talent to the fore.

We’ll help KPL in its efforts to provide opportunities to the potential AJK players.”

Former Pakistan all-rounder Azhar Ali, who had been tasked to identify talented players said: “We will try to hold trials in a transparent manner.

There will be no favouritism and the selection will be made purely on merit.”

Commenting on Pakistan’s 2-0 loss to New Zealand in the Test series, he said the Kiwis were a tough side in their home condition. However, he said Pakistan coaches needed the vision to enable players to perform in all conditions.

“Pakistan has highly talented players. They’ve great skills but the selection of players should always be right to achieve the desired results.

“The absence of Babar Azam is also one of the reasons of Pakistan team’s defeat in the series,” he added.

The representative Kotli Panthers Malik Naveed on the occasion thanked the KPL management for coming up with the idea of holding the event.

“It is a commendable initiative, especially when it comes to bringing in players from the rural areas,” he added.

He expressed the optimism that in future Pakistan would also get talent from KPL.

The first edition of KPL is scheduled to be held from April 1-10, 2021. Sanctioned by Pakistan Cricket Board and to be played on T-20 format the league will see six outfits clashing for the top honours.

The teams include Muzaffarabad Tigers, Mirpur Royals, Kotli Panthers, Rawalakot Hawks, Bagh Stallions and Overseas Warriors.

ISLAMABAD, Mar 11 (APP):The players’ draft for the inaugural edition of Kashmir Premier League (KPL) is likely to take place in the first week of April at a local hotel here, the top KPL official said on Thursday.

“The draft pick was initially planned for March 24 but now we are considering to push it until April 2. Keeping in view the government’s recent decision to withdraw permission to hold indoor dining or other such gatherings due to the prevailing Covid-19 situation,” KPL president Arif Malik told APP.

The KPL is scheduled from May 16 to 27 with all the fixtures taking place at the Muzaffarabad Cricket Stadium.

According to Malik around 200 persons, including the players were expected to be present on the draft day. “It would’ve been great to invite more people on the draft day but a flare-up in the Covid-19 cases is restricting us to limit their number. We’ve already finalised the venue for the draft in accordance with the players’ consent,” he added.

He said the KPL management was in touch with a couple of broadcast companies and trying to enter a deal with them to reach out to every KPL fan. “Our talks with them are in the final phase. Hopefully, we’ll be able to lock-in them in the next two to three days,” he revealed.

Approved by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and with full backing of the Azad Jammu and Kashmir government, the 12-day topflight event will see six outfits locking horns for the top honours. The teams include Muzaffarabad Tigers, Mirpur Royals, Kotli Panthers, Rawalakot Hawks, Bagh Stallions, and Overseas Warriors.

Several Pakistan players including Shahid Khan Afridi, Babar Azam, Mohammad Hafeez, Mohammad Rizwan, Shaheen Shah Afridi will be seen in the action along with Azad Kashmir’s promising players.

Malik expressed the optimism that the league would offer a perfect chance to AJK’s budding players to showcase their skills at a bigger level. “We are sure to see several highly potential players emerging from this league.

“The event will also a go a long way in introducing Kashmir to the entire world,” he added.

Its not a huge amount of money for a T20 league. Hopefully this league successfully feeds into our domestic cricket and psl

Some old stagers being dragged out onto the field mixed in with some decent names.

A strange mix really.

They needed some names people have heard to help publicize and also gain viewership.

I see nothing wrong with the initiative, it's a good way to bring investment into Kashmir and hopefully improve the grassroots structure.

We'd be lucky if we can find a few good batsmen and all-rounders from the emerging category.

I'm referring to guys who retired years ago from cricket.

Yes, but it should be looked at as a regional tournament and 2nd to PSL in the country/ region with the aim to give chances to emerging players from the Kashmir region and with a smaller window, for that these are pretty decent amounts I think.

If you compare it to TNPL (Tamil Nadu Premier League) in India, the amounts are many times higher (Indian national team player was paid 5 lakh INR for the first season and still is under a million if I am not wrong). So I think its a much better start than general regional T20 leagues and its just the first season, if it can develop good viewership and public interest then money can go up in the coming seasons depending upon sustainability of the mod.

Amounts for gold, silver and emerging will be a pretty significant addition to the yearly package of the domestic and emerging players. Also can be really good for local emerging Kashmir region players who are yet establish their reputation, to not only earn but to also come into the radar of domestic regions, PSL and junior teams.

True, it is quite weird.

I think it's because of the money.

$30,000 after not even playing for a few years is like free money, especially since there aren't any expectations on these guys.

Plus, most of them weren't exactly as well off as players are nowadays from T20 leagues.

Interesting set of foreign players to say the least, owais shah, monty panesar, Phil mustard, Matt prior, surprisingly mostly English too and well past it.

Lol at overseas players.. did any of them played recently at decent level?

A very low quality league this is going to be. If they want to spread cricket in Kashmir, why not play FC games in the stadium in Muzaffarabad? What are they trying to achieve from this?

Money generation and creating more hype and interest towards cricket in the general public as well as younger kids in the region.

FC cricket is still the main platform to develop the basics of the game without a doubt but, I dont think its a hidden fact that to grow interest of the general public in most places you need to go with the T20 leagues as not only does it get more instant attention from general public but also brings in the money which can be used for the development of the game.

Yes once you have a lot of youngsters playing cricket professionally in the region with interest in the game than surely FC cricket can be thrown in the mix. There are few Kashmiri origin players already playing in QAE, idea is to increase the number and this league can a source to bring in more interest from young players making them adapt cricket as a profession.

Then why overpay overseas players who have not played in ages? If I remember, most of those players are part of coaching staff in different teams around the world. I don't know how will they earn any money from this competition and you don't need such useless tournaments to generate hype towards cricket. The biggest example is Afghanistan, they started enjoying cricket while in refugee camps when Pakistan won the WC in 1992 and then in 2009 as well. You do not need international cricketers of Pakistan to waste their time and energy on this tournament especially in an already very tight international schedule.

Why would businessmen invest in something that isn't profitable? Be releastic

It is a private league that has got nothing to with PCB apart from getting NOC.

Every tom dick and harry is organizing a tournament these days. Last week, there was a tape ball tournament being held in an international stadium in Gujranwala. Some people are just cricket fans and they want to invest in it regardless of the end product.

The availability of other overseas players could have been an issue and just to add that bit of international mix they selected these names. Otherwise for the same pay they could have gotten quite a few active players. So arguable? Yes but, they thought it’s necessary for the brand and possibly by next year they can involve some other active players as well.

Even for Afghanistan their main rise started post T20 cricket and more players started getting interested in the sport. Yes their veterans and experienced ones learnt and got interested in the sport while while in Pakistan during the times you are referring to.

Pak regulars will be playing in WI at that time so they wont be playing in the league. I am also not fond of them especially the pacers playing so much T20 cricket in home and away leagues but, if they play in other leagues as well then I cant really target KPL being there as well especially as a 10 day or so tournament.

HBL PSL franchises write letter to PCB after launch of KPL

Franchise owners are concerned that KPL will be considered ‘mini PSL’

Saleem Khaliq in Karachi

06 July, 2021

HBL PSL franchises have written a letter to the Pakistan Cricket Board, expressing their reservation over the newly-launched Kashmir Premier League (KPL).

The draft for the inaugural edition of the KPL was held in Islamabad on Saturday, where all six participating teams formulated their squads. The event is scheduled to take place from August 6-16, 2021, in Muzaffarabad.

In their email to PCB Chairman Ehsan Mani, HBL PSL franchises collectively recorded their official protest regarding the board approving the aforementioned league. The franchises reminded PCB that they were assured by the board before the launch of HBL PSL that it will be the only T20 tournament in Pakistan.

However, now PCB has given approval to another T20 league, which comprises of foreign players. The franchises are concerned that KPL will be considered ‘mini PSL’, which could bring down the value of HBL PSL and affect their sponsorship contracts negatively.

Franchises believe that it is the responsibility of PCB to safeguard their premier T20 tournament. Franchise owners have requested Mani to closely look into this matter and review the approval given to the Kashmir Premier League.

Wasim Khan to address HBL PSL franchises' reservations over KPL

HBL PSL franchises had written a letter to Ehsan Mani, collectively recording their official protest

Saleem Khaliq in Karachi

07 July, 2021

PCB Chief Executive Wasim Khan will address HBL PSL franchises’ reservations over the newly-launched Kashmir Premier League (KPL), scheduled to take place from August 6-16, 2021, in Muzaffarabad.

HBL PSL franchises had written a letter to the Pakistan Cricket Board Chairman Ehsan Mani, collectively recording their official protest regarding the board approving the aforementioned league. The franchises reminded PCB that they were assured by the board before the launch of HBL PSL that it will be the only T20 tournament in Pakistan. The franchises were concerned that KPL will be considered ‘mini PSL’, which could bring down the value of HBL PSL and affect their sponsorship contracts negatively.

According to sources, Mani had sent his reply in an email to the franchise owners. However, after sometime he sent another email in which he asked the owners to ignore the earlier email. There was no reason given, but sources added that a close associate of Mani asked him to distance himself from the first email.

Now, Wasim Khan will consult with the lawyers and will formulate a detailed reply, which will then be sent to the PSL franchises owners in the next few days. Board is keeping a close eye on the possible effects that KPL will have on HBL PSL. Wasim will brief PSL franchises owners regarding how KPL will function.

Sources further added that a big development is expected soon regarding HBL PSL’s financial model. PCB had taken the services of a retired Supreme Court judge regarding the judicial review of the financial model.

Said this before aswel.. Its better if KPL gets banned or does not get supported. Some people are enjoying this as if Kashmir has been made independant. At the end of the day, this effects our PSL.

Hopefully KPL is a big failiure. Pakistan should not even give them grounds

Ok, now these guys have a problem with a league in Kashmir as well? Bunch of selfish...

PSL is a business, not a charity club. A competitor gets born, obviously there will be an issue.

IF Psl losses out to these leagues, its Pakistan cricekts loss as they wont be getting income.

KPL is a joke of laegue after i read the name Usman Mughal. A wannabe cricketer of Rawalpindi who just roams around and probably used refrences to get into the team

PSL franchise owners had problems adding new teams to PSL as well based upon their initial contract If I am not wrong. While at the same franchise owners were running T10 league in Abu Dhabi.

Contract definitely has to be respected by PCB but, I think both the parties need to find a middle ground here. PSL has grown possibly more than the expectations were in the first season so if franchises would have been open to adding a team or two to make the overall cake bigger by expanding the league, possibly Kashmir’s team could have been added to PSL. As per my understanding PCB was itching to expand the model couple of seasons back itself but, franchises werent ready for that.

PCB inaugurated the PSL in season 1 on the back foot as at that time there was no cricket in Pakistan and cricket wasn’t creating the hype it used to due to the considerable lack of sellable star power at that time especially in white ball cricket. I think franchises should have been more flexible to adapt to the changing dynamics in recent times and that would have made the pool bigger as well. In my opinion its still not too late for them to think about expanding PSL in the coming season or so (Before I think their 10 years contract expires) rather than keeping pulling the PCB through legal rope.

Need a significantly better TV rights and title sponsorship deal before a new team is added. Also existing PSL Franchises invested in Pakistan Cricket at a time when there was no demand but they did it out of patriotism and even sucked up losses. They deserve to enjoy the fruits of a few uninterrupted PSL Seasons at home with full crowds and sponsorships before someone else joins to share the spoils.

There are so many T20 leagues other than IPL in India and it doesn't effect their brand value.

This Kashmir league has defo got under India's skin big time! If Pak's intention was partly to further infuriate India then we've succeeded. Indian media has gone all haywire about it telling viewers the story of Kashmir!:))):))):))):)))

Can someone confirm if Willow TV in USA will be broadcasting this league? I have seen on some articles that it will be shown on Willow TV, but I don’t see this league listed on their official website and fixture.

Someone please confirm this for me.
