291 players invited for U19 trials

• Trials to be held in Abbottabad, Karachi, Lahore, Multan, Quetta and Rawalpindi from 11-19 September

Lahore, 5 September 2020:

As many as 291 teenagers will undergo trials for the six U19 Cricket Associations sides, the Pakistan Cricket Board announced today.

The trials will be held from 11-19 September and will be conducted by a four-member selection panel comprising Saleem Jaffar, Sanaullah Baloch, Taufiq Umar and Wajahatullah Wasti, following which teams for the national U19 tournaments will be announced. The selection panel will be supported by the coaches and assistant coaches of the six U19 teams.

Each major cricket centre of every Cricket Association will host trial matches over two days. On 11 and 12 September, Multan Cricket Stadium, Multan, and Abbottabad Cricket Stadium, Abbottabad, will hold trials for Southern Punjab U19 and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa U19, respectively.

LCCA Ground, Lahore, and Pindi Cricket Stadium, Rawalpindi, will play hosts to trial matches for Central Punjab U19 and Northern U19 sides on 14 and 15 September after which trial matches to select the Sindh U19 team will be staged at Karachi’s National Stadium on 17 and 18 September.

Bugti Stadium, Quetta will be hosting trial matches on 18 and 19 September for selection of the Balochistan U19.

The players invited to appear for the trials include:

• Those who have represented Pakistan U19

• Those who played U19 tournaments in the 2019-20 domestic season

• Those who played U16 tournaments in the 2018-19 and 2017-18 domestic seasons

• Top performers of the Inter-district tournament 2018-19

Strict Covid-19 protocols will be implemented to ensure health and safety of players. As such, temperatures checks will be done on entry points of the venues. Players will have to wear masks when not inside the boundary ropes and maintain social distancing at any given time. Sharing of equipment and use of saliva on ball will not be allowed.

The National U19 One-Day Tournament and the National U19 Three-Day Tournament will be played at Lahore, Muridke and Sheikhupura from 13 October to 29 November. Complete schedule of the 2020-21 domestic season is available here.

pathetic from PCB.

U19 trials are suppose to be open trials, this is ridiculous

I don’t think it is as bad as you are stating.

It is almost like scouting the youngsters.

I know hating on everything the PCB does is the default position here but c'mon, this is the norm for international sports in any country.

Number stuck out to me because it is the high score of Viv and one other batsmen
.... Sarwan

Pathetic from PCB

There has been no grass root cricket(club cricket then city/district) since the new consitution so on what basis they have been picked. This wasim khan is all talks, no progess on city cricket so far. It is affecting so many youngsters

in pakistan club scene, alot of people join at the ages below 19 years. Some are even u16 rejects whohave improved.

What PCB just did here is wasted their time. They spent alot of time training in the nets and now with this announcement, they will not play this year or get a chance atleast.

Picking players from open trials is crazy , hopefully only happening cause of covid.

I hope club cricket and inter city cricket starts, as players develop at different times

Nadeem Khan said it on the day he was appointed as Director NHPC that there will be no open trials, he said it was waste of time & money and they would rather go with scouting

if club tournaments are taking place and the right guys are scouted and reported to trails than fair enough.

They need to verify the ages properly because the nonsense of fake ages is as bad as its ever been. Any player chosen must show verified ages not just faked birth certificates because the wrist tests are not working

They are not calling in random 291 players. There is age group setup below U19 as well which includes U16, there have also been number of training programs and sponsored programs for U13 as well. So ofcourse PCB would have taken into account top players from such programs few years ago along with the recommendations from different clubs and academies, also they might have taken some mini trials to filter players out. No one can expect all the regions to do 1000s of trials from the word go or select their squads based upon stats of age group matches, so obviously there has to be some sort of a filter mechanism to take place.

Now thats aside as I have mentioned few times there should be revival of school and collage cricket. There is some really good talent we are missing there because of no proper career road map.

To be honest, its not PCB's job to identify age. All they are required to do is look at the Bay-Forms.

It is the job of the govt to make sure that not only do people need to register their children on time but to finish the corruption of age reduction.

Definitely sounds like a better system than just having random players turn up for a one or two day trial, bowl a couple of deliveries or face a couple and decide whether a player has potential based on that.

At least with a good scouting network they'll be watching players in actual games and hopefully over a season to decide who can make the step up.

Don't often get to say this but well done PCB. As long as they can remove the corruption, nepotism and age cheating, then we should see good results from this in the future.

LAHORE: While a number of deserving players are out, many undeserving ones have been included in the list of probables called for the Central Punjab’s Under-19 trials at the LCCA Ground here on Sept 14 and 15.

A total of 51 players are invited to select the Central Punjab squad for the National Junior Cricket Championships. The trials of other regions are also being held — Sindh, Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Northern — on different dates and cities until Sept 19.

The Central Punjab probables show up many surprises with nearly half of them — 24 — are from Lahore, while Faisalabad, Sialkot, Gujranwala, Narowal, Gujrat, Layyah, Sargodha, Bhakkar, Mandi Bahauddin, Hafizabad, Mianwali districts have little representation.

The players, who have never played in any PCB competitions in the past, are among the probables. The list includes Lahore’s quartet of Ahmed Sattar, Khurram Riaz, Mohammad Subhan and Mudassar Gohar with last name being younger brother of Pakistan international Zafar Gohar.

Moreover, Adnan Jan, also from Lahore, is a left-arm-spinner and he has taken seven wickets in the 2019 season but he has been included in the list of wicket keepers in which Lahore’s Hasnain Ali is the only other candidate. So if Adnan doesn’t make it to the final squad as a spinner he is likely to find himself selected as the second wicket-keeper!

Kabir Ahmed, selected as a batsman in the list, has reportedly gone to Afghanistan some three years ago after playing in the under-16 event. Left-arm-spinner Mohammad Israr, who took just three wickets in the Inter-district tournament last year for East Zone, is selected while off-spinner Yasin Khan couldn’t get a place despite claiming six wickets.

Another surprise induction is that of Anas Waheed despite picking up only two wickets in Inter-district under-19 event last year.

Yet another glaring inclusion is Lahore spinner Mohsin Irshad, who was deemed to be over-aged last year by the PCB, while Rameez Imran, also from Lahore, is said to be nephew of veteran Pakistan batsman Mohammad Hafeez. He is also included in the list of spinners despite playing only two matches in under-16 regional event in 2017.

Moreover, another former Pakistan former player Akram Raza, who is also the Central Punjab’s Second-XI head coach has got his son Noman Akram included in the list without playing any PCB tournament.

Among those neglected in spite of giving good performances are all-rounder Hasnat Abbas, who scored 285 runs and took 30 wickets with his leg-spinners in the regional under-16 tournament regional cricket and went on to represent Pakistan team in that age group.

Another deserving case is that of wicket-keeper Shahwaiz Irfan, who played the Under-16 Pentangular Cup and regional cricket. Also missing is all-rounder Osama Zahid, who played for Central Punjab under-16 last year. Two others absentees are left-arm paceman Mohammad Ibrar and batsman Usman Nadeem after both of them featured in the Under-16 Pentangular Cup U-16 in the past.

Scathing. Central Punjab has always been fishy, good to see them get rid of Ijaz Ahmed Jr after continuous backing of the Akmals and Salman Butt. Now need to shuffle up these folks contributing to parchi selections like Akram Raza.

Should be an inquiry done here.

good news, just heard that PCB has made them open trials

PCB Update on U19 trials

• Local boys and outstation players to attend trials on 16 and 17 September, respectively

• Players born on or after 1 September 2001 eligible to appear in open trials;

Lahore, 10 September 2020:

Encouraged by the government’s decision to open educational institutions from 15 September, the Pakistan Cricket Board today decided to maximise the participation of the teenage cricketers and hold open trials for the selection of six U19 Cricket Association squads that will feature in the National One-Day Tournament from 13 October and National Three-Day Tournament from 5 November.

The open trials will now be held from 16-19 September at major cricket centres of all Cricket Associations and those who are born on or after 1 September 2001 will be eligible to appear.

To provide equal opportunities to all the players and avoid crowding at the venues, the local players will undergo trials on day one, while the teenagers arriving from outside the venues will attend trials on the second day. This will also help the non-local players to plan their respective trips.

Following the two-day activity, 40 players will be shortlisted for each of the six Cricket Associations, who will feature in trial matches, on 18 and 19 September, to stake claims in the final 20-player squads.

The trials will be held under strict Covid-19 protocols, which are available below along with the schedule of the trials. The players are advised to bring their own food items and energy drinks to keep themselves hydrated.

Keeping the comfort of teenagers and their parents and guardians at the forefront, the PCB will run a four-day-long online registration process from 11-14 September.

The players will be required to bring original copies of their B-forms for pre-trial age verification.

National High Performance Centre coaches will be involved in the trial processes at the LCCA ground in Lahore and the Pindi Cricket Stadium in Rawalpindi. Trials in Abbottabad, Karachi, Multan, Quetta will be conducted by members of the National Junior Selection Committee, who will be joined by the teams’ head coaches.

Saleem Jaffar, Chairman of the National Junior Selection Committee, said: “The PCB has been encouraged by the government’s decision to open educational institutions from 15 September and has now decided to hold open trials for the selection of six U19 sides for the National Three-Day and One-Day Tournaments.

“The selectors had initially invited limited number of players due to the evolving Covid-19, while taking into consideration the youngsters’ health and safety.

“The selectors have also made this decision based on feedback and comments we have received from various quarters on certain deserving players, who had failed to make the cut in the initially list of 291 players.

“With limited age-group cricket played at the grass roots level in the past 18 months and supported by the government’s decision to open educational institutions from 15 September, it is appropriate that we revisit our strategy and convert this into open trials, which will provide equal and fair opportunity to all cricketers born on or after 1 September 2001.

“However, the eligible players are strongly advised to bring with them their original B-forms for pre-trial age verification.”

Trials breakdown (trials will be held from 0800-1800):

Day one, 16 September, trials for local players

Day two, 17 September, trials for outstation players

Day three and four, 18-19 September, trials of shortlisted players

Schedule:

16-19 September – Balochistan, Bugti Stadium. Selection panel: Wajahatullah Wasti, Hussain Khosa and Mazhar Deenari

16-19 September - Central Punjab, LCCA Ground. Selection panel: Coach National High Performance Centre, Tanveer Shoukat and Irfan Fazil

16-19 September – Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Abbottabad Stadium. Selection panel: Taufiq Umar, Saqib Faqir and Mohammad Siddiq

16-19 September – Northern, Pindi Cricket Stadium. Selection panel: Coach National High Performance, Bilal Ahmed and Fahad Akram

16-19 September – Sindh, National Stadium. Selection panel: Sanaullah Baloch, Tahir Mehmood and Hanif Malik

16-19 September – Southern Punjab, Multan Cricket Stadium. Selection panel: Saleem Jaffer, Kamran Khan and Hafiz Majid Jahangir

Covid-19 Protocols

• Strict Covid-19 protocols will be implemented to ensure health and safety of players. As such, temperatures checks will be done on entry points of the venues
• Players will have to wear masks when not inside the boundary ropes and maintain social distancing at any given time
• Sharing of equipment and use of saliva on ball will not be allowed

There have been a decent number of pictures of the trials as well as a short video released by the PCB

Open trial should never happen again for six teams. It is a disaster

You can have open trials of city cricket then filter out best players through performances

Yes on their Facebook but my point is that they need to be doing releases etc to show interest and also not everyone follows their FB page

I have pulled out some stuff from there from yesterday

The second day of the open trials for selection of the Central Punjab U19 team underway in Lahore. Cricketers from outside Lahore and rest of Central Punjab are taking part in the trials today. Good luck to all the participants!

Open trial rule

8 balls to bat and 8 balls to bowl

Lol is this a joke?

My friends there are hundreds of kids. Most of them bowl 100ks or bat like tullaybaaz. I’m sure the more talented ones get a second round.

First you wanted open trial and now you are complaining again .?What was procedure for last year open trail ?

Where did I want open trials for six teams?

Ideal system ahould be

Open trials for 90 city cricket associations(U13, U16 and U19). Best performers(around 40 players) of city associations within the cricket association will be picked. A camp of two months with these 40 cricketers then select your squad.

Hopefully city cricket is launched as soon as possible

U19 squads for six Cricket Associations announced

• Around 7000 players participated in the nationwide open trials for selection of the six squads

• “We tried to give maximum opportunities to the players who turned-up for the open trials, I am happy with the final merit-based selection of the six squads,” says head of national junior selection committee Saleem Jaffer

Lahore, 1 October 2020:

The national junior selection committee headed by former Test fast bowler Saleem Jaffer today announced the U19 squads of the six Cricket Associations who would compete in the National U19 three-day and one-day tournaments as part of the domestic season 2020-21.

The PCB endeavoured to maximise the participation of the teenage cricketers and held open trials for the selection of the squads that will feature in the National One-Day Tournament from 13 October and National Three-Day Tournament from 5 November.

The U19 season commences with the first round of the one-day fixtures between the six teams at three venues (LCCA Ground, Gaddafi Stadium and Country Club Ground Muridke) on Tuesday, 13 October.

Around 7000 players took part in the open trials that were held at six cricket centres across the country. The open trials were held from 16-19 September at major cricket centres of all Cricket Associations and those who are born on or after 1 September 2001 were eligible to appear.

After a two-day open trial activity, 40 players were shortlisted for each of the six Cricket Associations, who featured in trial matches, on 18 and 19 September, to stake claims in the final 20-player squads.

The trials were held under strict Covid-19 protocols. National High Performance Centre coaches were involved in the trial processes at the LCCA ground in Lahore and the Pindi Cricket Stadium in Rawalpindi. Trials in Abbottabad, Karachi, Multan, and Quetta were conducted by members of the National Junior Selection Committee, who were joined by the teams’ head coaches.

Saleem Jaffar, Chairman of the National Junior Selection Committee, said: “We tried to give maximum opportunities to the players who turned-up for the open trials, I am happy with the final merit-based selection of the six squads and we are all encouraged by the massive turn-out at the trials across the country.

“Cricket remains the number one passion of the nation and teenagers in the country strive to prosper in the sport and aim to represent the country. There was a real enthusiasm among the boys to showcase their talent at the trials. I also want to thank the players who participated, their parents and the PCB staff as well as the ground staff at all six venues for their exemplary discipline and strict implementation of the Covid-19 protocols. At the end of the process, we have chosen the best possible squads from all six Cricket Associations.

“I am hopeful of a competitive U19 cricket season as this stage is a stepping stone for these players towards professional cricket. We have produced some world-class players in the past from the same stage and this year too we should have some talented players emerge from the three-day and one-day events.”

Meanwhile, the first Covid-19 tests of the six squads including the team officials will take place on Saturday in Lahore and the second test will be held on Sunday.

Central and Southern Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Northern will be tested at the PC Hotel. Players based in Lahore would also be tested at the PC Hotel on the same day.

Sindh and Balochistan squads will also be tested at their central station at Muridke Country Club; all six squad members clearing the test will then enter the Bio-Secure zone in Lahore.

• PCB to provide round-ups in English and Urdu

Lahore, 12 October 2020:

Teenage cricketers from the six Cricket Associations begin their quest for the National U19 One-Day Tournament trophy from tomorrow. The event, which serves as a steppingstone for these players to graduate to the Pakistan U19 side, will be played across Lahore, Muridke and Sheikhupura.

Sindh will be eager to defend the title with PKR1million on offer as the winning prize. The runner-up will bag PKR500,000. The players will have the incentive to bring out their best performances in every match as the man-of-the-match will get PKR10,000 for every league match.

The best performers of the tournament – best player, best batsman, best bowler and best wicketkeeper – will receive PKR50,000 each and the man-of-the-final will be awarded PKR20,000.

This year’s tournament will be played on double-league basis and the top two teams at the end of the league stage will compete in the final on 2 November.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, all six teams are lodged in a local Lahore hotel in a bio-secure bubble; the teams have practiced at the National High Performance Centre and the Gaddafi Stadium in the lead-up to the tournament.

The U19 One-Day Tournament will be followed by National U19 Three-Day Tournament, which commences on 5 November.

The captains of the six teams are keenly looking forward to the event which will provide them and their teammates a great opportunity of impressing the junior selection committee while introducing their talent to the cricketing world.

Balochistan U19 captain Mohammad Ibrahim Snr: “We are very excited and look forward to the tournament which provides us an opportunity to make a name. The training camp at the National High Performance Centre and Gaddafi Stadium provided us the chance to sharpen our skills and now our team is ready to make an impression with our performances on the field.”

Central Punjab U19 captain Mohammad Huraira: “Being part of a bio-secure bubble is a new experience. Besides practice, the players are keeping themselves busy by playing indoor games. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa U19 captain Abbas Ali: “We are very happy that we got a chance to practice at the world-class facilities at the National High Performance Centre and the Gaddafi Stadium. Our squad has a number of Pakistan U16 players and we hope they will perform well. Our target is to lift the trophy and we will collectively work hard towards that goal.”

Northern U19 captain Mohammad Raza-ul-Mustafa: “We have some very talented batsmen and potent fast bowlers in our squad. I have full belief in my team that we can surely lift the trophy. I feel this will be a very exciting event.”

All players and support staff are following the protocols and now is the time to concentrate on cricket. We have a strong team and I am confident we can defend our title. We will enter the field as defending champions and I have full faith in my squad as I feel they can deliver as per our management’s expectations.”

Southern Punjab U19 captain Mohammad Shehzad: “Our team has some really talented players who have bright futures. We will approach the tournament with an aggressive mindset and strategy.
