Public anger grows at traffic jams during PSL teams movement in Lahore

Motorists and motorcyclists have run out of patience and started blaring horns during the movement of cricket teams participating in the HBL Pakistan Super League.

The teams travel from their hotel accommodation to Gaddafi Stadium or the LCCA Ground, the latter serving as a practice venue for the six teams.

At around 7:30pm on Monday, traffic wardens began halting all vehicles approaching Muslim Town Mor to secure the Canal Road bridge, where a team was expected to pass through the canal’s bridge at Muslim Town to go back to its hotel accommodation on The Mall. However, even by 8pm, the wardens had not received clearance to reopen the road. After being stuck for about 20 minutes, frustrated motorists in the nearly one-kilometre-long traffic jam began blowing their horns in protest.

Strict security measures have become standard since the resumption of international cricket in Pakistan over a decade ago. Yet, authorities continue to rely on traditional traffic control methods, causing a great deal of inconvenience to the public rather than adopting modern security technologies that could minimise disruption.

“We are bound to obey orders from higher authorities,” a traffic inspector at Muslim Town Mor told Dawn on condition of anonymity. “Yes, people are suffering, but ensuring the security of foreign teams and players is our first priority and in the national interest.”

Security forces use two primary routes for team movements — sometimes via Liberty Market and Gulberg, and other times along Canal Road, turning onto Ferozepur Road, which remains heavily congested almost 20 hours a day. Muslim Town Mor is a critical junction connecting areas like Johar Town, Thokar Niaz Beg, Wapda Town, Jallo Mor, Harbanspura, and further linking Ferozepur Road to Kasur.

A driver hired by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to transport players said such tight security is not enforced when individual cricketers arrive at airports. “If the authorities considered the public’s suffering, they would find better ways to minimise problems,” said a trader stuck in Monday’s traffic jam. “Instead of being a source of entertainment, cricket events are now causing mental torture.”

A PCB official, on the condition of anonymity, said the current traffic disruptions would likely continue until the PCB completes construction of a hotel near Gaddafi Stadium and the LCCA Ground, on a building recently acquired for teams accommodation.

“Our main priority should be to complete the building, on which a lot of work is yet to be done to transform it from a building to a hotel accommodation,” the PCB official said.

SO, PSL is restarting this May 17. Good to see the games back on, but the question is, will foreigners come back???

Yeah

Finn would have fired them through in one of the two games

Chapman also is a big loss. He was finding his groove.
Chapman has barely done anything all season and came in too late anyway. I don't think QG will miss him that much. But Finn Allen is a big loss because they needed someone like that in the opening slot.

Quetta Gladiators receive a major boost as Rilee Rossouw and Finn Allen are set to rejoin the squad sources

The cavalry is on its way!!!!

According to social media reports, Colin Munro gave the PCB officials a serious verbal lashing when the whole thing was going on. I doubt we will ever see him in Pakistan again.

Will the Pakistani public pay solidarity with the Pakistani armed and air force by turning out in record numbers for the remaining PSL games?

Surely the moral of the nation is high now and has completely neutralized our cricket teams poor performance over the last year which explained the poor crowd turnout in the previous games.

I am pretty sure the Franchises have had to pay the foreign players extra to convince them to come.

Going through the motion it is , after what has happened cricket remains a secondary objective , just hope Naqvi assures a full proof security plan.

PSL X resumes in full-swing after a short pause

The HBL Pakistan Super League X is all set to resume on Saturday, 17 May after a nine-day hiatus with Babar Azam’s Peshawar Zalmi taking on David Warner’s Karachi Kings at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium.

With last year’s runners up - Multan Sultans, who have won one out of nine games this year, ruled out of the title race in the 34-match tournament, the remaining five teams are in contention to qualify for the playoffs.

While Quetta Gladiators and Karachi Kings ranked first and second with 13 and 10 points, respectively, Islamabad United, Lahore Qalandars and Peshawar Zalmi face the prospect of must-win games.

Zalmi have two league games left, while Qalandars have one game to go. Both the teams, with four wins each to their name, will be fighting tooth and nail to bag crucial two points.

On Sunday, 18 May, Sultans will take on Gladiators in first of the two matches, while Zalmi will be up against Qalandars in another riveting contest. Shadab Khan’s United will lock horns with Kings in the last league game on 19 May.

The Qualifier, Eliminator 1 & 2 and the Final are scheduled at the Gaddafi Stadium Lahore from 21-25 May with Saturday, 24 May being the rest day.

Among the batters, after 26 HBL PSL X matches, Mohammad Rizwan (363 – Hanif Mohammad Cap), Sahibzada Farhan (321) and Fakhar Zaman (309) are the top three run getters. On the bowling front, Mohammad Abbas Afridi and Jason Holder are the joint leading wicket-takers (Fazal Mahmood Cap) with 15 scalps each in eight games, while Abrar Ahmed and Hasan Ali are joint-second on the ladder having snapped 14 poles each.
