[PICTURES/VIDEO] "This has been an atrocious bit of umpiring by both umpires" : Michael Holding

If mods can upload photo of the no ball for everyone's reference it will be good.

I cannot for one moment believe the umpire is that incompetent he missed such a huge no ball.

This umpire should be fired after this match, how can someone so incompetent be playing a world cup?
Abyasmall umpiring decision, it's either cheating or racism. Neither is any good.

Haven't been watching, but when Gayle reviewed that decision how did anyone else not see the no-ball?

Don't they usually check for the no-ball first during the review

Criminal in this day and age and it is absolute unacceptable even at domestic leagues level let alone the grandest stage of them all.

Massive embarrassment for ICC

incompetence

woulndt be surprised if he took it personally at how gayle reacted at the second review

People make mistakes but you cant have that at a World Cup.

As i said in the match thread, he is compromised now, should take no place in any other match. There is no way any one can have faith in his judgement

the no-ball was the delivery before, so the dismissal should have been a free hit

Clearly had a grudge against gayle. This fool was raising the finger on every appeal.

Should be fired after this match.

Real question is where is the 3rd ump? They can call no balls. And ive seen it. Why didnt he call it here.

While I admit it was sheer incompetence that it was not called a no-ball but the next ball was bowled without assuming it was a free hit. So Gayle missed it and it was hit fault

Karma.

Russell bowled 6 short pitched balls in one over, 4 were above shoulder height and bowler was not called for bouncers. He bowled 6 more in next over. At least couple of them were WIDE for height but weren't called. That was turning point of the match when batsmen perceived that Umpiring was biased.

Karma ! Balanced out with WI.

At some moment later in World Cup, it will balance out for Pakistan too, in favour.

There should be a rule for umpires also for his own mistakes, so in future they will not do it again . just like for player demerit point awarded same creatiria should follow for umpires also .

D8YqXqOUYAEVwFv.jpg

the ball that got gayle out should have been a free hit

also. this no ball reminds me of Amir no ball

Umpire decision has been far from fair in this match. Someone does not want to see Windies win today.

Umpire should be given out on such mistakes. Replace him with another umpire.

Exactly. You can blame the umpire for the no ball. But the next one is legal. People missing this simple point.

More than the on field umpire, it is the 3rd umpire, TV umpire and 4th umpire's fault, they are supposed to monitor each and every delivery and intervene when they need to.

What's their utility if they can't prevent big howlers like these???

All in all failure at multiple levels for ICC. I guess their number one mission these days is to appease BCCI, why get efficient and effective management of the sports at the global stage get in the way.

Regarding the people saying it was Gayle's fault for missing the next ball, that is not the point. Simple point is the umpiring error is so huge that it can be one of 3 things:

1. Incompetence. - Makes ICC look like idiots for having such incompetent umpires at the biggest event of their sport.
2. Cheating - cheating by Umpire to favour Australia. Or cheating by ICC to make Australia win since they did not expect WI to put up fight and want their big money teams to reach the semi for the money. Whole tournament fixed?
3.Racism - This will be the worst of the three if true

Haha Gayle's reaction when he was given LBW ball clearly missing leg was priceless..also the words he said when walking to the pavilion.:)))

Terrible umpiring in this game of astounding proportions.

Either they are favouring Australia or very very incompetent. Either way, drop these umpires after this game before they ruin a game completely.

So, i have seen at least four wrong decisions by umpires in this match against WI, three being overturned by DRS.

ICC, get out of BCCI's house and put yours in order. Its disgusting how Gaffney and that other umpire is allowed to ref the match.

"I am sorry Slats but the umpiring in this game has been atrocious - For one, even when I was playing, when they were not as strict as they are now, you were allowed one appeal - you dont appeal 2,3,4 times to the umpire, If the umpires are intimidate that means they are weak - this has been atrocious bit of umpiring by both" : Michael Holding

35.3 Zampa to Holder:

Poor call by umpire Ruchira Palliyaguruge. Second time his verdict has been overturned, by quite a telling margin mind you. Quicker legbreak, pitches on leg stump and drifts away to hit Holder around the knee roll as he misses the sweep, the umpire took his time and raised his finger. Holder went up straightaway....

That never looked out even to the naked eye on first viewing. No wonder Holder was shaking his head when the decision was overturned, really rotten umpiring. To make it worse the umpire was trying to laugh it off afterwards.

Man, we need to start holding umpires accountable for these gaffes, no excuse for such errors in the era of modern technology.

Icc needs to publicly apologise to WI for this!

This should be a sackable offense, if you can't call that you aren't fit to umpire local school cricket let alone be at the worldcup.

Not just the umpire, the whole umpire team, match referee and the ICC umpiring head should all be fired.

Imagine if India was on the receiving end of this, I believe ICC would have just dissolved itself and turned the reigns over to BCCI.

It was disgusting watching Gaffney during that period, most normal people go gun shy and try to be conservative if they go wrong with something he basically went I am going to get him, if not this appeal then the next one.

Definately lack in consentrarion, he simply missed it, was probably more interested in happenings on the striker’s end.

Obviously Windies lost they were competing against a 13 man Aussie side.

And what about the multiple DRS had to be overturned? Probably missed those too right?

Holding's comment about the umpires actually came later in the innings when Zampa appealed three or four times to the umpire after a single delivery and the umpire was eventually pressured by the prolonged appeal into raising his finger. The decision was then overturned on review.

Yes but he was commenting on the whole display rather than 1 decision. If a team correctly reviews 4 decisions and you still manage to get 1 wrong. You were nothing but horrible.

2 points should be given to WI.

WI looking good so far. They are strong contenders for a SF spot.

Someone should remind Holding of the Atrocious umpiring decisions made by West Indian Umpires during the Pakistan tour of the West Indies in 1977, 1988 and 1993 when a top Pakistan team were playing virtually against 12 or 13 men.

lol pak fans and their excuses!
Why dont you call it as it is? Windies should have easily won the match, but for their indiscipline batting. Credit to holder, unfortunately, russell, brathwaite etc think you need to hit 6s when the run rate is 6 AN OVER!

Every decision going against WI. 50-50 going for Australia. Even

This has been the way since the beginning of time. Australian players are trained as part of their preparations to deal with umpires by, for example, pressuring them or sucking up to them depending on the umpire in question.

You are missing Pakistan tour of WI 2000 as well...one of the most horrific series in terms of umpiring

This bal lwas before the Gayle wicket BUT it was a huge decision because it meant the next ball should have been a free-hit and Gayle would not have been out.

The umpiring in general throughout the England series and now in the world cup against Pakistan and the Windies has been disgraceful.

Having said all that, the Windies got away with at least 4 or 5 short ball wides against Pakistan.

Poor umpiring. Getting 4+ calls wrong is unacceptable. Umpiring is a tough job both you can’t get wrong so frequently- the odd error is fine.

it is possible that umpires could be involved in match fixing.
if cricketers can be implicating in fixing. so can umpires.

It wasnt just the no ball.. Gayle was given out twice in the previous Starc over and he immediately asked for a referral each time. There was a strange sound picked up in the stump mic the first time and you could give the umpire some leeway there.
Then we has the second successful review when it was pretty clear that ball was headed down the legside. Then we had the missed no hall and when he was given out the third time, about 2/5th of the ball was hitting the stumps at maximum.. Im positive most competent umpires wouldnt have given that out. Thats when Holding said on live commentary "the purpose of the" umpires call " stipulation is to save the umpire, not the player".

All umpires need to be held accountable for their performance, or lack thereof. Today was not international standard by any means.

Terrible umpiring however WI deserved to lose after allowing Aus to slip away from 79-5 to 288 all out.

That no ball from Starc! Even player umpire hybrid in street cricket would have called that, that is unpardonable at international level.

There is no racism or bias; just bad umpiring.

WI should have won regardless.

Umpiring is not the same as it used to be. However, I don't understand why we can't use technology for "no ball". The moment the bowler oversteps some kind of alert/signal should be raised so that this issue is tackled automatically.

Would require an incredibly complicated system that would probably cost a fair bit to develop.

It was very suspicious. Gunned Gayle three times, and all poor decisions. Could even be fixed!

Hes newzealander. Umpiring in favour of AUS

Lol this has to be one of the dumbest posts I've read on PP. It's like saying an Indian umpire would rule in favour of Pakistanis because they are padosis
