Personally, i feel that modern day sledging converting " The Gentleman's game " into WWE.
Someday it will lead to physical brawls i guess. Why can't players let the ball and bat to fight?
I was reading an article saying that invention of T20 cricket and inventions of IPL type of leagues are encouraging these sort of things. What do you think what are the reasons for these fights?

Cricketers don't know how to sledge these days as opposed to the Miandads and Merv Hughes of the previous decades.
It's just garbage being said these days,

I like sledging in thgame. It increases the intensity and emotion. Wahab Riaz spell vs Australia was a good recent example.

Absolutely, it is what makes some matches memorable. It should all be within limits however and should end once you step outside the boundary line.

OP Infact I think t20 leagues have reduced sledging. Players have become so friendly these days. Ind Aus didnt have the same intensity it had say in 2008.

This Ind v Sl sledging is surprising tbh and a refreshing change.

Yes.
Not everyone knows how to sledge, which leads to lines being crossed some times.
The logical response to that is not ban sledging, but to police the game actively so that players across all nations learn what is allowed and what is not.

I like the odd funny/intelligent comment here & there. I hate the horrible in your face every delivery with a string of expletives & others joining in-the 2013/2014 Ashes was appalling especially Johnson's conduct & the women's series that followed was a breath of fresh air with hard fought but very friendly proving it can be done, this series was far better & showed the men can play hard Cricket without resorting to the that garbage.

Also hated Flintoff's behaviour to Yuvraj back in the late 2000's-it just went on far too long & was obvious Yuvraj wasn't going to fall for it & get out yet it just carried on with other England fielders joining in.

I'm fine with sledging as long as it's constructive, and it doesn't get personal. Most people who are against it haven't actually played the game.

Standing in the field in silence, with not much happening, and hearing repetitive words of encouragement can get boring. Engaging with the opposition is always exciting, and spices the game up a bit.

Sledging and intimidation are all part of the game, and it can really test you at times. Being a fast bowler, often a stare, and getting into his breathing space is enough to really unsettle the batsman.

Sledging is good for the game if its made in the right spirit & remains on the field (just to disturb opposition) but if it is made to insult than it shouldn't be allowed.

Physical contact shouldn't be allowed on the field at all.

It's good but i don't like Indians doing it,especially ishant.:irfan

Sledging is exactly the same as it always has been.

Just that mics occasionally pick up stuff

How was Johnson's conduct in anyway appalling?

Did you complain when all and sundry gave him the same treatment for years before that and the Barmy army sang songs mocking the fact that his mother and wife didn't get on well?

Yes in a bad way

I used to do it in myself, but I don't support it anymore.

No, I don't. Some stares between a bowler and a batsman is fine, but not sledging.

Gavaskar in his commentary was mentioning how sledging was actually worse during the days he played. It's ridiculous how the OP mentioned that IPL and T20s are responsible for this..

I saw a video where Dennis Lillee 'booted' Miandad

Hell yes.

But yeah, not like that head banging stunt Ishant pulled off. :))

When you hear of Wasim sledging Viv Richards, or all the funny incidents of Miandad, Amir Sohail etc., that's the kind of stuff I want.

Shoaib Akhtar never had to head-bang. He had his own charm, aura, way of sledging. That's the kind of stuff I like.

Sledging which is funny, witty and appropriate is welcomed. It makes the game more fun. However, when you hear cricketers abusing each other's families and using that four-letter word after every delivery it ceases to be fun.

So yes, I support sledging in cricket but totally stand opposed to abusing in cricket.

Games man ship ...

Not abuses, fights and pompous displays.

The problem is the kids in the streets are looking at these players and thinking that this is what aggression is supposed to be.

Not cricket, not sports and not a good way to deal with matters

That was actually a very dangerous stunt by Ishant

You Look Like Tarzan, But Bowl Like Jane: Andrew Flintoff To Shoaib Akhtar

You Look Like Tarzan, But Bowl Like Jane: Andrew Flintoff To Shoaib Akhtar

Flintoff recalled an episode from a 2005 Test match against Pakistan wherein Akhtar kept calling Flintoff fat and the burly all-rounder gave it back to the speedster, but the end result wasn't too sweet for the Englishman.

Former England all-rounder Andrew Flintoff has been known to get into the skin of opposition players and that has also seen his team suffer like when he exchanged verbal volleys with Yuvraj Singh and saw Stuart Broad pay the price as the Indian batsman hit six sixes off the pacer in the 2007 WT20 game. Flintoff has now recalled a game where he engaged in a duel with Shoaib Akhtar only to see his stumps go for a walk in the park.

Speaking to Talk Sport, Flintoff recalled an episode from a 2005 Test match against Pakistan wherein Akhtar kept calling Flintoff fat and the burly all-rounder gave it back to the speedster, but the end result wasn't too sweet for the Englishman.

"Listen to this, I got feelings. He (Shoaib) kept having a go at me. He kept calling me ‘fat'. Fat this, fat that. I am not having this, I am thinking I am going to nip this in the b***. So, as I walked in, I said, Shoaib, it's all right, you look like Tarzan, but you bowl like Jane," Flintoff said.

"It haunted me straight away. I walked out to bat, I think 1st or 2nd ball, my off-stump was cart-wheeling back as he knocked it over. Then, as I walked off, he gave me a big ‘OOOHHHH'."

Former and current cricketers have been interacting with fans on social media these days as the world has come to a standstill due to the coronavirus outbreak and Akhtar took to his YouTube channel to suggest a series between India and Pakistan to raise funds to fight the pandemic.

"I want India and Pakistan to play a series. I want it to happen without crowds, just broadcasting unit should be there and the matches should be televised, three ODIs or T20Is should be played. I cannot understand why this is a bad idea," Akhtar said in a video posted on his YouTube channel.

"Players can play after undergoing testing, if the series happens, just think how many people will watch the matches on television, think about the funds the series can generate. For the first time, there will be no loser, there is everything to gain, imagine Indian team winning the match, and the funds going to Pakistan as well and vis-a-vis," the Rawalpindi Express said.

Banters and Sledging are considered to be a low blow by the West Indies cricketers of 20th century but the Aussies consider it to be the part and parcel of the game. Sometimes its done for fun and on other occasions it is done to dope batsman into playing false shots.

The history of the gentleman's game is littered with banters and sledging episodes. So name your best such episode and incidents here.

A hilarious one involved Viv Richards and Greg Thomas.

Greg Thomas, after beating Viv. Richards for three balls, walks up to him and says, "Can't see the ball? It's round, red, and has a seam on it." Viv stays silent.
Greg bowls again, and this time, gets dispatched six rows into the pavilion. Then Viv walks up to him and says, "you know what it looks like, maan. Now go find it."

And then there was the one featuring Daryl Cullinan and Shane Warne.

Warne: "I've been waiting two years for another chance at you"
Cullinan: "Looks like you spent most of it eating".

People may dislike it, but Jimmy has the number of his bunny.

Anderson played 4 tests in series and Eng lost all 4 tests. Gill scored runs to help his team win.

Evreything else is noise. Having said that, it's good to see players having banters.

Indians are clearly hurt about Anderson. Doesn't take much to get a reaction from them.

Gill 2nd highest run scorer in the series . Anderson with only 10 wickets in 4 matches .

It's clear who won the battle

That's why Anderson taunts his bunny.

English is not our mother tongue. When it comes to banter and sledging, Aussies and Englishmen will always have the upper hand.

Most of the wittiest sledges have come from English speaking people, even West Indies is English speaking.

And James Anderson averages 56 with the ball in his last 16 bowling innings. Thats why Gill asked him to retire and not continue to be a liability.

If I remember correctly, Andre Nel once sledged Shoaib Malik. Shoaib Malik proceeded to hit him for a four or a six. That was nice.

It was in 2002 or 2003 I believe.

One of my favorite sledges:

Mitchell Johnson to James Anderson: "Why are you chirping now, mate? Not getting wickets?"

Anderson proceeded to take a wicket and asked Johnson to shut up.

Does anybody remember Andre Nel vs Sreesanth? It was funny as hell.

One more comes to mind is Yuvraj Singh Vs Flintoff. Dhoni calmed down the argument but next over from Broad became the one which will be remembered for ages. 666666

Another one Amir Sohail vs Venkatesh Prasad. Amir taunted Prasad pointing towards the boundary may be indicating that he is going to hit the boundaries at will. Prasad kept quiet and next ball-boom. Wickets flying everywhere. Note that Prasad was a mediocre bowler with a snail pace but boy..what a revenge this was.

In one of the IPL matches Pollard had some arguments with opponent players. Umpire intervened as shushed the big man.. But Pollard being Pollard 🤣, He came up with a black tape on his mouth throughout the innings. I was in the stadium and literally rolling on the floor.

Apart from these there are many small incidents come to mind. But i have to say Cricket has become Sissy game with this gentleman's game crap. Softies now a days can't take a simple joke. A few characters with a bit of harmless banter makes the viewing experience interesting.

Our players can get the elite membership of this club lol
Pakistan players would love to join that league and be the top scorer of that league.

As far as sledging is concerned. I don't think many of us guys remember that sledging. It was Andrew Flintoff vs. Tino Best (2004).

Flintoff and Best had a humorous exchange during a Test match. Flintoff, frustrated by Best's aggressive bowling, said, "Mind the windows, Tino!" Best, replied, "I'll mind the windows, Freddy, you mind your batting average!

Aussies from 1999-2009, best sledgers ever produced. Even the greats like Mcgrath, Warne and Ponting never ever missed a chance to sledge other players on field

Tino was batting against Ashley Giles. Flintoff was trying to encourage him to hit big as the best chance of getting him out. It worked - Best was stumped going for a big one shortly after.
