Vitality Blast Off will return bigger and better next summer with a four-day festival of men’s and women’s domestic Twenty20 cricket.

An expanded Vitality Blast Off will feature seven men’s and women’s T20 double headers, in addition to Edgbaston again hosting a Vitality Blast double header with two Midlands rivalry games.

With the men’s county and women’s regional domestic fixtures to be announced next Thursday, the early release of the Vitality Blast Off schedule gives fans the chance to start planning for next season.

Vitality Blast Off begins with two Charlotte Edwards Cup and Vitality Blast double headers on Thursday 30 May at The Ageas Bowl and Emirates Old Trafford.

The opening day features Charlotte Edwards Cup champions Southern Vipers hosting Western Storm while Hampshire Hawks and Surrey, who both reached Vitality Blast Finals Day in July, also meet at The Ageas Bowl. Thunder, who played in their first Finals Day in June, welcome Central Sparks to Manchester while Lancashire Lightning meet Durham.

A rematch of this year’s Vitality Blast final headlines the Friday action as Somerset begin their title defence against Essex at the Cooper Associates County Ground, while Trent Bridge and the Seat Unique Riverside will also stage double headers.

Edgbaston will then host its marquee men’s double header - the only matches scheduled for that day - with Birmingham Bears taking on rivals Notts Outlaws, while near-neighbours Derbyshire Falcons and Leicestershire Foxes clash.

Vitality Blast Off will conclude with two more double headers at The Kia Oval and at the County Ground in Northampton on Sunday 2 June. Both reigning T20 champions travel to The Kia Oval where South East Stars will host Southern Vipers and Surrey will bid to reverse their semi-final defeat to Somerset.

More than 14,000 people attended the first-ever Vitality Blast Off at Edgbaston this summer as fans enjoyed all-action entertainment on and off the field.

With 2024 Vitality Blast Finals Day already a sell-out, Blast Off provides all cricket fans with the opportunity to enjoy Edgbaston’s famed atmosphere and supporters can now register for priority access here with tickets going on general sale on Tuesday 5 December.

ECB Managing Director of County Cricket, Neil Snowball, said: “It is hugely exciting to be able to confirm that Vitality Blast Off will be expanded to include eight venues next summer as we aim to attract more people to watch men’s and women’s domestic cricket.

“We have scheduled some of the highest-profile men’s and women’s games during the four-day window, which will also launch the new Vitality Blast season in style.

“We saw how successful Vitality Blast Off was this summer when Edgbaston did a remarkable job, as they always do, to put on a show for fans on and off the field and we’re determined to build on that.

“I know supporters will also be excited to know that the men’s county and women’s regional schedule is just a week away from being announced, and now is the perfect time to get in contact with your local county about memberships for next season.”

Yorkshire win on Root return - T20 Blast round-up

Adam Lyth stole the show from former England team-mate Joe Root as Yorkshire thrashed Worcestershire on the opening night of the 2024 T20 Blast.

The rain stayed away but batters fell across Thursday's five games with 45 of a possible 50 first-innings wickets falling as Durham were skittled for 75 and Worcestershire bowled out for 101 while Hampshire and Essex finished nine down.

On his first Blast appearance for the Vikings in two years, Root made a run-a-ball 13 in support of Lyth’s swashbuckling 55 from 33 deliveries as the hosts beat the Rapids by eight wickets with 50 balls to spare at Headlingley.

Luke Wells hit an unbeaten 49 as Lancashire Lightning were even more convincing winners, needing only eight overs to beat Durham by nine wickets after Tom Aspinwall’s burst of 4-18 whipped the visitors out at Old Trafford.

Northants Steelbacks were the other North Group winners as evergreen Ravi Bopara smashed an unbeaten 56 to see them pip visiting Derbyshire Falcons off the final ball.

There was also a thrilling finale at Southampton as Surrey edged past three-time winners Hampshire Hawks thanks to a virtuoso display from Tom Curran who claimed three wickets and smashed 37 not out to win it with four balls remaining.

Last year’s beaten finalists Essex suffered an upset at Bristol as left-armers Matt Taylor (4-22) and David Payne (4-24) caused chaos before in-form James Bracey cleared the ropes four times to guide Gloucestershire to a five-wicket win.

At Old Trafford, evergreen Steven Croft took a sublime over-the-shoulder catch to dismiss Matty Potts, who top-scored with 15, batting at eight for Durham.

Wells smashed three sixes and posted a strike rate of 195 as the Lightning raced home with 12 overs in hand, despite losing skipper Keaton Jennings to a back spasm just before the game.

Across the Pennines, Ethan Brookes made 42 and Gareth Roderick 25 from 16 deliveries but they were the only Rapids in double figures as the visitors were bowled out with 26 balls remaining, with Yorkshire off-spinner Dan Moriarty claiming 4-25.

Worcestershire did oust Dawid Malan and Shan Masood but opener Lyth and Root put on an unbroken stand of 53 to secure victory.

At Wantage Road, Derbyshire's David Lloyd smashed three sixes in a knock of 41 from 22 balls while Wayne Madsen made 37 at better than a run a ball as the Falcons posted 162-7.

Ricardo Vasconcelos’ breezy 42 gave the hosts a platform in reply but it was Bopara and Zimbabwean all-rounder Sikandar Raza (38) who just about kept them in touch with the required rate.

The hosts needed 18 off the final 12 deliveries but that became 14 to win off the final over when Bopara hit a six off the first ball from Luis Reece and added three runs from the next three deliveries.

Skipper Lewis McManus found the ropes off the penultimate ball and then ran the single his side needed off the final delivery to ensure a winning start.

At Bristol, Essex recovered from 0-2 after three balls and 11-3 in the third over to post 141-9 thanks largely to 48 from 27 balls by Jordan Cox, who smashed three sixes and shared a stand of 64 from 39 balls with Paul Walter, who hit 43 from 31.

In reply, Bracey made 49 from 30 balls and Cam Bancroft cracked 32 from 18 as the hosts got home with three overs to spare.

In the other South Group game, Hawks' Toby Albert hit two maximums and five fours in his 46, before becoming one of Curran’s three victims.

Liam Dawson smashed 30 off 12 balls before holing out to Jason Roy off Australian quick Spencer Johnson to help haul the Hawks to 162-9.

Surrey's star-studded line-up paced the chase superbly with Laurie Evans and Jamie Smith going through the gears to each pass 30 before Curran rattled two late sixes in his 20-ball stay to see the visitors over the line.

Middlesex trounced by Somerset after record-low total of 78

Riley Meredith took a career-best 4-12 as defending T20 Blast champions Somerset hammered hapless Middlesex by nine wickets at Lord's to go top of the South Group.

The Australian bowled 17 dot balls in a relentless opening spell, full of pace and movement, on his way to taking three of the first four wickets as the hosts crumbled to 50-9 after only 74 deliveries of their innings.

A 28-run partnership between last-wicket pair Tom Helm (15) and Noah Cornwell (15*) did restore relative order but could not prevent Middlesex from recording their lowest ever total in the Blast of 78.

In reply, sensible knocks from Tom Banton (48*) and Tom Kohler-Cadmore (30*) saw last year's winners cruise to victory in the 13th over.

Somerset won the toss chose to field on a grey and cold night at Lord's, and Meredith, and his opening bowling partner Craig Overton (2-21) tore into the Middlesex line-up immediately.

After eight overs, the hosts were 33-6, losing wickets off the first ball of the second, third, fourth and fifth overs.

Josh Davey (2-13) and Ben Green (2-17) then combined to mop up the remaining wickets inside nine overs.

Somerset lost Will Smeed early, and the normally aggressive Banton and Kohler-Cadmore batted maturely in an unbeaten stand of 78 to see the visitors home to a third win in five games.

Banton mixed quick running between the wickets with selective power hitting, finishing with a flurry after a six to deep mid-wicket and a reverse sweep behind square.

He was assisted by Kohler-Cadmore, who went at a run-a-ball in his unbeaten 30.

The defending champions have now won back-to-back matches in the competition, after thrashing Hampshire on Sunday, and go above Sussex and Surrey at the top of the table on net run rate.

Middlesex, whose total was two runs fewer than their previous lowest score of 80, set against Kent in 2021, have now lost four of their five group matches and are bottom of the pile.

T20 Blast round-up: Hain stars but rain wipes out games

Sam Hain hit an unbeaten 98 off 48 balls as Birmingham Bears beat Yorkshire by four runs in a final-ball finish to strengthen their position at the top of the T20 Blast North Group.

The Bears totalled 214-7, with Hain unable to get on strike in the final over, and despite seven sixes by Donovan Ferreira in his 66, Yorkshire could only reply with 210-5.

Kiran Carlson made 87 off 47 balls as Glamorgan piled up 235-6 in defeating second-placed Sussex in a weather-affected South Group game, and elsewhere there were victories for Durham and Kent Spitfires.

The match between Notts and Leicestershire was abandoned as a no-result after the players went off for rain when the Outlaws were 175-7 after 17 overs.

With heavy rain in the south of England, no play was possible in three games between Northamptonshire Steelbacks and Lancashire Lightning, Surrey and Middlesex and Essex and Somerset.

Birmingham Bears' seventh victory in nine games means they have 14 points and lead North Group by three points from Lancashire and Durham, with Surrey still two points clear of Sussex in the south despite their washout at The Oval.

The Blast was back after a fortnight's break for the County Championship, but Birmingham Bears - winners in 2014 - picked up where they left off by recording their fifth successive victory.

It proved a far closer finish than seemed likely at Headingley after Hain, who hit eight sixes and five fours, propelled the Bears' total well past 200 and Yorkshire lost Adam Lyth early in their reply.

But Dawid Malan laid the foundation for the chase with 54, adding 62 with James Wharton (29) and 57 with Ferreira before he was caught off spinner Danny Briggs at the start of the 16th over.

Ferreira completed his 50 from just 26 balls but holed out off Dan Mousley and the task of scoring 11 runs from the final over, bowled by George Garton, proved too much for the Vikings, who could only manage six.

At Chester-le-Street, Michael Jones hit three sixes in the last over in his 39 not out off 17 balls as Durham reached 190-5 against Worcestershire Rapids.

After Colin Ackermann's dismissal by Brett D'Oliveira left them 80-3 at halfway, the home side lifted the tempo with Ollie Robinson scoring 41 off 30 before Jones and Bas de Leede (22 not out) shared an unbroken 54 for the sixth wicket.

Worcestershire were in the hunt as opener Kashif Ali (45) and Josh Cobb (39) put on 65 in six overs but no-one else reached 20 as Ben Raine and Ben Dwarshuis took three wickets each to bowl the Rapids out for 168 and seal a 22-run win.

Joe Clarke was again in brilliant form for Notts Outlaws at Trent Bridge, scoring 79 off 41 balls before being bowled by Ben Mike, but the weather had the final say in their game against Leicestershire Foxes.

The umpires hoped to resume with Leicestershire facing a revised target of 181 from 16 overs, but more rain arrived and the match had to be called off.

Glamorgan make big total at Hove

Glamorgan
looked on course for a T20 club record total of 241 or more when they reached 135-1 at the halfway point against Sussex at Hove.

Following an opening stand of 79 in 5.3 overs by Carlson and Will Smale (43 off 19 balls), Tom Bevan (34 off 17) helped add 72 in six.

Colin Ingram then weighed in with 40 off 19 balls but the visitors only managed to add 34 from their last four overs as Sussex skipper Tymal Mills took 4-29 and finished on 235-6, their third highest T20 score.

Facing such a target, Sussex needed something special at the start of their innings and Australian Daniel Hughes provided it with 62 not out off 34 balls before rain arrived during the 14th over with Sussex on 136-4.

The target was adjusted to 215 off 18 overs, and Hughes hit two sixes in three balls following the resumption before being caught off Chris Sole for 74.

With 32 needed from the last six balls, Nathan McAndrew and Danny Lamb fell to Dan Douthwaite and Sussex ended on 190-8 as Glamorgan won by 24 runs.

Bell-Drummond sets up Kent victory

Earlier in the day, Daniel Bell-Drummond hit 76 off 52 balls as Kent beat Gloucestershire by eight runs in a rain-affected game at Cheltenham.

The Spitfires were bowled out for 150 in 19.2 overs, with David Payne taking 4-25, but only five overs were possible in Gloucestershire's reply and their score of 29-2 meant defeat under the DLS calculations.

Kent were 13-3 in the third over but Bell-Drummond struck two sixes and 10 fours, sharing stands of 56 and 54 with Joey Evison (22) and Grant Stewart (21).

The rain arrived three overs into Gloucestershire's innings and although they managed to squeeze in two more, which saw Cameron Bancroft and James Bracey dismissed by Nathan Gilchrist before play was abandoned.

Sussex vs Hampshire, South Group (06:00 PM GMT)

In the Vitality Blast, Sussex Sharks secured their seventh victory out of ten games by defeating Hampshire by 22 runs at Hove. This leaves Hampshire with only two wins, and they would likely need to win all their remaining games to reach the quarter-finals.

Hampshire had a challenging start in their pursuit of 201 runs, losing two wickets in the initial two overs. Ben McDermott, an overseas player, was run out after hitting a single to Ollie Robinson at extra-cover. In the following over, Tom Prest was caught by Tom Clark off James Coles.

However, the Hampshire innings was revived by Vince and Joe Weatherley, who put together a quick-fire partnership of 59 runs in just six overs. Vince smashed Danny Lamb for a massive six over midwicket, while Weatherley, despite being dropped on 21 by Lamb, contributed 34 runs off 23 balls before being caught by Alsop off Jack Carson.

The dismissal of Vince for 32 by Lamb put Hampshire in a tough spot, but a fighting 50-run partnership in five overs between Toby Albert and Benny Howell kept them in the hunt. Despite maintaining the required run-rate, Hampshire kept losing wickets.

Albert was bowled by Coles while attempting a leg-side swipe, James Fuller was caught by Lamb off Coles, and Howell was run out due to a misunderstanding with Liam Dawson. Eventually, Hampshire were all out for 178 in 19.1 overs, falling 22 runs short of the target.

The Sussex innings was marked by a significant 83-run partnership in nine overs between Clark and Coles. The batting line-up maintained a high scoring rate throughout the innings on a good batting wicket.

Hampshire had a positive start, dismissing Daniel Hughes for a duck in the third over. However, Harrison Ward, Hughes’ aggressive opening partner, boosted the Sharks’ score to 57 in the powerplay with a brisk 39 off 20 balls. After Ward’s dismissal, Clark and Coles kept the momentum going. Coles scored 46 off 33 balls, and Clark added 37 off 26 balls.

Even after their dismissal, the scoring rate didn’t drop, with Tom Alsop scoring a quickfire 35 off 17 balls and Lamb adding 22 off 13. Chris Wood and Fuller were the standout bowlers for Hampshire on a challenging night.
