Wright admitted the anti-doping violations, albeit they were committed inadvertently and unknowingly because of his use of a contaminated supplement, which the Cricket Regulator accepted. The National-Anti Doping Panel agreed Wright had no intention to breach the Anti-Doping rules

Following a hearing in May between the Cricket Regulator and Chris Wright, today, Monday 1 July, it has been announced that Leicestershire bowler Wright has accepted a nine-month suspension following testing positive for a trace amount of a banned substance, Ostarine.

The 38-year-old’s suspension is backdated to October 2023, when he was provisionally suspended pending the investigation and proceedings, and he is therefore available for selection from 19 July, having already returned to training.

Leicestershire bowler, Chris Wright has released the following statement:

“I was shocked to find out that I had tested positive for trace amounts of a banned substance on a single occasion back in October 2023. I had been using a fruit supplement at the time, purchased from a well-known manufacturer, which had no sports performance-enhancing capability. I disclosed this fully on my doping control form before I provided a sample, as required, that returned the adverse result.

“I was extremely fortunate that with the help of scientific experts, I was able to identify that the supplement was contaminated with Ostarine, a synthetic substance that ought not be in any food product in the UK, and the Cricket Regulator accepted this. There has been no explanation from the supplement manufacturer as to how that came to be and, as the independent panel’s decision in my case shows, I did not intend to take such substance, nor could I have even known the supplement was contaminated with it.

“The panel found that I bore no significant fault and I am pleased this matter has been resolved so that I can resume playing soon, after what has been an extremely difficult and trying time for me and my family. I am back in training and looking forward to my full return.

“I would like to thank the PCA for their support during the period of my suspension as this matter was resolved. Their help, support and guidance has been invaluable. I would also like to thank Leicestershire CCC, in particular Claude Henderson and Alfonso Thomas, for their support during this difficult period. They have been extremely patient and supportive during the whole process and have been keen to get me back playing as soon as possible. Lastly, I want to thank my family. Their love and positivity has helped me immensely during what has also been a really challenging time for them. I will always be grateful.”

PCA Managing Director of Member Services, Ian Thomas, said:

“We are pleased Chris is now back in training and able to continue his career from 19th July. Sadly, Chris has been victim of a contamination case. It acts as a reminder to all our members of the danger of supplement usage. This could have prematurely ended Chris’ professional playing career.

“The stress on Chris and his family’s lives has been extreme since he was suspended in October 2023 and the PCA has worked closely with him and his legal team, in particular Craig Harris, to achieve the best possible outcome and ultimately, save his career.

“The PCA is extremely concerned at the lack of thresholds of banned substances, such as Ostarine in this case, providing a positive test, when it is clear there is no intent or scientific evidence to show athletes have genuinely taken banned substances. We are extremely concerned that these substances remain a risk when contaminating supplement or food produce.

“The PCA is working with the World Players’ Association in lobbying WADA for a full review on this.

“WADA play a vital role in ensuring a clean sport with zero tolerance to performance-enhancing drug usage. However, it is not fair or reasonable to place innocent athletes on suspensions and lengthy bans, when a trace amount of a substance confirms athletes are victims of contamination.”

Head of the World Players’ Association, Matthew Graham, said:

“WADA’s inconsistent approach to contaminated supplements is having a devastating and unnecessary impact on the livelihoods and wellbeing of athletes worldwide.

“Despite long having had the opportunity to change the Rules, it has failed to do so and it is lagging, rather than leading, as the regulator of the global anti-doping movement.

“The World Players' Association has tabled best practice solutions with WADA in relation to issues with contaminants which it should urgently implement if it is to rebuild athlete trust and confidence in the system.”

WORCESTERSHIRE BEAT DURHAM BY SIX WICKETS

Worcs 231-4 v Durham - target 231

Peter Siddle in for what might be his last over in England.

Ethan Brookes pushes forward to the first in defence. No run.

But there it is! A push down the ground beats the diving Ben Stokes and Brookes has the winning run.

He finishes unbeaten on 20, whiel Kashif Ali finishes with a superb unbeaten 76 off 118 balls.

It's been a terrific fightback win for the Pears after conceding a 72-run deficit in a low scoring first innings.

Stokes will head off for England duty with defeat, but in an incredibly difficult season, it's a first championship win and reason to cheer for Worcestershire.

Gibson to step down as Yorkshire head coach

Yorkshire first-team head coach Ottis Gibson is to leave the club at the end of the season.

The former West Indies fast bowler and England bowling coach joined Yorkshire in 2021, a year after the club was accused of institutional racism by Azeem Rafiq.

Yorkshire were relegated to the County Championship Division Two in 2022 and deducted 48 points by the England and Wales Cricket Board the following season over their handling of the Rafiq case.

"Despite the issues we have faced off the field, that inevitably spilt on to the playing side, I am pleased with the state of the squad, the development of our younger players and to be in contention to challenge for promotion," said Gibson.

“I'd like to thank all of my staff, players and the supporters that have been behind us in my time here and I wish Yorkshire all the very best going forward.”

Gibson, 55, has helped revive the team's Championship fortunes and the White Rose sit just four points outside the promotion spots with five games of the season left.

Yorkshire have begun the search for a successor.

“It’s been an absolute pleasure to work with Ottis," said Colin Graves, who was reinstated as club chairman this season.

“The work that Ottis has done in really difficult circumstances has been impressive, and he’ll leave with his head held high, having helped build some solid foundations, which we are seeing with performances this season."

Championship debut for Farhan Ahmed for Notts at 16 years of age earlier today. Been keeping one eye on this fella, since his call up to eng u19 WC this year at age of 15 and did well for England lions v Sri Lanka the other week taking a few wickets in the 2nd Inns. Plus being touted as having a higher ceiling than his older sibling Rehan. Today he became the Youngest ever county player for Notts.

Took 4 out the 5 Surrey wickets of the day. 3 of which play/played for England, in Rory burns who was set on 150+, Ben foakes+ will jacks. Took 2 in 2 balls too. hoping he gets his 5fer on debut.

Looks class at only 16, couple times got hit for a 6 and then went onto take a wicket in the same over. Doesn’t bowl many rubbish balls either

Bright future ahead for sure.

The Cricket Regulator provides details of the investigation into the pitch at Gloucestershire CCC

Gloucestershire CCC v Northamptonshire CCC

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) referred concerns raised in the above County Championship match to the Cricket Regulator. The match commenced at Bristol on Thursday 29th August 2024, but was initially suspended and then abandoned by the umpires on day 1.

The Cricket Regulator has conducted a full investigation, interviewing the match officials, captains, coaches, and grounds staff. The Regulator has viewed live stream footage and benefitted from an expert technical report.

The Cricket Regulator was satisfied, as a result of those enquiries, that the bounce was significantly uneven and dangerous to the players. The Cricket Regulator therefore fully supports the decisions taken by the match officials to abandon the match in the circumstances with which they were presented.

However, the Cricket Regulator is satisfied that Gloucestershire CCC have demonstrated that they sought, acting reasonably, to prepare the best quality pitch that they could for the match they were staging.

As a result, no charges will be brought on this occasion.

The Cricket Regulator does however expect Gloucestershire CCC to take steps to prevent issues of this nature arising in the future. The pitch advisor who investigated the pitch at Bristol will offer to provide support to Gloucestershire CCC moving forward.

Surrey win County Championship for third year running

Surrey have won a third straight County Championship title after Somerset lost at Lancashire.

Somerset had to win at Old Trafford to keep their hopes of a first ever county title alive heading into the last round of games, but they suffered a 168-run defeat on the final morning.

Surrey, who become champions for the 23rd time overall, beat Durham by 10 wickets on Thursday.

Lifting the trophy in 2022, 2023 and 2024 means this group of Surrey players have etched their name into County Championship immortality.

They have become the first team since Yorkshire 56 years ago to win three titles in succession.

Surrey won seven in a row from 1952 to 1958 having also won the very first three, and five of the first six, in the 1890s.

But they are still 10 short of Yorkshire, who have won 33 in total.

Surrey's squad depth tested

As you might expect from a squad packed with internationals, Surrey were without the services of numerous players at one point or another throughout the season.

They have used 23 players in this campaign, with only captain Rory Burns, fellow opener Dom Sibley and all-rounder Jordan Clark playing all 13 matches.

Burns has led the way with the bat, scoring three centuries and 1,057 runs – helped largely by his career-best 227 in a thumping win against Lancashire at The Oval in August.

Wicketkeeper Jamie Smith catapulted his way into England's Test side with some dazzling batting displays to average north of 56 in his nine matches, while Dan Lawrence has averaged just under 50 following his high-profile switch from Essex.

More than a dozen bowlers picked up wickets across the season - paceman Dan Worrall leading the way with 52 at an average of 16.15.

Clark showed why he is one of the most valuable assets in county cricket, taking 38 wickets along with scoring 467 runs down the order.

Cameron Steel set an incredible pace back in the spring, leading all bowlers in the first three rounds of the Championship with 20 wickets – though the leg-spinner has only picked up three since.

Next season will see a huge change in south London as director of cricket and Surrey legend Alec Stewart is leaving the role at the end of this campaign.

How big an effect that has on such a talented squad remains to be seen.

Starting salaries equalised across men’s and women’s professional cricket from 2025

Minimum starting salaries will be equalised across men’s and women’s professional domestic cricket from 2025.

The move will apply both at ‘Rookie’ level, which is being introduced into the women’s game for the first time and which will typically be a player’s first professional contract, and at ‘Senior Pro’ level for players who have established themselves in first teams.

It has also been agreed that the eight First Class Counties with Tier 1 status in next year’s revamped domestic women’s structure will have minimum squad sizes of 15 contracted players and that those FCCs are required to invest at least £500,000 on their player salary costs in 2025.
In addition, a salary cap of £800,000 per year has been agreed for FCCs with Tier 1 status.

The move to equalise starting salaries for male and female players represents the latest action taken as part of the restructuring of the women’s professional game. It follows the announcement earlier this month that the women’s and men’s professional white ball competitions will align from next season under the Vitality Blast and Metro Bank One Day Cup banners. The Kia Oval will host the inaugural Vitality Blast Women’s Finals Day on Sunday 27th July, with the first edition of the Metro Bank One Day Cup Women’s Final taking place at Utilita Bowl on Sunday 21st September.

The starting salaries and salary budget details have been approved by the ECB’s Professional Game Committee (PGC), which features representatives from FCCs, the Professional Cricketers’ Association (PCA) and the ECB.

Beth Barrett-Wild, Director of Women’s Professional Game, said: “Equalising starting salaries across our men’s and women’s professional domestic game is another positive step forward for women’s cricket in England and Wales.

“The changes we’ve made to the structure of women’s domestic cricket across the last nine months have been about producing a sustainable and viable product that’s attractive off the pitch, as well as being quality on it. As part of this, it’s important that our players are remunerated appropriately, and that cricket is seen not just as a viable career option for women, but an enticing one.

“Increasingly, every decision we take is about making cricket as attractive a sport for young girls as it is for boys. We know we still have a lot of work to do in this space. But we are moving at pace, and the news today represents another significant building block in the journey to gender equity in the game.”

PCA Director of Player Rights and Women’s Cricket, Emma Reid, said: “Working with the ECB and the professional game, we are really pleased to see equalised minimum salaries across the men’s and women’s domestic game from 2025.

“This is a big step towards reaching parity and a journey that the PCA is fully committed to achieving, but there is still further work to do. With the women’s teams under the umbrella of the First-Class Counties, the PCA will continue to lobby for parity across all areas of the professional game.”

Yorkshire dominate Northants to seal promotion

Yorkshire sealed promotion back to Division One of the County Championship after dominating day three against Northamptonshire.

Promotion rivals Middlesex were bowled out for 271 by Sussex, which left Yorkshire needing 350 in their first innings to secure second place in the table.

Adam Lyth (147) and James Wharton (162 not out) hit centuries as Yorkshire got the three batting bonus points they required and reached the close on 371-2.

Yorkshire were relegated to Division Two by one point in 2022, and then docked 48 points last season for their handling of the Azeem Rafiq racism scandal.

The Tykes will swap places with Roses rivals Lancashire after their relegation was confirmed with another poor batting display at Worcestershire.

Worcestershire County Cricket Club is heartbroken to announce the untimely passing of Josh Baker, who was aged only 20 years old

Josh turned professional with the Club in 2021 and quickly became a popular figure within the squad. More than his skills as a spin bowler, it was his vibrant spirit and infectious enthusiasm that endeared him to everyone he met. His warmth, kindness, and professionalism were remarkable, making him a true credit to his family and a loved member of our team.

Ashley Giles, Worcestershire’s Chief Executive Officer, shared his profound sadness, stating, “The news of Josh’s passing has left us all devastated.

“Josh was much more than a teammate; he was an integral part of our cricket family.

“We will all miss him terribly. All our love and prayers go out to Josh’s family and friends.”

During this profoundly difficult time, the Club is dedicated to supporting Josh’s family, friends, and colleagues. We are united in our grief and committed to honouring his memory in a manner befitting the remarkable person he was.

Plans to pay tribute to Josh will be made in consultation with his family and will remain private at this time. The Club, along with Josh’s family, requests the respect of privacy as we mourn this immense loss. No further comments will not be provided during this sensitive period.

The Club is deeply honoured to announce that a shirt number will be officially retired for the first time in the club’s history. The Number 33 shirt will be retired in memory of Josh Baker, who tragically passed away earlier this year.

As part of this tribute, a framed Baker 33 shirt will be permanently displayed in the Graeme Hick Pavilion, and a metal bench with Josh's locker plaque will be installed at the training nets—two lasting memorials to honour Josh’s contribution to Worcestershire.

Josh's parents, Paul and Lisa, have also been awarded Club Life Memberships, ensuring they will forever be a part of the Worcestershire family and that New Road will always remain a place of welcome and belonging for them.

Stewart to take new part-time role at Surrey

Surrey director of cricket Alec Stewart will take on a new part-time role at the club from January.

The former England captain, 61, will become the county champions' high-performance cricket advisor for a fixed number of days each year.

He is stepping down from his role as director of cricket in December after 11 years at the helm.

In that time Surrey have won the County Championship four times and 12 players have gone on to play for England.

The county will not appoint a new director of cricket to replace Stewart, who will work alongside head coach Gareth Batty and captain Rory Burns.

"Everyone knows my love of the club and what it means to me and therefore I’m very pleased that the club wanted me to continue in this new role that has been created," Stewart told the club website.

"With this new set up, I firmly believe that we can continue the success at Surrey that we’ve seen in recent times.

“I look forward to continuing my working relationship with Gareth, Rory and the team.”

Surrey chair Oli Slipper added: "We completely understood and accepted Alec’s decision to step back from his director of cricket role at the start of the season but we always wanted to retain his expertise and his impact at Surrey.

"We’ve had excellent conversations with Alec around a common ground that worked for him and for the club and I’m thrilled to say that we have found a role that works for all parties.”

Yorkshire have appointed former captain Anthony McGrath as their new head coach on a five-year deal

McGrath leaves Essex after nine seasons as assistant coach, head coach and, more recently, director of cricket.

He is returning to Headingley where he spent his entire playing career, winning the County Championship in 2001 and playing for England in four Tests and 14 One-Day Internationals.

McGrath takes over from Ottis Gibson, who guided the White Rose to promotion back into County Championship Division One last month.

He will officially take up his new position on 1 November.

"During the past nine years with Essex, Anthony has proved himself to be one of the most exciting and successful coaches in English cricket," said Yorkshire's interim chief executive officer, Sanjay Patel.

"He is renowned for his team's attractive, attacking cricket, supporting and developing world-class talent, and commitment to youth."

Former all-rounder McGrath, 49, played 242 first-class matches for Yorkshire and captained the side between 2008 and 2009.

As a middle-order batter, he was a key member of the side that ended the White Rose's 33-year wait to be crowned county champions again in 2001.

After retiring in 2012, he went on to become a coaching consultant for Yorkshire, but it is his work at Essex since then that has won him so many plaudits.

"I know the history of this great club and the passion of the members and supporters - and I am absolutely determined to develop a team capable of delivering the success they deserve," McGrath said, of his Yorkshire return.
