[PICTURES/VIDEOS] James Anderson retires from Test cricket with 704 wickets to his name

He is among the top 5 test cricketers to debut in this millennium.

Steve Smith is the greatest batter to debut this millennium.

Anderson is not the best bowler. He's the pure definition of Quantity over quality, he's still a goat player though.

Pant, Steve smith and Rabada shine as the best keeper, Batter and Bowler of this decade.

Ashwin and Jadeja aren't even in boot kicking distance of Lyon. 2 frauds I swear.

Kohli fell off, so he isn't in the race anymore.

In the era of home bullies, he and Ashwin were standouts but can’t take away their impact at home where they were genuine match winners and over a long period.

Given that Ashwin can bat too and has 6 tons total, he has an edge over Anderson as a test cricketer. Nevertheless, Anderson is a borderline great too and will be in strong contention for an all time England XI or second string England XI alongside Barnes, Trueman and Bedser.

Doubt he will get picked but it's interesting to see he can't let cricket out of his system despite his age.
He could be a smart pick for multiple franchises if they want to use him as a player/mentor/coach. He has a very low base price and could be a really good influence to have in the dressing room.

So, alright then

WHY HAS HE RETIRED WHEN HE IS 5 WICKETS FROM GOING PAST SHANE WARNE?

Same Ashwin who gets kicked out of the team every time India travels overseas?
He was only dropped in the England series. He played in all the South Africa, Australia and England tour before that. Occasionally getting dropped for an all round player like Jadeja shouldn’t be a problem because only one spinner can be in XI.

England's pace great James Anderson says he has listed himself for the upcoming IPL mega auction to enhance his knowledge about the game:

"There is still definitely something in me that thinks like I can still play. I have never done the IPL; I have never experienced it and I think for a number of reasons I feel like I have more to give as a player,"

"I have done a little bit of coaching since I have finished in the summer. I have been around the England team doing a bit of mentoring or whatever you like to call it,"

"I just think opening my eyes to something like that and experiencing it, sort of might help me grow my knowledge of the game and help further down the line,"

dont know for how long he will keep playing cricket... i cant bowl and over even at age of 38 lol

He is basically like Ric Flair, he will never retire; when you’re forced out like he was which is normally pretty unusual for a high profile senior cricketer from England, he is bound to keep playing until he has made peace with the end of his career. This unconditional love & passion for the game at his age is something though, his team mates who he played with would rather spend time with their family but Jimmy wants to be on the pitch, I think drugs are next if he suffers a serious injury.

James Anderson to play the 2025 season with Lancashire

Anderson – who made his debut for the Red Rose in 2001 - has committed to playing for Lancashire in both the Rothesay County Championship and Vitality Blast competitions during the new season.

The 42-year-old hasn’t played a competitive match since his 188th - and final - Test appearance against West Indies in July, as England’s all-time leading wicket-taker retired from international cricket.

Following discussions with the Club, Anderson will play on during the 2025 season and has put pen-to-paper on an initial season-long deal following the end of his ECB central contract.

Anderson’s most recent First-Class appearance for Lancashire came in June when he took 7 for 35 against Nottinghamshire in Southport while he will be set to make his first T20 appearance since 2014 this summer.

Speaking about the news, James Anderson said: “I am incredibly excited to sign this contract with Lancashire and resume playing professional cricket again next season.

“This Club has played a huge part in my life since I was a teenager, so to have the opportunity to wear the Red Rose again and help the side in both red and white ball cricket is one that I am really looking forward to.

“I have been working hard on keeping my fitness levels high and continuing to bowl regularly during my time as a coach with England throughout the winter, with the aim of being able to hit the ground running when the county season starts in April.

“I love playing at Emirates Old Trafford and to have the chance to walk out and bowl in front of our Members and supporters again this summer is going to be really special.”

Director of Cricket Performance Mark Chilton also commented: “We have been in open dialogue with Jimmy since his international retirement and our position has been clear from the start. It is fantastic news for all connected with the Club that he has chosen to continue his playing career with Lancashire.

“From speaking to Jimmy recently, it became clear that his desire to resume playing professional cricket was strengthening every day and he was just desperate to get back out on the park. As it stands, he is fully committed to the county season across both the County Championship and Vitality Blast this summer, and whilst we all recognise he will have other opportunities, he has made it clear playing is his first priority.

“To be able to share a dressing room with England’s all-time leading wicket taker, and one of cricket’s greatest players, is incredible for our squad and I’ve no doubt that our Members and supporters, and cricket fans around the world, will be equally as thrilled to watch Jimmy in action for Lancashire again next summer.”

Ex-England bowler Anderson enters draft for The Hundred

Legendary former England fast bowler James Anderson is aiming to play in The Hundred for the first time after entering the draft for this year's tournament.

The 42-year-old retired from Test cricket last year and has signed to play county cricket for Lancashire in the coming season.

England's all-time leading wicket-taker has now made himself available for The Hundred and will be part of the draft on 12 March.

Anderson entered the auction for this year's Indian Premier League, but went unsold.

He has not played white-ball cricket of any kind since a One-Day Cup semi-final for Lancashire in 2019.

Anderson's last T20 match was in a losing effort for the Red Rose in the 2014 final of the Blast against Warwickshire.

Like his long-time England new-ball partner Stuart Broad, Anderson has skipped The Hundred since its inception in 2021, mainly in order to preserve his fitness for Test cricket.

“Congratulations Sir Jimmy Anderson. This is a really well-deserved honour for an England legend who has given so much to our sport.
“Jimmy’s career has been marked by extraordinary achievements, not least in winning the Ashes four times and becoming England's all-time leading wicket-taker. His skill, determination, and sportsmanship have inspired millions of cricketers and fans alike, in England and around the world.

“This is fitting recognition for a true world-great who has given so much to the game on and off the field.”

Well deserved! India should also acknowledge their world great Ashwin in the same manner and give him knighthood too. :inti

This guy should be coaching now.. Playing county games is of no use to him and cricket overall. He should be teaching young boys, the skills that he has.

James Anderson made a remarkable return to four-day cricket with a statement performance, claiming two early wickets to put Lancashire in command against Derbyshire in their County Championship clash at Emirates Old Trafford on Saturday.

Playing his first red-ball match in nearly a year, the 42-year-old England seamer made an immediate impact with the new ball, striking twice in a fiery five-over spell.

He bowled Caleb Jewell for 16 with a trademark delivery that straightened off the seam, before dismissing David Lloyd for 27 with a sharp short ball that looped to the wicketkeeper off the glove.

Anderson ended with figures of 2 for 24 and, although he did not return for a second spell, his early burst set the tone for Lancashire’s dominance.

James Anderson marked his first T20 Blast game for almost 11 years with a career-best 3-17 and a catch as Lancashire Lightning beat Durham in a thrilling final-ball finish.

The ex-England paceman helped restrict Durham to 150-6, and with the scores level, Jack Blatherwick hit the final ball for a single as Lancashire won by four wickets.

One of the top 6 test cricketers to debut in this millennium, although he is safely #6 in that list and will go south only.

"When you’re at the games, you can really see that it does attract a lot of younger people and families and you can’t underestimate how important that is."
"I’m really looking forward to The Hundred.
It’s a competition I’ve really enjoyed watching."

Anderson to extend playing career past age of 44

England great James Anderson is set to extend his playing career past the age of 44 by signing a contract extension to play for Lancashire in 2026.

Seamer Anderson, England's all-time leading wicket-taker, agreed a year-long deal at Old Trafford for the 2025 season after retiring from international cricket in 2024.

He took 17 wickets in six County Championship matches, but his performances in the shortest form of the game were particularly impressive.

Playing T20 cricket for the first time in 10 years, Anderson took 20 wickets in Lancashire's run to Blast finals day, form that earned him a deal with Manchester Originals in The Hundred - his first experience of franchise cricket.

Anderson also captained Lancashire in the County Championship, a role he could resume in 2026.

The new deal will extend Anderson's professional career to 25 years, having made his debut for Lancashire in 2001. He will turn 44 in July of next year.

At the beginning of last season, Anderson suggested he could play three more years for Lancashire, which would take him to 2027 and the age of 45.

Anderson ended his legendary international career after the first Test against West Indies at Lord's in 2023 after being told he was no longer part of England's plans.

The pace bowler sits third on the all-time list of Test wicket-takers with 704, behind spinners Muttiah Muralitharan and Shane Warne.

In April it was announced Anderson will be knighted for services to cricket, an honour he is set to collect in the coming weeks.

In the aftermath of his international retirement Anderson served as bowling consultant for the England team, but stepped away from the role in the past summer to focus on playing for Lancashire.

Tim Southee stepped in, though the New Zealander is likely to only be available for the first Test of the upcoming Ashes series because of his own playing commitments.

On Thursday, Southee said he is "still working through" his Ashes involvement, with England still to confirm their coaching team for the tour of Australia.

James Anderson signs new Lancashire deal to extend playing career

James Anderson has signed a new one-year deal with Lancashire that is set to extend his playing career past his 44th birthday.

Anderson, England’s leading Test wicket-taker, retired from international cricket in 2024 but featured regularly for Lancashire in the County Championship and T20 Blast last season.

Having made his debut for the county in 2001, his fresh contract is set to extend his career past 25 years having amassed 1,143 first-class wickets to date, including 704 in Tests.

Anderson, who captained Lancashire on an interim basis last summer after Marcus Harris returned to Australia for the birth of his child, said he was pleased to continue his career.

“I’m absolutely delighted to sign for another year with Lancashire,” Anderson said. “This club has been my home since I was a teenager, and I still get the same buzz walking out at Old Trafford that I did when I made my debut.

“I’ve really enjoyed my cricket this year and still feel like I’ve got plenty to offer. I’m as hungry as ever to perform and contribute to the team’s success across both red and white ball cricket.

“We’ve got a really talented squad with great ambitions, and I’m looking forward to helping the group continue to develop, while supporting Crofty in his new role as we push for promotion and trophies in 2026.”

Anderson made his first T20 Blast appearances in more than a decade to help Lancashire reach Finals Day last year, and took 17 wickets in six County Championship appearances at an average of 24.

Lancashire finished fifth in Division Two after parting ways with head coach Dale Benkenstein early in the summer, and have since appointed former batter Steven Croft, two years Anderson’s junior, to the role.

Lancashire have appointed Sir James Anderson as captain of their Championship side for 2026.

Anderson led the team in five games last summer and had a winning record but he has now been given the job full-time after signing a new one-year contract.

Now 43, England's leading Test wicket-taker, has taken 1,143 wickets in 304 first-class matches since his debut in 2002.

Josh Bohannon has been named as vice-captain while Keaton Jennings remains captain of Lancashire's T20 Blast team.

Despite playing his 188th and final Test for England in 2024 at the age of 41 in July 2024, Anderson has carried on his county career.

After a turbulent summer at Emirates Old Trafford in which head coach Dale Benkenstein left mid-season and Jennings stepped down as red-ball captain, Anderson found himself standing in as skipper when chosen replacement Marcus Harris returned to Australia.

He led the team to two wins, two draws and a defeat in his five games in charge and lifted the mood after a dismal start.

Now he will work alongside new permanent head coach Steven Croft, who was in interim charge for the second half of last season and a former Red Rose team-mate of Anderson, as they aim to lead Lancashire back to Division One after relegation from the top flight in 2024.

"Captaining Lancashire for the first time last season was a huge privilege, and I'm honoured to take on the role full-time heading into the new season," Anderson told the club's website., external

"We've got a fantastic group of players, a great blend of youth and experience, and I'm excited about what we can achieve together with promotion back to Division One our number one priority."

Anderson should've played till this Ashes. He retired too early.

England are yet to replace Anderson and Broad.
