They are missing some key fielders and a good task master in Sarfaraz.

The CT squad’s games against South Africa onwards displayed some outstanding fielding by the guys.

These are some of the guys that come to mind and I thought they didn’t really let us down in the field. Shadab and Fakhar we’re setting some very good standards out there. Malik has hardly ever been a poor fielder in his career, and the rest of the batsmen were catching well. Barring that one big drop of Kohli in the Final from Azhar.

6 saving abilities, palming catching abilities in Pakistani boundary fielders

Have seen this numerous times where the Big 4 fielders have saved crucial match saving or match winning sixes on the boundary where they quickly realized that a catch is impossible therefore they end up making a very quick decision that instead of attempting the catch, they are going to palm the ball inside while jumping in the air ensuring that their foot doesn't touch the boundary rope or doesn't touch the ground etc. Even better they have palmed it back in the field of play to quickly enter back in the field of play to complete the catch themselves or to palm it to another fielder who completes the catch.

These fine points are the difference bw win and losing. Today Yasir Shahs lack of fitness, backwardness where he attempted a difficult catch and didn't try to palm the ball back to the field of play to save his side a crucial 4-5 runs cost his team the game.

Ramiz is tightening the screws when he saw that the PCB is spending Rs 2 billion on the domestic system and coaches and asked what is all this money being spent on if the domestic players have no idea or clue on how to play the ramp, scoop shot, reverse sweeps, reverse flicks and are not being taught anything on the modern T20 shots that you see from all the local Indian players in the IPL.

Back in New Zealand and now learning to sail a former Sydney to Hobart yacht, the man known as Beagle faced up to a few Back Chat deliveries.

Q: After Scotland, you became Pakistan fielding coach – some people think that job description is an oxymoron.

A: (Laughs) I bit off perhaps more than I could chew at one stage, I thought ‘S..t, what have I done?’. I always maintained with Waqar Younis as the bowling coach that he was the chauffeur, his arm out the window cruising down the road with all these fast bowlers in the back and another four limousines behind – while the fielding coach was the toughest job in Pakistan. We had a lot of success with a lot of frustration in between ... they’re not natural movers, and you can see why when you live there. They’re not brought up in the way we are – or we were – in the backyard, in the gully and running and jumping and learning how to fall. When the Pakistani fielders dived on the boundary, it was like a train crash.

One of the issues is that they’re currently fielding with incredible nerves. It’s why everytime the ball comes to them, it bounces of them, it’s because they’re so tense. The social media reactions and the fan reaction doesn’t help.

Pakistan's fielding standards overall are worse than minnow levels

Not a knee jerk reaction this but you could clearly see this in this years PSL where both the in fielding, out fielding, catching, boundary fielding, stopping singles and direct hits were very ordinary. You can see this at the international level as well. You can only imagine what the quality of fielding is like at the domestic level.

It was disgraceful to see Afghan batters take singles at will. Gurbaz literally toyed with Shadab in the inner circle and Shadab apparently is our top fielder.

India has significantly raised their game in this regard in terms of fitness baring Rohit Sharma, fielding and catching. Ravindra Jadeja is one of the best fielders in the world and with one of the top direct hit rates.

India has now moved away from foreign coaches, the foreign coaches they appointed in the past have fully trained up their local Indian coaches in domestic cricket and now India usually just appoints local coaches for their national team.

Pakistan had Steve Rixon in 2016-2018 and our fielding standards were right up there. Julian Fountain worked with the Pakistani team in 2012-2014. Surely these coaches taught the players and the nca coaches all the modern drills, coaching and fielding techniques but once these guys leave, the local coaches are unable to replicate their success with the players and the players return back to their bad habits and comfort zones.

Misbah complained that he tried very hard to emphasize fielding, fitness at the domestic level but he was met with a lot of resistance from domestic coaches and players who successfully lobbied with the PCB to have very laid back, chill standards in domestic cricket.

Ultimately the PCB is responsible for caving into player power. Pakistan's team will always be a lower tier team if it cannot uplift its fielding and fitness standards.

Its been the same for decades. You can't improve fielding by much when you play for PK, the hard yards are done in practice in domestic teams for years. It's a matter of a fielding culture along with good facilities and good technical coaches. We are lacking in all 3.
