Haris to captain Pakistan Shaheens’ white-ball side in Darwin

Mohammad Haris has been appointed as Pakistan Shaheens white-ball captain for the two 50-over matches and nine-team Top End T20 series to be played from 4-18 August in Darwin, Australia.

Haris last captained Pakistan Shaheens in the ACC Men’s Emerging Teams Asia Cup 2023 in Colombo. In the final, Pakistan Shaheens defeated India by 128 runs to successfully defend the title.

Pakistan Shaheens are already in Darwin for two four-day matches against Bangladesh ‘A’ from 19-22 July and 26-29 July. Shaheens’ 50-over matches will be against Northern Territory (NT) and Bangladesh ‘A’ on 4 and 6 August, respectively before the T20 series commences on 9 August. Pakistan Shaheens will feature in the Darwin series for the second successive year. Last year, NT Strike had defeated Shaheens in the Top End T20 Series final by 46 runs, before Pakistan Shaheens beat PNG by 224 runs and Northern Strike by 84 runs in the two One-day matches.

The point of sending a separate squad for just two 50 over matches is beyond me. If I was the think tank I would simply send one squad. If a player is only good for one format, then in my opinion that player is simply not good enough to be selected.

I'm surprised with the lack of pacers. You don't need that many spinners.

Akif Javed, Mohammad Ali or even one of the U19 bowlers would have been good options to take.

Why is Hasebullah here over Kamran Ghulam? Ik Kamran isn't an odi batter bit hurraira and Hasebullah > Kamran Ghulam? HAHAHAHAHAHA
Haseebullah has some decent potential as a wicket-keeper batter. I first saw him at 2022 U-19 WC, where he was one of the best batters in the entire tournament and the second or third highest run-scorer and have been impressed by him ever since. He has not gotten enough chances for Pakistan at A team level or even for Peshawar Zalmi to show what he is capable of.

Kamran Ghulam feels like someone who might be better for the longer format than the shorter ones. Been thoroughly unimpressed whenever I saw him play for Lahore Qalandars. But his FC numbers are nothing to scoff at.

Mohammad Ali definitely should have been in there. Not too sure about Akif Javed. There's Ubaid Shah as well who had a great U-19 WC. Also surprised to see Mehran Mumtaz excluded for some pretty raw and untested spinners.

I worry about Jahandad Khan. If the wind in Darwin is too high, he might just blow away with it. Seriously though, I hope someone introduces this guy to food.

He still needs work.

His pace in Australia will be worrying. He's not quick at all. He needs some bulking to do.

He is on the other extreme of the fitness spectrum. If he comes from a humble background I can understand it. But now that he is playing domestic and PSL, he really needs to start working on adding some size. Because right now he looks like the poster boy for malnutrition.

Shaheens set for red-ball challenge against Bangladesh A in Darwin

Sahibzada Farhan-led Pakistan Shaheens will take on Bangladesh ‘A’ in first of the two four-day matches in Darwin, Australia, on Friday, 19 July. The second four-day match will commence next Friday, 26 July, which will be followed by two One-Day matches on 4 and 6 August, and then the nine-team Top End T20 series from 9-18 August.

This is the first time since 2008 the two development sides of Pakistan and Bangladesh will play against each other. Sixteen years ago, Pakistan Academy side had toured Bangladesh and won both the matches by eight wickets against Bangladesh Academy.

Pakistan Shaheens arrived in Darwin on 15 July after undergoing a six-day intensive training camp at the Hanif Mohammad High-Performance Centre in Karachi under the supervision of Pakistan men’s red-ball head coach Jason Gillespie.

This will be Pakistan Shaheen’s third red-ball series in as many years, having toured Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe for a two four-day matches each in 2021 and 2023, respectively. On the last red-ball tour to Zimbabwe, Mehran Mumtaz was the standout bowler with 15 wickets, while Omair bin Yousuf had racked up 348 runs. Ali

Among the current squad, Haseebullah, Kamran Ghulam, Khurram Shahzad, Mehran Mumtaz, Mohammad Ali, Mohammad Huraira, Omair bin Yousuf and Shahnawaz Dahani have previously represented the Shaheens in red-ball cricket, while Ali, Khurram and Umar have also featured in Test matches for Pakistan.

The two four-day matches against Bangladesh ‘A’ in Darwin will be pivotal for the players as these will provide the much-needed experience and exposure to them ahead of a busy red-ball season, which includes Tests against Bangladesh, England, South Africa and West Indies from August 2024 to January 2025.

Sahibzada Farhan, Pakistan Shaheens captain:

“I’m delighted to be leading the Pakistan Shaheens side in the series and I look forward to an exciting challenge which the Bangladesh ‘A’ team poses in what will be new playing conditions for us.

“The team has prepared very well in the Karachi camp and the training sessions in Darwin have been helpful in acclimatising to the conditions. The presence of Jason Gillespie is a huge boost for the talented bunch of players and we are eager to prove our mettle in both the four-day matches.”

Pakistan Shaheens squad: Sahibzada Farhan (captain), Faisal Akram, Haseebullah, Kamran Ghulam, Kashif Ali, Khurram Shahzad, Mehran Mumtaz, Mohammad Ali, Mohammad Huraira, Mubasir Khan, Muhammad Irfan Khan, Omair Bin Yousuf, Shahnawaz Dahani, Tayyab Tahir and Umar Amin.

The Pakistan Shaheens white-ball captain Mohammad Haris and six other players will depart from Lahore to Darwin via Dubai tonight.

The players include Abdul Faseeh, Arafat Minhas, Jehandad Khan, Usman Khan, Arif Yaqoob, Mohammad Imran Junior, and captain Mohammad Haris.

Pakistan Shaheens' white-ball head coach Abdul Rahman will also accompany the players.

The Pakistan Shaheens will play two One-Day matches and a top-end T20 series in Darwin from August 4 to August 18.

Seems a bit strange Faseeh wasn't included in the 4 day matches vs Bangladesh A but is on the squad for the white ball format. Red ball seems to be his best format and he should easily be there over a player like Umar Amin who has zero future with Pakistan.

Is Shahnawaz Dahani still playing? Few years ago, he was considered the next great pace bowler from PSL.

26 now , that too officially, and nowhere near selection.

Mohammad Haris has shared some thoughts before Impending white ball leg of Darwin tour:

"Our preparation has been good for the last three days."

"The first focus is the ODI matches, we will try to do well in them."

"Top end T20 series is a big challenge. Will try to give best performance in it."

"Last year, he was the runner-up in the Top End series. This time we will cross one step more."

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Wednesday announced Abbas Afridi as the replacement for Pakistan Shaheens’ injured star, Kashif Ali, for the upcoming Top End T20 series, which begins on 9 August.

Kashif got injured during the second four-day match against Bangladesh A in Darwin and has now withdrawn from the squad as he will not be able to continue training for the upcoming matches.

Well Azam Khan can take some tips

Sahibzada Farhan is once again on top as the top scorer, and Jahandad Khan is impressive with the ball so far in the ongoing Top End T20 series

Captain of the Pakistan Shaheens White-ball Squad, Mohammad Haris, while speaking to PCB Media shed light on the Pakistan Shaheens' journey in the Top End series so far:

"The Top-End T20 series has been a great opportunity for us."

"We gave all the players a chance and gained different experiences. The head coach told us to perform well in this tournament to get a place in the national team."

"The Pakistan team is scheduled to tour Australia in November. Playing in this tournament was a great experience for me personally."

"The main purpose of this tournament is to prepare players for the national team in the future. We lost the final last year, and this time we want revenge."

Pakistan 2nd string T20I team lost against Adelaide boys in the Semi Finals. It was a proper thrashing.

This proves one thing at least that the standard of PSL is pretty low compared to other T20 leagues e.g. Big Bash, The Hundred, IPL and SA20.

A few key positive things from this tour:

We have seen our bowling depth and batting depth.

Pakistan Shaheens scored the highest team score, which is 202/6, against ACT Comets.

And the saddest thing is that no Pakistani batter or bowler is in the top 5 of the most run-scorers or most wicket-takers list of the Top-End T20 series.

And the saddest thing is that no Pakistani batter or bowler is in the top 5 of the most run-scorers or most wicket-takers list of the Top-End T20 series.
And even more sad thing is they are just aussies club cricketers and some of them not even regular looking at their appalling fitness
