KNIGHT RIDERS PULL OFF OUTSTANDING CHASE

Back to back sixes off the bat of Tim David at the start of the final over saw Trinbago Knight Riders defeat Guyana Amazon Warriors by five wickets in a pulsating match in Port of Spain. Both sides had periods of dominance in a mid-table clash that lived up to its billing as one of the standout fixtures of the 2024 Republic Bank Caribbean Premier League (CPL).

Kieron Pollard called the coin toss correctly and elected to field first at the Queens Park Oval and his side gave Dwayne Bravo a touching guard of honour in what could be the veteran all-rounder’s final game at the iconic ground having announced his CPL retirement earlier in the competition.

No inch was given with the ball though as the Warriors were reduced to 76/7 before Romario Shepherd posted a crucial half century from the lower order in order to rescue his side and put up a competitive total of 148/7.

The chase was a cagey and undulating affair, with the Knight Riders at 89/5 and struggling to find the boundary in the middle overs, the match very much hung in the balance. The 17th over proved the crucial one for the Knight Riders as Player of the Match Andre Russell smeared three sixes off the bowling of Nathan Sowter in order to haul down the target and allow David to finish the job at the last.

“The mindset was that I know I can hit sixes and that Tim David is a six-hitter as well. I told him that we had 24 balls, and we had to hit eight sixes.”

An emotional Russell also paid tribute to Dwayne Bravo in the moments after the match.

“Who I am today, has a lot to do with him. I am just happy to be part of this game. That's why it was an emotional celebration, he deserved that win... I think he'll shed a tear tonight. This one is for DJ Bravo."

The game was played in an intense but sporting spirit and was a high class affair with both teams looking to secure their qualification for the latter stages of the competition. The victory sees the Knight Riders well placed on eight points from five games, a fairytale end for Dwayne Bravo in the CPL still on the cards.

FALCONS KEEP PLAYOFF HOPES ALIVE

Another intriguing match full of incident in Port of Spain saw the previous evening’s winners, Trinbago Knight Riders lose to Antigua & Barbuda Falcons by six wickets with an over to spare.

The win sees the Falcons keep their slim chances of progression alive and also gave them double bragging rights over the Knight Riders in this year’s Republic Bank Caribbean Premier League (CPL).

The Falcons won the toss and chose to field first, canny bowling restricted the Knight Riders to a below par 134/8, Kieron Pollard's 37-ball 47 giving the home side a shot in the arm on a dewy night that made run scoring quite tricky. Last evening’s man of the hour Tim David chipped in with 25 off 20 balls to help haul his side to a competitive total.

Justin Greaves then played a Player of the Match innings to give the Falcons their third victory in this year’s competition. Compiling a patient 46 off 48 balls he then retired himself at the death to allow a fresh, and bigger hitting teammate to finish the job. The somewhat risky decision ultimately paid off for the visitors.

Hassan Khan played a vital cameo with 36 off 20 deliveries and Imad Wasim was there at the end to see his side home in an eventful 19th over – in shades of the 2019 World Cup final - a deflection off the bat as the batter’s returned for the second run saw the ball run over the boundary rope and six runs awarded to the batting side. 18 runs were plundered off the Josh Little over in total with Fabian Allen nudging the winning runs to midwicket to seal the victory and keep the Falcons flying in this year’s CPL.

“To win at Queen's Park Oval is a special thing” said a beaming Greaves in the moments after the match. “We haven't had a great season but to beat TKR twice is good. We’re just happy with how things panned out. To get the win against Trinidad in Trinidad, their fortress, feels good. We have to take one game at a time. You never know..."

The Knight Riders finish the evening still in second position in the table and the Falcons ended it with a little hope that they could still salvage something from their 2024 CPL campaign.

A contentious moment sparked controversy during the Falcons' chase, specifically on the second delivery of the tenth over. Following Hassan Khan's dismissal for 36, the Falcons required 67 runs from 65 balls. Imad Wasim, facing his first ball, played a defensive shot but was struck on the pads by Sunil Narine's well-pitched delivery. Umpire Christopher Taylor initially ruled the appeal not out, but Narine's confidence prompted TKR captain Kieron Pollard to review.

Ball-tracking technology suggested the ball would hit the leg stump, indicating a potential golden duck for Imad Wasim. However, he insisted on an inside edge, supported by replays on the big screen. As Imad Wasim began to walk off, he was recalled due to further review.

Third umpire Nigel Duguid initially overturned the not-out decision but later reverted to not-out, acknowledging the edge. This reversal ignited heated discussions between Pollard, the on-field umpires, and TKR coach Phil Simmons, causing a 12-minute delay and visible frustration within the TKR camp.

WARRIORS VICTORIOUS AT PROVIDENCE

Guyana Amazon Warriors inflicted a seventh defeat on the St Kitts & Nevis Patriots in this year’s Republic Bank Caribbean Premier League (CPL) running out winners by 30 runs in Providence to boost their own chances of progression in this year’s competition.

Electing to field first the Patriots restricted their opponents to 137/8, Ashmead Nedd impressing with four wickets including bagging both openers Tim Robinson and Kevin Sinclair for ducks. Tabraiz Shamsi’s flight and guile kept the Warriors tied down too, only 13 runs were scored off his left-arm wrist spin and the South African removed both Moeen Ali and Shimron Hetmyer.

Hetmyer took a liking to the rest of the Patriots bowling however, a decisive and destructive innings of 63 off just 33 balls saw him scoop Player of the Match.

Despite a dogged 49 off 46 balls from Evin Lewis at the top of the order the Patriots never truly looked like pulling off the victory. Moeen Ali caused all sorts of problems with the ball and the Patriots left themselves with too many runs to chase in the latter half of the innings and a the chance to pull off only their second victory in the competition eluded them.

Rilee Rossouw's run-out in the 15th over seemed to extinguish the last vestiges of hope and Shamar Joseph was clinical for the Warriors, a rapid spell of fast bowling saw him end up with 3/9 in just 2.3 overs.

“Words can't explain how great it is to play at home, knowing you have the support of everyone - it's just amazing,” said Hetmyer after the match. He was particularly impressed with the performance of Joseph. “I think it was only a matter of time for him to start picking wickets. He is an exceptional bowler; we have already seen it in his short career so far. He is really exciting and all he has to do is just keep doing what he is doing and sky is the limit for him.”

A solid performance sees the Guyana Amazon Warriors keep their hopes of retaining the title they won last year very much alive.

WARRIORS DEFEAT FALCONS TO SECURE PLAYOFF SPOT

Reigning champions Guyana Amazon Warriors defeated Antigua & Barbuda Falcons by 27 runs to book a place in the latter stages of the 2024 Republic Bank Caribbean Premier League (CPL). The defeat for the Falcons means they are now eliminated and the final four for this year's event is now set.

The Falcons won the toss and elected to field first, in restricting the Warriors to 135/7 they gave themselves a real chance of pulling off a surprise victory. The Falcons bowling attack shared the wickets around and did well to restrict the Warriors batting card, only eventual Player of the Match Moeen Ali managed to really do any damage with the bat in hand for Warriors.

The recently retired England international struck 42 off 33 balls including three fours and the same number of sixes before a nifty run out by Joshua James put an end to his innings and kept the target a manageable one.

The Falcons batting unit got plenty of starts but the side eventually suffered for the fact that none were converted into a meaningful score. Wickets fell in a steady stream and were shared around by the Warriors – Ali picking up 3/9 with his wily off spin and South African seamer Dwayne Pretorious pocketing three wickets from just 2.5 overs.

It was a sparkling performance in both disciplines from Moeen Ali who described it as an ‘honour’ to play for the Warriors adding “the crowd is unbelievable at home, it surprised me nicely!”

The defeat sees the end of the road in the 2024 competition for the Falcons, they had their moments but with only three wins in ten games they depart with plenty to ponder.

The Warriors look a dangerous outfit in all facets of the game and were cheered on raucously by their home crowd who were left at the end of the evening with every reason to believe a title defence is firmly on the cards.

The 2024 CPL Playoffs will feature the Guyana Amazon Warriors, Barbados Royals, Saint Lucia Kings and the Trinbago Knight Riders.

Barbados Royals vs Saint Lucia Kings, 24th Match

St Lucia Kings 162/3

Barbados Royals (20 overs T:163) 149/8

Kings won by 13 runs

The four teams to make the playoffs of the 2024 Republic Bank Caribbean Premier League (CPL) may have been decided but that did not stop the Barbados Royals and St Lucia Kings slugging it out in Providence with bragging rights and momentum all to be played for.

Both sides have booked their place in the 2024 CPL Playoffs along with Guyana Amazon Warriors and the Trinbago Knight Riders and there was only NRR to split them ahead of the match with both sides winning five of their seven matches and losing two to sit on ten points apiece.

Royals captain Rovman Powell won the toss and elected to field first but his bowlers struggled to make as much impact as they’ve been used to throughout the tournament so far. Nevertheless, Royals wicketkeeper Quinton de Kock showcased his lightning quick hands to get rid of Faf du Plessis and Roston Chase, both stumped off Maharaj and Theekshana respectively as the Kings chipped away.

Johnson Charles played some muscular sweep shots to clear the boundary rope, top scoring with 53 runs off 42 balls, he was supported by Ackeem Auguste with 35 off 32 before the latter had to retire hurt. Tim Seifert then struck a late flurry of boundaries to get the Kings to the highest total scored at Providence in this year’s competition – 162/3 would take some chasing.

The Royals stellar batting card got off to a flier in response – reaching 56 without loss before Alzarri Joseph got rid of the dangerous de Kock for 22 off 13 balls. Kadeem Alleyne had actually been the main aggressor for the Royals, particularly in the third over when he smashed three consecutive sixes off Roston Chase. The Kings then struck back by picking up both Rahkeem Cornwall and Rovman Powell cheaply.

Royals reached 100/4 in the 13th over before Noor Ahmed stitched together a maiden to an increasingly frustrated David Miller in the 14th which left the Royals needing to hit 63 runs off the last 36 balls.

Miller atoned for his sluggish strike rate by bunting two boundaries in the next over but was caught at cover by du Plessis for 21 off 22 balls trying to find the fence again as the runs per over required climbed ever higher.

Alick Athanaze and Nyeem Young both fell in the latter stages to leave Royals needing 21 off the last over with Jason Holder and Maheesh Theekshana at the crease. Theekshana got a single off the first ball to get Holder on strike, an edge for four followed to keep Royals in the hunt. David Wiese then got the crucial breakthrough as Holder holed out to Khary Pierre on the long off boundary. Wiese held his nerve at the last to see Kings claim the victory by 13 runs.

POORAN TAKES KNIGHT RIDERS HOME

A high scoring affair in the second match of the day in the 2024 Republic Bank Caribbean Premier League (CPL) saw Trinbago Knight Riders end the season for the St Kitts & Nevis Patriots with a seven wicket defeat.

After winning their first match of the competition the Patriots have lost every game since, but this defeat in Tarouba seemed particularly cruel after they posted a sizeable 193/4 with the bat after being inserted at the toss.

Captain Andre Fletcher led from the front with a brilliant innings of 93 from 61 balls that included shots all around the ground and six sixes struck into the crowd. Fletcher was denied a deserved century, falling short by seven runs when Chris Jordan had him caught by the bucket hands of Kieron Pollard on the long off boundary.

Jordan was the pick of the Knight Riders bowlers and also gave a glimpse of his own velcro hands by pulling off an impressive diving catch off his own bowling when Kyle Mayers mis-timed a short ball and offered up a sharp return chance.

The Knight Riders were clinical in their chase, Jason Roy blitzing 64 runs from 34 deliveries at the top of the order before Nicholas Pooran finished the job in some style, striking a flat six down the ground - his seventh of the evening – to finish the match.

Pooran was Player of the Match, hitting thirteen boundaries to finish undefeated on 93* off just 43 deliveries, albeit he was aided by some sloppy catching that saw him put down on a handful of occasions in the field.

The Patriots will rue the dropped catches and the missed opportunity to finish a tough campaign with a victory over one of the favourite sides. The Knight Riders will benefit from a Net Run Rate boost having hauled down the sizeable target with nine balls remaining, they now sit on ten points alongside Barbados Royals and Guyana Amazon Warriors.

Kings vs Trinbago, 26th Match at Tarouba

St Lucia Kings 218/6

Trinbago Knight Riders (17.5/20 ov, T:219) 138

Kings won by 80 runs

Saint Lucia Kings laid down an imposing marker to the other three sides to make the 2024 Republic Bank Caribbean Premier League (CPL) playoffs as they racked up 218 runs off their twenty overs and reduced the Trinbago Knight Riders to 138/9 to win by 80 runs and remain top of the latest standings.

It could have been a heavier defeat than it was for the Knight Riders as Kings Captain Faf Du Plessis and his opening partner Johnson Charles smashed the ball to all parts in Tarouba. A 145 run opening partnership saw the ball flying to the boundary multiple times, which perhaps also explained why the first innings took over two hours to complete.

The Knight Riders were made to do plenty of leather chasing and had to wait until the thirteenth over before they could ‘celebrate’ a wicket – Charles departing for a magnificent 89 – caught by a juggling Chris Jordan on the long on boundary off a Jayden Seales slower ball.

Du Plessis made a half century of his own and after he was out - caught on the leg side fence off the impressive Kieron Pollard - Tim Seifert hit 30 off 17 balls to get the Kings over 200. The Kings scoring rate did slow up towards the end, with just 45 runs coming off the last five overs.

Pollard was the pick of the Knight Riders bowlers and came to fore admirably in the absence of Sunil Narine, 4/38 in the circumstances constituted excellent figures and meant his side had a chance of chasing down a still sizeable target.

The Knight Riders never really got close. Losing regular wickets in the first half of their innings saw them reduced to 56/6 as Noor Ahmed’s left arm wrist spin picked up the engine room of Tim David, Akeal Hossein and Andre Russell without any damage incurred.

Jason Roy stayed resolute and started to chip away at the total but when he was brilliantly caught and bowled by Shadrack Descarte in the 14th over and Chris Jordan was removed by David Wiese in the following over the game had gone out of sight for the Knight Riders.

Match 27 - Guyana Amazon Warriors vs Barbados Royals

HOPE AND HETMYER TAKE WARRIORS TO VICTORY

Guyana Amazon Warriors helped their chances of securing a top two finish in the 2024 Republic Bank Caribbean Premier League (CPL) by inflicting a 47 run defeat on Barbados Royals. The Royals would have been hopeful for a top of the table finish too given their earlier form in the competition but a third defeat for them in recent matches means they may have to settle for third or fourth place and a harder path to the title.

Royals captain Rovman Powell won the toss on what looked a fantastic batting wicket and opted to insert the opposition. The pitch was conducive to stroke-play and despite the early loss of Rahmanullah Gurbaz the Warriors cashed in, posting an imposing 219/8 off their 20 overs.

At one point, when Shai Hope and Shimron Hetmyer were in full flow and displaying some mouth-watering strokeplay it very much looked like a bigger total would be in the offing for the Warriors but after the two experienced hands fell before the end (for 71 off 37 balls and 57 off 34 balls respectively) the Royals managed to peg the defending champions back in the final five overs. Maheesh Theeskhana the pick of the Royals bowlers with an economical and wicket-taking spell of 3/15.

So consistent in the earlier stages of the competition, the Royals’ batting card failed to fire in response. Moeen Ali pinned talisman Quinton de Kock lbw for 35 and Imran Tahir sprinting off into the outfield in customary celebration with the key wicket of Powell.

David Miller offered some resistance in the Royals middle order and played some audacious strokes at the back end to take him to a battling half century but wickets continuously fell all around him as the Warriors spin attack used the scoreboard pressure to their advantage and piled on the pain. A score of 172/9 at the close meant the Royals finished comfortably short and the Warriors were never in trouble.

Moeen Ali continued his fine tournament with the ball by claiming 2/16 and fellow spinner Gudakesh Motie was more expensive but pocketed three wickets. The Warriors are finding form in both departments as the competition heads into its final phase.

David Miller’s pyrotechnics once the result had effectively been decided meant the final scorecard wasn’t as grim as it could have been for the Royals but they have plenty to put right after a chastening defeat to their fellow title hopefuls.

TKR STAY IN HUNT FOR TOP TWO FINISH

As the 2024 Republic Bank Caribbean Premier League (CPL) heads towards its final week of competition it was another disappointing night for Barbados Royals who suffered their fourth defeat in a row at the hands of fellow title hopefuls Trinbago Knight Riders.

The Knight Riders comfortable 30 run victory sees them leapfrog the Royals into third position in the table on 12 points with a game in hand. The Royals finish fourth in the final qualifying spot despite being the team to beat at the start of the competition.

Royals captain Rovman Powell won the toss and elected to field first at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Tarouba, Trinidad and after Theekshana bowled Jason Roy for a duck and Jason Holder bagged Shaqkere Parris caught behind by Quinton de Kock for just five the Royals were well placed. Nicholas Pooran hit 27 off 15 balls before offering another catch to de Kock off Naveen-ul-Haq to leave the Knight Riders stuttering on 35/3 off four overs.

The TKR engine room came to their rescue, a score of 175/7 chalked up courtesy of calm heads and clinical hitting as Kieron Pollard (42 off 27) Andre Russell (31 off 12) and Keacy Carty (32 off 34) held the innings together and got the home side to a competitive score.

It proved 30 runs to many for the Royals. Dangerman de Kock was one of three wickets snared early by the impressive Akeal Hosein who finished with 3/15 from his set of four overs which took the sting out of the Royals batting card and earned the darting spinner the Player of the Match.

Alick Athanze kept the Royals in with a sniff with a well made 44 off 33 balls but once he had departed to the English combo of bowler Chris Jordan and catcher Jason Roy, captain Powell fell for 18 and Jason Holder for just 4 the target remained out of reach as wickets fell and the scoreboard pressure told.

David Miller tried in vain to get the Royals close with some late order boundary hitting but his 30 off 15 balls wasn’t enough to take the game down to the wire.

POORAN INSPIRES TKR WIN BUT WARRIORS FINISH TOP

The 30th and final regular fixture of this year’s Republic Bank Caribbean Premier League (CPL) saw reigning champions Guyana Amazon Warriors suffer a heavy 74 run defeat at the hands of Trinbago Knight Riders on home turf in Providence. Despite this loss the Amazon Warriors finish top of the table and will face the Saint Lucia Kings in Qualifier 1 on 2 October. The Knight Riders will face Barbados in the Eliminator match on 1 October.

Winning the toss and electing to bat first the Knight Riders innings got off to a rocky start as Warriors captain Imran Tahir bowled Shaqkere Parris with a perfect googly that completely bamboozled the batter and scudded into the stumps. Tahir wheeled away in celebration but it was to be the last thing his side would have to celebrate for a while on what turned out to be a bruising night.

Nicholas Pooran played one of the finest innings in the history of the CPL by striking a majestic century for the Knight Riders, finishing with 101 off just 59 balls with nine fours and eight sixes to his name. Jason Roy played the anchor role with 34 runs off 26 balls and watched on in awe as Pooran dispatched the Warriors stellar bowling line up to all parts of the Providence stadium.

After Player of the Match Pooran was eventually dismissed at the end of the 16th over – caught behind by Shai Hope off the bowling of Shamar Joseph – Knight Riders captain Kieron Pollard (19 off 13) and Keacy Carty (27 off 13) ensured the visitors made it past the 200 mark and set a challenging total of 211/5 for the Warriors to chase.

Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Shai Hope both got starts but failed to go on and make a decisive big score as the Warriors chase failed to ignite in the face of scoreboard pressure and smart bowling. Waqar Salamkeil’s left arm wrist spin and Terrance Hinds’ medium pace seamers proved the undoing of the home side, the middle overs seeing a bundle of wickets fall as each bowler picked up three wickets apiece.

When Moeen Ali fell with the Warriors score on 88-8 it looked as if the 2023 CPL champions were going to be handed an emphatic 100 plus run defeat but some late order resistance from Gudakesh Motie and Captain Tahir saw them up to a final total of 137 all out.

Nevertheless, it was a chastening 74 run defeat for the Warriors after looking so dominant in their previous four matches and a huge confidence boost to the Knight Riders ahead of next week’s tournament run in.

RECORD YEAR FOR EMERGING PLAYER APPEARANCES IN CPL

The 2024 Republic Bank Caribbean Premier League (CPL) has seen a record number of appearances by Emerging Players. Across the group stage there have been 44 appearances by these up and coming cricketers, the most that there has ever been during a CPL season.

To qualify for the Emerging Player category the cricketer must be under 23 at the start of the current calendar year and have not appeared for the senior West Indies side. Teams are obliged to give the two players in this category a combined total of five appearances but during the 2024 tournament a number of the Emerging Players have become first team regulars.

There have been some excellent performances from these young players with Jewel Andrew scoring a half century for the Antigua & Barbuda Falcons, Shaqkere Parris made 57 for Trinbago Knight Riders against the Saint Lucia Kings and Ackeem Auguste making consistent contributions for the Kings.

Nathan Edward picked up a couple of important wickets for the Trinbago Knight Riders and Ashmead Nedd took a career best 4/25 for the St Kitts & Nevis Patriots against the Guyana Amazon Warriors.

Michael Hall, CPL’s Tournament Operations Director, said: “It is very pleasing to see these players not only being given the chance at this level, but also for them to perform consistently enough to get playing time beyond the mandatory requirement. For the Emerging Players class of 2024 to go past the appearance quota by almost 50% is great news for CPL and for cricket in the Caribbean.”

The 2024 Emerging Players cohort is as follows:

Antigua & Barbuda Falcons: Jewel Andrew and Joshua James

MILLER POWERS ROYALS ONWARDS

An unfortunate floodlight failure at the National Stadium in Providence, Guyana saw a reduced over match in the Eliminator game of the 2024 Republic Bank Caribbean Premier League (CPL).

A two hour delay whilst the light was fixed saw the Barbados Royals set a revised target of 60 runs in five overs. The Royals made short work of the chase, David Miller almost single-handedly getting his side over the line with four balls to spare by hitting a brutal 17 ball fifty that included five sixes and three fours.

Trinbago Knight Riders won the toss and batted first, amassing 168/3 off 19.1 overs before the lights went out. Nicholas Pooran scored a masterful 91 not out off 60 balls to anchor their efforts with captain Kieron Pollard and Andre Russell adding support at the end of the innings with 17 and 20 runs respectively. Jason Roy assisted Pooran from the top of the order with 25 off 17 balls after the early dismissal of Sunil Narine – bowled by Theekshana off the third ball of the match.

Although not picking up many wickets, the Royals bowled well to limit the damage and keep the Knight Riders in check, a target of 163 would be chaseable if their own batting card fired.

After it looked like their 2024 campaign was going to be cruelly derailed by the floodlight failure, the Royals would have been mightily relieved to get back on the park and have the chance to keep their destiny in their own hands.

Their revised chase was a frenetic and exhilarating affair. Sunil Narine cleaned up Quinton de Kock with the third ball of the first over, a beautifully flighted delivery that clipped the bails and left the batter bamboozled. The ball before had been clobbered for four runs by de Kock and David Miller hit the next delivery after the wicket for a towering six over midwicket. It was a sign of things to come.

Miller came into his own in the shortened chase, cutting Chris Jordan away for four over point before slog sweeping Narine for a huge 106 metre six off the next over. With two overs left the Royals needed 25 runs to progress. Miller kept his cool, consecutive fours off overpitched deliveries from Jordan were followed by a full toss by the beleaguered bowler that was clubbed for six down the ground. The penultimate over costing the Knight Riders 17 runs.

With 8 needed off the last over Miller smashed back-to-back sixes off Terence Hinds to finish the match in emphatic fashion, claiming the Player of the Match award and booking the Barbados Royals a place in the second eliminator after a dramatic night in Guyana.

STATEMENT WITH REGARD TO ELIMINATOR MATCH AT CPL 2024

At 20:58 on Tuesday 1 October, during the Eliminator match between the Barbados Royals and the Trinbago Knight Riders, there was a loss of power to all three floodlight towers on the eastern side of the Guyana National Stadium, Providence, causing an interruption in play. At the time of the interruption, 19.1 overs of the Knight Riders innings had been completed. Within half an hour, two of the three towers were functioning. In the opinion of the on-field field umpires, Deighton Butler and Nigel Duguid the lighting level made it unsafe for play to continue.

Nevertheless, given the importance of the game, both teams were offered the opportunity to continue playing in the reduced lighting. While the Barbados Royals were willing to continue, the Trinbago Knight Riders, as was their right, did not want to carry on playing in conditions which the umpires had decided were unsafe.

Initially, a cut-off time of 22:52 for the start of a minimum 5 over innings, which is required to constitute a game, was communicated to broadcast. This was subsequently revised to 23:01 to account for the time allowed for the interval between innings which had not been initially included.

Eventually, power was restored to the third floodlight tower at 22:51 and, after making an allowance for enough time for the lamps to achieve maximum brightness, the match officials made the decision to re-start the game at 23:01, ensuring that a result could be achieved on the field of play. The ICC approved DLS calculator, which is utilized at the innings break of every CPL game, and which is the universally accepted method used to determine revised targets in an interrupted game was applied, and a target of 60 from the 5 overs was generated.

Reon King, CWI senior Match Referee, who was in charge of the Playing Control Team on the night, said: “The Republic Bank Caribbean Premier League playing conditions allow for one hour extra time to be added to a game before overs are lost, and a failure of floodlights is treated in exactly the way as an interruption for rain. The priority for the match officials team is always for the safety of players, but they also work to try and see if the outcome of a game, one way or another, can be achieved on the field of play. This was the focus applied during the Eliminator match.”

Match 32 - Guyana Amazon Warriors vs Saint Lucia Kings

KINGS ADVANCE TO CPL FINAL

Saint Lucia Kings booked their place in the 2024 Republic Bank Caribbean Premier League (CPL) Final with a 15 run victory over reigning champions Guyana Amazon Warriors in a weather curtailed match at the Guyana National Stadium in Providence.

The Warriors will now take on Barbados Royals on Friday with the winner of that match contesting the final with Kings on Sunday.

Winning the toss and batting first proved a wise decision given the forecast and Faf du Plessis led from the front once more for his side. An opening stand of 124 runs between himself and Johnson Charles ensured the Kings posted a challenging total of 198/5 off their twenty overs.

Charles was starting to eye up a three figure score when he was well caught on the long on boundary by Keemo Paul off the bowling of Moeen Ali for 79 off 45 deliveries. Du Plessis then fell for a well-made half century of his own, the Kings captain forced to depart after Rahmanullah Gurbaz held on to an exceptional catch from a firmly hit shot down the ground off Shamar Joseph.

The Warriors bowlers did well to keep the score down to a manageable target with Moeen Ali once again being the standout performer with the ball, figures of 2/24 off his four overs showcasing all his experience.

In response, the Warriors had reached 106/4 at the end of the 13th over before the persistent drizzle turned into heavier rain and the players were taken off the field by the umpires. Unfortunately for the 2023 CPL champions it then did not relent meaning that they were behind the required run rate on DLS calculations when the match was called off over an hour later.

Still requiring 92 runs off the remaining 42 deliveries when the weather intervened the Warriors would have still fancied their chances of hauling down the total with a well set Shimron Hetmyer looking dangerous with 37 off 18 balls and with Moeen Ali having just joined him.

Hetmyer had just opened his shoulders to hit four sixes in quick succession off Noor Ahmad and Roston Chase, despite this injection of runs the Warriors were comfortably behind the required DLS score of 121 when the rain decisively intervened.

The Warriors will have a chance of setting up a re-match with a victory of Barbados Royals in the final eliminator match on Friday evening. Saint Lucia Kings will await either side in Sunday’s final with an inaugural CPL title very much in their sights.

Match 33 - Guyana Amazon Warriors vs Barbados Royals

WARRIORS REACH FINAL WITH WIN OVER ROYALS

Reigning champions Guyana Amazon Warriors booked their spot in the 2024 Republic Bank Caribbean Premier League (CPL) final by inflicting an eight wicket defeat over Barbados Royals in Providence.

Imran Tahir won the toss and decided to field first, himself and his fellow bowlers working as a well oiled unit to restrict and run through the Royals who eventually posted a total of 148 runs.

The Royals batting card was full of starts but no one grabbed the innings by the scruff of the neck and went on to post a decisive score as wickets continued to fall. Quinton de Kock chipped a simple caught and bowled chance back to Gudakesh Motie and Romario Shepherd picked up the key wicket of Rahkeem Cornwall with a reviewed lbw decision that went the Warriors way.

Cornwall was looking in fine form and the reversal of the on field decision put the Royals under real pressure that they never really recovered from.

The Warriors bowling line up shared the wickets between them, Shepherd finishing with 3/35 and Moeen Ali once again bowling a decisive spell with the ball in hand, spearing in 13 dot balls and picking up two wickets to end with 2/24 for his efforts. Some chaotic running in the scrabble for late runs also saw two run outs as the Royals innings spluttered to a close.

The Warriors set about the total with confidence and managed to win the match and secure their place in Sunday's final inside 15 overs. Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Moeen Ali flayed the ball to all parts at the top of the order, Gurbaz departing for a rapid 40 off 18 balls with four sixes and Ali finishing unbeaten on 44 off 35 balls to cap a fine all round performance in a crucial match.

Shai Hope made a classy half century before being yorked by Ramon Simmonds with just two runs needed for victory, Player of the Match Moeen Ali clipping the decisive single off his pads just a couple of balls later to land the telling blow.

The winning run struck with 33 balls left unused saw the Barbados Royals title hopes left in tatters and Guyana Amazon Warriors cruising to a comprehensive victory that gives them an opportunity to land back to back CPL titles. Saint Lucia Kings lie in wait in what promises to be an enthralling end to the 2024 competition.

KINGS WIN MAIDEN CPL TITLE

Aaron Jones was the star of a thrilling 2024 Republic Bank Caribbean Premier League (CPL) final, a nerveless display with the bat powered the Saint Lucia Kings to the title with a six wicket victory over Guyana Amazon Warriors with 11 balls remaining.

After winning the toss and electing to chase it looked as if the trophy was slipping out of reach from Faf du Plessis’ outfit, defending champions Warriors posted 138/8 off their 20 overs and in response Kings slipped to 67/4 at the end of the 14th over – still requiring 72 runs from 36 balls, the run rate and the pressure mounting.

Aaron Jones then opened his shoulders in brilliant fashion, slamming Moeen Ali for 27 runs off the 16th over with an array of strokes that cleared the boundary and gave the Kings a much needed shot in the arm. Jones never looked back and more huge sixes followed over the next few overs as the Warriors bowlers couldn’t contain him.

Dwayne Pretorious’ 17th over was hit for 20 runs and Romario Shepherd’s 18th for 18 to leave one run needed off 12 balls in a remarkable turnaround, the once vociferous home crowd in Providence stunned by Jones’ highwire assault.

Warriors captain Imran Tahir sent down a leg-side wide to provide the coup de grace, Jones finishing unbeaten on 48 off 31 balls and Roston Chase with 39 off 22 as Saint Lucia Kings claimed their first CPL title in memorable fashion.

In the moments after securing the trophy the two men were clearly overjoyed that they could be there at the end to get their side over the line for the inaugural CPL title.

"It means a lot” said Roston Chase, adding “I’ve been in two finals before and I made up my mind this morning…"

"We knew playing in the final is going to be a challenge” said Aaron Jones, “But we came out on top. I think of myself as a match-winner".

It was a chastening evening for Moeen Ali who bowled the match turning 16th over, the English all-rounder had a splendid tournament with the ball, particularly with his economy rate and so it was with a grim irony that he should be the one to be clubbed for 27 runs off six balls as the match lurched away from the Warriors and towards the Kings.

Another CPL season comes to end with the Saint Lucia Kings well deserving victors, lifting the trophy for the very first time in what were memorable scenes at the Providence stadium.
