Parsons blasts SA U19s to emphatic eight-wicket win in final World Cup warm-up

Tuesday, 14 January 2020

The South Africa under-19s sealed a convincing eight-wicket triumph over their Nigerian counterparts in the teams’ second ICC under-19 Cricket World Cup warm-up match in Pretoria on Tuesday.

Bryce Parsons dispatched nine fours and a six on his way to a thrilling 48 off 28 balls, as the home side chased down Nigeria’s total of 61 all out with a mammoth 41.5 overs to spare.

The junior Proteas captain also took two wickets for four runs during his seven overs in an impressive all-round performance.

After winning the toss and electing to set a score, Nigeria battled hard in the opening nine overs before SA U19s’ Mondli Khumalo (2/19) removed both openers in quick succession.

That was the sign of things to come, as Parsons, Merrick Brett (2/7), Odirile Modimokoane (2/2) and Tiaan van Vuuren (2/10) teamed up to dismiss their African compatriots within 37 overs.

In reply, despite losing a wicket in the first over following a mix-up between the opening batters, South Africa made light work of the chase.

Coming in at three, Parsons proceeded to smash the ball to all parts of the Assupol Tuks Oval before going out at the start of the 7th over, two runs short of his half-century.

Luke Beaufort (9*) and Andrew Louw (0) got the host nation over the line as they wrapped up their preparations ahead of the global showpiece set to get underway from 17 January – 09 February.

South Africa and Afghanistan prepare for tournament opener with warm-up wins

South Africa and Afghanistan warmed up for the opening game of the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup with victories in their final preparation games before the curtain-raiser.

Shafiqullah Ghafari of Afghanistan in action during the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup warm up match between England and Afghanistan at Mandela Cricket Oval on January 14, 2020 in Hammanskraal, South Africa.

The two nations will face off in the very first game of South Africa 2020 on January 17, with the hosts concluding their pre-tournament plans with victory over Nigeria while Afghanistan upset former winners England.

There was also day three success for Pakistan, who overcame Sri Lanka in Pretoria, and India thanks to their narrow win over Zimbabwe in Johannesburg.

Afghanistan show their mettle with victory over England

Afghanistan stunned England in their U19 World Cup warm-up match with an impressive 21-run victory at Mandela Oval, Hammanskraal.

England were bowled out for 184 in their chase of 206, with Abdul Rahman dismissing Kasey Aldridge for the final wicket of the match with 16 balls remaining.

Noor Ahmad and Shafiqullah Ghafari picked up two wickets apiece as England, winners in 1998 when the tournament was last held in South Africa, stuttered to a surprise defeat with Jack Haynes (29) and Ben Charlesworth (26) top scoring.

Afghanistan – who finished fourth in the last edition in 2018 – won the toss earlier and opted to bat, edging their way to 205 for eight off their 50 overs.

Rahman (54) and wicket-keeper Mohammad Ishaq (43 not out) produced a workmanlike batting approach that eventually turned out to be key in anchoring the innings.

Abid Mohammadi, the lower-order batsman, made a late cameo that elevated the total past 200, scoring 26 runs from 19 balls faced towards the death, with his tally containing two boundaries and a six.

Blake Cullen had him caught off the final ball before the interval break, and with it, an impressive showing for the Middlesex seamer who took three for 25 from seven overs.

However, the Afghani bowling attack held their nerve as they put on a perfect fightback that frustrated England's chase.

They did just enough to help the country claim a famous victory over their more fancied opponents, and a timely confidence booster ahead of their tournament opener in a few days’ time.

Resilience leads Pakistan to four-wicket victory

Pakistan showed great character to chase down a target of 216 against Sri Lanka to end their preparations on a strong note in Pretoria.

Sri Lanka won the toss and elected to bat first but lost wickets early in their effort. Tahir Hussain, who finished with fine figures of four for 41, struck with the new ball, to peg the islanders back in the early stages.

It was left to Sonal Dinusha (68 from 87 balls) and skipper Nipun Dananjaya (55 from 88 balls) to bring a semblance of calm to proceedings. Abbas Afridi (two for 26) and Aamir Ali (two for 30) kept on striking, to see Sri Lanka eventually bowled out for 215, in 49.3 overs.

The target was still a test, given Sri Lanka's varied attack, but an opening partnership of 61 between Haider Ali (33) and Muhammad Shehzad (24) sent Pakistan on their way.

Fahad Munir (51 off 86 balls) then chalked up a most sensible half-century, before retiring with the end in sight. Mohammad Haris (43) spanked five fours from 36 balls, to ensure that the drama was sucked out of proceedings, while Qasim Akram's 29 off 28 balls got them very close.

It was left to Irfan Khan and Afridi to see them home, with 28 balls to spare.

Zimbabwe give India stern test in St Sithians

Four-time champions India were run close by Zimbabwe but held their nerve when it mattered most to wrap up a 23-run win at St Sithians College.

India, considered one of the favourites for the tournament, compiled 295 in 49.4 overs, after winning the toss and batting first. The total was heavily supplemented by two fine half-centuries by Tilak Sharma, who retired on 73, and the in-form Priyam Garg, who also made 73.

They set India on their way before Kumar Kushagra (36) and AV Ankolekar (31) kept the score ticking at close to a run-a-ball throughout the innings.

For the Zimbabweans, Nkosilathi Nungu claimed two for 41 in nine tidy overs, while off-spinner Wesley Madhevere was tight in his ten overs of off-spin, garnering one for 49.

In response, the Southern Africans made a proper fist of the chase, underlining their credentials as a wily underdog in the tournament.

Dane Schadendorf smashed a bruising 81 off 74 balls, with six sixes and five boundaries. Luke Oldknow was excellent support, with 66 from 86 balls, as Zimbabwe took the chase deep into the afternoon.

Milton Shumba had earlier struck a half-century upfront, repelling a probing spell of three for 33 by Kartik Tyagi, who returned to get the final scalp at the death. Sushant Mishra's two for 28 in eight overs kept Zimbabwe in check, and they simply ran out of ammunition, being bowled out for 272 in 48.4 overs.

It was a proud chase, and was an ideal tune-up for both teams before the tournament starts in earnest.

Parsons blasts South Africa to victory over Nigeria

Captain Bryce Parsons led from the front as South Africa sealed a convincing eight-wicket triumph over Nigeria to end their U19 World Cup warm-up matches in style.

Parsons dispatched nine fours and a six on his way to a thrilling 48 off 28 balls, as the home side chased down Nigeria’s total of 61 all out with a mammoth 41.5 overs to spare.

The junior Proteas captain also took two wickets for four runs during his seven overs in an impressive all-round performance in Pretoria.

After winning the toss and electing to bat, Nigeria battled hard in the opening nine overs before South Africa’s Mondli Khumalo (two for 19) removed both openers in quick succession.

That was the sign of things to come, as Parsons, Merrick Brett (two for seven), Odirile Modimokoane (two for two) and Tiaan van Vuuren (two for ten) teamed up to dismiss their continental rivals within 37 overs.

In reply, despite losing a wicket in the first over following a mix-up between the opening batters, South Africa made light work of the chase.

Coming in at three, Parsons proceeded to smash the ball to all parts of the Tuks Oval before falling short of his half-century, though it didn’t stop his nation winning by eight wickets.

South Africa’s next match will be the opening game of the ICC U19 World Cup, set to take on Afghanistan in Kimberley on January 17 in an exciting tournament opener.

Smith and Anderson hit superb tons in final U19 World Cup warm-up matches

West Indies’ Kevlon Anderson and Kai Smith of the United Arab Emirates scored superb centuries to bring the curtain down on the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup warm-up matches.

Jesse Tashkoff of New Zealand hits the ball towards the boundary, as Mohammad Akbar Ali of Bangladesh looks on during the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup warm up match between New Zealand and Bangladesh at St John's College on January 15, 2020.
Anderson struck a brilliant 101 not out as his country defeat Scotland in their final preparation match, while UAE comfortably got the better of Japan thanks to Smith’s unbeaten 102.

There were also wins for New Zealand and Australia, over Bangladesh and Canada respectively, with all eyes now turning to Kimberley where South Africa face Afghanistan in the tournament opener on 17 January.

Anderson century seals West Indies win over Scotland

Anderson smashed a thrilling ton as West Indies condemned Scotland to a 126-run defeat in their final warm-up fixture in Irene, Pretoria.

Anderson, the talented young batsman from Guyana, was 101 not out in a swashbuckling knock that came off 72 balls, with the Windies posting 322 for six from their 50 overs.

He was ably supported by Kimani Melius (67) and Leonardo Julien (65) for the mammoth total.

The Windies innings contained two strong stands as Melius and Julien combined for a century for the second wicket; with Anderson dominating the fifth-wicket partnership batting alongside Daniel Beckford (27).

Scotland, in response, were bowled out for 196 with Uzzair Shah (49) and Ben Davidson (34) top scoring.

They were never able to put the pressure on in a chase where they needed to score at nearly seven runs to an over in order to reach the target.

Joshua James was the pick of the bowlers for the islanders with his three for 22 from six overs.

The trio of Matthew Patrick, Ashmead Nedd and Avinash Mahabirsingh provided great support with two wickets each.

Windies take on Australia in their Group B tournament opener on Saturday in Kimberley, while Scotland will face Pakistan (Group C) in Potchefstroom on Sunday.

Smith puts Japan to the sword

A destructive century by Kai Smith and an equally enterprising 98 by Vriitya Aravind saw the UAE charge to a massive win over plucky Japan in Dobsonville.

UAE had already fired a warning shot to the rest of the competition by defeating New Zealand in their previous warm-up and didn't hesitate to opt to bat first against Japan.

Aravind started the carnage, drilling 98 from 104 deliveries, and adding 94 for the first wicket with captain Aryan Lakra (31).

A pair of Ashley Thurgate strikes with the ball then brought Smith to the crease, and he went about changing the game by carting four maximums and nine boundaries on his way to 102 off just 69 balls.

It blew Japan away, and a late flurry from Alishan Sharafu (58) and Osama Hassan saw UAE swell to 382 for six.

It was always going to be a tough ask for the young Japanese side, but Neel Date (39) and Kazumasa Takahashi (29) showed good resolve at the crease.

Regular wickets fell, however, with spinner Lakra helping himself to four scalps for just 15 runs, as the net closed in on Japan who were eventually bowled out for 129.

The final analysis said Japan lost by 258 runs, but they again learnt some priceless lessons out in the middle.

Black Caps back to winning ways with Bangladesh victory

New Zealand got their South Africa 2020 preparations back on track with a solid victory over Bangladesh, in their final warm-up match in Johannesburg.

The young Black Caps had been stunned earlier in the week by the UAE, who pipped them by one wicket in a thrilling preparation contest.

Playing on Rice Field, at St John's College, New Zealand won the toss and elected to field first, determined to right their wrongs with ball in hand.

Joey Field set the tone with an opening burst that set the Tigers right back, sharing four for 35 in seven overs.

Bangladesh were under big pressure, slipping to 23 for five, before Towhid Hridoy (36) and Akbar Ali (23) came together.

They at least got the score beyond 100, though Aditya Ashok then took three for 35, as Bangladesh were bowled out for 112 in 29 overs.

In response, Rhys Mariu started confidently, with a 41-ball 32, to get New Zealand on their way.

Though there was a middle-order wobble, thanks to Tanzid Hasan's three for 30, Kiwi skipper Jesse Tashkoff's 41 not out saw his side home by four wickets, with more than 20 overs to spare.

Incredible Davies knock helps Australia beat Canada

Oliver Davies’ world-class innings of 94 from just 27 balls helped Australia beat Canada by nine wickets in their final warm-up match of South Africa 2020.

Chasing a target of 115 to win, the Australians reached 117 with the loss just one wicket in 46 balls.

Leading the carnage was Davies, who came in at number three to smash 11 sixes and six boundaries in a wonderful innings that saw shots aplenty at St Sithians College.

Earlier, Canada's innings stuttered throughout before they bowled out 41.5 overs.

Wicket-keeper Eshan Sensarma opened the innings and top scored with a dogged 27 runs that came off 74 balls, with wickets tumbling around him as Australian bowlers Liam Scott, Todd Murphy and Corey Kelly picked up two apiece.

However, few would have expected the chase to last just 7.4 overs as Oliver made easy work of Canada's bowling after having entered the fray in the second over.

The Australians take on West Indies in their Group B tournament opener in Kimberley on Saturday while Canada will be taking on the United Arab Emirates in Bloemfontein in their first match in Group D.
