Wanindu Hasaranga impressed against West Indies with the ball, but also showed good composure with the bat In finishing situations.

He would have been in the test squad to face England but has been ruled out due to injury.

Thought I would make a thread on him as I think he is a talented player for Sri Lanka and deserves some praise.

He has talent but still a long way to go.

SL hasn't found players to replace the previous legends. It may take a while.

He looks a very good prospect. His innings in first odi against West Indies was very impressive and stayed calm even when wicket were falling and run rate increasing.
his bowling also has made impact in games he has played so a proper all rounder

Good player. It's about time that the franchises notice him and he starts featuring in T20 leagues across the globe. He can play the role of a very handy T20 player.

Having a great LPL. He is like the Sri Lankan Sjadab, except he is better at batting at the death.

Another impressive series for him despite Sri Lanka going down. Does not get talked about enough. Probably because he plays for Sri Lanka .

Hasaranga is good, Srilanka have a very very weak bowling attack, their batting actually isn't that bad. They literally have a zero bowling attack.

I liked Oshada Fernando as well but he seems to have fallen off a bit now.

Should be batting batting 4 in T20s and 6 in ODIs. Dont understand why Arthur can't see his batting is being underutilised

Wanindu Hasaranga is the all-rounder Shadab Khan fans think he is.

One of the very few bright sparks of SL cricket today.

Didn't wanna say that Shadab part as some people would have got upset at the reality Hasaranga is the better player right now.

Did anyone here actually watch the series? He went wicketless in the first two ODIs and picked up one wicket in the last game. In every game he was woefully ineffective at breaking partnerships and letting the Windies run away with the game.

He's a decent all-rounder and bailed Sri Lanka out with an rapidfire 80 the other day. But he is nothing special. In any way. Much superior spinners than him get found out fairly quickly. And though he has been highly effective in T20s I don't see a player like him having much longevity as a reliable front-line spinner. Could be a T20 specialist though.

From my very limited knowledge or understanding of this beautiful game....

This guy bowls too short as a leggie.

Looked like he should be batting higher than number 8.

Looked like he knows how to bat which cannot be said for some batting higher than him.

He is on his way to become an LOI star. Won't be surprised if he gets picked in franchise t20s even ipl.

His batting has a bit of Moeen Ali in it and bowling's a bit like Adil Rashid's.

Good bowler and a pretty decent batsman.

Sri Lanka will need to produce better batsmen and fast bowlers if they want to rise the rankings again.

He did well. Took a lot of wickets and was quite economical.

First proper spinner for Sri Lanka since retirement of Herath.

To be honest, Hasaranga is better than Shadab based on what I have seen.

Sri Lanka have been very impressive and will become a world force again soon. Nissanka, Asalanka, Hasaranga, Chameera all look very good,

Definitely.

I think Sri Lanka currently have better spinners than Pakistan.

Sri Lanka's main weakness is their pace attack.

Outstanding consistency during the T20 World Cup.

Great control and a fantastic googly.

Wonderful bowler.

I think Hasaranga can be Sri Lanka's key player during the 2023 World Cup (host is India).

His spin can be vital for Sri Lanka.

Wanindu Hasaranga has been exceptional in the recent past. The core players that Sri Lanka could build around for the next WC is excellent.

This would be my personal SL LOI XI, once the players have served their suspensions:

1. Nissanka
2. Gunathalika/Dhanajaya
3. Kusal Mendis
4. Asalanka
5. Avishka Fernando
6. Dickwella/Rajapaska
7. Hasaranga
8. Dasun Shanaka
9. Chameera
10. Theekshana
11. Binura Fernando/Lahiru Kumara

An exciting time for SL peeps.

I reckon if SL can get rid of this Mickey Arthur / Grant Flower combo and hire a coaching staff with winning mentality, they could become a top 4 cricketing nation again.

Avishka should be opening the batting. It feels to me he is more of an opener batsman.
In 50 over cricket, Nissanka can play at 3.

Congrats Mickey Arthur for developing Hasaranga into some force

He was not the perfect coach; but man he was instrumental in developing few outstanding cricketers as a coach (and persisted with them even during their failures)

ABD, Steyn, Duminy, Starc, Cummins, Steve Smith, Lyon (he was a dud before 2012, and totally turned it around from 2013 onwards), Babar, Shaheen, Hasan Ali,
and now Hasaranga

Lets see what Pakistan has planned for him in the final.

In the previous match they played him as if he was Shane Warne.

Lets see what Pakistan has planned for him in the final.

In the previous match they played him as if he was Shane Warne.

As they seem totally ineffective at milking him for 6 an over, they will try to attack him but as Babar found that aint easy if you dont pick him. Go back to rule no 1- sweep and sweep again if your not sure which way its going

It's funny that everybody lost their minds after Pakistan got swept by Sri Lanka with what was being referred to as their B/C team in T20's back in 2019 and it was a very similar squad and Hasaranga taking them by storm.

Pakistan have lost 4 T20's in a row against Sri Lanka thanks to Hasaranga. Hopefully they put an end to that streak tomorrow.

Man of the series in Asia cup 2022. Comments after match:

"When I went out to bat at 60/5, Bhanuka and me planned to get to 150, which was a good total. I told him that I would play my role and play my shots. In the first few overs, the ball swung, but when I batted, the wicket was really good. I love to bowl in the subcontinent. I look to bowl at the stumps in these conditions and that is why I am successful. I try to bowl tight and bowl dot balls. Our boys did a great job throughout the tournament especially after our loss against Afghanistan."

Sri Lankan great Muttiah Muralitharan on Thursday sounded a warning to the teams ahead of next month's T20 World Cup, saying they will have to be careful against Wanindu Hasaranga as the mystery spinner would be a threat on Australian pitches. Hasaranga took nine wickets to power his team to the Asia Cup title win and Muralitharan said he would be one to watch out for during the T20 World Cup. "He's a great T20 bowler. Last 2-3 years, he's done really well. He's a young guy," Muralitharan told reporters in an interaction on the eve of the second edition of the Legends League Cricket.

"In Australia, definitely the leg spinner will have more chances then finger spinners. He will be a difficult opponent to bat against. You have to be very careful against him."

Talking about Sri Lanka's Asia Cup campaign, Muralitharan said: "We had a very young team in the past few years, we played best cricket in the Asia Cup. They looked like the best team and deserved to win the Asia Cup." Sri Lanka will have to take the qualifier route in the T20 World Cup where they are clubbed with Namibia, UAE and the Netherlands. Top two teams will make the main round -- Super 12.

"We are looking forward to the World Cup as well. They are formidable but unfortunately we have to play the qualifiers to get into the main round," he said.

"The past few years we didn't play well to get a straight entry. But at the moment I'm very, very confident of doing well in the World Cup as well."

Muralitharan, who is the highest wicket-taker in Tests with 800 scalps, said Australian leg-spin legend Shane Warne was "better" than him.

Warne died of heart attack while he was on a vacation with his friends in Thailand earlier in March this year. "I think he was better than me, when I was playing I looked up to him and learnt things from him. We all miss him," an emotional Muralitharan said.

Sri Lanka all-rounder Wanindu Hasaranga took last year's ICC Men's T20 World Cup by storm and played a major role in helping his side win the recent Asia Cup – and it was just the latest step in the rise of the island nation’s latest superstar.

Speaking on The ICC Review, Sri Lanka legend Mahela Jayawardena spoke about Hasaranga’s meteoric rise, shedding light on his early years and growing maturity while also drawing a link with another Sri Lankan great, Lasith Malinga.

Leadership qualities shining through

Hasaranga was touted to hit the highs this year, especially after wowing the crowds during the T20 World Cup in 2021 when he picked up 16 wickets to finish as the top wicket-taker at the tournament.

He has carried on that form in 2022, playing a crucial role in Sri Lanka's success at the Asia Cup, his contributions with the bat also gaining heft. The all-rounder was the second-highest wicket-taker in the tournament with nine scalps and also chipped in with 66 runs, including an important 36 and 3/27 in the final against Pakistan.

Fearless Asia Cup champions hungry for more glory - Sri Lanka team preview
He was named Player of the Tournament, and it was the latest milestone in Hasaranga’s burgeoning reputation as a player for the big occasion. All of which has convinced Jayawardena that Hasaranga has leadership qualities to go with all that firepower.

"In the last 12 months, he has shown how mature he is – not just as a bowler but with the bat as well. In tough situations, he has really come and delivered," Jayawardena told host Sanjana Ganesan on The ICC Review.

"But as a leader in that group, even if he doesn’t have the title as the vice-captain or the captain or anything like that, but underneath all of that he has become a leader who all the young guys look up to."

A maturing talent set to blossom

Jayawardena has known Hasaranga since he was a 19-year-old, thanks to former team-mate Chaturanga de Silva, Hasaranga’s brother.

"To be honest, his brother was actually playing cricket while we were playing cricket as well," Jayawardena said. "So Wanindu was much younger, was playing Under-19 cricket when we were finishing off and then he started playing first-class cricket.

"We always knew that this guy can bowl and bat, but we never knew the quality of bowler he could turn out to be. I mean initially, he didn’t have the accuracy but he always had some X-factor about him, how he went about things.

"That’s where Sri Lanka invested in him when he was quite young, especially in white-ball cricket."

Parallels with Lasith Malinga

Jayawardena sees quite a lot of similarities between Hasaranga and Malinga – both started off shy before blossoming into cornerstones of the Sri Lankan side.

"The way he has blossomed … he’s also from down south, quite close to where Lasith was (Galle) and they have similar mannerisms," Jayawardena noted.

"The way they both came out, they started their careers quietly – you know, sat in the corner of the dressing room – and little by little they grew. The hairstyles change, the tattoos came out and the whole thing.

"It (Hasaranga’s development) is quite similar to how Lasith became who Lasith was, and that’s how I see the way Wanindu has blossomed as a player."

The biggest similarity between the two is their fierce competitiveness, according to Jayawardena.

"The most important thing is, once they cross the field, like Lasith, he is a competitor – that’s what I love about him," Jayawardena said.

Hasaranga has now become one of the premier all-rounders in the shortest format of the game. He has risen to No.3 in the MRF Tyres ICC Men’s T20I Rankings for bowlers, and No.4 in the all-rounders' T20I rankings.

And at only 25, the potential is limitless.

"He is still young and (there is) a lot of cricket in front of him," Jayawardena said.

"So long as he understands what needs to be done and be competitive out there, that’s the most important thing."

The entire Australian team just butchered Hasaranga. A bit like how Morgan thrashed Rashid Khan in the 2019 world cup. His tricks are not working here at Perth. Darters seem to be getting more out of it.

Australian pitches are not as helpful for spinners as subcontinent or UAE pitches.Australia wanted to target him and went after him it paid off.I believe if your fearless(not wreckless) and target a particular bowler then with some luck you can score. If you are too scared of losing your wicket then you can get out without scoring many runs.

Basic rule in Australia. Be it is T20 or ODI or Tests. You have to be very aggressive. If you think of surviving you are done.

6 more wickets since the AUS game and highest wicket taker so far with 15 in 8 matches. Clearly can develop into an all-conditions player. Potential limited overs ATG

Wanindu Hasaranga made history on Sunday by becoming only the second bowler in the history of One Day International (ODI) cricket to achieve three consecutive five-wicket hauls.

This remarkable feat occurred during the ICC World Cup 2023 qualifying match between Sri Lanka and Ireland.

This accomplishment comes 33 years after Pakistani fast bowler Waqar Younis achieved the same feat in 1990 against New Zealand and West Indies.

Waqar's outstanding performances included figures of 5/11 and 5/16 against New Zealand, as well as 5/52 against the West Indies.

I saw a tweet today. He took

Last 10 ODI innings of Hasranga

Sri Lanka bowling all-rounder Wanindu Hasaranga retires from Test cricket to extend his limited-overs playing career.

Hasaranga, 26, made his Test debut in December 2020 against South Africa, and since then has featured in only four Tests.

His last Test was against Bangladesh at home, more than two years ago in April 2021.

Hasaranga informed Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) of his decision to retire on Tuesday, 15 August and the board accepted it.

"We will accept his decision and are confident that Hasaranga will be a vital part of our white-ball program going forward," said Mr. Ashley De Silva, CEO of Sri Lanka Cricket.

Hasaranga has been Sri Lanka's white-ball specialist since his ODI debut in 2017 and is a vital part of their limited-overs set-up.

The all-rounder has featured in 48 ODIs and 58 T20Is for his country, picking up a total of 158 wickets and scoring 1365 runs.

Recently, Hasaranga was pivotal to Sri Lanka qualifying for the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2023 after they emerged victorious in the Qualifier at Zimbabwe, with Hasaranga finishing as the top wicket-taker in the tournament with 22 scalps.

Shameful. Cricket boards should ban players who decide to retire from test cricket at such a young age. Money, resources and time is invested in these cricketers.

Such is the direction of the tide these days, even BazBall can't stop it.

No news about the injury of this man. I think he might not be available for the world cup after missing out on asia cup.

This is Big below for srilanka as he is most valuable player for them

As per reports, Wanindu Hasaranga is set to take over the captaincy from Dasun Shanaka for Sri Lanka in T20Is.

Wanindu Hasaranga has been confirmed as Sri Lanka's T20I captain for Zimbabwe's Tour of Sri Lanka.

Wanindu Hasaranga makes a sensational comeback to international cricket against Zimbabwe in 3rd ODI.

W Hasaranga (c) bowled superbly today against Zimbabwe in the third T20I ,with a bowing figure of 4/15 in his four overs.

Fifty for skipper Wanindu Hasaranga in just 24 balls against Afghanistan in 1st T20I

Whenever Hasaranga plays like this either in T20 or ODI, it keeps me thinking why RCB did not use him as a proper allrounder.

Captain Hasaranga takes Sri Lanka from 55-4 to 160 all out. He scored 67 runs off 32 balls.

Wanindu Hasaranga recently joined an elite club, becoming the second Sri Lankan player to achieve 100 wickets in men's T20Is. His remarkable feat was accomplished during the 2nd T20I against Afghanistan, and what's even more impressive is that he is now the second-quickest to reach this milestone, with just 63 matches, trailing only behind Afghanistan's Rashid Khan.

Sri Lanka's prime all-rounder, Wanindu Hasaranga, delivered once again, claiming 4 wickets for 45 runs in 10 overs against Bangladesh in the 2nd ODI. However, it's disappointing that he has decided to retire from Test cricket.

Sri Lanka's Wanindu Hasaranga came out of Test retirement and was named in the squad for the two-match Test series against Bangladesh.

Wanindu Hasaranga, who announced his retirement from Test cricket last year, has returned to the fold for the ICC World Test Championship series against Bangladesh starting March 22.

Sri Lanka all-rounder Wanindu Hasaranga has been suspended for Bangladesh's two-Test series against Bangladesh, shortly after announcing his decision to return to Test cricket having retired from the format last year.

During the third ODI in the recently-concluded series against Bangladesh, Hasaranga was found guilty of breaching article 2.8 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to “showing dissent at an Umpire’s decision during an International Match.”

The incident occurred in the 37th over of the game when Hasaranga snatched his cap from one of the umpires and ridiculed the umpiring in the match.

Copied from somewhere else on the internet

Let me break this down:

• Hasaranga has demerit points and a suspension waiting for him
• The next international cricket he plays is at the T20WC
• Blud pulls out a 420 IQ move by reversing test retirement so he gets suspended there instead of T20WC.

Yeah Hasaranga played ICC here

Hasaranga needs a serious attitude check. That's the second time in the space of a few months he has gone overboard with the umpires.
