For reference, the 10 most popular sports in the world:

1. Football
2. Cricket
3. Hockey
4. Tennis
5. Volleyball
6. Table Tennis
7. Basketball
8. Baseball
9. Rugby
10. Golf

Baseball has been number 1 for me.

Almost every other game is a heartthrobber. This is how the game format has been - unchanged for decades.
The fans enthusiasm is a compelling evidence.

It’s sad to see how they miscegenated cricket with T20 in smaller n smaller boundaries - the spark lasted only for a couple of initial years - and now it’s just a plain and boring flurry of boundaries.

I think American football will be number one for many in United States, fans are absolutely crazy about it; not me though.

Nothing has come close to Grand Slam tennis the last 15 years when Big 3 face off

I think depends on the country n region.

Here in the U.S., we can perhaps say nothing comes close to American football , in UK, it’s perhaps soccer, in Australia it’s perhaps Rugby and so on.

Most entertaining? Has to be Darts. Never a boring moment!

Cricket/Football while top sports, these do suffer from periods of sheer boredom.

F1, is entertaining with respect to the technicals, while actual racing can be hit and miss.

There is an elegance and symmetry to baseball missing from short-form cricket.

Ice hockey. Fast moving.

Traditional hockey sucks as there is rarely any play making and most of the goals are scored by getting those corners.

Football is great as even the weak team has a chance. Love watching the world cup.

Cricket is slow paced. Not as entertaining. T20s are fun, odis are also fun depending againdy the opposition.
Test only fun when playing in england. I enoy bowling friemdly conditions.

Baseball umpiring is ridiculous and could learn from cricket on how to use technology

Combat sports , boxing , wrestling, martial arts . The first sports in history , since man arrived involved people fighting.

Gladiators weren’t sent out to play handball .

Soccer/Football is #1. Nothing comes close.

Cricket is #2 to me but many may say other sports are #2.

F1 If you are into it

I haven’t followed it for a long time but it really is gripping once you make it a habit to watch

FIFA world cups and UEFA euro cups are also a great spectacle

Football overall is unpredictable because you might just watch a boring 0-0 more often than not but International tournaments are always compelling because the draw is still an important result in group stages, and there are no draws in the knock outs

I think the ICC t20 World Cup and Champions Trophy are very entertaining spectacles as well which involves a lot of drama.

F1. By far very entertaining and something always happens, especially the last couple of seasons. Even the boring tracks like Spain have produced exciting racing. Yes it can look like a procession at some points of a race, but it’s just a lull before the storm. Every sport has similar Luls.

Depending upon the players, tennis can also be very exciting. For instance the semis between zverev and Nadal was setting up to be cracker before Zverev twisted his ankle.

Cricket and baseballs have too much low periods, especially with them lasting so long.

If you just want a bit of relaxed watching, then I prefer golf

Football - the stories/context are more entertaining than the games themselves at times but the emotions and drama are unparalleled in sport. The last day of the EPL this season had it all. On field action can sometimes be a bit dull.

Cricket is very entertaining but only when there is a proper battle between bat and ball. It doesn't matter the format, every ball is an event with something at stake.

Can someone explain to me what so entertaining about f1. Dont they run like 60 laps on the track.

The thing i find interesting in it is the pit stops :inzi
DeadlyVenom mention a good point, in framchise sports, its the stories that keep them interesting. What cricket leagues lack are those trades, transfers etc.

They run for 4-6 weeks. Maybe cricket needs to adopt the 300 day league format

Gladiators weren’t sent out to play handball .

This. POTW :afridi

But, golf is more popular then Boxing apparently :yk3

Golf the sport where you watch a shot for one min , then walk for 20 mins for the next :))

There have been a lot of sports events in the last week but if anyone understand boxing & watched George Kambosos v Haney , what a treat , excitement & a masterclass from Haney.

Ok you may have the world cup of football final or champions league final , it’s exciting but doesn’t come close to the excitement of Ali fighting in the past or Iron Mike in the recent past .

Combat sports can be loved & is loved by all races , religions & nationalities . Of course it’s not everyone’s taste but if the discussion is excitement, wins hands knock down .

Honourable mention - E-sports.

I enjoy watching professional Call of Duty players in action. Watching them take out full squads (of up to 4 people) all by themselves in some spectacle.

UFC - Mixed Martial Arts has really grown on me to the point where I follow it reasonably closely now. I cannot think of any other sporting event where there is action literally every single second. Yes, occasionally there are some damp squibs but the number of fight disciplines that are on show in a single MMA combat is ridiculous.

I also like the whole set-up, logistics, glamour and the number of people involved in strategy etc., for Formula 1. This also has to be one of the most dangerous sports what with drivers driving at speeds over 220 mph navigating crazy turns and courses.

If you take out the odd very poor fight like Rose’s last one , UFC has grown to a phenomenal level . Still behind boxing and MMA will always will be due to boxings huge history & huge following but many fights are so exciting . Ufc helps the excitement by having a great build up of characters & story line .

F1 would be more exciting if they did away with car engineering superiority. I’m a huge car fan but when you know only 2-3 drivers will mostly win the race it’loses the competitive edge .

Rally driving requires more skill imo .

Boxing is extremely entertaining, followed by ice hockey as its a very fast sport

peak entertainment, boxing, nothing comes close to when u feel someone hanging on with sheer force of will, or a knockdown against the run of play, something visceral about it, a lot of sport you can tell athletes are playing within the experience of their practise.

but boxing, and I'm guessing combat sport in general, is not something you can practise with unbridled competitive ferocity, you can see in the final rounds when these guys go to that dark place, and try to pull it out the bag, it's inspiring for anyone who has to fight for something which seems beyond what they can take in their lives.

Most football fans despise the World Cup because of its lack of quality

If you like the physical aspect of sports, do watch few nhl fights.

I wish cricket was more like nhl. You have an issue with a pkayer fight it out, throw punches anddo a penalty and come back in...

Its not really a sport, just a sort of accepted part of some Ice Hockey leagues. Boxing is not needless violence due to anger, its a science of defend, attack, stamina and of course the human courage which is part of other sports but not on the same level.

Most football fans despise the World Cup because of its lack of quality

But what does that have to do with actually entertainment? Every enjoys watching their country play a big World Cup match in the summer. You don’t have to be a football fan at all to enjoy the World Cup

Pollard vs Starc scrapping in the IPL when they had that incident would have been a good fight to watch.

Among the ones I have watched Live it’s definitely Ice hockey.

On TV I must say American Football, every second counts.(It’s amazing Live as well but doesn’t beat hockey).

This. POTW :afridi

I’m actually Surprised Golf is so damn popular on TV, then I realized to whom it’s catered to lol.

Area near my place in Texas is getting its own PGA 😂 and man people are so happy.

It’s definitely the most boring sport on TV for me but have to say it’s fun to play..(really tough).

A good test match is like a pinnacle of sports drama not many sports can pack the thrill, patience, skill, competitiveness ,entertainment in one package like a good test match does however on the flip side there can be some really one sided poor quality test matches aswell.

Pretty much while they wave to the people and act like some elite sporting accomplishment was achieved. I actually went out of my way to watch the Haney / Kambosos fight, only purists can appreciate the wonder behind that educated/versatile Jab alone being utilised to win the fight, you just knew it was going to be a masterclass and I had to watch in absolute awe. Haney btw converted recently alhamdulilah, I’ve seen a renewed determination in him beyond his years, when you have the right inspiration behind you anything is possible.

Totally agree, combat is a metaphor for life and deep down even among critics it thrills in a way not possible, I literally be on the edge and so excited I can barely say a word sometimes; nothing else has managed to replicate that feeling. There have been times maybe where pro-wrestling may have evoked similar emotion but it’s scripted in the end and a little different now to what it use to be.

Football has become too dull in modern times imo the finals of these tournaments don’t always deliver, and thing with fighting is, even in a one sided encounter you can just appreciate the shear skill at the highest level and there’s more of a grit when you just know these guys are literally risking it all including their life. You don’t play Boxing.

Don’t get me wrong I enjoy a bit of mini golf it’s fun to play can’t deny that.

A mate joined a proper club though and he said it was mainly old white dudes playing it he stuck out like a sore thumb :))

In your neck of the woods it must be popular. But on TV I would need explanation on anyone watching it under 40 lol

It may sound very "on brand" but cricket is one of those sports where when it's bad (dull pitches/one sided contests), it's BAD.

However when it's a close match and you cannot predict the result until the very end - there's still nothing like it for me.

When I rewatch the 2019 WC final, Headingley 2019 Test, 2016 WT20 final, or even that random WI-IRE ODI just pre-COVID that went down to the wire - I still get the same adrenaline rush and thrill as I did first watching cricket at the age of 6.

Sports like golf and horse racing could never provide me with that emotional high.

IMO football and cricket are untouchable and in a league of their own when it comes to entertainment.

IMO, Boxing and Kick-Boxing are NOT sports of any kind.

Both are barbaric and unacceptably dangerous. The alarming incidences of chronic brain injuries produced by boxing and the sheer barbaric approach in kick-boxing, should result in both getting banned! They are a shame in the name of "sports".

Sports shouldn't be an event to inflict a direct brutally harm injury on another's physical body. How could this be a "sports"?
If anyone has any interest in such an event, they should enroll themselves into the army, and request to be sent over to warzone without weapons.

Sports should ideally be the display of skill on the third non-living entity -- like ball or a bat or a car or rifle etc.

In Boxing the intention and mindset of a fighter especially at the highest level is not motivated by brutalising an opponent, those who have such views tend to be the ones who get seriously hurt, it’s a chess match, about your technical ability, conditioning, preparation / professionalism in and out the ring.

To say they are not sport suggests anyone of the street could do it or it’s same as picking up a weapon and taking someone out but that’s a shallow view on the sport when it teaches discipline.

Yes, the risks are apparent and no disputing that / these exist in other sports to; but Boxing inspires and saves more lives then it takes, the only way to come around to this view is to visit a licensed amateur boxing gym and talk to people there.

Football for sure. It easily draws the largest crowds with most matches full to the capacity. My own second favourite is Snooker followed by both Cricket and Tennis. Let's face it Cricket is a hangover of British imperialism. We only watch it coz it is the only Sport Pak is half decent at.

Cricket is my number 1 sport. I'm an insomniacs and recently whenever I sit to watch cricket I start to fall asleep. I think cricket is the cure to my insomnia but it has to be live cricket.

I can't imagine how people that arent familiar with the sport find it.

That’s a very conflicting situation - if watching a sports puts you to sleep, then it must be VERY BORING.

Otherwise, if it was entertaining to you, you wouldn’t sleep watching it.

That's right, that's the whole point of my post. Cricket off late has been a little boring for my liking and has actually put me to sleep. The Test series Vs Aus, yesterday's Match.

I think only ICC events are wroth watching with full attention and passion. I'd be treating everything else as a cure to my insomnia.

Nothing beats football for me. The Premier League and Champions League produce the perfect blend of elite skill, fitness, physicality and pure, unpredictable chaos. For example, no one can watch that entire Real Madrid run to the UCL final and say football doesn't produce viewing perfection.

The storylines that play out are rooted in years of history and play out across seasons, which makes so many of these dramatic moments feel much bigger than just that single match or trophy.

Cricket all the way. Only sport that I will even catch up on even if it’s a random domestic game or u-19 game. As a sports fan follow most sports but limited to only marquee events so cricket by default is the winner.

I grew up as a football fanatic but over the years I've fallen out of love with it.

While the top European domestic leagues and Champions League can certainly produce dramatic and unpredictable moments, the eventual winners predictably rotate between the usual set of mega-rich clubs who can simply cheatcode their way to success through overwhelming financial resources.

As much as I hated Man Utd during their era of success, I could never deny that it was hard earned through years of sound decisions on and off the pitch. Man City meanwhile won a financial lottery, becoming part of a sportswashing mission by a super-rich Gulf dictatorship that abuses migrant workers and has subjected the poorest country in the Middle East to the worst humanitarian crisis in decades.

The notion of an underdog team like Nottingham Forest under Brian Clough emerging from nowhere in the lower leagues to suddenly become League and European Champions is inconceivable now. The Leicester story was an anomaly in an otherwise unbroken period of domination by the big guns.

You would like NFL NBA that way due to draft pics.

I share your views. It makes me. sick.

Many people are ignorant or disregard the fact that Yemen is experiencing the worst humanitarian crisis in the world.

But the Ummah have themselves to blame. They go crazy and turn up to protests when Palestine is in attack (and rightly so) but most of these voices go quiet when it comes to Yemen even though tens of thousands of people are starving to death because the culprit are Muslims.

Snooker. It is one game that requires intelligence:jofra Also being a non team Sport you can't depend on your team mates to bail you out on a bad day.

Hard to pick between NFL and cricket - Depends on the quality of teams.

From a Neutral perspective. Cricket comes nowhere near, its facts, its a horrible sport.

It has to be Football, simply because it has the most popularity, and it is also historically the most popular activity. Second would and third would likely be between Boxing, Basketball, maybe even the UFC rubbish (again from a neutral perspective)

Has to be football, all things considered.

Cricket is something that you have to love and understand from an early age, ingrained in you by your family or culture, not many people from outside a cricket bubble just stumble upon it and become fans.

Cricket, Tennis and Hockey. In that order.

Soccer only during world cups.

Volleyball only I am walking on mexican and american beaches :D

Football and by some distance too

But ultimately this is really subjective, know people that can't stand football but they love Rugby, which I find incredibly bizarre as to me Rugby is very dull

Cricket is my lifeline, but the fact is, football is a global game. Well, I think it depends on what resonates with the emotions.

Test cricket when two quality sides compete on a even keel basis. Even better if it's on a bowling track.

Thoroughly enjoyed the Ashes, Australia touring England and the recent SA/India series. Brilliant entertainment.
