Is MCS owned by PCB? I thought all of the major venues in Pakistan were owned by PCB.

Lahore: A 5-member delegation from Zimbabwe has reached Lahore to review bio-secure arrangements prior to their team’s arrival in Pakistan to play three ODIs and as many T20Is.

They will inspect the bio-secure bubble at the hotel and will further review arrangements at the stadium.

The delegation will also hold meetings with security and medical officials. They will visit Gaddafi Stadium tomorrow and will visit Rawalpindi after reviewing the arrangements in Lahore.

It must be noted that the delegation is on the expenses of Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC). The members of the medical team are also part of the delegation. They will go back to Zimbabwe on October 15.

Zimbabwe is scheduled to play three ODIs on October 30, November 1, and 3 whereas three T20Is on November 7, 8 and 10 respectively.

Blessing Muzarabani, who had put his international career on hold, has been named in Zimbabwe's 20-man squad for their tour of Pakistan later this month.

Muzarabani, who had signed a Kolpak deal in 2018 with Northamptonshire, decided to return to international fold after he was released from the contract.

The 6ft 6in fast bowler's presence will provide a valuable boost to Zimbabwe's squad, which will be missing the experienced Kyle Jarvis, who has been ruled out with a stress fracture.

Muzarabani, who debuted in 2017, has featured in one Test, 18 ODIs and six T20Is, picking up 27 wickets.

Two uncapped players have also been added to the squad: 19-year-old left-handed batsman Milton Shumba and 27-year-old paceman Faraz Akram.

Zimbabwe are scheduled to play three ODIs and as many T20Is, beginning 30 October. The ODI series will be a part of the ICC Cricket World Cup Super League and will be played in Lahore, while the T20Is will be played in Rawalpindi.

PCB announces revised itinerary for Zimbabwe series

Lahore, 11 October 2020:

Pakistan will launch its bid to qualify directly for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 by taking on Zimbabwe in the three ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Super League matches in Rawalpindi on 30 October, 1 and 3 November, the Pakistan Cricket Board confirmed today.

The ICC has introduced the Super League to provide context to ODI cricket and will serve as a qualification for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 with the hosts and other top seven sides automatically booking their spots for the India event. Featuring 13 teams, the 12 Test playing countries and the Netherlands, the Super League will see each side play four home and four away three-match series.

The three ODIs were originally scheduled for Multan, but have been moved to Rawalpindi due to logistical and operational challenges.

The change in the venue also means Lahore will now stage the three Twenty20 Internationals on 7, 8 and 10 November. These matches were initially planned to take place in Rawalpindi.

Explaining the changes, PCB Director – International Cricket, Zakir Khan said: “After Multan became unavailable due to logistical and operational reasons, we took the opportunity to revisit the entire schedule and have come up with an itinerary that is suitable for the teams, match officials, broadcasters, event staff and other support agencies.

“In the meantime, we are also in regular touch with the Metrological department and seeking their forecast for smog during November. We will continue to liaise with the Met Office and monitor the situation, and, if required, will make necessary changes.

“The availability of Rawalpindi has ensured there is no uncertainty for our ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Super League matches as we aim to collect maximum points from this series to achieve our target of qualifying directly for the ICC’s pinnacle 50-over event.”

Zimbabwe last visited Pakistan in 2015 for three ODIs and two T20Is. However, they now return after international cricket has resumed in Pakistan with full force following the successful tours of Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) in the 2019-20 season.

In addition to this, HBL Pakistan Super League, for the first time in its young history, was staged in Pakistan until the last four matches were postponed on 17 March due to Covid-19 pandemic. These matches of the fifth edition will be staged in Lahore on 14, 15 and 17 November.

Revised schedule (start time to be confirmed in due course):

20 Oct – Zimbabwe arrival in Islamabad
21-27 Oct – Isolation period & practice
28-29 Oct – Practice at Pindi Cricket Stadium
30 Oct – 1st ODI, Pindi Cricket Stadium
1 Nov – 2nd ODI, Pindi Cricket Stadium
3 Nov – 3rd ODI Pindi Cricket Stadium
4 Nov – Travel to Lahore
5-6 Nov – Practice at Gaddafi Stadium
7 Nov – 1st T20I Gaddafi Stadium
8 Nov – 2nd T20I, Gaddafi Stadium
10 Nov – 3rd T20I, Gaddafi Stadium

Bio-bubble ahead of Chevrons tour of Pakistan

Harare – Zimbabwe’s national cricket team, the Chevrons, will on Monday be placed in a bio-secure bubble in Harare to minimise COVID-19 infection risks as they intensify preparations for a tour of Pakistan for a limited-overs series.

Only those who return negative results in tests this weekend will be allowed into the bubble ahead of the team’s departure for Pakistan on October 19 for the tour which begins on October 31.

Zimbabwe Cricket spokesperson Darlington Majonga said, “The bubble – which will cover the team hotel, stadium and bus – will also limit the disruption on training and practice should a positive coronavirus case be recorded. Accordingly, only the travelling players and members of the technical staff will be permitted access to the team hotel and practice ground.

“This also means all those in the bubble will not be permitted to have access to families, visitors, friends and relatives for the duration of the isolation period. All those offering the necessary support services before the team leaves for Pakistan – such as net bowlers, match officials, ground staff and caterers – will also be in the bubble.

“Apart from being expected to strictly adhere to all COVID-19 protocols such as sanitisation and social distancing, all individuals within the bubble will be monitored daily through temperature and symptom checks.”

Zimbabwe and Pakistan play three ODIs beginning October 31 in Multan and as many T20s in Rawalpindi.

The entire tour will be played put in a bio-bubble with no spectators.

Lahore, 13 October 2020: The Pakistan Cricket Board has decided to have early starts for the ODIs and T20Is against Zimbabwe to ensure fair playing conditions for both teams with the weather forecast in mind.

The three One-Day Internationals in Rawalpindi to be played on 30 October, 1 and 3 November will begin at 12pm, while the first ball in the three Twenty20 Internationals, to be played at Gaddafi Stadium on 7, 8 and 10 November, will be bowled at 3.30pm.

The decision to have early starts is taken to mitigate the impact of fog, dew and possible smog.

ZIMBABWE Cricket have secured a kit deal with Ihsan International for the upcoming limited-overs series in Pakistan.
The sponsorship package, worth US$30 000, will see the Pakistan-based sports goods manufacturer supplying playing, training and travel wear to Zimbabwe’s touring players and members of the support staff.

“I am delighted to unveil the US$30 000 kit sponsorship for the Zimbabwe national cricket team. The kit sponsorship is for the 32 members of the Zimbabwe national cricket team for use during the upcoming tour to Pakistan which starts from the 20th of October 2020.” ,” Ihsan International director Majid Khan said.

The new playing shirt was presented to President Emmerson Mnangagwa and his deputies as well as to several ministers during a ceremony held at State House in Harare on Tuesday.

ZC said the Pakistan tour kit deal is over and above the US$70 000 sponsorship contract that them and Ihsan International had already sealed for the supply of kit to four women’s provincial teams and two men’s regional select sides.

An Ihsan International representative, Kingston Makiwa, unveiled the kit for the women’s teams, Eagles, Mountaineers, Rhinos and Tuskers during an event held at Harare Sports Club on Wednesday to launch women’s inter-provincial one-day and T20 competitions.

ZC acting managing director, Givemore Makoni has expressed gratitude Ihsan International, who previously provided uniforms for Zimbabwe and domestic sides between 2004 and 2007, for the latest sponsorship packages.

“On behalf of ZC, I would like to express our gratitude to Ihsan International for teaming up with us again for the Pakistan tour as well as for our women’s domestic cricket and men’s regional select sides. Seeing our teams neatly kitted out in such quality wear gives us joy and we have no doubt that will also motivate our boys and girls to perform to the best of their abilities,’’ Makoni said.

Apart from the kit deals, Ihsan International have also been sponsoring a few individual Zimbabwe players with cricket equipment.

Good to see Pakistani sponsors sponsoring other teams as well. Eoin Morgan carries a CA bat now a days post his deal with CA sports of Pakistan. Even in Pakistan's last WI tour Q mobile was the main sponsor and even had a mascot on WI grounds.

Pakistan cricket can bring in much more money going forward if handled and managed well. Some of the biggest companies of Pakistan are yet to be fully involved in the sport as sponsors and investors.

Hopefully Misbah selects some of the players who did well in the T20 competition.

Zimbabwe Cricket acting managing director, Givemore Makoni, has hailed the kit deal signed with Ihsan International ahead of the Chevrons' limited overs tour to Pakistan.

The sponsorship package, worth US$30 000, will see the Pakistan-based sports goods manufacturer supplying playing, training and travel gear to Zimbabwe's touring players and members of their support staff.

Ihsan International are not new to cricket in Zimbabwe.

They supplied uniforms for the national teams and domestic sides between 2004 and 2007. Apart from the kit deals, Ihsan International have also been sponsoring a few individual Zimbabwe players with cricket equipment.

LAHORE: Just three days before the Zimbabwe cricket team is scheduled to touch down in Islamabad for a three ODI and three T20I series, the Pakistan Cricket Board reiterated it has not paid any extra money to the visitors to undertake the FTP tour as was the case with them in 2015.

“The PCB paid Zimbabwe, a World XI and West Indies players between 2015 and 2018 to to tour Pakistan. We believe that was the right move then and was done to build confidence in the visiting players, the cricket boards and to help revive cricket in Pakistan.

“However, the PCB has moved on very quickly from this. It is now focusing on building, developing and strengthening trust, confidence and credibility in the eyes of the cricketing world,” PCB Chief Executive Officer Wasim Khan told the Associated Press of Pakistan in an exclusive interview here on Saturday..

“The need to entice international players to Pakistan by offering handsome financial rewards is now firmly behind us. Instead, the PCB will invest these valuable funds into our women’s cricket, upgrading our infrastructure, improving domestic and international player contracts and developing world-class coach education programmes,” said Wasim, a former first-class cricketer and a Warwick Business School graduate.

The PCB reportedly paid USD12,500 to each Zimbabwe player in 2015, while each member of the World XI received up to USD100,000 in 2017. The PCB also paid the West Indies side in excess of USD250,000 in 2018 to play three T20Is in Karachi. In addition, the ICC paid an independent security firm US$1.2million over three years as part of its contribution for the resumption of cricket in Pakistan.

But during the current PCB regime, Test cricket returned to Pakistan after 10 years with the visits of Sri Lanka and Bangladesh respectively while additionally, an MCC team toured Lahore last year after 48 years.

Furthermore, the hosting of 30 matches of the HBL Pakistan Super League 2020 at four Pakistan venues which featured 37 foreign players further consolidated the fact that Pakistan is as safe and as secure as any place in the world.

“The England and Wales Cricket Board’s positive intent of visiting Pakistan for a short three T20I series in January 2021 is a clear indictor that after the 2019-2020 season, international teams can feel very confident coming to Pakistan, fully aware that our safety and security provisions are robust and our hospitality remains second to none,” said Wasim.

“We have home series against Zimbabwe, South Africa, New Zealand, Australia and England in the next two years. These series will surely provide the cricket fans and followers plenty of quality cricket, thrill and excitement, which will be extremely pleasing and satisfying for us,” concluded the 49-year-old CEO Wasim.

Chibhabha bullish ahead of Pakistan series

ZIMBABWE national cricket team captain, Chamu Chibhabha, says the Chevrons are prepared to give their hosts Pakistan a good fight as they look to get their 2023 ICC World Cup campaign on a positive note.

The Chevrons, who have been inactive for the past seven months due to the coronavirus lockdown, left for the Asian country yesterday with a 20-member squad.

The teams will clash in three One Day Internationals and as many T20 Internationals from October 30 to November 10.

The ODI series carries extra significance as it forms part of the inaugural ICC Super League, which will determine the teams that will qualify for the next World Cup in India.

Chibhabha said the players, who were immaculately dressed in grey suits as they left the country, were excited to tour for the first time since March when they last played in Bangladesh.

“Obviously, the guys are excited to go to Pakistan, the wait is over,” said Chibhabha.

“In a couple of days’ time we will be hitting the ground running. I think we have had a couple of weeks of training, we played a couple of games.

“The National Premier League is on and the guys managed to play a couple of games as well, so the guys are good and ready.

“We have played Pakistan before, and beat them, so we believe we can actually play well, compete and beat them.

“And, considering it’s the Super League games, each game that we play going forward is going to be important, considering that the more games we win gives us a better chance to qualify for the World Cup.”

The Super League is an important tournament on the road to the 2023 World Cup since the matches will carry points.

It features 13 teams, that include the 12 ICC full members and the Netherlands, who qualified by winning the ICC World Cricket Super League 2015-17.

The Super League will see each side play four home and four away three-match series.

However, the coronavirus pandemic has disrupted the international fixtures, with Zimbabwe having to cancel dates against Ireland, India and Australia, which also fell under the Super League.

Pakistan were also under lockdown but they got the clearance to resume domestic, and international cricket, earlier than their Zimbabwean counterparts.

The Pakistanis have since toured England and played three Tests and three T20Is.

“Obviously, they have managed to play a couple of games and we have just been sitting at home but I feel well prepared.

‘’We have had our chances to prepare before this tour and I think we had some pretty good match practice and also playing in the NPL helped the guys to get some match practice.

‘’So the guys are ready,” said Chibhabha.

The touring squad has been built seasoned around campaigners like Brendan Taylor, Tendai Chatara, Craig Ervine, Sikandar Raza, Sean Williams and Elton Chigumbura and Chibhabha.

Fast bowler Blessing Muzarabani has also returned to the side after spending two years playing county cricket in the United Kingdom.

Two uncapped players, Milton Shumba and Faraz Akram also made it into the squad.

The selectors also included other young talents in the form of Wessly Madhevere and Richard Ngarava.

“Every time we have youngsters in the team we try and make them feel comfortable, enjoy their time and enjoy their experience.

“We don’t want to put too much pressure on them. It’s up to the senior players to take responsibility and then the youngsters can just follow behind,” said Chibhabha.

Match officials for Zimbabwe series confirmed

Lahore, 20 October 2020:

Aleem Dar has been assigned on-field duties in five of the six upcoming white-ball matches between Pakistan and Zimbabwe, which will be played from 30 October to 10 November. The three 50-over ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Super League matches will be played in Rawalpindi, while Lahore will host the three 20-over fixtures.

Aleem, the three-time ICC Umpire of the Year from the ICC Elite Panel of Umpires, will stand in all the three ODIs as well as the first and third T20I, while he will be the third umpire for the second T20I.

The ICC has appointed Prof. Javed Malik, member of the ICC International Panel of Match Referees, as match referee for the series.

As per the ICC’s interim playing regulations, Aleem and Javed will be the ICC-appointed match officials. The PCB has appointed the umpires from the ICC International Panel of Match Officials, namely Ahsan Raza, Asif Yaqoob, Rashid Riaz and Shozab Raza.

When Ahsan Raza will walk out to officiate the second T20I, he will become the first umpire to complete a half-century of T20Is. Aleem Dar is second on the list with 46 matches, while Shozab Raza shares fourth spot with South Africa’s Shaun George with 36 matches.

Ahsan, a former first-class cricketer, began his international umpiring career in February 2010 by standing in an ODI between Afghanistan and Canada at Sharjah Cricket Ground. Later that year in October, he officiated his first T20I match when Pakistan played South Africa at Abu Dhabi. Overall, the 46-year-old has stood in 85 international matches.

ICC’s interim playing regulations, which are applicable to the upcoming series:

Ban on applying saliva to the ball: Players will not be permitted to use saliva to shine the ball. If a player does apply saliva to the ball, the umpires will manage the situation with some leniency during an initial period of adjustment for the players, but subsequent instances will result in the team receiving a warning.

A team can be issued up to two warnings per innings but repeated use of saliva on the ball will result in a 5-run penalty to the batting side. Whenever saliva is applied to the ball, the umpires will be instructed to clean the ball before play recommences.

Non-neutral umpires: The requirement to appoint neutral match officials will be temporarily removed from the playing conditions for all international formats owing to the current logistical challenges with international travel. The ICC will be able to appoint locally based match officials from the ICC Elite Panel of Match Officials and the ICC International Panel of Match Officials.

Additional DRS reviews: The CEC has also confirmed an additional unsuccessful DRS review for each team in each innings of a match, keeping in mind that there may be less experienced umpires on duty at times. This will increase the number of unsuccessful appeals per innings for each team to two for the white-ball formats.

The ICC Cricket Operations team will support Match Referees when processing Code of Conduct breaches and a neutral Elite Panel match referee will conduct any hearing remotely via video link.

Appointments (ODIs to start 1200, T20Is to commence 1530):

30 Oct – 1st ODI, Rawalpindi. Aleem Dar and Ahsan Raza (on-field umpires), Asif Yaqoob (third umpire), Rashid Riaz (fourth umpire); Javed Malik (match referee)

1 Nov – 2nd ODI, Rawalpindi. Aleem Dar and Asif Yaqoob (on-field umpires), Ahsan Raza (third umpire), Shozab Raza (fourth umpire); Javed Malik (match referee)

RAWALPINDI (Web Desk) – For much of the first decade of his career, Elton Chigumbura was among the first names on the Zimbabwe team sheet. Known for his power-hitting at a time when Zimbabwe lacked players with that attribute, and crucial to balancing the side thanks to his ability to bowl medium pace, Chigumbura seemed to be the full package. But, over the past five years, people s patience with the 34-year-old, no matter how decorated his CV, has seemingly begun to run thin.

There was forensic scrutiny in Zimbabwe after Chigumbura kept his place in the side for the upcoming tour to Pakistan. For one, he s no longer a bowler, just a middle-order batsman. And one who has scored a grand total of one half-century in ODI cricket in the past five years, and managed a T20I score higher than 35 in just one innings since May 2015.

Speaking to the media after the Zimbabwe team landed in Pakistan to play three T20Is and three ODIs, and having begun a six-day quarantine period, Chigumbura said injuries had played a part in the drop in his performance, but he was raring to go once more.

"I have struggled with my form," he said. "I had a couple of injuries that put me away for quite some time. So it was down to my injuries I was out for almost a year, not playing international cricket. And when I came back again, I got another injury, for which I had to go and get surgery done. Right now, I m looking forward to this series, hopefully to get back to where I was. And these wickets in Pakistan are good wickets to bat on. So hopefully I can carry on from last time when I was in Pakistan.

"I am fully fit now. I got an Achilles injury last year. When I was about to just start playing again, then the Covid-19 pandemic happened. So I m happy to be back in the squad. Hopefully we get a chance to enjoy every moment."

Chigumbura has reason to be optimistic about his prospects in Pakistan. When Zimbabwe became the first side to visit the country after the 2009 terror attack on the Sri Lankan team, the-then 29-year-old was the star of the visiting side. He struck a career-best 54 in the first T20I, before going on to smash a 95-ball 117, also a career high, in his only ODI innings as the visiting side posted 334 in their 50 overs. He would carry on that form, making it back-to-back hundreds by hitting an unbeaten 104 against India six weeks later. He was in the form of his life, before it all suddenly slipped away.

But when you re around the Zimbabwe set-up for as long as he has been, you ll likely have seen enough rough times to understand there is a way to come out of it.

"We have to try and start winning games. Everyone is really focused. It s not just the series that will determine our future - every game that you play in the [ODI] Super League is very important for the team so that we qualify for the next World Cup overseas. And we take it one game at a time, but everyone in the team is very ready and eager to go.

"It s important that we have to play to win, not to just compete. So all those mindsets are things that we have spoken about in training and everyone is aware of what we need to do as a team and as individuals when it comes to these international games. And hopefully we start on a good note.

"I believe we can be competitive. We came here to win. Everyone, they re willing to go out there and express themselves. Everyone is raring to go, especially after being out of cricket for almost six, seven months."

Chigumbura insisted the absence of their head coach, Lalchand Rajput, would not have an adverse effect on the side. Rajput, a former Indian cricketer, pulled out of the tour of Pakistan after the Indian High Commission in Zimbabwe wrote to Zimbabwe Cricket requesting he be exempted from touring Pakistan. As a result, bowling coach Douglas Hondo took over full coaching duties for the tour, and Chigumbura said the side would be in regular touch with Rajput online.

"Nothing s going to change. The same system, same system coaches that were under him are the ones that are leading the team. So all the values of the team are still the same. We re having a meeting over a conference call and I m sure he ll be part of the strategy. So it s just a matter of us as players to carry on and make sure that we implement what he always emphasised to us."

Chigumbura said the mood in the camp this time was worlds removed from when they last visited in terms of Zimbabwe s outlook on security in Pakistan. "Obviously it s good to be back in Pakistan. The first time we came here five years ago, everyone was a bit scared. But I think the way they hosted us last time, we are confident that we are in safe hands and so far everyone is comfortable. And after having our first training session today, we are looking forward to the matches."

Much has changed in Pakistan and elsewhere in the five years since Zimbabwe arrived on these shores in May 2015. But when he steps out in the middle, Chigumbura will be hoping things go back to the way they were when he last felt ball on bat in Pakistan.

Do we have any broadcast information..First match is 10 days away.

Anybody knows who is broadcasting in the UK if PCB producing in HD it might be BT Sports or Sky for once in their lives i doubt it though.

One can only dream. Having said that right now with the lack of cricket being played and the gaps in broadcasting schedules could have meant more exposure for us.

Zimbabwe captain Chamu Chibhabha is aiming to start with a bang in his side’s ODI series against Pakistan later this month.

The three day/night ODI matches in Rawalpindi will be crucial for the Chevrons in their quest to qualify for the 2023 ICC Men's Cricket World Cup in India.

The first game is scheduled for 30 October, with two further fixtures set for 1 and 3 November, while the series is part of the inaugural ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Super League that will serve as the main route for qualification for 2023’s showpiece event.

The 13-team league competition will see the top seven sides, plus India, qualifying directly for the World Cup, while the remaining five teams, along with five Associate sides, will play in a qualifier tournament from which two teams will go through to the global showcase.

Speaking during Zimbabwe’s second day of training at the Army Cricket Ground in Rawalpindi on Thursday, Chibhabha underscored his side’s desire to do well in the Super League.

“It’s very crucial for us to play really well,” he said. “Super League games are very important when you consider the fact that we have to qualify for the World Cup.

“We would rather qualify directly as opposed to having to play in the qualifiers because that’s a lot of pressure.

“So we would love to get a couple of wins under our belt, which makes life easier for us to qualify for the World Cup.”

Chibhabha, who is one of the six Zimbabwe players in the current squad who toured Pakistan in 2015, said they were still trying to get accustomed to the local conditions but he is expecting high-scoring encounters.

“From our experience in 2015, we know we are going to play on a flat wicket – some might have a bit of spin on them, slow and turning, but we are expecting a lot of runs in this series,” the captain said.

“Obviously, it’s going to be hot but it’s not as bad as we expected. We will also be playing day/night matches, so dew is going to play a huge factor.”

After the ODI series, Pakistan and Zimbabwe will tussle it out in three T20I matches scheduled for 7, 8 and 10 November in Lahore.

Squad: Chamu Chibhabha (captain), Faraz Akram, Ryan Burl, Brian Chari, Tendai Chatara, Elton Chigumbura, Tendai Chisoro, Craig Ervine, Tinashe Kamunhukamwe, Wessly Madhevere, Wellington Masakadza, Carl Mumba, Richmond Mutumbami, Blessing Muzarabani, Richard Ngarava, Sikandar Raza, Milton Shumba, Brendan Taylor, Donald Tiripano, Sean Williams.

HARARE, Zimbabwe (AP) — Two Zimbabwe cricketers have tested positive for the coronavirus, although neither of them are with the team on the tour of Pakistan and they did not come into contact with any of the traveling squad, Zimbabwe Cricket said Thursday.

Wicketkeeper Regis Chakabva and batsman Timycen Maruma tested positive after being roommates for a week at the Zimbabwe cricket academy in Harare. They were on standby for the Pakistan tour in case any players dropped out but weren't staying with the main squad, which was in a sealed-off wing of a hotel before flying to Pakistan this week.

Two support staff members at the academy also tested positive and it has been closed for disinfection.

Zimbabwe's squad all tested negative for the virus on arrival in Islamabad, according to ZC. They will be tested again on Tuesday after a week of quarantine. Zimbabwe will play Pakistan in three one-day internationals and three T20 games starting on Oct. 30.

Lahore matches moved to Rawalpindi and Karachi due to smog

• Zimbabwe T20Is to be played in Rawalpindi, while the remaining four HBL PSL 2020 matches will be held in Karachi

• “Following the sudden deterioration in air quality and now further expected air pollution in November, we have made a swift decision to move the matches scheduled in Lahore,” says Wasim Khan

Lahore, 23 October 2020:

Taking into consideration the health and wellbeing of professional athletes and match officials due to the recent deterioration in the air quality caused by an early onset of intense air pollution in Lahore, which is expected to deepen next month, the Pakistan Cricket Board today decided to relocate scheduled matches at the cricket headquarters to Rawalpindi and Karachi.

This rescheduling due to weather conditions impacts the three T20Is between Pakistan and Zimbabwe, and the remaining four HBL Pakistan Super League 2020 fixtures, which will now be held in Rawalpindi and Karachi, respectively, on the dates announced earlier.

PCB chief executive Wasim Khan said: “We have been keeping a close eye on air quality forecasts over the last two weeks. Following the sudden deterioration in air quality and now further expected air pollution in November, we have made a swift decision to move the matches scheduled in Lahore.

“The early onset of hazardous pollution and subsequent poor air quality meant that the risk to keep matches in Lahore at this stage was too great. An early decision was made to ensure logistical challenges could be dealt with sooner rather than later. We cannot and will not compromise on the health and wellbeing of the players or officials.

“The decision to move matches from Lahore was not one that was taken lightly. For the sake of everyone involved and to ensure the remaining four matches of the HBL PSL and the three T20Is against Zimbabwe were completed without risk or interruption, it was important to move the matches.

“I am grateful to Zimbabwe Cricket, the franchise owners, broadcast partners and our valued commercial partners for their understanding in supporting our decision.

“We also want to thank the federal and provincial governments, as well as law enforcing agencies for their understanding and continued support.”

Meanwhile, the High Performance department has decided that players featuring in the first-class Quaid-e-Azam Trophy will be released following the third round match to spend the break at their homes. Before returning to Karachi for the fourth round action, which begins on 20 November, the players will undergo Covid-19 tests at home and then another test upon arrival. Players with two negative tests will be allowed to integrate with their respective sides.

Director – High Performance, Nadeem Khan: “We are mindful and careful of players’ mental health during the Covid-19 times and, as such, this is a good opportunity for them to return to their homes when the event takes an 11-day break, spend quality time with their family and friends, and rejoin on 18 November to complete the tournament.

“These are difficult times for everyone, but the players are showing tremendous courage and bearing with these tough restrictions. As stated previously, we are keeping a watching brief on the Covid-19 cases and if we believe we can make some relaxations without comprising on the integrity of the competition and health of the players, then we will ease some restrictions.”

Revised schedule:

The Saudi Arabian-born cricketer named in Zimbabwe’s squad for the upcoming tour of Pakistan will “surprise people” with his versatile talents, reckons former national team captain and chief selector Tatenda Taibu.

All-rounder Faraz Akram was included in the African side’s 20-man touring party scheduled to play three ODIs and three Twenty20 internationals beginning on October 30 in Lahore and Multan.

A 27-year-old left-handed batsman and right-arm medium-pace bowler, Akram has long been highly regarded by Taibu.

In 2018, Taibu included Akram in a squad on a learning tour of England under the auspices of the former Zimbabwe captain’s short-lived Rising Stars Academy project.

“He is a very talented bowler and batsman,” remarked Taibu.

“He can swing, I don’t think there is anyone in the country that can swing the ball as much as he does, swinging it back in.”

Taibu, though, said he was concerned that Zimbabwe’s technical staff might not fully appreciate what the player has to offer.

“I don’t think they (Zimbabwe) will know how to use him,” said Taibu.

“Even when he was playing for Mash (Zimbabwean first-class team Mashonaland Eagles), they didn’t know how to use him. He was bowling first-change or second-change. But he is a complete new-ball bowler, he will properly surprise people and, you know, he is someone who shouldn’t be bowling long spells. This is just my opinion, but (he is) a proper new-ball bowler.”

Chiefly a pace bowler, Akram has also been backed to shine with the bat by Taibu, given an opportunity up the order.

“Batting-wise, he is way better than he looks. He doesn’t look pretty, but the boy, if given a license to hit a cricket ball, he can hit a cricket ball. What I saw and what he has been used for is two different things.”

Akram, who has family roots in Pakistan, was raised in Zimbabwean capital Harare.

Zimbabwe star all-rounder Sikandar Raza, born in Punjab, is the other player of Pakistani origin in the Southern African team.

Zimbabwe head coach to miss Pakistan tour

Zimbabwe head coach Lalchand Rajput will miss the Pakistan tour after the Indian Embassy blocked him from travelling to Islamabad due to frosty relations between India and Pakistan.

The Embassy of India in Harare wrote to Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) asking that Rajput, who is an Indian national, be exempted from visiting Pakistan for the limited-overs tour in accordance with the travel guidelines stipulated by the Government of India for its citizens.

The Embassy of Pakistan in Harare had issued a visa to Rajput.

“With Rajput unavailable for the tour, ZC has appointed Zimbabwe bowling coach Douglas Hondo to take charge of the team for the three one-day international matches and as many Twenty20 international games against Pakistan,” ZC said in a statement.

Squad: Chamu Chibhabha (captain), Faraz Akram, Ryan Burl, Brian Chari, Tendai Chatara, Elton Chigumbura, Tendai Chisoro, Craig Ervine, Tinashe Kamunhukamwe, Wesley Madhevere, Wellington Masakadza, Carl Mumba, Richmond Mutumbami, Blessing Muzarabani, Richard Ngarava, Sikandar Raza, Milton Shumba, Brendan Taylor, Donald Tiripano, Sean Williams.

RAWALPINDI: Zim*ba*bwe Cricket chairman Tavengwa Mukuhlani has urged the international cricket bodies to appreciate Pakistan’s efforts for restoring international cricket.

“The world must understand that Pakistan has done everything possible within its capacity to make sure that international cricket comes back to the country,” Mukulani said at a news conference along with Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Ehsan Mani at the Pindi Cricket Stadium.

He said that the Zimbabwe squad was happy to be in Pakistan. “We feel at home, we are very comfortable and well looked after here,” he said, “The bio-secure bubble has been maintained very well.”

Recalling Zimbabwe-Pakistan relations, he said that both countries had very special relationship not only in the field of cricket but on government level as well.

“We share a long history not only cricket but other areas [as well],” he said, noting the isolation faced by Zimbabwe in the past.

“We are here to show solidarity with Pakistan and for international cricket as we have also gone through a phase of isolation,” he said.

To a query regarding Zimbabwe’s Indian coach Lalchand Rajput, who did not visit Pakistan for ongoing ODI and then T20 International series, Mukuh*lani said that Pakistan Embassy in Zimbabwe had issued visa for coach, but on the request of the Indian Government, Rajput opted not to visit Pakistan.

Mani appreciated Zim*babwe for their tour, while appreciating the performance of the visitors in the first ODI which was won by Pakistan on Friday.

“They have huge potential,” Mani said, adding that Pakistan will tour Zimbabwe next year while there are also plans underway for sending the Under-19 and women teams to Zimbabwe.

The PCB chief added that England will possibly send a second-string side to the country for their tour in January next year with the first team to be visiting Sri Lanka at the same time.

Mani also revealed that a security delegation from Cricket South Africa will be arriving in Pakistan on Monday to check the measures for Proteas’ upcoming tour to the country. The dates and venues for the tour will be finalised after the delgation’s visit.

Zimbabwe cricket captain Chamu Chibhabha has echoed his disappointment at the team's One-Day International (ODI) series loss in the just-ended tour of Pakistan while appreciating the vast positives drawn from the trip to the subcontinent.

Pakistan won the ODI series 2-1 and won the T20i series by a 3-0 whitewash.

The tour was Zimbabwe's first piece of cricket action since March after several engagements were called off due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

But Chibhabha refused to use that as an excuse.

"We should have won the ODI series. We played the better cricket for most parts, but Pakistan played the bigger moments better. We had big performances from our young and experienced players and for a team in transition, that's what you want," Chibhabha said in an interview with Standardsport.
