Zulqarnain appeared and disappeared faster than a flash back in 2010 when he was picked to play in England after Kamran Akmal was dropped (pun intended). He made 88 at Birmingham and was subsequently also selected for an LOI series vs SA in UAE. However, his career turned upside down and has seemed in a perennial paralysis after a bizarre controversy during the SA series, where Zulqarnain claimed to have been beaten up by a mafia and fled to England to seek asylum.

Since then, ZH has returned to Pakistan and played in the 2015 domestic season, so does he have a chance of making it back to the Pakistan national fold ?

Is it bad that Pakistan cricket is so insane the story in the OP didnt even make me raise an eyebrow?? :))

He looked like a pathetic player anyway, don't really need him and he was just merely a backup choice.

Has he been playing in the 2016 season or does he intend to? what have his recent performances been like

Yea he made 88 in Birmingham, but Sarfraz made a 100 at Lord's and 90 at Cardiff.

would be good to see him along with aamir in the team at some point. a moment like that will finally give the fans the closure they need from 2010 and let the world celebrate the new era of pakistani cricket.

The guy created huge drama, embarrassed Pakistan on the international scene by accusing his team mates of match fixing and ran away to the UK in the middle of a match only to later discover that he created the drama to apply for assylum.

The PCB had intentions to fine him big time and give him a lengthy ban for his antics but he created a sob story of suffering from financial strife and that his father was suffering from illness due to which the PCB let him off the hook.

Then he created a fake video where he beat himself up, had self inflicted injuries and proceeded to accuse fellow players of injuring him. Even his brother on record has said that he is not a mentally sound person.

it gets better (ie worse)

Zulqarnain aka Zoni, came back to Pakistan and posted a twitter video off the aftermath of him getting bashed. He defeintly had cuts and brusises and he announced to the media that 'akmal mafia' had attacked him.

Police did an investigation and it turned out he got smashed up by his own brother in family dispute.

we throw the word crazy around a lot, but this guy actually needed help

I say it with sympathy and genuine gooswill but this was a guy who needed help

hearing the names here actually makes you appreciate how much of a difference sarfraz has made despite his flaws.

Post Kami, we have had Umar, Mohmmad Salman, Shakeel Ansar, Zoni, and Adnan

Only Adnan came out of that list with any real credit

Looked like such a natural international cricketer.

Good with the gloves and a competent batsman.

Such a shame as to where his career drifted to.

I liked him , i dont know why he did all that.

He has no chance of making a comeback though , sarfraz overall is a better package though zulqarnain was a better keeper.

Would have been a handy test keeper.

Better then all the akmals.

As for a comeback.

He's probably behind the likes of Rehan afridi- Saifullah Bangush- Mohammed Hasan.

why exactly do you want him back?

is their a reason for this thread / question?

Sarfraz is 10x the player he is, Rizwan is the backup. Their is no need for a mediocre 30 year old WK who can't bat

Based on a very limited sample. Sarfraz is 10 times the player Haider was, whether it be under pressure or not.

Had two gutsy batting performances in a short duration. How do you Sarfraz is 10 times better when sample size is too low?

Also, scored an 88 in much tougher conditions.

Zulqarnain Haider hopeful of Pakistan comeback despite switching to tennis-ball cricket

New Delhi: It is now a part of folklore as to how Mahendra Singh Dhoni was a 'tennis ball king' much before he ruled Indian cricket.

He was one of the best paid batsmen in tennis ball tournaments in Bengal, which used to be a source of decent pocket money for budding cricketers. But there are cases where cycle of life goes in reverse gear.

That's what has happened with former Pakistan Test wicketkeeper Zulqarnain Haider, who had suddenly walked away from the national team and sought asylum in the United Kingdom.

The 30-year-old Zulqarnain has now picked up pieces and plays private T20 tournaments in the United States and is trying his luck in tennis ball tournaments, although he has not ruled out the possibility of an international comeback.

Recently, Zulqarnain came for the 10 Premier League, which offers highest prize money (250,000 Dirhams) for a tennis ball tournament.

"Tennis ball cricket can also be a career option. One of my friends was a part of the organising committee. So I came here for a few matches. You never know but hope this also gives players a scope of growth. The matches are completed in short span of time and is lucrative also," Zulqarnain, who last played First-Class cricket in 2014 for Zarai Taraiqiati Bank Limited (ZTBL), told PTI.

His last List A appearance was even prior to that.

Since cricket was his bread and butter, the keeper-batsman describes his method of running his finances by saying: "The bank job has helped me. When I came back to Pakistan from my asylum in the UK, the then interior minister Rehman Malik had helped me a lot. So I have this job.

"Also I went to the United States and played a few tournaments in Chicago, California and Washington. Two were T20 tournaments. So I am earning some money apart from the salary."

He does not want to talk about past but at the same time does not have any regrets.

"I have always maintained that I had specific issues with a few players whom I won't like to name. And I was right, wasn't I ? Now the atmosphere in the Pakistan team is great. I have no problems with any of the current cricketers who are representing Pakistan.

"In fact, most of them I consider as friends. Those with whom I had problems, they are no longer playing for the national team," said the 30-year-old glovesman, who had played one Test, four ODIs and three T20 Internationals for the national team.

For all practical reasons, Zulqarnain in immediate future is unlikely to make it to the national team but he is hoping against hope that he gets some good performances at the first-class level and stakes a claim.

A total of 28 runs from four innings in qualifying round of Quaid-e-Azam trophy meant that he did not get to play for ZTBL this season.

But the man who scored a fighting 88 at Headingley in his only Test appearance is confident for a second shot at redemption.

"I can still come back to the national side as a second wicketkeeper batsman. I know Sarfraz is doing a good job both with the bat and the gloves but I can be the second choice still. I am good enough for that. I will take it as a new beginning. Even during my first stint with the national side, I was understudy to Kamran Akmal," concluded Zulqarnain.

With Kamran Akmal making too many runs in domestic and Rizwan as a second choice, Zulqarnain chances are next to impossible to make a comeback.

I still remember his 88 run innings against England in the 2nd Test in Birmingham. I wish him a speedy recovery

I have no sympathy for this guy. This guy got a severe peritonitis a few years back and got medical aid from pcb and then he was spitting venom on PCT a year or two ago during wt20/wc speaking against pakistan team on indian tv. Now he's sick again and asking for money from pcb.
