Kohli by a country mile.

The greatest batsman across formats and the greatest Test captain of the decade.

Anyone suggesting an alternate name cannot be taken seriously.

I watched Australia tour South Aftica two years ago, and AB De Villiers was so far ahead of Steve Smith that it wasn’t funny.

So my vote is for AB.

I will go with Kohli.

Top 5 I agree with Wisden although would add Stokes in there.

So, it's Kohli, Smith, Steyn, AB and Stokes.

Anderson is not in top 5.

Kohli. Not even a single doubt.

He has redefined batting, no one imagined a batsman could be equally successful in all three formats.

Once in a millennium player

Smith is mainly a test great

Smith and kohli cant separate these two.
I have re -assessed by opinion, as kohli and smith have really only dominated in the second half of this decade.
Based on individual achievements throughout the WHOLE decade, then i will have to say - James Anderson.

Who is your best bowler of the decade?

Obviously the one and only, Kohli.

Even the likes of SRT didn't have this much impact on the game.

Bowler has to be Steyn. We shouldn't judge him on his last one or two years.

Most likely Kohli.

One can make a case for Smith as well owing to his dominance in Test cricket along with some solid performances in WC games, where Kohli has been lackluster.

Among the bowlers, Dale Steyn stands out.

Who is your best bowler of the decade?

Can’t really say. There is no bowler who has been consistently great across formats. Cummins didn’t play for many years and the likes of Bumrah have emerged only in the last 3 years.

Steyn was pretty much finished around 2015 and Anderson has not played Limited Overs in the last 5 years.

Starc is easily the ODI bowler of the decade but there are several better bowlers in Test cricket.

Boult has probably the best claim across all formats. He has played all three formats consistently and has been one of the best bowlers. However, he hasn’t been the absolute best in any format so that does count against him.

Maybe someone like Rabada as well, but since he made his debut in 2015, one can argue that he hasn’t played enough.

Tendulkar in 90s >> Kohli in 2010s

Watched them both as an Indian on TV and in grounds. Verdict is quite heavily in Tendulkar's favour for most Indians like me.

In conclusion, you can't decide who is the best bowler of the decacde.

In this decade, AB de Villiers has been better Than Kohli in both ODI's and Tests.

Which is how it is.

Just like in 2000s, there wasn't a single stand out batsman. Ponting probably had the strongest case but statistically Kallis and Sangakkara were up there besides Ponting declined dramatically post 2007-08 India tour..

Same happened with bowlers in 2010s

In This Decade Most International Runs Against

England - S Smith
India - A Cook
SL - Virat Kohli

Most overseas runs in this decade

V KOHLI - 9246, avg 53.13(34 tons)

It's sometimes hard to decide between 2/3 players maximum. Not the number of names he mentioned just to point out how every format is important. Surprised he didn't mentionned Malinga and his IPL exploits for bowler of the decade.

For example, no one in his right mind will mention Boult for bowler of the decade. That's just not serious.

Total runs isn't the best measurement. The players do not play the same amount of games.

Decade-wise prolific wicket-takers in ODIs:

1970s - Chris Old (41)
1980s - Kapil Dev (168)
1990s - Wasim Akram (279)
2000s - Muttiah Muralitharan (335)
2010s - Lasith Malinga (248)

Most ODI wickets in this decade:

248 - Lasith Malinga (ave 28.74)
177 - Shakib Al Hasan (30.15)
173 - Imran Tahir (24.83)
172 - Mitchell Starc (20.99)

Cricket players, commentators and experts had no trouble in overwhelmingly picking Ponting as the standout player of the decade.

Ricky Ponting has been voted Player of the Decade by an overwhelming majority by a jury comprising former and current players and cricket writers.

The best batsman of this decade is very obvious here with avg of 57 across formats with nearly 70 international tons. His most competetiors have less than half international tons in this decade with lower average. Gap is too wide.

Kohli.jpg

In bowlers, I will go with Steyn because he was too dominant in the test format despite in not playing entire decade and no bowler was anywherer close to him during his playing days. He was pretty good in ODI format as well.

okay, here you go

Decade-wise prolific run-getters in ODIs:

1970s - Greg Chappell (919 runs)
1980s - Desmond Haynes (5892)
1990s - Sachin Tendulkar (8571)
2000s - Ricky Ponting (9103)
2010s - Virat Kohli (11125)

Mohammed Hafeez 4th?
Wow, take that haters, i have always been a hafeez fan!
Hafeez officially in the fab four
Hafeez could have been second if he was selected in the last few tours.
End of the next decade, babar will top the fab four, inshaAllah!

Has to be Smith, dominated Test cricket and actually helped his team win titles in limited overs.

Player of the Decade - King Kohli
Captain of the Decade - MS. Dhoni

Kohli
ABD
Smith

Are the top 3. If you rate test and world cup as the highest form of cricket and give majority of weight age to these two things then Smith will be at top.

Otherwise Kohli will be rank 1.

Personal choice but overall I think this decade belonged to Kohli who is slightly ahead of Smith and ABD.

Hafeez is good player, many posters in this forum underestimating.

I am due to release my awards for the decade, so will not give much away but across all formats it does become a bit difficult. Smith probably loses some points as he isn't as good in ODIs and T20s as Kohli, Williamson or Root. In terms of bowlers, there have been very few truly elite cross format bowlers. Anderson and Broad were great in tests but merely good in ODIs, Steyn fared better but he was never short format powerhouse ala Younis, Akram and co. Ajmal and Shakib are probably the best on the bowling front based on impact in all formats but Ajmal's career ended much earlier in the decade, so a lack of games may come into play.

The allrounders become a bit murkier still, Shakib again, possibly Stokes...how about Kallis? Lots to think about.

Cook is a beast!
I have changed my mind again, i am going for Alistair Cook and James Anderson.

For example, no one in his right mind will mention Boult for bowler of the decade. That's just not serious.

Boult is terrific.

To not give him credit for his brilliant all format record is disrespectful. He's definitely one of the best but just not a big moment player.

England, Australia and India are the outstanding teams this decade (plus early South Africa) on the back of performances from their key players. India leads the rest. I would choose Kohli, who despite his away woes as batsman/captain in some key test playing nations and lack of runs in key ICC matches, has an outstanding record in all formats. What's more, he takes the fight to the opposition - which very few, in fact no captains in test matches today do.
Screen Shot 2019-12-28 at 5.15.59 PM.jpg

Has to be Kohli if are are considering performances and impact on the games across the formats. Yes his ICC tournument performances haven’t exactly been extraordinary but his overall performances have been exceptional enough to overcome any shortcoming here.

Kohli would be player of the decade. You can argue the semantics but it wont change reality.

Kohli by far as a batsman, bowling probably anderson for his longevity even though he's majority of time has played just the long format

There are a few players in front of Anderson including Styen, Rabada, Starc, Ashwin and Malinga.

Steve Smith.

In terrible decade of batting he took art of batsmenship to a new level. He is the player of the decade.

No single bowler stood out but Cummins was the best. Had he played majority of decade he would be in contention.

I'm sure rabadas not been playing for a whole decade, Steyn I rate one of the top 5 ever , but forvthe second part of this decade he was done with injuries, ashwain mainly only good in India , so is malinga, starc is quality but I'm certain he was the main beneficiary from the 3 muskacheeters, Warner, Smith, barncroft

Steyn benefited from ball tampering (remember the zippergate) so he is out, Anderson benefited from special mints so basically you have excluded all the bowlers.

Steve Smith and Ben Stokes for me for winning some outstanding matches for their teams including world cup semifinals/finals.

3rd would be Kohli and the reason I won't even think of having him at 1st is because he hasn't won big matches for India where as Smith and Stokes have done that multiple times. Because of umpiring fiasco, world cup final is being remembered for different reasons but Stokes innings in final match of WC was perhaps the greatest world cup final inning ever played in the history of the game. And then more recently his test match inning against Australia. Smith scored some 700 runs to win the ashes. All these performances make history, unfortunately Kohli is yet to play some historical inning.

We get it, you don't like Steyn and Anderson.

Don't forget that your own team has also been tampering. Your bowlers have done quite bad in Asia as well, while Steyn and Anderson have succeeded in Asia.

Steyn has done so well for far too long.

Kohli by a country mile.

The greatest batsman across formats and the greatest Test captain of the decade.

Anyone suggesting an alternate name cannot be taken seriously.

You can’t be taken seriously “greatest test captain of the decade”. Mate for him to have that status he would have had to win in even one of England or South Africa but he got demolished in both those countries so that’s not even up for debate he’s nowhere in being the greatest test captain of the decade.

Highest number of overseas wins in this decade as a captain. Only sub-continental captain to win a series in Australia.

Mate, come back to this thread when you find another Asian captain who has won a test series in Australia. Ever.

Is the title of the this thread Player of the Decade who is Asian?

Btw he hasn’t even been the captain for a decade I think barely half of the decade. Winning against and depleted Australian isn’t a big feat. Not denying him being the best player of the decade their is no completion but calling him the test captain of the decade is nothing but a poor joke. Come back when he wins the test championship or even wins in England or South Africa.

In this decade, AB de Villiers has been better Than Kohli in both ODI's and Tests.

Maybe in your fantasy world.

In the real world, Kohli has been comfortably better in both Tests and ODIs.

In conclusion, you can't decide who is the best bowler of the decacde.

I am sorry if you were looking for a one line answer and I disappointed you with a detailed post. I wanted to exhibit why it is very difficult to pick one bowler as the best of this decade.

For example, no one in his right mind will mention Boult for bowler of the decade. That's just not serious.

Depends on how you look at it. Boult is the only bowler in this decade who is among the top 7 in terms of leading wicket-takers in both Tests and ODIs, even though he has played far less matches than quite a few bowlers.

In addition, he was also the joint leading-wicket taker in the 2015 World Cup.

He has a stronger claim than you think. It is not that easy to choose between Boult and Starc (who is in the top 10 in both Tests and ODIs). Perhaps Starc has a stronger claim because he was much better than Boult in the 2019 World Cup.

Winning in England and South Africa is not the gold standard in this decade. Winning in India is.

England have not been able to whitewash any team since 2015 and have drawn multiple series against mediocre sides like Pakistan. South Africa have lost Test series to Australia, England and an out of sorts Sri Lanka.

Since losing to England in 2012, India have been ruthless at home. Winning a Test match is a miracle in India, let alone winning a Test series. No team is even close to India when it comes to home dominance.

To be the best in this decade, you have to conquer India in India, and India have become the gold standard because of the captaincy of Kohli. He has turned India into a ruthless winning machine that are impossible to beat at home. Apart from Lloyd’s West Indies and S. Waugh/Ponting’s Australia, no Test side in history has won matches at the rate at which Kohli’s India does.

If you don’t think that Kohli is the greatest Test captain of this decade, please list the names of the captains who have a stronger claim.

I'm sorry but can't agree about Anderson, the guy is a model professional, unlike Smith or cry baby Warner, openly cheated in day light, what were the Muppets thinking

The player of the decade along with James Anderson.
Oh by the way, england beat india in india this decade but india has not beaten england in england this decade!

Yep, forgot about cook the guy is a legend, true this decade England have owned india

Player of the decade has to be Kohli. This guy performed well in all formats.

Smith is clear second.

Actually I forgot about cook, cook/kohli batting, Anderson bowling for his longevity, 150 tests for a fast bowler is unreal and he still in fantastic condition

Test cricket is the pinnacle of the sport(although incredibly boring).
White ball cricket is of a much lower standard(but alot more entertaining).
Therefore the player of the decade has to be split between sir Alistair Cook(batting) and James Anderson
(bowling).
No one comes close to these two.
